Anne Imhof talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Imhof, who was born in 1978 in Giessen in Germany, is primarily known for her epic durational performances involving diverse collectives of dancers, musicians and actors. Their movement, speech and song is built from often fragmentary gestures, and informed by a wealth of sources as well as the innate expertise of the performers themselves, which Imhof harnesses to choreograph tableaux of rich affective power. A reflection on and of contemporary societal conditions, these works are also profoundly engaged with cultural and performance traditions, from the languages and forms of contemporary dance and ballet to rock concerts and art history. Imhof's practice extends far beyond performance, involving painting and drawing, sculpture and sculptural installation, and film. In each language that she adopts, she overtly engages her audience and particularly their bodies, whether that is in the mode of address of her performance works, in sculptures that evoke barriers or surveillance mechanisms, or in paintings that overwhelm the viewer in their scale and the gravity of their imagery. She discusses the disparate creation of meaning in her work, through her own framing, her collaborators' performances and the viewers' experience. She reflects on the balance between structure and improvisation in her performances and the mutual trust that is key in working with dancers, choreographers, musicians and actors. She talks about the role of drawing in underpinning the other elements of her work. Among the references she discusses are to the early influence of teachers who recognised her interest in drawing and who led her to make copies of Michelangelo. She talks about Tino Sehgal and William Forsythe's formative influence and her admiration of cultural figures as diverse as the artists Cameron Rowland and Arthur Jafa, the philosopher Juliane Rebentisch and writers including Franz Kafka and Robert Bresson, whose screenplays she particularly admires. She gives insight into her life in the studio and answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Anne Imhof: Citizen, Sprüth Magers, London, until 1 August. Hosted on Acast. Karen L. Bowen and Dirk Imhof join Jana Byars to talk about their new book, The Burgeoning European Print Trade: The Distribution of Prints Via the Plantin-Moretus Press of Antwerp (Harvey Miller, 2025). The European print trade is an evocative topic. Not only art historians, but social, cultural, and economic historians all agree that it was of vital importance in the Early Modern Period, as the conveyer of established icons, as well as the most recent imagery and news. Yet, thus far it is often discussed solely on the basis of tantalizing, isolated case studies. Bowen and Imhof's ground-breaking publication will address this significant lacuna by demonstrating in unprecedented detail how booksellers were routinely engaged in the extensive international distribution and sale of hundreds of thousands of prints annually between the mid-sixteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries. Based upon the exceptionally well-preserved archives of the renowned Plantin-Moretus Press of Antwerp, this book presents the often-overlooked interwoven worlds of booksellers and print sellers, while documenting Antwerp's continued fame for the production and distribution of prints. Together with a remarkable array of clients, ranging from the cultivated and influential elite to ordinary laymen, these figures provide palpable examples of suppliers, buyers, and middlemen that reveal how they interacted with one another. Simultaneously, this work illuminates numerous critical related topics, ranging from how prints were priced and the relative quantities in which they were sold, to the importance of national and professional networks in these transactions. The result is an essential, novel study that clarifies how the print trade worked in practice during a burgeoning period in its evolution. Learn more about your ad choices. Maritime recovery sounds like something out of a movie — treasure chests, shipwrecks, and billions in gold sitting on the ocean floor. Even more so after recent headlines about a $20 billion wreck off the coast of Colombia. But as Stefan von Imhof, co-founder and CEO of Alts.co explains, it’s evolving into something far more structured, and potentially investable. He explains to Michael Thompson how technology, rising commodity prices and better coordination with governments are transforming deep-sea recovery - while warning it remains a high-risk, still unproven space. This is general information only. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Oliver Bell from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles about his work on chromatin-based regulatory systems that encode cellular memory and their implications for development and disease. The Interview starts with Dr. Bell describing his early career contributions to understanding the functionality of histone methylation in facilitating dosage compensation and gene silencing. His efforts at dissecting the complexities of epigenetic regulation culminate in significant discoveries that highlight the nuanced effects of chromatin adjustments on gene activity and stability across cell divisions. As we progress, Dr. Bell shares details about his postdoctoral research, where he engineered systems to study chromatin remodeling and the maintenance of transcriptional states through development. His innovative use of induced proximity to manipulate chromatin modifiers offers groundbreaking approaches to understanding how epigenetic states can be established and sustained, alongside the implications for therapeutic strategies in cancer treatment. An important aspect of our discussion centers on his identification of the ZFP462 protein, which plays a critical role in neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Bell outlines his lab's ongoing research into deciphering how this zinc finger protein interacts with enhancers to influence gene regulation in embryonic stem cells and its potential connection to specific diseases. This leads to an engaging dialogue about the relationship between 3D genome organization and epigenetic regulation, focusing on how disruptions in chromatin architecture may affect gene expression. Towards the end of our conversation, we touch upon the emerging potential of AI in epigenetic research, exploring how advances in technology could facilitate the screening of small molecules targeted at chromatin-modifying complexes. Dr. Bell offers a forward-looking perspective on the future applications of this research, revealing his aspirations for therapeutic developments based on his findings. Born out of the 2020 lockdowns, Alts.co has grown into a unique platform offering access to unconventional asset classes, including tequila barrels, sports ventures, and K-pop music rights. But how do you promote alternative investments like these without getting lost in the hype?A conversation with Stefan von Imhof, CEO of Alts.co.We covered:* How to deal with the fact that you can't be an expert in everything* The power of community and decentralized due diligence* The right risk-return profile for Alts offeringWatch it on YouTube or listen on all podcast apps.A few quotes from our conversationTrust vs Fun Trust is earned slowly but surely, and you can lose it like that if you're not careful. But that's why we're careful. And so, it feels good. It feels really good to bring great deals to the community. And yeah, if we have stories to tell on top of it, fantastic.I've asked Stefan a few questions about what I call “investing beyond returns”, because investing is not multi-dimensional; topics for dinner conversation, status, learning, etc., all matter. But it turns out that the answer is more boring than I was hoping. Returns matter more than anything else, and trust is built on returns. That Tequila TripWe've been to Mexico twice now. We've been working with our tequila dealer, and yes, he's as cool as he sounds, but we've been working with Miguel for about a year before this. And then as we matured as a company and realized tequila really is a great investment. It has all the same appreciation as wine and whiskey, without the wait. Tequila goes from Blanco to Reposado, to Anejo, to extra Anejo in three and a half years, and you're out. I was a bit obsessed about something that sounded too much fun to be a sound investment: a tequila tasting and investing trip to Mexico. It turns out that meeting people, visiting locations, are just a normal part of a thorough due diligence, a topic that kept coming back in the conversation. The Right Risk-Profile It's tough to get our community excited for anything under like 12%, roughly. I would say the sweet spot is like 13 to 18%. The area above 20%, people just start getting skeptical. It sounds like b******t.And then it's got to have downside protection.Stefan also added that they don't offer startup investments and avoid Equity risk for the same reason. This brought me back to the issue I expressed with YieldStreet Willow Wealth: the most toxic offering for retail investors is a high headline yield, combined with a high level of risk (such as equity tranches) hidden in the footnotes. Tequila may not be your first thought as an investment. But the market is not just real, it's now expanding beyond the spirit itself. Michael Thompson is joined by Stefan von Imhof, co-founder of Alts.co, to explore why tequila can have a faster “appreciation cycle” than wine or whisky, and why premiumisation is lifting demand for higher-quality agave products. Stefan makes the case for tequila tourism: a Mexico-based version of Napa, the Barossa, or the bourbon trail.

My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/ When people sign up for the Alts.co newsletter, they're looking to read its deep dives into alternative investments like art, baseball cards, and rare books. But the most serious investors in its audience want access to actual deal flow, and to gain that access they sign up for Altea, a high-priced membership community that actually vets potential deals and allows them to invest. Not only does Alts.co generate revenue through the annual membership, but it also charges for management fees and carried interest. In essence, Alts.co is a media company that monetizes via an investment firm. In a recent interview, co-founder Stefan von Imhof explained why his company settled on this model, how it sources deals, and why he eventually wants to stop selling sponsorships within the newsletter.
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This episode was hard for Deacon Dave. It is dedicated to his brothers Peter and Paul Imhof. Sadly for us this year they both passed on to their eternal reward. This casual conversation is a simple reminder that death will eventually run us down and when the chase is over we will breathe our last breath and be face to face with God. Please remember to have Masses said for those that have gone before you. Remember to pray for the dead. Jesus I trust in You!
Kent talks to Jaime Imhof, a dual donor double transplant recipient. In June 2022 she was rushed to the hospital raging with multiple infections and organ failure. and was given a 10% chance of survival. Jamie needed a liver transplant first to survive, breaking the six-month sobriety rule in a groundbreaking program led by Johns Hopkins Hospital. After that, she also required a kidney transplant as well due to acute kidney injury and failure from Hepatorenal Syndrome and Tacrolimus. She is 14 months post liver transplant and 7 months post kidney transplant. Stefan von Imhof is the co-founder and CEO of Alts.co, a unique blend of alternative investing media, community, and a specialized investment fund. In our conversation, we explored the distinct investment philosophy that sets Alts.co apart. From purchasing rare vinyl records and barrels of tequila to acquiring under-the-radar newsletters, Stefan's approach is anything but ordinary. He shared insights into the Alts One fund, a Reg D fund for accredited investors, emphasizing its focus on eclectic and criminally undervalued assets with a long-term view. "It's eclectic, esoteric stuff that most people in funds don't think about at all," he remarks about their investment choices. The most intriguing aspect we discussed was the company's growth strategy, particularly their method of expanding their community by acquiring other newsletters. This tactic, as Stefan notes, is "definitely under discussed," and it plays a crucial role in how Alts.co strengthens its presence in the alternative investment market. With a background in deal analysis and digital asset transactions, Stefan and his team have mastered the art of identifying valuable deals and opportunities. "We know a good deal when we see one," Stefan asserts, highlighting their proficiency in navigating the world of micro acquisitions.Listeners will find valuable takeaways in understanding the power of unconventional investment strategies and the emerging trend of micro media acquisitions. Stefan's unique perspective offers a fresh look at what it means to invest and grow a business in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape. If you're curious about alternative investments or looking for inspiration to think outside the mainstream, tune in to hear Stefan von Imhof's compelling insights and strategies for success in the world of alternative investing.
