Textile Waste and the Catastrophe at Kantamanto

Early this year there was a catastrophic fire at the world's biggest market for selling and upcycling second-hand clothes. Kantamanto market, in Ghana's capital Accra, was accidently set alight, and most of the small stalls in the retail part of the huge market burnt to the ground. Two people died, many were injured, and the livelihoods of thousands of people were destroyed, driving many of them into debt and desperation. But the impact of the fire spread much further than that.    You may not have heard of Kantamanto market, but it plays a vital role in dealing with our textile excess. This is where many of the clothes we donate to charity shops, goodwill centres, or put in textile bins end up. The West African market takes bales of clothing from all over the world and does its best to recycle them. But what can't be used is dumped at informal waste sites or burned, causing mounting environmental problems in Accra's streets and on Ghana's beautiful beaches.     This episode of Haptic and Hue's Tales of Textiles looks at the tragedy and the ingenuity of Kantamanto and tracks the global cost of fast fashion and textile excess. Will the demand for cheap textiles and clothing stop increasing year on year and can they ever be properly recycled? And what can we as consumers do about it?    For more information about this episode and pictures of the people and places mentioned in this episode please go to https://hapticandhue.com/tales-of-textiles-series-7/.   To join  Friends of Haptic & Hue with an extra podcast every month hosted by Jo Andrews and Bill Taylor – here's the link: https://hapticandhue.com/join/

ECHOVISION is the latest experience from multi-disciplinary artist Jiabao Li that has three major parts. The first part is a mobile-phone based mixed reality experience that does a metaphoric translation of echolocation by using LiDAR to detect your immediate physical surroundings, and then reveals it with a rippling shader that is voice activated. The second part is a video that poetically visualizes different bat calls that have been identified by AI into different contextual domains, and there's a really awesome haptic couch experience that goes along with it. The last part is a field trip to the Congress Street bridge to watch the emergence of hundreds of thousands of bats come out at night as they go to eat. I caught up Li to hear more about all of her interdisciplinary and interspecies collaborations on this piece. This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. Music: Fatality

IN THE CURRENT OF BEING is a powerfully-told story about electroshock conversion therapy using haptics, mixed reality, and a free-flowing dream logic structure paired with a documentary interview of a survivor. It was a deeply moving experience, and won the new Agog Social Impact Award at SXSW (more on that below). The director is BODY OF MINE's Cameron Kostopolous, who continues exploring embodied storytelling about a very timely topic. There were a handful of politically-themed pieces this year, and this was particularly prescient considering that the Supreme Court announced during SXSW that it would hear arguments about Chiles v. Salazar that challenges the constitutionality of Colorado's ban on conversion therapy. Kostopolous is telling the story of trauma from conversion therapy, and hopes to be a part of an impact campaign that bans conversion therapy in at least one state. However this may be impossible if the Supreme Court declares conversion therapists a free speech right, even if there's little evidence that shows any merit that conversion therapy even works and is considered by Kostopolous to be a form of torture. Flax is Back! The Great Linen Revival

There is a global flax revival underway. In the great linen belt of North Western Europe, the land under cultivation has more than doubled in a decade and linen production is steadily increasing worldwide. After years of being spurned for ‘easier' man-made fibres, or cotton, once again linen is being valued. It may only be around half-a-percent of the world's textile fibres at present, but this time it is being grown not just for fine fabrics, but also because it's gentler on the land. It needs less water, fewer pesticides and fertilizers, and new uses are being found for it too, from creating surfboards to skis, from acoustic insulation to car doors.    Flax looks back as well as forward. Like no other yarn, it is the ancient fibre of civilisation. Linen has walked the long centuries alongside mankind. In Europe and Western Asia, its cultivation reaches back thousands of years to the beginning of human settlement and farming. It clothed the pharaohs of Egypt in life and death, it powered the ships of ancient Greece and Troy, it is mentioned more than 80 times in the Old Testament. This is the fabric that wrapped the Dead Sea Scrolls to keep them safe down the centuries.    Join us this month as Haptic and Hue travels to Ireland, once the undisputed centre of the world's linen processing industry to see what it is making of the great flax revival and how Irish linen is faring.   For more information about this episode and pictures of the people and places mentioned in this episode please go to https://hapticandhue.com/tales-of-textiles-series-6/

Braille Screen Input: What’s New in iOS and iPad OS 18? (Extra 77)

Braille Screen Input has been overhauled! iOS and iPad OS 18, released on Monday 16 September, include the biggest refresh of Braille Screen Input since the feature was first introduced in iOS 8. Although you can, for the most part, still use Braille Screen Input as you always have done, the new functionality in Apple's latest flagship operating systems is a source of much excitement throughout the blind community and will almost certainly take your Braille Screen Input experience to the next level. Join us in this episode as Matthew Horspool talks us through what's new. Summary of New Features New gestures for entering and exiting: double tap the far edges of the screen with two fingers to enter. To exit, pinch outwards or inwards, or perform a two finger scrub. BSI is also still available in the rotor and if this is enabled, the rotor gesture still works to exit, but it does not work if BSI is removed from the rotor. You can now braille a for sign. There are keyboard clicks and haptics during text entry, the same as those for the QWERTY on-screen keyboard. When searching for apps on the home screen, you can now use grade 2. You now have access to a Braille Item Chooser from within Braille Screen Input. It works in a similar way to searching for apps on the home screen, but functions within apps. You can now enter Braille Screen Input automatically when encountering a text field. Braille Screen Input now uses the Braille Table options in Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Braille to determine whether input is contracted, uncontracted etc. Swipe up with two fingers to change braille table. There is a new Command Mode, accessible via a three finger swipe left or right from within Braille Screen Input, or a tripple tap with two fingers at the far edges of the screen from elsewhere. Gestures in Command Mode are akin to braille display commands with the space bar held down, e.g. type the letter h in Command Mode to go to the home screen. You can also move the cursor and perform text selection with one finger and two finger swipe gestures. When using the Braille Item Chooser or searching for apps on the home screen using Braille Screen Input, you can opt to remain in Command Mode when swiping right with two fingers rather than exiting Braille Screen Input altogether. When in Command Mode, if the setting to enter Braille Screen Input when encountering a text box is enabled, VoiceOver will automatically switch from Command Mode to Braille Entry Mode when a text box is encountered. There are new sounds for entering and exiting Braille Screen Input, calibrating the dots and changing between Command Mode and Braille Entry Mode. There is now a setting to determine whether translated text appears on the screen whilst Braille Screen Input is active. All Braille Screen Input gesture assignments, plus the assignments for entering Braille Screen Input, can be customised. Braille Screen Input now supports Japanese braille. N.B. if the master toggle for VoiceOver sounds is switched off in Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Sounds and Haptics, the new Braille Screen Input sounds will not play. Supported Devices iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, 2024 iPad Pro (M4), 2024 iPad Air (M2), 2024 iPad Pro 11-inch 5th generation, 2024 iPad Air 6th generation, 2024 iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, 2023 iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, 2022 iPad Pro 12.9-inch 6th generation, 2022 iPad Pro 11-inch 4th generation, 2022 iPad Air 5th generation, 2022 iPad 10th generation, 2022 iPhone SE 3rd generation, 2022 iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, 2021 iPad Pro 12.9-inch 5th generation, 2021 iPad Pro 11-inch 3rd generation, 2021 iPad 9th generation, 2021 iPad mini 6th generation, 2021 iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, 2020 iPad Pro 12.9-inch 4th generation, 2020 iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd generation, 2020 iPad Air 4th generation, 2020 iPad 8th generation, 2020 iPhone SE 2nd generation, 2020 iPad 7th generation, 2019 iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, 2019 iPad Air 3rd generation, 2019 iPad mini 5th generation, 2019 iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation, 2018 iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation, 2018 iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, 2018 Apple Support Articles Type braille directly on the iPhone screen with VoiceOver Type braille directly on the iPad screen with VoiceOver Common Braille commands for VoiceOver on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Customize VoiceOver gestures and keyboard shortcuts on iPhone Customize VoiceOver gestures and keyboard shortcuts on iPad

Allison A. Roberts is a lens-based artist and experimental filmmaker who works in video layers, collages, and projections. Her work requires the viewer to keep an open mind in that not everything is as it seems, which you'll see for yourself on her website and Vimeo channel. Be especially sure to check out the film Haptic discussed in the podcast. "My lens-based work is situated at the intersection of still photography, the moving image, and installation. I explore temporality, place, and identity, as experienced during periods of transition- addressing change, uncertainty, and resiliency. The intersections and juxtapositions of image and surface inform my approach to physically and digitally layering photographs- positioning projections to transform and merge with surfaces and objects to address how our memories or anxieties inform our perception of the present.   The subtle performative process inherent in my still photography is central to my moving image work, whether discrete video or integral elements of an installation. In these works, I manipulate the screen, a translucent material, during the projection and filming. This performative element speaks to the effort of shaping the elusive through repeated attempts of control and manipulation." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/experimentalfilmpodcast/support

Great tapestries have been used to decorate and embellish homes and palaces for centuries, and yet the hands that created these works remain almost completely forgotten.  Art institutions treasure their ancient tapestries woven painstakingly over many months, and even years and know almost everything about them, except the names of those who created these extraordinary pieces. Modern artists, like Picasso, Henry Moore and Marc Chagall see their work rendered into a different and exciting form by tapestry weavers, but no-one remembers who the weaver was or is.   This episode of Haptic and Hue looks at tapestry weaving and the process of collaboration that goes on between an artist and a weaver to produce a new work. It asks if tapestry weavers are forever destined to be seen as anonymous helping hands, or if their skill, craft and artistry is now, finally, beginning to be recognised as an art in its own right.  We talk to a gifted tapestry weaver about what it is like to work on a piece for several months and how much of herself she pours into each new weaving.   For more information, a full transcript and further links, see  https://hapticandhue.com/tales-of-textiles-series-6/

With a combination of solo conversations as well as intriguing interviews with some of the leading experts in the field, the Makes Sense Podcast offers cost free content with the intention of helping you execute on the concept of changing the way you look at things, so that the things you look at begin to change.  Today we'll Make Sense of the Science, Art and Philosophy of Making Sense. The intention of this episode is to arm and equip you with the basic language and understanding of your Sense Making Machine, that is operating 24 hours a day and seven days a week. We will also become aware of the fact that this sense making machine has been programmed in large part by outside sources, forces and people. Not necessarily by you. Dr. Perry recently co-authored a fantastic book with Oprah Winfrey called What Happened to you. A book that unpacks unresolved childhood trauma and its impact on childhood development and thus, your programmed Sense Making Machine. Or perception of reality. The idea behind it is simple in principle yet complex in application. Perry speaks about the vast network of immeasurable functions occurring all at once in the human brain that manifest in your conscious mind as thoughts, feelings and an all around awareness of what you call reality. In fact, that brain of yours has the ability to process between 40-70,000 thoughts a day. Of course they don't all get absorbed and manifest as the thoughts and feelings you actually perceive. Your sense making machine somehow selects a few of those thoughts and tethers to them in its creation of a baseline determination of what you call your reality. Good day, bad day. Happy, sad. Depressed vs confident. All subconsciously chosen by this all and powerful OZ that ironically sits comfortably in the only place in the human body that is completely protected by bone. Must be important eh? YOUR VIRTUAL REALITY SUIT: So as we move about our day, our brain is working with our 5 primary senses to perceive and process all we interface with. The end product is a highly effective description of what's going on. It helps us stay away from harm, move towards pleasure, and determine good from evil. All in conjunction with things like natural selection. Our eyes do the seeing. Our nose does the smelling. Ears do the listening. Mouth does the tasting. Skin does the touching etc.. I like to refer to the 5 receptacles as our Virtual Reality Suit. Named after the realization that these five senses operate the same way a pair of virtual reality glasses work. Almost like a VR Haptic Suit. In the VR world we recognize that the Goggles and Haptic suit are giving us an Artificially Generated virtual experience. Almost like a suggested experience that's just for the sake of experiencing. So this sense making machine consists of your brain which we can call “Mission Control” and your 5 senses and receptacle aka your “Virtual Reality Suit”. It runs on auto pilot and is working its ass off as we speak and helping you make sense of this podcast episode. Does all of this make sense?  WHERE THINGS GET STICKY? Where things get sticky is when we notice a glitch or wrinkle in this sense making system. Sometimes we hit a wall where we can't figure something out. It doesn't make sense. When this happens, our sense making system moves from Defcon One to Defcon 2. It experiences the thoughts and feelings associated with confusion which are correlated with other feelings like frustration.  Things get a little sticky when you become aware of this sense making process taking place and become conscious of two things. Your Sense Making Machine is calling all the shots. It's not only interfacing, analyzing and creating perceptions. It's also making the decisions on how to react and respond to everything we interface with. Most often without you being aware of it all. So brain awareness perception was Dr. Bruce Perry's way of explaining the act of becoming aware of this. Your Sense Making Machine has been programmed by outside forces and not by you. From birth, as your vulnerable brain developed, all you received and consumed from your MFTPSE (Your Mother, Father, Teacher, Preacher, Society and Evolution) and developed what it considered its baseline reality. Or its base line encyclopedia of how the world makes sense. You learned what to do and not to do. You consumed religious, political and ethical beliefs systems. You picked up concepts about relationships, partying and a specific explanation of how to go through life and what it means to have a good life vs. bad. However, all of these concepts were those of your programmers and never your own. In fact, when you think you are making your own decisions, they are being influenced by this program as well. In the grand scheme of things, this sticky wrinkle and the unpleasant feelings associated with it can actually become a blessing as they are the necessary obstacle we must take prior to reclaiming control of our sense making machine.  It's only when we practice this present time consciousness around our sense making system and how it works, that we can learn to place a pause on it and voluntarily step into the space between that which we are interfacing with and perceiving. In other words the stimulus and our response to it, that we can have a fighting chance to create our own perception and response. Have you ever considered this as you go about your day? Ask yourself questions like “Hmmm, I wonder where I got that idea?” or “Hmmm, I wonder why I think and feel that way?”  If you have, then you can understand the first step of a system and strategy I developed called the IRS (Interface Response System). This system is a 4 part strategy to reclaim control of your sense making system and teach it over time to work for you rather than happen TO YOU. We'll discuss in later episodes in more depth. Yet for the sake of this discussion regarding the acknowledgment of our Sense Making Machine, were considering the value of learning to take an extra step in our daily interfacing with reality to simply pause the knee jerk reflexive nature of our programmed sense making machine and allowing ourselves to challenge the stimulus with our own thoughts using things like logic and rational considerations. Rather than letting our programmed system call the shots. This is what it looks like to both get out of your own way and reclaim control of your reality as the dominant force and shot caller. It's as simple as practicing the insertion of a specific sound that encompasses the pause of your programmed response and moves you into a space of curious contemplation. Where you have the opportunity to use logic and rationale evaluating the stimulus or event in reference to your desired state and goals in life. It sounds like this. “Hmmm?” It says, “ok, i see, i feel and i think, however, I am going to consider other things like, is this even about me? Does this matter? Is this useful and in support of what I want, need and must have? Just imagine how many times we get caught up in, distracted by and triggered by things that really don't matter and have little or nothing to do with you or your goals and dreams. Lots of wasted time as a result of our unconscious program doing what it thinks it needs to do?  The power of Hmmm? I was sitting in an airport, having a cocktail and multiple TV's were on. A woman sitting next to me, a few drinks ahead of me if you know what i mean. Started ranting to me about the news cast taking place on the TV in front of us. It was a story about the current president at that time. Donald Trump. FYI, I don't watch the news. She spent approximately 15 minutes telling me how unhappy she was with him as the President, and shared very explicative words describing her hatred and frustration with him as a human. After 15 minutes of her talking to me, she decides to finally take a breather and ask for my opinion. My only answers to her all the while were “Hmmm?” Simply observing her behavior and obvious passion for the topic, while not caring in the least about the topic as it had nothing to do with me, was out of my control and in no way shape or form was connected to my goals or the things that mattered most to me that day. She said “Right?” I replied “Hmmm?” with a tone that implied confusion in the question. She said “Him?” and pointed to the TV. I replied “What about him?” She said he's an asshole right?” I replied, “Oh, I don't know, I've never met him.” She got up and left. There's a famous saying that if you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change. I believe I first heard this from the late great Wayne Dyer. What we are talking about, is the first step to actually executing on this powerful concept. The first step in changing the way we look at things is recognizing that there is a pre-programmed sense making machine that controls how we look at things. Once you recognize the potential danger connected to allowing that program, which was uploaded to your operating system by others that may have very well not known what was best for you. It makes a ton of sense to place a pause on that knee jerk perception and reaction system and have a look at things in a more logical and rational fashion. This being the first step in the IRS (Interface Response System) - A 4 step process and strategy I created to help people better make sense of the things they interface with, thus helping you change the way you look at things so the things you look at can actually begin to change and do so in a way that better suits your wants and needs in life. So there you have it. You are now armed and equipped with the first tool in your belt as we claim more control of your sense making machine. Brain Awareness Perception. By understanding that what you see is in fact what you get. However, what you see is what you've been programmed and conditioned to see. We're going to learn how to control what we see and re-configure and bend our reality to better suit our needs.
