Today's Promise: Galatians 5:1 Jesus set you free. It's as simple as that. You are no longer a slave to your sin, selfishness, fear, or past failures. As a free person in Jesus Christ, never allow anyone to put you back under the law of bondage. Unfortunately, even though we live in a free country, many people still live in bondage to their hearts. They live as slaves to their fears, failures, and desires. However, Christ freed you to live in a loving relationship with Jesus.

What keeps us from stepping into the life God has already set before us? In Numbers 13, Israel stood on the edge of promise, but their reluctance and distorted vision held them back. We face the same choice today—cling to the familiarity of the past or trust God with a new future. Join us this Sunday as we explore how to break patterns of hesitation and step into the freedom and fullness Jesus offers.

Fruit is developed from a seed in the ground. The seed is buried and then is transformed into a plant. Once the plant grows to maturity fruit is the natural byproduct. Fruit is never grown overnight. In the same way the fruit of our lives is not developed overnight. It is planted then cultivated and grown over a period of time. All of us develop fruit from the choices we make in life. The question is what kind of fruit are you producing? If your life was like a piece of fruit and was peeled, would the fruit be sweet or sour?

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. — Galatians 5:1 CALL OUT: Today's callout goes to Jay Riggleman from Williamson, NY, and his group, which is using our study 7 Challenges Men Encounter on RightNow Media. Thank you so much. Do you see what Paul is doing here? Paul is persuading the Galatians that it's time to resist. This text is both a charge and a command. Paul wants believers to anchor themselves in a truth that can only be realized if they refuse to return. They must resist. If they don't, they will be drawn in and dragged down, yoked like slaves to their former ways. What an image! You see, the war a believer fights is fought in our hearts and minds for the soul. Each day, believers go to war empowered with the Holy Spirit—the very power of our risen Savior. As we go to war, we must remember we are not fighting for freedom. Freedom has been won by Jesus. We are also not fighting against people. We are fighting against the temptation within us to submit to any of our former ways. Our former ways are so devious and insidious that the temptation to return is strong. But we must resist. If we don't, it's like walking up to the yoke and willingly putting our neck back in it. That would be preposterous! Today resist. Resist the old temptations. Resist the old thoughts. Resist the old language. Resist the return. Plant your feet and spiritual identity firm in the freedom already won for you. That is good news! #FreedomInChrist #StandFirm #ResistTemptation #AnchoredInTruth #VictoryInJesus ASK THIS: How can you actively resist the temptation to return to your former ways and instead embrace the freedom that Christ has won for you? What practical steps can you take today to anchor yourself firmly in the truth of Christ and avoid being yoked again to the slavery of sin? DO THIS: Resist all your old yokes. PRAY THIS: Father, grant me the strength to resist the allure of past temptations and to stand firm in the freedom that Christ has secured for me. Often people in bondage live in a state of denial about their situation. Some of us look free, but we are not truly free. The story of Lazarus illustrates this idea. When Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave, Lazarus had to be loosed from burial wrappings. He was alive but still bound. Lazarus was bound because he had died. We are bound because of things in our lives. Pride, hate, jealousy, and bad choices tie us up and restrict us from freedom. In the old testament, God provided for the year of Jubilee, where all debts would be forgiven. It was a fresh start where every man could return to his possessions. Isaiah speaks of the acceptable year of the lord that ties back to the concept of jubilee when he proclaims that we can have life and have it more abundantly. Jesus quoted this scripture from Isiah when he spoke in the temple as a young boy. The difference is that Jesus removed any time constraints when He said those words. The liberty and freedom of jubilee are available to us every day.

Galatians 5:1: "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage." (NKJV). Galatians 5:1: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." (NIV). This key verse is transitional, moving the letter of Galatians into a description of Christian life of liberty through the Holy Spirit, moving the emphasis from justification to sanctification. He starts from the conclusion of the last chapter: "Christ has set us FREE", and declares that He has done this, so that we might live and enjoy a life of FREEDOM. Therefore, we should refuse to allow ourselves to return to a life of slavery by embracing legalism. First, we discuss what the Bible means by FREEDOM. It is not freedom to do whatever we want, or to sin as we please. We are not set free to sin, but we are set free from sin. Living under the flesh results in bondage. Freedom means being free to be and live as God created and intended us to be. We were made in God's image to belong to God and to be filled with God's Spirit, and to glorify God by expressing His nature and abilities. There are 2 main aspects to our freedom: (1) Freedom from the Law, and (2) Freedom from sin and self. (1) First, Christ set us free from the external restraint and condemnation of the Law, by bearing our sin and condemnation on the Cross, and then by giving us His imputed righteousness when we believe in Him. On this basis, He justified us and set our conscience free from the guilt of sin. There is therefor no condemnation in Christ (Romans 8:1). Thus, we have been set free from the tyranny of having to keep the Law to win acceptance and favour with God, and access to God and His grace. (2) Second, Christ sets us free from the power of indwelling sin (in our flesh) and our independent self-life, by the gift of His imparted righteousness through the indwelling Holy Spirit. That is, He sets our will free from bondage to sin (the sin-nature in our flesh) - this is sanctification by the Word and by the Spirit, for where the Spirit is there is liberty (2Corinthians 3:17). He initially sanctified our spirit (set it free from sin) in the New Birth, when the Spirit came to indwell it. Now He is progressively sanctifying our soul as we walk in the Spirit, rather than in the flesh. Our justification (freedom from the Law) is the basis for our sanctification, for it gives us legal access to the grace of God in the Spirit, which sanctifies us (Romans 5:1-2, 8:1-6). Thus, in order to enjoy a life of freedom in the Spirit, our hearts must first be established in our justification by grace through faith, which is why Paul first of all emphasised this truth in Galatians 1-4, before moving on to describe our new life in the Spirit (Galatians 5-6).

How blessed we are to have the freedom that God has given to this country. The freedom that many have given their lives for in the past and even today. As we celebrate this important event in our country, may our hearts be filled with thanksgiving. July 4 is a day of celebration for liberty...but the greatest liberty is to be free of the bondage of sin, and to know the grace and mercy of our faithful God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
