Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2022 10:46

Tuesday, February 22, 2022 Hoover Institution, Stanford University   The Hoover Institution hosts Spies, Lies, and Algorithms: A Conversation with Amy Zegart and Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday, February 22 from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. PT.  Please join us for a conversation with Amy Zegart as part of her tour with her new book Spies, Lies, and Algorithms: The History and Future of American Intelligence. The conversation will be moderated by Director Condoleezza Rice with an introduction by Michael McFaul. “Today we face a critical juncture for American spy agencies, as big as 9/11 — only most people don't know it,” says Amy B. Zegart, one of the country's leading experts on intelligence and a professor at Stanford University. “New dangers come from tech, not terrorists. Emerging technologies like AI and social media are weakening the strong and empowering the weak, fundamentally changing dynamics of international conflict. To be blunt: The U.S. is losing its intelligence advantage.” To help us better understand these looming threats, Zegart has written Spies, Lies, and Algorithms: The History and Future of American Intelligence (Princeton University Press; February 1, 2022). It's the first comprehensive book on the past, present, and future of American intelligence—and outlines what's urgently needed to protect our nation today. The book draws on over thirty years of research (including new research just for this book) and hundreds of interviews with current and former intelligence officials.  Weak intelligence makes us more vulnerable to attacks on our power grids, water supply, elections, corporate network servers, and nuclear weapons. Helping the American public better understand these evolving threats is crucial. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Amy Zegart is the Morris Arnold and Nona Jean Cox Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Professor of Political Science (by courtesy) at Stanford University. She is also a Senior Fellow at Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Chair of Stanford's Artificial Intelligence and International Security Steering Committee, and a contributing writer at The Atlantic. She specializes in U.S. intelligence, emerging technologies and national security, grand strategy, and global political risk management. The author of five books, Zegart's award-winning research includes the leading academic study of intelligence failures before 9/11 — Spying Blind: The CIA, the FBI, and the Origins of 9/11 (Princeton 2007). Her forthcoming book, Spies, Lies, and Algorithms (Princeton 2022) examines technological challenges to American intelligence. Zegart's research has been published in The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere. She has served on the NSC staff, advised senior officials about intelligence and foreign policy, and most recently served as a commissioner on the 2020 CSIS Technology and Intelligence Task Force. She received an A.B. in East Asian studies magna cum laude from Harvard University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University. Condoleezza Rice is the Tad and Dianne Taube Director of the Hoover Institution and its Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy. She is also a founding partner of Rice, Hadley, Gates & Manuel LLC, an international strategic consulting firm. Rice currently serves on the board of online-storage technology company Dropbox, energy software company C3, and Makena Capital, a private endowment firm; and is a member of the boards of the George W. Bush Institute, the Commonwealth Club, the Aspen Institute, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Previously, Rice served on various additional boards, including those of KiOR Inc., the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the Transamerica Corporation, the Hewlett-Packard Company, the University of Notre Dame, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. From 2005 to 2009, Rice served as the sixty-sixth secretary of state of the United States, the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post. Rice also served as assistant to the president for National Security Affairs for President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005, the first woman to hold this position. Michael A. McFaul is the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution as well as a professor of political science, director and senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He also currently works as a news analyst for NBC.  His areas of expertise include international relations, Russian politics, comparative democratization, and American foreign policy.  From January 2012 to February 2014, he served as the US ambassador to the Russian Federation.  Before becoming ambassador, he served for three years as a special assistant to the president and senior director for Russian and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council.

Prior to the 2012 FCPA Guidance, the DOJ issued two 2007 Opinion Releases which offered guidance to companies considering whether, and if so how, to incur travel and lodging expenses for government officials. Both Opinion Releases laid out the specific representations made to the DOJ, which led to them to approve the travel to the U.S. by foreign governmental officials. These facts provided strong guidance to any company which seeks to bring such governmental officials to the U.S. for a legitimate business purpose. In Opinion Release 07-01, the company was desired to cover the domestic expenses for a trip to the U.S. for a six-person delegation of the government of an Asian country for an educational and promotional tour of one of the requestor’s U.S. operations sites. In 07-02, the Company desired to pay certain domestic expenses for a trip within the U.S. by approximately six junior to mid-level officials of a foreign government for an educational program at the Requestor’s US headquarters, prior to the delegates attendance at an annual six-week long internship program for foreign insurance regulators sponsored by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). When Walmart Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) or GSK are in the news for alleged FCPA violations, it provides you a good reminder to review your compliance program. Not only from your compliance procedures perspective, but to test to determine if the policies and procedures are being followed or if there are issues which you might need to look at more closely. Three key takeaways: Travel for foreign officials continues to plague companies for compliance violations. The key is being reasonable in your costs. Always remember to record travel expenses correctly based upon documented costs.

Today on the show, it is a great privilege to chat with Paul Dunn. Paul is the man behind B1G1, a global business initiative on a mission to create a world full of giving. He is a 4-time TEDx Speaker, entrepreneur, and master presenter. Paul spearheaded the Business for Good Movement, which has inspired businesses across the world to give back to those in need. I asked Paul to share his very first memory of wanting to do good for somebody else. Paul talks about how from the start of his life, giving back was always his passion. At a young age, he was able to share a table with people like David Packard and Bill Hewlett, Founders of The Hewlett -Packard Company. In their presence, he learned the two driving forces that pushed him to do what he does now; giving abundantly. In the middle part of our conversation, Paul tells us that 84 businesses are being founded every hour. Why is this number so high? Why are so many people choosing to build a business? Is it for themselves or the greater good? He recalls a quote from a Richard Branson speech, where he said, “Businesses who do good, do better.” We discuss why developing and discovering a business’s purpose, passion, and values are so important. When you listen to Paul talk about his purpose and passion in this episode, you’ll find yourself reflecting on your business and your life, asking the question: “Why do I do what I do?” What You Will Discover in This Episode: The story behind Paul’s decision to create a movement that encouraged charitable giving. The two driving forces that lead Paul to create B1G1. The 3 L’s that determine your Legacy. How business owners can leverage their legacy. Paul sharing his passion for giving abundantly and why all entrepreneurs should follow suit. Paul’s tipping point: How the 2006 tsunami made him realise that he has a bigger obligation to the world. The mindset shift that business owners need to make to embrace the idea of doing business while giving back. Presencia, LLC provides marketing and sales consulting services in the government, education, enterprise and SMB markets. Previously, Ron served as Mayor of San José, the Capital of Silicon Valley and the nation’s 10thth largest city from 1999-2006. His achievements included nationally recognized initiatives that strengthened neighborhoods, improved public education, and ensured the economic vitality of the city with high quality public services and effective solutions to affordable housing and regional transportation projects.   Before his election as Mayor, Gonzales worked as an executive with the Hewlett-Packard Company, in the areas of marketing, human resources, and corporate philanthropy. Gonzales served for eight years (1989-1996) on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. As a two-time mayor and member of the Sunnyvale City Council (1979-87), Gonzales helped initiate governmental efficiency measures that were recognized in the best-selling book Reinventing Government. Funding secured.” That share price was about 20% above the stock’s trading price earlier that day.  According to the Wall Street Journal, the SEC is probing whether there was any factual basis to Musk’s tweet. If not, Musk may have violated securities regulations by giving false or misleading information to the public. It’s also looking into whether Musk’s tweet was designed to pump Tesla’s share price in advance of some $920 million in convertible bonds the company has coming due in March that the company may have to tap into its cash flow to pay down if it can’t raise the funds from investors.   New York City caps ride sharing licenses   The City of New York became the first U.S. city to cap the number of licenses it issues to ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft. The New York City Council voted 39-6 to approve the measure, which livery and yellow cab drivers hailed, as they’ve seen their hourly wages decline, as Uber and Lyft have increased their number of drivers from 25,000 to 80,000 over the last three years in the city. Uber and Lyft issued statements against the cap, saying that it would lead to an increase in fares. Lyft spokesman Joseph Okpaku said the move would specifically harm communities of color and passengers in the outer boroughs.   Tribune kills $3.9 billion Sinclair deal   Tribune Media has killed its $3.9 billion deal with Sinclair citing breach of contract. Tribune us arguing the 15-month deal has taken too long and that Sinclair has been too aggressive with regulators. The announcement came following the FCC’s 4-0 decision to refer the merger to an administrative law judge. It also came amidst a new class-action lawsuit brought by national advertisers and a DOJ investigation into whether Tribune and Sinclair colluded to fix advertising sales rates.   Instagram added more users than Snap’s total usership   Snapchat parent Snap Inc. reported a 2% drop in its monthly usership in the second quarter—its first reported decline since its founding in 2011--to about 188 million monthly users. Competitor Instagram’s monthly usership, on the other hand, now stands at 1 billion. This translated to a $353 million revenue loss for Snap, which was up by 2 percentage points in after-hours trading Monday to 12.57 per share.   Pentagon limits fitness devices in sensitive areas   Finding that fitness devices posed a “significant risk” to military personnel, the Pentagon issued an order last week restricting military personnel from wearing fitness tracking devices in sensitive locations. The new order allows commanders to decide whether to ban the devices in their specific area, based on the nature of the military activities happening there. For example, using tracking devices in training areas, such as Fort Hood, would be less of a concern than using the devices in less secure areas during military operations abroad. The new rule is a response to the fact that fitness app Strava publishes a Heatmap that shows where in the world its subscribers, including military personnel, have been exercising, which can shed light on classified troop movements. Facebook to require more information from page managers   Finally, Facebook announced a new authorization process for page managers that will make it more difficult for fake accounts to maintain Facebook pages. The new process will require page managers to secure their account with two-factor authentication. Facebook says it will also be more transparent about who manages each page by adding a “People Who Manage This Page” section. It will also show when pages have been merged. Facebook says it will begin enforcing the new standards later this month and eventually roll out the changes to Instagram as well.

ANDY CROWE ● BILL YATES ● NICK WALKER ● LOUIS ALDERMAN NICK WALKER:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers.  This is our chance to meet and talk with you about project management certification, as well as all the issues that matter to you as a professional project manager. I'm Nick Walker, and with me are the guys who can rightfully be called project management experts.  They have the answers to your questions:  Andy Crowe and Bill Yates.  Plus, we are overflowing with experts today.  With us, Louis Alderman, the manager of curriculum development at Velociteach.  I guess that's why we have a round table in our studio instead of a square one because we'd run out of corners otherwise.  Louis, great to have you here with us. LOUIS ALDERMAN:  Thank you. NICK WALKER:  Let's just start off with you.  You know, tell us a little bit about yourself.  When did you join the Velociteach team? LOUIS ALDERMAN:  I came to Velociteach in 2005.  I was a customer of Velociteach and a firm believer in the process of Velociteach because it worked for me. NICK WALKER:  Aha. LOUIS ALDERMAN:  So that was my first exposure to Velociteach.  And the longer I've been with the organization, the team, the better and better I feel about it.  So it's just been a growth. BILL YATES:  Louis, you said you were a customer.  Who was your instructor? LOUIS ALDERMAN:  I was privileged to have Andy Crowe as my instructor. NICK WALKER:  How about that? LOUIS ALDERMAN:  A young man at the time that I was very impressed with.  He had a lot going.  And so... BILL YATES:  Back in the day. LOUIS ALDERMAN:  Yeah.  He really represented Velociteach very well. BILL YATES:  That's great. NICK WALKER:  Well, so you've been in the trenches yourself.  Tell us a little bit about that, maybe some of your experience. LOUIS ALDERMAN:  Well, I started directly out of college working for Hewlett-Packard Company.  That was my first employer.  And I worked for HP for almost 29 years.  And then I took an early retirement and within the same week went to work for Velociteach.  So it was sort of a planned project transition, so it worked well for me. At HP I had various lives and started off in technical support engineering, where I actually had my first tour of training in education by developing training for other engineers on our products and how to support them.  That was about 25 percent of my career at HP.  I spent another 25 percent in sales, enjoying going out and visiting and selling to other computer companies at the time. The second half of my career at HP I had tours of duty as a business process analyst.  I was an IT project manager about 30 percent of my experience at HP.  And then I served about another 10 percent there in the project management office, working with portfolio management and process design.  So it was a great run.  And I'm right where I'm supposed to be. NICK WALKER:  Excellent.  Which is right here with us.  We thank you so much for being here with us.  And we will see you from time to time again, I'm sure, on this round table. LOUIS ALDERMAN:  Looking forward to it. NICK WALKER:  Hey, let's jump right in.  One of the things about this podcast, at least for me, is that almost every time we meet, I tend to learn a new word, a new phrase, a new concept, sometimes a new abbreviation or acronym.  And one of those is the main topic of today's podcast.  It is – drum roll, please – the PMBOK Guide, PMBOK, P-M-B-O-K.  And that to me is kind of a mysterious one.  So Andy, this is my educational moment; okay?  What is the PMBOK Guide? ANDY CROWE:  Well, it's a very important document for us, Nick, as project managers.  It's an acronym, and it actually stands for a guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge.  So it's a book.  And it's a big, thick book.  It's an ANSI standard.  And I believe it is the only ANSI standard for project management out there ri...

With increased stress in working environments combined with outside pressures to speed up performance, organizations have to reflect on this question in order to see where they are unintentionally blocking contribution. Anne Murray Allen is currently the Director for the Executive Development Center at Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management. In this role Anne is responsible for developing non-degree certificate programs in business and public management essentials, sustainability, and industry-specific training. Her personal areas of interest and research are in understanding how healthy, performance-based organizations are built and sustained. These ‘social networks of collaboration’ are a key ingredient for organizations and communities to move into the future taking effective action in building a sustainable future. Anne retired from Hewlett-Packard Company in 2005, having served in a variety of management and executive positions over a 16 year period. These included leading company-wide Knowledge and Intranet Management, strategic planning (at the division and at the corporate level), culture integration for the Compaq/HP merger, IT for the Imaging and Printing Group, production management for scanners and Inkjet cartridges. While still at HP, Anne co-authored an article with Dennis Sandow entitled, “The Nature of Social Collaboration” published in Reflections Journal, May 2005. Anne’s social action research initiative while she worked in Hewlett Packard turned up some surprising results on what lies at the roots of phenomenal results and what you must embody as a leader to support their high functioning.
