Len and Beave discuss the work of Nick Hornby in rhyme and riddle, like two true literary dudes. From "High Fidelity" to "About A Boy" to "Fever Pitch" to his latest work, "Just Like You", we break down his work, his love of pop culture, and his fixation on men stuck in ruts. Len implores Beave to stop bringing up the Welsh on every podcast. Len works his staff nearly to death in order to read all of Hornby's work. Tune in for LITERARY EXCELLENCE.
It's here. It's now. This week we discuss a film that proves rom-coms can still work with Juliet, Naked. You just have to make them a little indie! We also get dark again with an early Ryan Gosling role in The Believer, but don't worry, Baby Goose never disappoints. Plus, we talk about the ridiculous uniforms they made women wear in the Women's Baseball League in the perfect movie, A League of Their Own. Ah, we didn't even talk about how stupid it was that they made them go to charm school in order to play! Oh, well. Grab your batting helmet because batter up! Hear that call! To celebrate the return of our sister podcast The Ripped Ticket Review, join Jack Smit in a trip to the archives with a series of classic radio shows retooled and re-geared for TSAF listeners. This episode, reviews of Juliet Naked and Widows.
Juliet, Naked is a novel by the British author Nick Hornby published in 2009. It tells the story of Annie, the long-suffering girlfriend of obsessed music fan Duncan, and the object of his obsession, singer-songwriter Tucker Crowe. The plot revolves around the release of Juliet, Naked, the first new Tucker Crowe release in over two decades.Juliet, Naked is a 2018 romantic comedy film directed by Jesse Peretz based on Nick Hornby's novel of the same name. It centers on the story of Annie (Rose Byrne), and her unlikely romance with singer-songwriter Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke), who is also the subject of her boyfriend's (Chris O'Dowd) long-time music obsession. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2018.Please note a trigger warning for this episode, we discuss abortions as part of the review. http://ex-press.com/2018/08/31/juliet-naked-strips-romance-down-to-nagging-self-doubt/?fbclid=IwAR0sZh_DYuF3keCfgN7jR7g3r552TJc0sHL5-4Yll8IZbEIQeRW5YOs_3R4

This week, we're joined once again by our first ever guest, Harper's dad, Warren! And we're so lucky to be joined by a Nick Hornby superfan since we're talking about the 2018 film, Juliet Naked. Ethan Hawke plays a Gen X rockstar who stopped making music in the 90s and Rose Byrne plays the girlfriend of his biggest fan. It's a real hoot and we had a great time talking about this rom-com!
Despite generally being a Nick Hornby fan, I resisted reading Juliet, Naked for a while because of the title. When I finally read it, I remember being glad that it wasn’t actually about a naked woman. I remember liking it but I’m fairly certain I was in a different decade of my life then. After watching the film version, I find I’m curious to re-read the book – to find out if it’s as problematic as I found the movie. I was going to say “sexist” instead of “problematic” but I’m not sure if the movie is as sexist as the world is. It just highlights some of the ways the world is sexist and it’s problematic for me because it’s also a bit seductive. Revisiting my (surprisingly) long career, with thoughts on art, audience, and "making it." Oh, and being multi-genre. Also dishing on Big Little Lies and Juliet, Naked. The quote I reference is: "When one's young one doesn't feel a part of it yet, the human condition; one does things because they are not for good; everything is a rehearsal. To be repeated ad lib, to be put right when the curtain goes up in earnest. One day you know that the curtain was up all the time. That was the performance." ~Sybille Bedford, from Walking on Alligators: a Book of Meditations for Writers, by Susan ShaughnessySupport the show (http://paypal.me/jeffekennedy)

Ignoring the fact that our episode title sounds like a weird wrestling match that some people would pay a lot of money to watch, We have a rather heated discussion about Captain Marvel (well Shaun gets heated anyway), the 21st movie in the MCU. As every other movie runs scared from it, we only put it up against Juliet, Naked, which Sharon managed to catch on a home entertainment service that (Shock! Horror!!) wasn't Netflix.EnjoySupport Netflix vs Cinema by donating to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/netflixvscinemaFind out more at https://netflixvscinema.pinecast.coThis podcast is powered by Pinecast.

The evolution of the Rambo Trilogy is discussed as well as appreciation for Terry Gilliam and the new 4K edition of Superman. From their appreciation of the awfulness of Maximum Overdrive to the respect of The Day of the Jackal, the duo also get into other films of the 70s and the chicken-and-the-egg factor that drives Hollywood to make films for adults. Oder die Best-of-Coen-Brüder-Show "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". May the Devil Take You" raus.

We are back this week with only a few things to talk about... but hang on for our picks of scary movies just in time for Halloween! We start off discussing the new standup special from Adam Sandler called 100% Fresh. We gush a little too much about this special as we both loved it so much. Next, Dhani talks about a small movie called Juliet, Naked starring Ethan Hawke, Chris O'Dowd, and Rose Byrne. She enjoyed the story but knows that these types of movies aren't for most people. Then we both revisit Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again because John has been able to watch it now. Since Dhani was so crazy about this movie, she was disappointed that John didn't fall in love so quickly... though he tries to convince her that he did enjoy it. Moving on to TV, Dhani only chose to discuss the BBC and Netflix series Bodyguard. She talks about the twists and turns in unfolding the story. Finally, we decide not to do our usual Actors' Corner this week and instead use the same format to discuss our favorite scary movies. These are the films WE love, like, hate, or haven't seen and not necessarily the scariest or best movies. And since John actually doesn't enjoy horror films, this could get interesting. Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (1:90) Dhani ★★★★★ John ★★★★★ Juliet, Naked (12:08) ★★★1/2 Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (19:10) Dhani ★★★★3/4 John ★★★★ Bodyguard (23:40) Scary Movies (31:19)

Josh is joined by recurring guest Hannah Couture to discuss two indie movies that are holding us over until Oscar season, Andrew Bujalski's Support the Girls (Beginning-33:56) and Juliet, Naked (33:57-End).
It's another edition of Midday at the Movies, our monthly look at trends in the film industry, and some the new movies lighting up local screens. We're joined again by our regular movie-mavens: the Maryland Film Festival's founding director, Jed Dietz, is with Tom in the studio. And Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday joins them on the line from Toronto, Canada, where she is reporting on the 2018 Toronto Film Festival. The conversation today picks up on a theme Ann explores in a recent Washington post column, in which she identifies 23 of the best films released since 2000. She notes that the industry's so-called ----Canon---- -- the widely accepted list of the greatest films of all time -- consists largely of older, classic films like Orson Welles' Citizen Kane or Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, reflecting pinnacles of the movie-making craft through the 20th Century, but not much beyond. A host of groundbreaking films made since 2000, Ann suggests, should be considered worthy of the same consideration. See if you agree. And among the films spotlighted this month -- including the ongoing festival of Stanley Kubrick's complete works at the Parkway -- Ann and Jed cite two recent favorites: director Jeremiah Zagar's We the Animals, an affecting story of three young brothers growing up buffeted by their loving but emotionally volatile parents; and director Jesse Peretz's touching comedy, Juliet Naked, based on the novel by Nick Hornby, in which a woman stuck in a long-term relationship with an obsessive fan of obscure American alt-rocker Tucker Crowe, winds up meeting -- and falling in love with -- the elusive rocker himself.

"Juliet, Naked", "What Keeps You Alive", "The Little Stranger": A New Release Episode. Join Jess and Andrew for another trip to the Cineplex. This week, Jess was stuck in the books, so Andrew ended up seeing a couple of these alone. This doesn't mean Jess isn't a part of the conversation, though. Like with Solo, Andrew explains "Juliet, Naked" to Jess, as she has an opinion on the type of film "Juliet" turned into, and the trend in film that is similar to it. Andrew also saw the new IFC Midnight movie solo at the Arena Cinelounge. This was the best of the three films, and it's a real shame Jess didn't get a chance to see it. Can't wait for it to come to VOD so she can experience it too. Jess's film of the weekend was "The Little Stranger". Judging by the attendance in our screening, we were some of the very few who saw this film. The audience may have been smarter than us for avoiding it. Your three favorite millennials are joined by guest Krystala Skordalos to talk about the revival of a genre once thought to be dead: the rom-com. Plus: Krystala is helping out with a celebrity live-reading of The Goonies, Anya takes a bloody trip down memory lane with True Blood, Willoughby is watching Buzzfeed Unsolved, and HT caps off Asian August with Searching.

On this edition of the Cinema Clash: THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS is a disgrace to both humans and puppets; PAPILLION revisits the true story of a classic prison break; THE WIFE generates early Oscar buzz for veteran actress Glenn Close; JULIET, NAKED charms as a “slight but sweet” romantic drama; SKATE KITCHEN ‘shreds’ light on the world of teenage girl skateboarders in NYC; and SUPPORT THE GIRLS features a talented ensemble cast in a so-so dramedy about scantily-clad waitresses at a Hooters-style “family” restaurant called Double Whammies.
We go long and strong this week, with a show filled with tangents, manifestation, and a whole lot of Pepsi-takin’. Movie reviews include Spike Lee’s ‘BlacKkKlansman’ (John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, Topher Grace), and the latest Nick Hornby adaptation, ‘Juliet, Naked’ (Rose Byrne, Chris O’Dowd, Ethan Hawke). We pitch a new subscription based, virtual experience, enlist Carly Rae Jepsen’s help in saving the world, and read some of your lovely emails. Gattaca! Gattaca! Gattaca!
The big smash of the weekend was "Crazy Rich Asians," the adaptation of Kevin Kwan's best seller, and one of us likes it a lot more than the other. But boy, "Mile 22," that's quite a dumb little movie. Then Grierson schools Leitch on "Juliet, Naked." Then, in our Reboot section, we go BACK in time to discuss 1985's "Back to the Future." 1.21 Gigawatts! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
