HAPPY 30th Episode!Well, if you count all of our bonus episodes, it's 38 episodes total. We started this little side project in October of 2021 to share the spirit of Deep Creek and Garrett County, MD and our love for this far western Maryland area that we call "home." We sat on living room couches and interviewed friends. We talked about local events, the four seasons, hunting, kids, farming, slowing down, and we even recorded ourselves indulging in microgreens!Along with all the fun and joy we experienced while making this podcast, there was also a lot of time, work and money required to make it happen. We both have other things we need to focus on - family, jobs, time with friends, other projects, maybe even other podcasts. So it's time to pause. For now, this is our last episode. We've so very much enjoyed bringing this project to Deep Creek and Garrett County, MD and beyond. THANK YOU for these past 2+ years. Thank you for saying hi to us when we were out and about. Thank you for sending in voice memos. Thank you for interviewing with us and sitting on those couches. Thank you for listening! And an extra special THANK YOU goes out to those who financially supported us through sponsorship: Appalachian Print StudioCashmere Clothing CoDeep Creek Lavender FarmGarrett County Celtic FestivalMeadow Mountain HempNarrows Hill - Ultimate Maps of Deep Creek Lake and Garrett CountyRailey Design Furniture and Home DecorSilver Tree MarineTraders Coffee HouseThe episodes will stay active for a short time, so we hope you'll continue enjoying them. It's that time of year again — time to get your hemp seeds in the ground. On this week's podcast, we check in with a handful of farmers (and one processor) to hear how things are going. What varieties are they planting, how much acreage, how's the weather? First we talk to Herb Grove, farmer and bison rancher in Center County, Pennsylvania, who said he's looking to put in about 45 acres of grain hemp this year but hasn't planted yet because of the lack of rain. “I don't think there's much hurry getting it in the ground. It ain't gonna do much till it gets some moisture. So we're going to play the rain game and hit it hard right before an estimated rain shower, I hope,” Grove said. Lack of rain is also an issue for Katherine Dubansky at Backbone Farm in Garrett County, Maryland, where she grows produce as well as hemp for CBD. “We decided to go on the real low side this year and grow 300 plants, which is the smallest number we've ever grown,” she said. She started her seeds in the greenhouse about 10 days ago and expects to get into the field in another 10 days or so. For Steve Groff in Lancaster County, the lack of precipitation is an issue, but it's not as bad as it could be, thanks to his cover crops and no-till farming practices. He direct-seeded 50 acres of fiber hemp the third week of May and has good emergence. He said he was concerned that there might not be enough moisture to germinate the seeds. “But I got to mention our regenerative agriculture methods, using cover crops and no-till, which is definitely in our favor. We're able to hold the moisture in that soil,” he said. For Aaron Templin, operating partner at Dakota Hurd Company in Fargo, North Dakota, things are looking good. He's working with three local farmers to grow about 100 acres of fiber to feed the processing facility. The hemp was planted in early May and weather-wise, they seem to be OK. In Sikeston, Missouri, Jeff Limbaugh is managing the hemp production for Midwest Natural Fiber. He said they've got about half of the anticipated 600 acres in the ground in the southeastern corner of the state, referred to regionally as the Boot Heel. He said they're still determining the best planting density, somewhere between 700,000 and million seeds per acre. “Our best method is drilling down on a seven and a half inch spacing,” Limbaugh said. We're back!Okay, we were back last week. BUT now we're back to what we originally planned for 2023: four new episodes, one for each of the four seasons. First up, SPRING!Spring in our mountains can be tough. We continue to experience winter weather and everything's just a little quiet - less visitors around, some things are closed and the weather makes it hard to be outside. But surprisingly, we rattled off ALL KINDS of spring things during this conversation! From "getting out of Garrett County" and escaping to nearby Frostburg and Thomas/Davis, to art and music events in Allegany County, MD and Tucker County, WV and numerous Deep Creek + Garrett County locals nights and restaurant shoutouts, there's a whole slew of tips and info for March, April and May in this episode.Bonus: Maureen tells us all about her newest business venture, Pocket Garden Blooms with flower subscriptions and events coming this summer! Check out her website here: https://pocketgardenblooms.comWe'll see you again in June with a summer episode...unless we decide to break our rule of only doing four new episodes again. :)For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Website: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comInstagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! When Maureen describes this episode she uses the word JOY. When Jessica describes this episode she uses SURPRISE.It was a joy to record and a joy to edit. It was a surprise that we talked for over an hour (or maybe that was no surprise, ha!) and that we only briefly touched upon the three topics that we thought would be the focus.Mike was born and raised in Garrett County. School and jobs took him to Pittsburgh, Washington DC and most recently New York City. COVID brought him back home and it's because of friends, family, work, and creative projects that he's able to easily choose to live and stay here. We were most impressed by Mike's outlook on life and the message of goodness in humanity that he shared. You can mostly find Mike at Railey Design Furniture & Home Decor near Deep Creek Lake where he works as a Pillow Expert and Designer: https://www.raileydesign.com/For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Website: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comInstagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! Time to introduce you to our friend, Kendall! She's a mama, she's got curly red hair, she loves Deep Creek + Garrett County like we do, AND she just started a new business! During our chat with Kendall, we hear why she and husband Mark did a 180 and moved from Baltimore to Garrett County, what it's been like growing her 15-year old graphic design business in the mountains and why they now own a dance studio! We get into the idea of “crafting a life” around what we've got here in Garrett County and of course there's some talk of juggling…because we're creative, professional, busy moms. Kendall Ludwig is the president and principal designer of CurlyRed where they believe in good design for everyone. Most recently, she's become the owner and creator of the Jitterbug Movement Studio. We haven't had an interview since June, so it's time for another one! It's also time to shine a light on a community resource and its leader, the Dove Center and Heather Hanline.Located in Oakland, MD the Dove Center provides safety, advocacy, and counseling to individuals whose lives have been shattered by domestic violence and/or sexual assault, and strives to expand public awareness of those issues.Heather is the director of the Dove Center and shared a ton of details on what she and her team do, which was far more than what we knew of their services. Domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse or neglect, are just some of the issues the Dove Center can help victims work through. The 24/7 help line, shelter space, counseling services, and transitional housing services at the Dove Center require a large team and large amount of supplies, and that means a lot of money. Their biggest fundraiser, The Festival of Trees, is an event that our entire community looks forward to. It's been since 2019 that the festival has fully happened, so there's some added excitement for its return this year. Of course we talk about its magic and how it sets the tone for the holiday season. If you're in or near Garrett County, MD and would like to support the Dove Center, visit their website and click "ways to give." If you or someone you know needs help and support, you can call the Dove Center 24/7 at 301-334-9000.Find monthly needs lists on the Dove Center Facebook page and find more info on Festival of Trees, including purchasing tickets for Breakfast with Santa, on the FOT website. For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas: Website: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comInstagram: @mtnmarylandmamasFacebook: www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! She's a mama to three kiddos and she loves this place as much as we do! Rachel is also very well practiced in adventuring so we knew she'd make a great third wheel for this summertime conversation...Throughout the conversation, we discuss our favorite Garrett County + Deep Creek summer events, our favorite regional "field trips" to go on during the warm season, our lake and mountain memories before we had kids, and of course we talk about food...the snacks we like to take to the Stage Wisp concert series and some quick meal ideas for when we're busy with the kids, which is most days.We also help to create a lovely mountains + lake vision for you all by sharing our ideal Garrett County + Deep Creek Lake summer day.In this Episode:Maureen's go-to chicken salad recipe:Eating Bird Food Almond Butter Chicken SaladIts Summer bloom season at the Deep Creek lavender farm!Check out Silver Tree Marine for all of your boat rental needs! For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas, check out our website and sign up for our newsletter: www.mountainmarylandmamas.comFollow us on Instagram @mtnmarylandmamasOr Facebook! www.facebook.com/mountainmarylandmamasAs always, thank you so much for being here to share in these conversations with us! On this week's hemp podcast, Lancaster Farming continues checking in with hemp producers around the country. Ray DePriest, from SunRay Hemp, tells us about growing hemp at 62 degrees north latitude in Palmer, Alaska — 60 miles north of Anchorage — where his family's been farming since the 1930s, first as potato farmers, then dairy. Now they focus primarily on hay. This is Ray's third year of growing hemp in Alaska. We hear from Theo Wahquahboshkuk, operations manager at Prairie Band Ag, a hemp company owned and operated by the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation in northeast Kansas, where the business is growing fiber, grain and flower. Closer to home, we talk with Caleb Kauffman of Lancashire Hemp Farms in Narvon, Pennsylvania. Kauffman prefers to plant his CBD crop later in July. Because Lancashire Farms focuses on “top-shelf smokable flower,” planting later in the season keeps the plants smaller and more manageable. Katharine Dubansky, co-owner of Back Bone Hemp, checks in from the mountains of Garrett County, Maryland, where she has planted triploid varieties of cannabinoid flower and a small test plot of a fiber variety. And finally, we hear from Ben Brimlow, lead agronomist at IND HEMP in Montana, where they contract with farmers across the Northwest to grow grain and fiber varieties of hemp. It's time for the final installment of our interview series with the founding female farmers of the Deep Creek Farmers Market! Our very own Maureen Sheaffer is one of five founding members of the Deep Creek Farmers Market that just started on May 27th, so we've put together a series of interviews to celebrate this new community project! All five founding members are leading ladies here in Garrett County, MD and four of them are local farmers and producers. We've talked with three of the farming ladies so far (we will eventually interview Maureen too!) and rounding out the series is Julie Friend of Wildom Farm in McHenry, MD...Julie's farming journey started in Chicago...in fashion, actually. From the sustainability scene to exploring her own nutritional wellness and then discovering that the two are linked when it comes to how our food is processed, Julie set out to make some big changes, both for herself and for others...and really, for the animals, too.At the start of the COVID pandemic, she moved to her parents' property here in Garrett County and officially started Wildom Farm, a regenerative farm that prioritizes animal welfare, ecology, and human health. She currently has 700 animals on the farm and will finish out 2022 having had an astounding 1800 animals! In a nutshell, Julie and her farming operations are impressive! You can find out more about Julie, Wildom Farm and the products they have available on their website: www.wildomfarm.com. She then landed in Tanzania doing work for the Peace Corps and met a nice, charming man from Garrett County, MD while there. (Enter Darryl!) Together, they moved to Washington DC, Haeli doing international development and program management for a USA supply chain in Nigeria and Darryl working as an urban farmer growing hydroponics. In 2019, after moving to our mountains of Maryland, Haeli and Darryl started farming hemp and Meadow Mountain Hemp was born. During this interview, we talk about the misconceptions and benefits of hemp, or CBD, how Haeli and Darryl use it to create their products, and how everyone should definitely stay away from gas station CBD. They also delight us with some homemade guitar tunes! You can find out more about Haeli, Darryl, their hemp efforts (they've got a micro green operation going, too!) and shop their products on their website: www.meadowmountainhemp.farm. It's BONUS episode time! And friends, this is a good one! It's a unique one! Very different from what we've been doing...When we set out on this podcasting journey in the Fall of 2021, we wanted to "show off" our home, Garrett County, MD...We wanted to highlight what makes our mountains and our lake and the people here so special! One of the things our area does so well is cultivate creative, hardworking folks who come together and make things happen. And those who put together the beloved Garrett County Celtic Festival are a wonderful example of that.Garrett County Celtic Festival9:30AM to 6:00PMFriendsville Community Park, Friendsville, MDCelebrating the Celtic culture, which runs thick through the ancestry of those who came to Appalachia before us. Our interview series with the founding female farmers of the Deep Creek Farmers Market continues! Our very own Maureen Sheaffer is one of five founding members of the Deep Creek Farmers Market that starts on May 27th, so we've put together a series of interviews to celebrate this new community project! All five founding members are leading ladies here in Garrett County, MD and four of them are local farmers and producers. Continuing through mid-June, we're talking with the four farmers (we will eventually interview Maureen too!) and next up is Allison Boyd of Honey Moon Farm in Accident, MD...Allison's story starts in Massachusetts where she studied political science, eventually went to law school and then received her AHA MOMENT when a college professor shared that the industry contributing most to climate change was agriculture. Allison has experience in advocacy work and agriculture policy, giving her a strong and passionate foundation for her farming goals. She wants to bring people into the fold of how their food is produced and she does it amazingly through her CSA program, farmers market involvement and the downright GOOD FOOD she grows on a 3-acre farm in our mountains of Maryland.During this interview, we talk about being a #fanofyourfarmer, how general food production is mostly invisible and we even get a little nerdy with some soil talk. If you're in or close to Garrett County, MD, consider becoming a future CSA member of Honey Moon Farm, shop their online store or gather their goods at the Cumberland or Deep Creek Farmers Markets. Here we go...the month of May! It's a big one for MMM! We're going places! Both in conversation and in location...Our very own Maureen Sheaffer is one of five founding members of the brand spankin' new Deep Creek Farmers Market that starts on May 27th, so we've put together a series of interviews to celebrate this new community project! All five founding members are leading ladies here in Garrett County, MD and four of them are local farmers and producers. So this month, we're talking with the four farmers (and will interview Maureen in June too!) and are kicking things off with our friend and fellow mama Alea McClintock-Donahue of Yorkie Acres Farm in Friendsville, MD...Alea has a very unique story and journey. She spent 16 years in the medical field, became a Nurse Practitioner, bought a farm at auction, bought a couple of goats, and is now a mama of two running a multi-faceted business out of she and husband Jason's farm. After working through post-partum depression and anxiety, she decided that being home and working the farm is where she needed to be. So she made a "big switch" from Nurse Practitioner to Friendsville Farmer...and from what we can see and from what Alea tells us, she's incredibly happy with her decision.Holistic health, making and selling farm products, and hosting a space for agritourism is all part of what they do at Yorkie Acres Farm. Oh, and let's not forget the goat snuggles! We visited the farm recently and got to snuggle some goats ourselves (you'll hear the goats in the episode)! Alea, Jason and their two kiddos find themselves snuggling goats on the daily and you can see it all in their social media...it's seriously the cutest! If you're in or close to Garrett County, consider visiting Yorkie Acres Farm for a farm tour...or attend one of their seasonal events! You can also stay overnight in their teal yurt and shop their Herbal Earth Apothacery products. You can find out more on their website: www.yorkieacresfarm.com. In this episode, we interview local educators and business owners, Katelyn and Suzan O'Brien, who are bringing something new and different to our area. This mom-daughter team recently opened Sylvan Learning of Garrett County in 2021 after years of teaching in the classroom and after conversations sparked during the early days of COVID. Their center can be described as "a supplemental resource to a child's education" where reading, math and writing are at the core. They also offer SAT prep, homework help, study skills, and have a whole lineup of summer camps ready for 2022.For us, these ladies got creative in COVID and made some big, difficult careers decisions that resulted in an incredible opportunity for our community. An opportunity for parents to make an added investment in their child's education and for kids to get the extra help they need in school.Katelyn and Suzan saw the opening of their learning center as a way to serve the community and become business owners at the same time, and that's MAGICAL...all four of us agree! If you're in or close to Garrett County, MD with a school-aged kiddo, you'll find this interview + episode incredibly informative. Katelyn and Suzan share all about the programs they're offering, what kind of summer camps will be available, and offer some insight into what becoming and being a Sylvan parent + student looks like. In a nutshell, there's A LOT going on at their center! For more information about Sylvan Learning of Garrett County, visit their website HERE! It's coming, we promise! Spring is such a varied time in the Deep Creek Lake area. It comes in fits and starts, and we usually have a week of decent 50 or 60 degree weather, followed by a snow storm, followed by a month of rain, AKA Mud Season. We're embracing all of it in this episode, and maybe whinging a just a tiny bit.As we chatted about foods to go along with March Madness, Maureen mentioned one of her favorite side salads, this Herbed Quinoa and Pomegranate dish from Cookie and Kate. *Advice to our listeners, this episode does include mention of rape and sexual assault, around minute 6:15, which may be triggering for some listeners. We were so honored to have the chance to interview Maryland Democratic Candidate for Governor, Laura Neuman. From Laura's Campaign Website:"Laura is running for governor because she believes every Marylander should have access to opportunity, regardless of where their story starts. Laura knows what it's like when someone else tries to write your story for you. People repeatedly questioned her assault, and refused to believe in her potential. She believes that if we invest in growing Maryland's economy, expand access to job training and education, and improve education, the possibilities are limitless."Our goal as the Mountain Maryland Mamas is to bring you stories from the Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake area, and we think its incredibly important to be dialed in to whats happening in the rest of our state as well. We're grateful to Laura's team for reaching out, and for the wonderful conversation with Laura! For more information about us, the Mountain Maryland Mamas, check out our website here, and sign up for our newsletter!Follow us on Instagram @mtnmarylandmamasOr Facebook! Living in the Tundra of Maryland definitely has its challenges, and one of the biggest is finding ways to combat those pesky winter blues. We're blessed with the Summer beauty of Deep Creek Lake, the majestic Fall foliage, and the Winter flakes that cover Mountain Maryland, but while we wait for the first signs of Spring, we have to face the March/April shoulder season, otherwise known as mud season. Throughout this weeks episode we chat about our own different strategies, and hopefully some tips you can integrate into your daily routine for those gloomy, cold, early Spring days while we all, collectively, wish for consistent Spring weather. There is absolutely something for the introverts and extroverts! Our tips:Get Outside and soak up the Vitamin DVitamin D is so important for your body, and the best way is to absorb it is through your skin, even if you just pop outside for 10 minutes a day. Some people may want to consider Vitamin D supplements, and you should always consult with a doctor and maybe have them check your Vitamin D levels.Move your body and explore any of our beautiful state parks. Some of the best native plant hunting for Garrett County is in early Spring, so go find some trillium, skunk cabbage, or jack in the pulpit! The Deep Creek Adventure Bureau is a great resource for getting outside, especially in those shoulder seasons!Change the sceneryTake a trip, use that PTO, and get out of town… preferably somewhere warm!Take a staycation! Use this time by catching up on those house projects that got pushed off last Summer. Get out of the house for a day trip - just change your scenery!Plan some time out with friendsGrab your girlfriend for some cocktailsVisit an event at the state parks, they're frequently updating their calendar of events. Outsource the planning to a community organization or adventure group - all you have to do is show up!Plan a trip and have something to look forward toGet it on the calendar. Do it. JournalingWriting out your thoughts is a great way to clear your head, and process any thoughts or feelings that have been building up and maybe you didn't realize. Embrace the Winter WeatherSnow? Go play!Self careFind a routine that works for you and lean into it. As they say, put on your own air bag first. Your kids are watching. Setting an example of taking care of yourself will show to your loved ones around you that you care for yourself. Take care of your mental health - whether thats nature therapy, talk therapy, or medication, TAKE CARE! No one else can do it for you. Sleep/rest. Thats it. Thats the tip. Farm VisitsWe both agree the best way to combating the Winter blues is to pet a baby goat. Or lamb. Or piggie. Many local farms offer farm tours, and it's such a great way to kick off the Spring season. Here are a few of our favorites:Yorkie Acres FarmWildom FarmRiffle FarmsWe'd love to hear what tips you have for combating the Winter Blues! Send us a note or a voice memo!
(Part 3/3) This is a case from Robin's Patreon vault, so it may be new to some of you. February 17, 1988. Garrett County, Maryland. While working a shift at her family's restaurant, 19-year old Cathy Ford receives a series of phone calls which prompt her to leave in order to attend a meeting with an unidentified individual, but she never returns. Three weeks later, the burned-out Ford Bronco Cathy had been driving is found in a wooded area in Grant County, West Virginia, located near a trailer being rented by a 31-year old sheriff's deputy named Paul Ferrell. Even though Cathy's body is never found, investigators discover compelling evidence to suggest that Paul murdered her. While Paul is charged and convicted of the crime, his defense team alleges that he did not receive a fair trial and even discover evidence to suggest that Cathy might still be alive somewhere. While Paul is ultimately granted parole and released from prison in 2004, Cathy is never found and the case remains shrouded in controversy.Support the Show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcold

Maureen and Jessica are joined by two local hunters, Ryan Savage and Jill Rawe. They discuss everything from accessible hunting to their favorite things to cook. Hunting is a huge tradition in Garrett County, and, as Jill describes in the episode, its a lifestyle. As non-hunters the Mountain Maryland Mamas were interested in gaining a perspective into the sport, culture and lifestyle of hunting. Todd celebrates his neighbor’s lights and Tony introduces his Bagel Manifesto. Our sponsor this week is the Mountain Maryland Mamas podcast, a podcast that is mostly the mirror image of ours. Covering the Deep Creek and Garrett County area, they do for the mountain resort what we do for the beach. Kind of. I mean, they’re nicer than me, but they seem to have Todd’s enthusiasm for their area.I listened to their most recent episode celebrating the mountains at Xmas. If you have an affinity for the region, check out their show. We kind of forced them to be our sponsor because they reached out to us about our Deep Creek Lake episode, so this isn’t a paid promotion or anything like that. We just like what they’re doing and think you might, too. Speaking of things you might like, after years of threatening, I’ve begun producing my Bagel Manifesto. This episode of Ballot and Beyond, contributed by the Maryland Women's Heritage Center, was written and read by Judy A. Carbone, President of AAUW-Garrett County Branch and a volunteer with Maryland Women's Heritage Center. Catherine Sweet may have remained unknown to history if it were not for a front-page article published in The Sun of Baltimore, Maryland, on May 8, 1896. The article was about the first municipal election in the town of Loch Lynn Heights in Garrett County, Maryland. Catherine almost was the first woman to vote in a municipal election in the state, but in the end, that distinction was not to be hers. “Be really aware that you don’t know what you don’t know.” – Mike Koch, President and Co-Founder, FireFly Farms “You have to realize you can’t do everything.” – Pablo Solanet, Creative Director and Co-Founder, FireFly Farms Mike Koch and Pablo Solanet are co-founders of FireFly Farms, known for their award-winning goat cheeses. They operate a friendly retail store and cheese production facility in Accident, MD near Deep Creek Lake. Before making Garrett County their full-time home, they were living and working in Washington, D.C. Mike was a senior leader for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while Pablo was a pastry chef at New Heights restaurant. Mike and Pablo originally purchased their Garrett County farm and home as a vacation and weekend getaway. When their neighbor had nanny goats available after completing a 4-H project, they jumped into goat farming. One weekend they experimented with making cheese, and a new business was born! Listen to the podcast, watch the full-length video or highlight videos for key takeaways: Mike and Pablo bought their farm in 1997 as a country home and Washington, D.C. getaway. Both co-founders were early foodies. They started making goat cheese because a neighbor had nanny goats for a 4-H project that were giving milk. Pablo grew up in Argentina and spent summers working at his grandparents’ ranch. He moved to the U.S. at age 19. Pablo was the pioneer! He left his restaurant position and moved to Garrett County full-time to take care of the goats. There were moments of culture shock and tough winters. Mike’s grandfather had an 88-acre farm in Iowa with cows, pigs, goats, corn and other crops where Mike spent his summers. He grew up making cheese with his grandmother. His great-great-grandfather was a cheese maker in Switzerland. Mike continued to work in D.C. for ten years after FireFly was started. He then held economic development posts in Garrett County and D.C. FireFly won Blue and Silver awards in 2002 at their first American Cheese Society competition. These cheeses were created by Pablo using milk from goats that he raised on their farm. Mike and Pablo no longer raise goats. They purchase milk from nine local, family farms. They self-financed their first twenty years in business, drawing on savings and Mike’s stock options. They recently completed a Series A fundraising round to finance expansion. The first FireFly staff were brought on-board to produce cheese and to help with sales and marketing. FireFly cheeses were sold only through grocery stores their first ten years in business. They opened the Accident, MD store in 2011 because they needed additional manufacturing space. Whole Foods allowed FireFly to start small by distributing to just a few stores in 2002 and 2003. Pablo used to deliver the cheese to Whole Foods himself. FireFly cheese are now available at Whole Foods, Wegmans, Balducci's and MOM’s Organic Market. FireFly Farms will be expanding in 2020 through a second manufacturing location in Maryland and a second retail location in Baltimore, MD. They recently hired six staff to support the expansion. The market for artisan cheese is growing and processed cheese is decreasing in the U.S. In Maryland the cheese making community is tight-knit and support each other's growth. When starting a business, find your community and help others. All boats rise together. Mike and Pablo are very involved with the American Cheese Society. There’s never a boring day at FireFly Farms! Capacity for best health ebbs and flows. That's life. Some call citizen capacity - "patient engagement." But that's too weak. Growing and sustaining citizen capacity is citizen power. Our personal and community health depends on it. Four Stories I'm going to tell you four stories: I'm unsteady when tired. I get tired more often. I'm more likely to fall when tired. My capacity diminishes. I resort to mobility aids to increase my capacity. First one cane, then two canes, now occasional wheelchair. Preventing injury maintains my capacity. Mobility aids build my capacity. At the same time maintaining and building capacity sustains hope in me. Hope creates capacity. It's reinforcing. I am one person building my capacity. When I was 16 (I know, I'm old), I started preparing for the draft. I went to a church for draft counseling and enrolled in a course that trained people to be draft counselors. It started me on a career of obtaining profound knowledge of the law and regulations to manage within them. I ended up counseling young men for almost two years. It served me well in my own mission not to be drafted. I built personal capacity, personal power, and guided others to exercise their power. I'm podcasting now. I joined a community - The Podcasting Fellowship. The sponsors of the community, Seth Godin and Alex DiPalma, created a seven-week course about podcasting and a platform for about 330 international aspiring podcasters to learn together and support each other. About 90 of those original participants are still meeting, six months later, learning and supporting each other. Somewhere between 90 and 250 of the 300+ are actively podcasting. Sustainable community capacity building. Garrett County, MD Health Department (population 30,000) created a platform for promoting the collaboration of almost 40 groups of local residents working together to solve the problems afflicting all communities, most with larger populations and resources – drug misuse, loneliness, immunization, food insecurity, oral health, medication management, maternal/fetal health, chronic disease management, transportation, homelessness. Community capacity building. Leveraging their resources! Build Citizen Power for Best Health Synonyms for capacity include competence, effectiveness, efficiency, potential and POWER. As in life, capacity ebbs and flows. Power ebbs and flows. I care about citizen capacity and citizen power. Some call it engagement, as in patient engagement. But that's too weak. Building citizen capacity adds to the base of community capabilities and sustains it. Where do we need to build citizen capacity? First and foremost - Habits for best health (personal and community) Coordination of care Policymaking Planning care Caregiving Informed decision-making Paying for healthcare Team building Leadership Storytelling, blogging, podcasting, vlogging, writing Advising governance, design, operations, and learning across healthcare Community services Community accessibility Lot’s of opportunity for building citizen capacity Success Factors for Citizen Power What does it take to sustain citizen capacity building? Sustaining capacity is cultural, habitual, and repetitive. Here's my partial list of success factors: Community (any definition) self-identifies a problem and is dying to solve it Common values, common language, trust Content in byte-sized (and bite-sized) pieces sensitive to people's most comfortable learning style Small support groups, mentoring Doing, more than listening Any level of participation works Continual learning Ongoing synchronous (face-to-face or voice-to-voice) and asynchronous (participate when convenient) sharing and feedback Transparent governance - how the capacity building process is managed New blood welcomed Have fun doing it Yes! Citizen Power-Good for what ails you. Closing

Within the last couple of months, two of Maryland's oldest family-owned newspapers were sold to media companies based in West Virginia. In April, the daily Frederick News-Post, established in 1883 by William T. Delaplaine and owned by his descendants, was sold to Ogden Newspapers, Inc. This week marks the end of Sincell family ownership of the weekly Republican in Oakland, Garrett County. NCWV Media, headquartered in Clarksburg, W.Va., purchased The Republican, which has been in the Sincell family since 1890. Donald W. Sincell, the paper's retiring editor, talks about the sale and about his experiences of recent years, railing with editorials against fracking in Western Maryland and the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump.Links:https://www.fredericknewspost.com/news/economy_and_business/services/will-randall-signs-off-after-years-of-family-publishing-history/article_d1ff9eca-f6a9-5021-80f2-d424307482ca.htmlhttps://www.therepublicannews.com/
Maryland may be home to our nation’s bustling, urban capital, but on the other side of the state are the Appalachians and many rural communities that struggle with poor Internet access. One of those communities is Garrett County. Residents, businesses, and institutions have limped along for years using outdated connections. Some people don’t have any … Continue reading "Garrett County Builds Better Connections By Combining Technologies in Rural Maryland – Community Broadband Bits Podcast 275"
Parenting is no easy feat and kids don't come with a guidebook when they're first born. There is obviously no "one-size-fits-all" as everyone grows up in a household with different values, parenting styles and the like. With all the overwhelming parenting advice out there, there's definitely a need for a judgment free space—and Bridget Nolan Manley created the perfect outlet just for that particular purpose. What I love about Bridget's approach is her view on how it takes a village via both online and offline methods for any kind of authentic connection. I also love her candor and rawness in revealing what collectively goes through most parents' minds that get rarely addressed in the everyday. Listen to how her podcast came to be and the many things she learned from parents of all walks of life who shared their stories with her. Who is Bridget? Bridget Nolan Manley is the host of Birds In A Tree, a podcast about parenting featuring the good, the bad, the hard and the glorious. Through each story, she hopes that listeners will find the bond and similarities that parents can share. This married mama of two kids grew up rural Appalacia and lives in Garrett County, MD. Quotes from Bridget The village is what you put out is what you’re gonna get back. (15:44) I read this great piece just this weekend and it was about what successful people do that other people aren't doing. And of the points that resonated with me (and I was a reporter and news was a big deal to me, even when I was working from home I was able to keep the news in the background) ... going back to this article, it compared time to a pie. And there's only so much pie. And successful people don't have more time than you, but nobody ever says... 'I'm gonna learn to play the saxophone and spend less time with my kids.' (18:03) What the power lies in is listening to someone's story. (20:50) What You’ll Learn How Bridget made the transition from traditional radio to podcasting Her inspiration for starting this podcast arose from the challenges and concerns within the parenting space How her love of interviewing and connecting with other parents helped grow her audience Resources and How to Connect: Bridget's Podcast: Birds in a Tree Social Media: Facebook and Twitter Resource Mentioned: Be the Change Video Other Listening Options: Individual player or full player view on website: http://lorirochino.com/podcast-2/
