Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
In this episode, we dive deep into the role of carbon markets in addressing the global challenge of climate change. Recorded at COP28, from Dubai, Social Impact Pioneer Sheri Hickok provides a 101 on the function of carbon markets and their evolution through carbon offsetting hiccups; whilst giving us a glimpse behind the curtain of the globe's climate conference. Sheri is the CEO of Climate Impact Partners. With over 25 years of experience in the renewable energy and now the carbon markets – she explains how companies utilise these markets to achieve their sustainability goals. The conversation demystifies the concept of carbon markets, moving beyond the simple notion of tree planting to explore comprehensive strategies like agroforestry projects in Indonesia, community engagement and additive contributions. Together we talk creating jobs, enhancing community livelihoods, improving local biodiversity, and the regulation that is being developed to ensure carbon markets don't fall into green washing. Sheri talks about the African Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI) – where African nations countries can transfer carbon credits earned from the reduction of their greenhouse gas emissions to other countries in order to meet their climate targets. By 2030 the ACMI aims to: Produce 300 million carbon credits annually; Unlock $6bn in revenue; Create 30mn jobs. Listeners are encouraged to join the conversation and contribute their perspectives. This episode is not just an informative session; it's a call to action for collective efforts in combating climate change through innovative solutions like carbon markets. As the climate crisis looms larger, this podcast episode offers valuable insights and inspires hope by showcasing effective strategies and real-world examples of progress in the fight against global warming. CORDIScovery – unearthing the hottest topics in EU science, research and innovation
From the domestic to the international, how can we anticipate, mitigate, and come to terms with violence? This episode of CORDIScovery looks at how victims of domestic violence can be better served. We ask what role violence plays in distracting communities from preparing for climate change. And we explore how the perception of historic violence plays into a culture's notion of ‘self'. Catharina Vogt's project IMPRODOVA, set out to train responders to help the victims of domestic violence more effectively. The team developed tools that are now being used across the board by the police in France, resulting in more charges being pressed than before. Halvard Buhaug, lead writer on a chapter of the IPPC's latest climate change report, ran the CLIMSEC project. He tells us that the relationship between climate change and violence might not be what we imagine. Senior lecturer in political theory at the University of Edinburgh, and the co-director of the Centre for Ethics and Critical Thought, Mihaela Mihai's research focuses on political memory, art and politics, theories of oppression and political emotions. Her GREYZONE project considered how the perception of historic violence plays into cultural identity.
Climate researchers are increasingly using the term “maladaptation” to describe adaptation measures that bring unforeseen negative consequences to local communities. From building levees that inadvertently increased flood risk in Bangladesh to a hydroelectric dam that cut off land access in Vietnam, examples of maladaptation are popping up all over the world. In the U.S., Miami has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in stormwater pumps and elevated roads to combat flooding from rising seas. And it will need to invest billions more to save the city from chronic flooding. But the UN report says those early investments might have caused unintended impacts. This week: the story of how Miami's flood investments might be leading to maladaptation – and what other cities around the world can learn from it. Guests: Alex Harris, climate change reporter for the Miami Herald; and Lisa Schipper, IPPC report author, and an environmental social science research fellow at the University of Oxford. Cecilia is the Sustainability Strategy Director at Electrolux in Sweden. Her role includes supporting the continued development of the company's sustainability strategy. She is responsible for implementing the strategy in the various Electrolux organizations, including defining ways of working and establishing relationships. Cecilia is also responsible for governance development and coordination, coordinating development of KPIs and other activities, as well as continuous improvement, assessment and development of the scope of the sustainability framework. Cecilia Joins Sustainable Nation To Discuss: Empowering customers to lead better and more sustainable lives through offering the right products Integrating a sustainability strategy to the point it becomes the strategy Electrolux's approach to circular design: closing the loop in materials, product as a service Electrolux's climate-neutral value chain goal The 50 Liter home Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Cecilia's Final Five Question Responses What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? For a younger person, I would say that an important thing is not to lock on having a career in sustainability, but really to decide what field you want to be active in. Get a good degree in the field that you're interested in and then combine it with sustainability. I think the era of sustainability generalists might be coming to an end. I think the future will need more really good experts in the different fields. We need good industrial engineers to set super energy efficient operations. We need great designers to design products for refurbishment and recycling and for this new circular society we're working in. We need financial experts to work on sustainable finance. Make that combination; that will give you a faster career and I think stronger results in your work. For a person that's sort of come a little further in their career, I think be really true to the materiality analysis that you've done in your company. Even if things are hard or seem hard to solve or will take a long time. There is no way around really focusing on what makes most sense and what is needed to be addressed from a sustainability perspective. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? After 25 years in this business, I'm really excited; it really seems to be crunch time right now. I see it in my own company. We were the geeks, trying to knock on doors and bring our message to everyone. But now everyone's talking sustainability and we're struggling to keep up with everything with all the activities that are going on and all the interest. I hear the same things from my friends working in sustainability and from other companies. I see it in the news, I hear from my neighbors, and in policymaking. Above all I see it in the financial world, which is the real game changer. Just take an example: Electrolux this year is renewing its long-term incentive program. For the first time, the top two, three hundred managers and key people within Electrolux will be incentivized based on our SBT roadmap. There will not be a full long-term incentive payout for our top management unless we fulfill our science-based targets. That will be a game changer. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? I'm reading two books in parallel. Right now we're realizing that we won't just have to change our products and tweak our business. We're going to have to rethink our whole society. There is a book by Kate Raworth called Doughnut Economics, and another book called A Finer Future by among others Hunter Lovens and Stuart Wallace and John Fullerton. They're both talking about a new economic concept: the way we value materials, the way we value work. We will have to make new economic models, we'll have to rethink our business models and how we calculate investments. We'll have to redo it all. I think these two books give me a lot of happy thoughts that actually it's going to be possible before we run out of time. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? By now you've understood that I I'm a stickler for science, so I tend to go to the sources. We have a lot of good resources in Scandinavia; Stockholm Environments Institute, Stockholm International Water Institutes, the Stockholm Resilience Center. They publish a lot of stuff that is really good and front edge thinking. I read a lot of IPPC stuff, WWF stuff and from the Potsdam Institute as well. The other is creativity and turning it into what fits your business, but you really have to stick with the science. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Electrolux? You'll just have to go to our webpage www.electroluxgroup.com/sustainability. We'll be launching a new sustainability report in just a few weeks covering the 2020 work that we've done, so look out for that. For the Better Living Program: www.betterlivingprogram.com.
The UN's expert panel on climate change, the IPCC, says methane emissions must be significantly reduced. What will it mean for farmers? Trees are proving controversial in parts of Wales. Big investment companies have been buying farms across the country for forestry, to plant trees to offset carbon emissions, but there are concerns it could damage local culture, language and heritage. And the Maryport fishing business on the west coast of Cumbria that weathered Covid and came back stronger. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
BREAKING CLIMATE NEWS: The IPCC recently published it's sixth report on the state of the climate crisis and people are freaking out about it. In this week's episode we dive into the history of the IPPC, what's actually in the report and what it means for our future.

This week’s guests: Zanita Markham, AHDB Knowledge Transfer Manager Mella Waitt, Environment Agency Alison Frogley, Environment Agency Since 2007, the Environment Agency has regulated large intensive farming installations under the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR), formerly referred to as IPPC, and today (January 2021), there are 225 pig farms permitted in England. In 2017, a new Best Available Techniques Reference Document (BREF) was released which included a series of Best Available Techniques (BAT) Conclusions. These BAT Conclusions come into force for all permitted farms on 21 February 2021. The BAT Conclusions are the techniques to prevent or, where this is not practicable, reduce emissions from pig and poultry farms. As we all prepare to move into a new socially distanced world, Carola and Rich debate how exactly the economy should be rebooted. Introducing the theme of the season, they are already dithering when deciding on the name of the theme, or is it about concepts? They cover a short history of the term “Green New Deal” and explore some of the existing tensions between different political views on what a Green New Deal should include and what it shouldn’t. In preparation for a season of dissecting various contemporary Green New Deals, they set themselves up to be the contemporary connoisseurs of the diverse flavours of GND’s. Like fine wine, some are delightful, and some just cheap and cheerful. So stay subscribed to experience the GND cellar of fine dealing. On this edition of Parallax Views, Synthetic Zero's Michael James joins the show to discuss speculative realism, post-nihilism, the problems of accelerationism, and catastrophic climate change. If you enjoy this conversation there will be a Patreon-exclusive Part II this weekend in which Michael discusses Synthetic Zero's interest in the theory of patchworks, which they are attempting to bring into real-world practice via an experiment akin to the 60s counterculture's communes and shared-living spaces. Synthetic Zero is a "multimedia research and design collective seeking adaptive responses to the various crises and unequally distributed realities of contemporary life." Michael and I begin by discussing the origins of Synthetic Zero and how it was envisioned by Michael, alongside Aaron Crawford, as a para-academic unit born out of philosophical explorations that arose from the speculative realist movement spearheaded by figures like Graham Harman, Timothy Morton, Quentin Meillassoux, and others. We discuss what speculative realism and object-oriented ontology are and their relation to Meillassoux's ideas about finitude. Michael outlines how speculative realism attempted to deal with philosophical conundrums around our perception of reality and reality itself. From there we delve into the topic of nihilism. We give particular mention to the works of philosopher Ray Brassier during this portion of the discussion and Michael goes over some of the basic ideas found in Brassier's Nihil Unbound. From there we delve into Michael's essay "From the Ruins" which deals with Synthetic Zero's interest in the concept of "Post-Nihilism". Michael argues vis-à-vis the philosopher Gianni Vattimo that an emancipatory potential exists within nihilism. Is it possible to find meaning in simply being human rather than searching for meaning in a transcendental narrative like those provided by religion? Is it possible to reach beyond the language games of philosophy and the grips of ideology? Are there new ways of thinking beyond the registers of postmodernism? Can we bridge the gap between theory and praxis? These are just some of the issues we cover during this portion of the conversation. Nick Land From there we delve into Michael's interest in, and harsh critiques of accelerationism. Accelerationism has been a topic we've covered in previous episodes, and has proven a popular topic. Michael has had many interactions with accelerationist thinkers and has become highly critical of them, including the infamous "Shanghai Sith" Nick Land and the meme-loving denizens of U/Acc "Cave Twitter" who advocate for accelerating capitalism to it's endpoint regardless of it's outcome. Michael takes strong issue with these views especially in light of collapse scenarios like climate catastrophe looming in the horizon. We begin wrapping up Part I of the conversation with Michael by delving into the topic of climate catastrophe in light of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report on the topic. Additionally, Michael discusses his background in anthropology, including his research into the Tahltan Nation, and how it relates to his work. We discuss what connects these matters and what the 12 year period the IPPC report gives for dealing with climate change means for the future of humanity.
