We are joined with actor, director, producer & teacher & writer Marishka S. Phillips to have an awesome conversation on the craft of acting!Marishka S. Phillips was born into the entertainment business. Her mother, Sandra Reaves-Phillips is an award-winning actress, in addition to being a writer and a singer. Marishka grew up immersed in theater, film and television, so it was not surprising that she would follow in her mother's footsteps. Ms. Phillips had been honing her skills as a dancer, taking classes at Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Broadway Dance Center, and had begun performing at a very early age. She got her first major theatrical break at age 13 when she was cast for the European tour of RAISIN. This opportunity offered her a chance to explore the world and served as an important confidence builder. Her career path has been anything but traditional, though it started off that way. She landed on Broadway, cast as part of the ensemble, on the musical UPTOWN: IT'S HOT starring Maurice Hines, in which she also understudied for the female lead. She continued amassing credits on Brodway with roles in BUBBLIN' BROWN SUGAR, FAME: THE MUSICAL, THE WIZ and THE ME NOBODY KNOWS. On television, she had re-occurring roles in the last two seasons of THE COSBY SHOW spin-off – A DIFFERENT WORLD. When she was not traveling the world with a musical or as a backup singer with recording artists like Sean “P Diddy” Combs and Cece Winans, she was developing and fortifying other aspects of her talents. She never considered herself a one trick pony. Like her mother before her, she began writing and eventually set her eye on directing, but not before fate would bring her together with the multi-faceted Susan Batson, who among her many other talents, was a world-renown acting coach who worked with some of Hollywood's A-list celebrities. Though she did not abandon any of her other career goals, Ms. Batson did open up new possibilities which she embraced with the same passion that she has every chapter of her life's journey. Today, in addition to being known as a working actor, Marishka is also a writer and director whose credits continue to grow. Her short film, Melinda: The Movie starring Tony Award-winning performers, LaChanze and Lillias White won numerous awards on the short film circuit. Ms. Phillips directed the one woman play, DOWN TO EARTHA, written and starringDierdra McDowell, which was a tribute to the invincible entertainer/civil rights and social justice activist, Eartha Kitt.Coaching other actors has become a central part of Ms. Phillips career development. She has been an instrumental force in helping actors such as Kerry Washington (Scandal), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth) and Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill) achieve some of their best performances, and has received credit for doing that, as a result, she has become a much in demand acting coach. (visit her on YouTube) The Marishka Method. She currently coaches Nafessa Williams (I Wanna Dance With Somebody), Taja V. Simpson (The Oval) Shaquita Smith (Wicked City) and many more. Born in Sydney in 1937, Kevin Jacobsen began his working life in a chartered accountant's practice. An adept piano player, he devoted all his spare moments to music. In 1957, he and his brother Colin, joined with John Bogle, Lawrie Erwin and Dave Bridge to form the KJ Quintet. After some success changed their name to Col Joye and the Joy Boys, adding younger brother Keith. Almost immediately they scored a booking on Bill McColl's Jazzarama concert in October 1957. After this came an engagement to play at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney as a curtain raiser for the film The Tommy Steele Story, an appearance on TV's Bandstand and a recording contract. While Col Joye went on to become a ‘teen idol' and an enduring pop legend, Kevin left the band and began managing artists and promoting concerts. He and Col set up Col Joye enterprises and their own publishing company. In 1965, with Col and Tony Brady, Jacobsen founded ATA Allstar Artists, which encompassed a record label, a recording studio, event promotion and production, and artist representation. Initially Jacobsen presented local acts – including, of course, Col Joye and the Joy Boys – but before long he began importing overseas attractions. It was to mark this change of direction, that ‘Kevin Jacobsen Productions' was created. He claims that in the 1970s and 1980s he toured more artists than any other Australian promoter. Eventually he started producing theatrical shows and arena spectaculars, frequently working in partnership with other promoters. Among his early successes was a tour by the affable Irish comedian Dave Allen; one of his disasters was The Evil Knievel Thrill Spectacular, whose infamous American daredevil star failed to deliver either thrills or spectacle. In 1987 Jacobsen presented Michael Jackson's first Australian tour. In 1988 he was commissioned by the Queensland Government to mastermind ‘Queensland Day' celebrations in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and by the Federal Government to produce the Royal Bicentennial Concert in the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales. In 1989 he presented the sell-out concert event Legends of Rock. In 1995 he was the first promoter outside the USA to be invited by the Disney organization to present the stage version of Beauty and the Beast. Its run of two years in Melbourne and 15 months in Sydney grossed $58 million. Also that year he produced the television series Gladiators for the Seven Network. The gross takings for his 1997 presentation of The Three Tenors at the Melbourne Cricket Ground were the largest in Australian history for a single concert – $15 million. In 1999 he presented The Bee Gees – One Night Only, the first live performance at Stadium Australia – the Olympic Stadium. In 2000 Barbra Streisand's four stadium concerts in Sydney and Melbourne achieved the highest grosses anywhere in the world for this artist, more than $23 million. The year 2001 brought Shout! – The Legend of the Wild One, an all-Australian production based on the life of Jacobsen's old friend, Johnny O'Keefe. It toured Australia to record crowds, winning Mo and Green Room Awards and an ARIA for Best Cast Album. In 2002 Jacobsen presented a sell-out Elton John concert tour, plus Fame – The Musical, which toured throughout Asia, and two sensationally successful arena shows: the classic Australian rock anthology Long Way to the Top and the brilliantly innovative The Man from Snowy River Arena Spectacular. Other Jacobsen theatrical ventures have included Oscar Wilde's Diversions and Delights, Girls' Night Out, A Chorus Line, Camelot (with Richard Harris), Lend Me a Tenor, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Walt Disney's World on Ice and Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet, as well as massive open-air productions of Aida and Turandot. Among the many artists who have toured under the Jacobsen banner are Slim Whitman, KISS, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Marley, Shania Twain, Billy Joel, John Denver, Pearl Jam, Cyndi Lauper, Julio Iglesias, Ba

She’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. Darlene Love has lent her voice to countless hit singles over the years, including “He’s a Rebel” by the Crystals, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” by the Righteous Brothers, and her own holiday classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”.She’s also had the opportunity to sing with many legends of music including Elvis,Sam Cooke, Aretha, Marvin Gaye, Cher, and even Cheech & Chong! Many others will remember her as Danny Glover’s wife in the Lethal Weapon movies. Darlene is currently gearing up for a run of “Fame the Musical” in Australia, where she stars as Miss Sherman, a no-nonsense teacher at the school for the arts. We’ll also discuss the new DVD release of “The T.A.M.I. Show”, which Darlene was a part of.You can find out more about Darlene, by going to her official site, www.darleneloveworld.comSinger Darlene Love has lent her voice to literally hundreds of recordings over the years. We’ve assembled a list of some of her “Greatest Hits”“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” – Darlene Love – One of Darlene’s greatest moments. A stone-cold holiday classic from Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift to You. You can close your eyes and feel the snow falling on you.“He’s a Rebel” – credited to the Crystals, but it’s actually Darlene on lead vocals. Her first #1 hit.“Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah – Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans – Darlene sings on this Disney classic turned inside-out. Extra points for Billy Strange’s guitar solo that sounds like it’s coming from another planet.“(Today I Met) The Boy I’m Gonna Marry” – Darlene Love – One of the few Spector tracks to actually sport Miss D’s name. Darlene reaches back to her days in the gospel choir for a gutty performance. Imagine her preaching to the congregation about her good news.“The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss)” – Betty Everett – Darlene and the Blossoms do the question-asking, like “Is it in his eyes”? sharing the lead vocalis with Betty. The vocal ascending that they do when Betty sings “Kiss him / and squeeze him tight” will send shivers.“Poor Side of Town” – Johnny Rivers – Darlene & the Blossoms show off their gentler side as they echo Johnny’s verses with sweet sophistication.“The Right Time” – Bobby Darin – Darlene duets with Bobby on this under-appreciated cut from a lost Darin LP called Bobby Darin Sings Ray Charles“Brown-Eyed Woman” – Bill Medley – The deep-voiced half of the Righteous Brothers testifies his love for Darlene, while she and her sisters turn up the heat.“Basketball Jones – Cheech and Chong – Showing that she truly is one of the most versatile of vocalists, Darlene lends her talents to C&C’s parody of the Brighter Side of Darkness “Love Jones.”
