This week, our Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix re-read begins! We examine the protections surrounding Harry now that Voldemort is back, and ask whether Dudley Dursley is a good boy now. News: There is an open casting call for children to become the next Potter trio for the HBO series. We'll be talking more about it in Bonus MuggleCast, available on Apple Podcasts and our Patreon. Chapter-by-Chapter begins again with Book 5, and our brand new MuggleCast Time Turner segment has us spinning some old recordings from past discussions. This week, Episode 433 and Episode 228. Harry's mood has soured significantly! Were we repelled by the book's immediately sadder protagonist? How much of Harry's rage is justified? How much is due to his horcrux connection? Could Harry have been removed from Privet Drive after just 24 hours? If so, why wasn't he? Is Dumbledore to blame for all of harry's problems? Feeling disconnected, Harry hears a loud noise but it makes him feel more desperate. The noise was the sound of our breaking hearts. Dudley's attempts to de-escalate the situation with Harry are applaudable, but unsuccessful. Has Dudley already grown most of the way to a mature person? Are we laughing at Harry's jokes? Lynx Line question: how could Dumbledore improve Harry's protection? New segments: Where's Dumbledore?! And Make the Personal Connection This week's MVP award category is: Most Fake Character Quizzitch: In honor of the drought that's happening in the beginning of Book 5, what is the hottest temperature ever recorded in the United Kingdom? Guesses within 3 degrees Fahrenheit will be accepted. You may answer in Fahrenheit or Celsius. Your quest begins! And what are you looking for? A MacGuffin! It's one of the most prevalent plot devices in movies. Where did it begin? Where did the name come from? How is it used? ...wait, I just made another 3 MacGuffins...Join Jay and Shua as they dig deep into some of the most famous MacGuffins in history on Enjoy Stuff! You've got to find the secret object before the other characters do! It's important! News There's a new Weird Al single - Polkamania RIP Bob Newhart Alien popcorn bucket and Deadpool and Wolverine popcorn bucket A Beetlejuice Beetlejuice full trailer has been released The Rings of Power Season 2 is almost here Kevin Smith Reveals Jay & Silent Bob 3 Title and Story Princess Leia's gold bikini sold for big bucks Be sure to check out lots of news from San Diego Comic Con on Superhero Suite plus a review of Deadpool and Wolverine Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay took a trip to the other side of the world to Tuscany, Italy. It was a relaxing (yet very hot) trip to the old country to enjoy a little relaxing environment. Shua traveled to Anaheim, California and enjoyed Pixar Fest at Disneyland. They both had great vacations but are happy to be home. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays we talk about 3 different sci-fi movies that Jay has analyzed. Idiocracy makes some bold (and sometimes accurate) predictions of the future of our country. The Prestige was a bizarre tale of two competing magicians and a Tesla machine. And Children of Men presented a scary dystopia where there are no new babies in the world and how that is really going to screw us up. Educate yourself and check out all of Jay's articles on Sci-Fi Saturdays, only on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Deadpool 1 and 2 in preparation for the new movie. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy MacGuffins! You've probably heard of a MacGuffin, but do you actually know what it is? MacGuffins themselves have been around about as long as stories, but the term originated in the 1920s and was made popular by the master, Alfred Hitchcock himself. While Hitchcock believed that the MacGuffin isn't important to anyone but the characters in the story, George Lucas believes that it can be a very strong emotional connection to the people enjoying the story. Which MacGuffin philosophy is stronger to you? What's your favorite MacGuffin? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Your mission, if you choose to accept it…” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. More people in Ireland consume their news online than through any other medium, including television. This is the first time that news online has become more popular than television news in Ireland, according to the annual Digital News Report Ireland. The report, to be published by Coimisiún na Meán, also reveals that the number of Irish news consumers who paid to access news content increased in 2024. This was especially true for 18-24-year-olds, where an increase of seven percentage points, up to 26% from 19%, in people paying for digital news content was recorded. The study also found that there is evidence of real concern about what is real/what is fake online, with the number of people expressing concern up seven percentage points since 2023 (now at 71%). Commenting, Media Development Commissioner for Coimisiún na Meán, Rónán Ó Domhnaill, said: "It is encouraging to see that overall trust in news remains high in Ireland compared to other international regions, this year 46% of respondents reported that they can trust most news most of the time. The continuing trend toward news consumption online presents both opportunities and challenges for the media in Ireland. This year's Digital News Report Ireland serves as a valuable dataset to help ensure that the transition to news online is implemented in a structured and successful manner." "Coimisiún na Meán's support for journalism in Ireland continues. We recently concluded a public consultation on two new journalism schemes supporting high-quality coverage, in both Irish and English, of local authorities and Circuit and District Court hearings. These schemes, and an ancillary funding measure, are due to commence this summer, financed by a fund of €6 million allocated from the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media, Catherine Martin TD." Research for the Digital News Report is undertaken by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford and is the largest ongoing comparative study of news consumption in the world. The Irish data forms part of the larger survey, which this year is conducted in 47 markets. Ireland's participation has been facilitated this year by Coimisiún na Meán, Ireland's commission for regulating broadcasters, on-demand services and online media and supporting media development. Analysis of the Irish data is provided by researchers from the DCU Institute for Future Media, Democracy and Society (FuJo). Key findings from this year's report include: Interest in News: Irish consumers retain their interest in news. Some 88% of respondents were either 'extremely', 'very' or 'somewhat' interested in news. This is higher than in the UK (82%), the US (84%), or when measured against the European average (85%). However, if only the two categories of 'extremely' or 'very' interested in news, are selected, then there is a significant difference between those who are aged 18-24, who register at 30% and those who are 65+, who register at 73%. There are also major differences between the genders, with men registering 61% (extremely' or 'very' interested in news), and women 46% (extremely' or 'very' interested in news). Trust in News: Trust in news is down slightly overall, but selected outlets have seen a rise in their percentage points. At the top of this ranking, RTÉ (+1pp) and The Irish Times (+2pp) remain the most trusted outlets. Source of News: For the first time 'online, excluding social media' (33%) has overtaken TV viewing (31%) as 'the main source of news'. Paying for News: There has been an increase of two percentage points (from 15% to 17%) among Irish news consumers who have paid to access news content in 2024. News subscriber numbers are behind the US, but ahead of the UK and European average. There has been a significant increase of seven percentage points in the number of people aged 18-24 paying for digital news content. Artificial Intelligence: 44% of respondents say they have read or heard a 'la...

Rapid Rundown - Series 7 Episode 3 All the key news since our episode on 6th November - including new research on AI in education, and a big tech news week! It's okay to write research papers with Generative AI - but not to review them! The publishing arm of American Association for Advancement of Science (they publish 6 science journals, including the "Science" journal) says authors can use “AI-assisted technologies as components of their research study or as aids in the writing or presentation of the manuscript” as long as their use is noted. But they've banned AI-generated images and other multimedia" without explicit permission from the editors”. And they won't allow the use of AI by reviewers because this “could breach the confidentiality of the manuscript”. A number of other publishers have made announcements recently, including the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors , the World Association of Medical Editors and the Council of Science Editors. https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/change-policy-use-generative-ai-and-large-language-models Learning From Mistakes Makes LLM Better Reasoner https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.20689 News Article: https://venturebeat.com/ai/microsoft-unveils-lema-a-revolutionary-ai-learning-method-mirroring-human-problem-solving Researchers from Microsoft Research Asia, Peking University, and Xi'an Jiaotong University have developed a new technique to improve large language models' (LLMs) ability to solve math problems by having them learn from their mistakes, akin to how humans learn. The researchers have revealed a pioneering strategy, Learning from Mistakes (LeMa), which trains AI to correct its own mistakes, leading to enhanced reasoning abilities, according to a research paper published this week. The researchers first had models like LLaMA-2 generate flawed reasoning paths for math word problems. GPT-4 then identified errors in the reasoning, explained them and provided corrected reasoning paths. The researchers used the corrected data to further train the original models. Role of AI chatbots in education: systematic literature review International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education https://educationaltechnologyjournal.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s41239-023-00426-1#Sec8 Looks at chatbots from the perspective of students and educators, and the benefits and concerns raised in the 67 research papers they studied We found that students primarily gain from AI-powered chatbots in three key areas: homework and study assistance, a personalized learning experience, and the development of various skills. For educators, the main advantages are the time-saving assistance and improved pedagogy. However, our research also emphasizes significant challenges and critical factors that educators need to handle diligently. These include concerns related to AI applications such as reliability, accuracy, and ethical considerations." Also, a fantastic list of references for papers discussing chatbots in education, many from this year More Robots are Coming: Large Multimodal Models (ChatGPT) can Solve Visually Diverse Images of Parsons Problems https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.04926 https://arxiv.org/pdf/2311.04926.pdf Parsons problems are a type of programming puzzle where learners are given jumbled code snippets and must arrange them in the correct logical sequence rather than producing the code from scratch "While some scholars have advocated for the integration of visual problems as a safeguard against the capabilities of language models, new multimodal language models now have vision and language capabilities that may allow them to analyze and solve visual problems. … Our results show that GPT-4V solved 96.7% of these visual problems" The research's findings have significant implications for computing education. The high success rate of GPT-4V in solving visually diverse Parsons Problems suggests that relying solely on visual complexity in coding assignments might not effectively challenge students or assess their true understanding in the era of advanced AI tools. This raises questions about the effectiveness of traditional assessment methods in programming education and the need for innovative approaches that can more accurately evaluate a student's coding skills and understanding. Interesting to note some research earlier in the year found that LLMs could only solve half the problems - so things have moved very fast! The Impact of Large Language Models on Scientific Discovery: a Preliminary Study using GPT-4 https://arxiv.org/pdf/2311.07361.pdf By Microsoft Research and Microsoft Azure Quantum researchers "Our preliminary exploration indicates that GPT-4 exhibits promising potential for a variety of scientific applications, demonstrating its aptitude for handling complex problem-solving and knowledge integration tasks" The study explores the impact of GPT-4 in advancing scientific discovery across various domains. It investigates its use in drug discovery, biology, computational chemistry, materials design, and solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). The study primarily uses qualitative assessments and some quantitative measures to evaluate GPT-4's understanding of complex scientific concepts and problem-solving abilities. While GPT-4 shows remarkable potential and understanding in these areas, particularly in drug discovery and biology, it faces limitations in precise calculations and processing complex data formats. The research underscores GPT-4's strengths in integrating knowledge, predicting properties, and aiding interdisciplinary research. An Interdisciplinary Outlook on Large Language Models for Scientific Research https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.04929 Overall, the paper presents LLMs as powerful tools that can significantly enhance scientific research. They offer the promise of faster, more efficient research processes, but this comes with the responsibility to use them well and critically, ensuring the integrity and ethical standards of scientific inquiry. It discusses how they are being used effectively in eight areas of science, and deals with issues like hallucinations - but, as it points out, even in Engineering where there's low tolerance for mistakes, GPT-4 can pass critical exams. This research is a good source of focus for researchers thinking about how it may help or change their research areas, and help with scientific communication and collaboration. With ChatGPT, do we have to rewrite our learning objectives -- CASE study in Cybersecurity https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.06261 This paper examines how AI tools like ChatGPT can change the way cybersecurity is taught in universities. It uses a method called "Understanding by Design" to look at learning objectives in cybersecurity courses. The study suggests that ChatGPT can help students achieve these objectives more quickly and understand complex concepts better. However, it also raises questions about how much students should rely on AI tools. The paper argues that while AI can assist in learning, it's crucial for students to understand fundamental concepts from the ground up. The study provides examples of how ChatGPT could be integrated into a cybersecurity curriculum, proposing a balance between traditional learning and AI-assisted education. "We hypothesize that ChatGPT will allow us to accelerate some of our existing LOs, given the tool's capabilities… From this exercise, we have learned two things in particular that we believe we will need to be further examined by all educators. First, our experiences with ChatGPT suggest that the tool can provide a powerful means to allow learners to generate pieces of their work quickly…. Second, we will need to consider how to teach concepts that need to be experienced from “first-principle” learning approaches and learn how to motivate students to perform some rudimentary exercises that “the tool” can easily do for me." A Step Closer to Comprehensive Answers: Constrained Multi-Stage Question Decomposition with Large Language Models https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.07491 What this means is that AI is continuing to get better, and people are finding ways to make it even better, at passing exams and multi-choice questions Assessing Logical Puzzle Solving in Large Language Models: Insights from a Minesweeper Case Study https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.07387 Good news for me though - I still have a skill that can't be replaced by a robot. It seems that AI might be great at playing Go, and Chess, and seemingly everything else. BUT it turns out it can't play Minesweeper as well as a person. So my leisure time is safe! DEMASQ: Unmasking the ChatGPT Wordsmith https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.05019 Finally, I'll mention this research, where the researchers have proposed a new method of ChatGPT detection, where they're assessing the 'energy' of the writing. It might be a step forward, but tbh it took me a while to find the thing I'm always looking for with detectors, which is the False Positive rate - ie how many students in a class of 100 will it accuse of writing something with ChatGPT when they actually wrote it themself. And the answer is it has a 4% false positive rate on research abstracts published on ArXiv - but apparently it's 100% accurate on Reddit. Not sure that's really good enough for education use, where students are more likely to be using academic style than Reddit style! I'll leave you to read the research if you want to know more, and learn about the battle between AI writers and AI detectors Harvard's AI Pedagogy Project And outside of research, it's worth taking a look at work from the metaLAB at Harvard called "Creative and critical engagement with AI in education" It's a collection of assignments and materials inspired by the humanities, for educators curious about how AI affects their students and their syllabi. It includes an AI starter, an LLM tutorial, lots of resources, and a set of assignments https://aipedagogy.org/ Microsoft Ignite Book of News There's way too much to fit into the shownotes, so just head straight to the Book of News for all the huge AI announcements from Microsoft's big developer conference Link: Microsoft Ignite 2023 Book of News

We are talking today about the conch shell and how God used one on the beach in my early recovery to help me learn how to tune into His Voice. I think there are many women, especially Millennials and younger who want to know how to connect to God but don't want to do it in the religion or ways they were shown growing up. They want something personal. I believe, they want a relationship and to do that, you need to learn how to tune into God's voice. So this week I'm going to share about how God started to do that with this conch shell and I'm praying, that some of you use this podcast to seek that deeper relationship with the Lord. Tani and Auk Love talking shop: tech, experiences, life, travel, trails, technique, gear, philosophies, culture, humor and more. In this edition of The Path Podcast Auk leads off with homework he has assigned himself to understand the forces that lead to CushCore feeling more supple even at the same pressure. Tani and Auk agree that it is not good to use Gorilla tape as rim tape, then talk about how to pick the best width when selecting rim tape. Tani was lucky to ride “hero dirt” after the rain, which inspired a bit more confidence, a big bang and a harsh moment with Tani's Flight Attendant. What is good dirt and how to time it after rain? The fellas talk about the philosophy of a middle way between riding too cautiously vs too recklessly. Tani compares his e bike experience to a spin class he took. He thinks there are similarities. They bounce ideas around about feedback and incentives. News: There is an open job position for a full time content creator, and the bike shortage is over. Scéim i nGaillimh le bruscar cupáin caifé a laghdú. News There's a taste of what is being said but for the next 3 months the blog blog which will be on sale in 10 coffee shops in Galway city under a scheme launched today will have a "green" taste. Nuacht Bíonn blas ar an mbeagán a deirtear ach as seo go ceann 3 mhí beidh blas "glas" ar an mblogam caifé a bheas ar díol i 10 shiopa caifé i gcathair na Gaillimhe faoi scéim a seoladh inniu. The cafes in the "Use Your Mug" scheme will not offer drinks in disposable cups. Ní bheidh fáil sna caiféanna sa scéim "Usáid do Mhuga" ar dheochanna i gcupáin aon-uaire. In return, stores will receive 1,400 free cups from Galway City Council and 2GoCup. Mar chúiteamh air sin gheobhaidh na siopaí 1,400 cupán in aisce ó Chomhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe agus 2GoCup. Customers will pay € 1 to borrow the cup of the deposit scheme and the money will be refunded when it is returned or exchanged for another 2GoCup cup free of charge by any of the 10 participating businesses. Íocfaidh custaiméirí €1 le cupán na scéime taisce a fháil ar iasacht agus aisíocfar an t-airgead nuair a thabharfar ar ais é nó nuair a mhalartófar é le cupán eile 2GoCup in aisce ag aon cheann de na 10 ngnólacht atá rannpháirteach sa scéim. The scheme was devised by Galway City Council and 2GoCup to significantly reduce the number of disposable coffee cups used in the city. Is iad Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe agus 2GoCup a cheap an scéim le laghdú suntasach a dhéanamh ar líon na gcupáin caifé aon- uaire a úsáidtear sa gcathair. It is the first such scheme by a local authority in the country and the City Council hopes that other authorities will emulate the example of Galway. Is í an chéad scéim dá leithéid ag údarás áitiúil sa tír agus tá súil ag Comhairle na Cathrach go ndéanfaidh údaráis eile aithris ar shampla na Gaillimhe. "We dispose of 200 million cups of coffee in the Republic of Ireland every year - the equivalent of 560,000 every day that goes to landfill or incineration. "Déanann muid 200 milliún cupán caife a dhiúscairt i bPoblacht na hÉireann gach bliain - is ionann é sin agus 560,000 gach lá a théann chuig líonadh talún nó a dhéantar a loscadh. This has huge environmental impacts in terms of litter, waste and climate, "said Lord McCusker, the Council's Environmental Awareness Officer. Tá iarmhairtí ollmhóra comhshaoil ag baint leis sin ó thaobh bruscair, dramhaíola agus aeráide de" a dúirt Tiarnan McCusker, Oifigeach Feasachta Comhshaoil leis an gComhairle. A recent Council survey shows that four out of five respondents have a standing cup but only one in five use them regularly. Léiríonn suirbhé a rinne an Chomhairle le déanaí go bhfuil buan- chupán ag ceathrar as gach cúigear freagróirí ach nach n-úsáideann ach duine amháin as gach cúigear iad go rialta. Minister of State Ossian Smyth, who is responsible for the circular economy, and who launched the campaign in Galway today, said he believes the public is interested in embracing change and using permanent cups. Dúirt an tAire Stáit Ossian Smyth atá freagrach as an ngeilleagar ciorclach, agus a sheol an feachtas i nGaillimh inniu, go gcreideann sé go bhfuil suim ag an phobal tabhairt faoin athrú agus buan-chupáin a úsáid. Also, people want cheaper coffee - it's more expensive to get coffee in a disposable cup. " Chomh maith leis sin ba mhaith le daoine caifé níos saoire a fháil – tá sé níos costasaí caifé a fháil i gcupán aonuaire." In addition to the 10 cafes that will be renting permanent cups, many more in the city have signed up to the 'Use Your Mug!' They will offer a 50 cent discount to customers who bring in their own standing cups for the next week. Chomh maith leis an 10 gcaifé a bheidh ag ligean buan-chupáin ar cíos,

Bob Chapek also made the comment that instead od a “new passholder program,” they will have a loyalty/affinity program instead. – https://www.micechat.com/291137-disneyland-update-part-2-new-adventures-arriving-soon/ Last week, Walt Disney World ended its mask requirement for vaccinated guests in outdoor areas of the parks in Florida. Masks are still required indoors, and while on all attractions. This is probably a sign of things to come for Disneyland, and an important piece of information to know. The mask mandate, along with the blueprint for reopening will expire in California on Jule 15th, and Disneyland is expected to change it’s mask policy to the one in Disney World. Keep this in mind when booking your trips to the Happiest Place on Earth if this makes you uncomfortable, or you have young ones who cannot be vaccinated yet. – https://www.micechat.com/291137-disneyland-update-part-2-new-adventures-arriving-soon/ There are quite a few of you out there who will be endlessly excited about this news. Some of the screens are being used to show PhotoPass photos from nearby attractions. The photos can then be linked to your Disneyland App and purchased. – https://www.micechat.com/290819-disneyland-update-less-is-more-more-or-less/ As part of the DisneylandForward expansion plan, Disneyland has teased an Indiana Jones themed bar. During a recent webinar, Disneyland proposed that one of the establishments that could come with the expansion would be Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, which is already in Disney Springs in Florida. It seems that the closure of the parks has lead to deterioration of some of the buildings on the lagoon that house some of the projection equipment. The old buildings have been dismantled and are being rebuilt, exposing the rusted interior. No word on when World of Color will be returning, but it needs some TLC before then. – https://www.micechat.com/291137-disneyland-update-part-2-new-adventures-arriving-soon/ Next time you are using one of the outdoor portable sinks that have been setup, take a look at the theming. Would you ever consider investing with someone who has never lost money on a deal? That would certainly get my attention. I can’t make that claim - I’ve lost money on a few. But today I’m going to have on the show a young man who so far is batting 1000. He’s never lost money on a deal. And he’s been at it for awhile. They are on track to have $100M under management within the next 12 months. I’ve never had someone do this on the show either, but Blake is going to tell us how the wisdom of King Solomon is a model upon which to build a Financial Fortress We are also going to discuss his 3 Dimensional Investment strategy, talk about what that means and how we can use it. Mystery: Home sales volume drops, but prices remain steady? Brilliant: many homeowners who lose their jobs and incomes will struggle to hold onto their homes You cannot declare a housing “trend” with data from any one-month period. This has never been more true than during the sudden economic upheaval created by the coronavirus and worldwide lockdown. We should probably set aside our normal macro-economic models for awhile and just see what happens when things open back up. Unprecedented events like this create difficulty for prognosticators. So the experts tend to draw on what they know, or from prior events they see as somehow similar or analogous to the current situation. I’m choosing to focus not on cyclical schedules, or stats produced one month after a worldwide shutdown. Instead, I focus on market fundamentals. Interest rates, Avg. days on market, foreclosure and default rates, available inventory, new home starts, and the economy as a whole. The last two are challenged right now. But our calls to investors and realtors on the streets and in the trenches say the market remains strong. News: There is nothing that 2020 hasn’t touched at the resort so far, and the popular Halloween party “Oogie Boogie Bash” has been cancelled by Disney this week. We had hoped that the party would still be on this year, but with no direction from the state of California, there just isn’t enough time to plan, prep, and put on the party this year. No word yet on what, if any, Christmas decorations will be around the resort this year. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/07/oogie-boogie-bash-cancelled-at-disney-california-adventure-due-to-covid-19-pandemic-concerns/ and https://www.micechat.com/265236-canceled-oogie-boogie-bash-halloween-event-at-disneyland-resort/ and https://www.ocregister.com/2020/07/24/disneyland-cancels-oogie-boogie-bash-due-to-coronavirus/ Oogie Boogie’s Bash may be cancelled, but that doesn’t mean that there is no Halloween merchandise to buy! Neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, and face coverings containing valves, mesh material or holes of any kind are not acceptable face coverings. This has been updated since our story about it last week. Guests may remove their face covering while actively eating or drinking outside, but must remain stationary and maintaining appropriate physical distancing from others. These policies were updated to close some loopholes that guests were finding in the policy to bypass the requirement. – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/experience-updates/downtown-disney/ and https://www.ocregister.com/2020/07/23/disneyland-tightens-covid-19-mask-requirements-at-downtown-disney/ Two popular restaurants have reopened in Downtown Disney this week. Ballast Point and Tortilla Jo’s are now serving to-go food for outdoor eating, as it still is a mandate to not allow indoor dining. Tortilla Jo’s has a limited outdoor seating area to the right of their building and Ballast Point has an upstairs outdoor patio. Both restaurants require reservations. – https://www.micechat.com/265136-downtown-disney-updates-loophole-closed-more-restaurants-reopen/ As we spoke about on our public live stream this weekend, some Star Wars seasonal festivals might be coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The infomation on these events are from the new Star Wars book from Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Imagineering. In the “Traveler’s Guide to Batuu” they lay out the three festivals that take place in the Spring, Fall, and Winter. Black Spire Day is celebrated on May the 4th and commemorates the founding of the outpost. The Batuuan Harvest Festival is celebrated in the Fall and honors golden lichen, or “gold dust” which will be used in special drinks and dishes. Finally, Life Day, which debuted with the Star Wars Holiday Special, locals will celebrate peace, harmony, and freedom. Now Playing - We keep it brief, as Dylan talks about his love for Pikachu and Ness in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, while Ryan dives into Crypt of the Necrodancer. News - There is so much news. We start off with what we hope will be the death of a favorite topic, loot boxes. From there, we go though the ups and downs of streaming giant Ninja and his transition from Twitch to Mixer, and some of the fallout that has come from that agreement. And then, following an amazing episode of Patriot Act, Dylan and Ryan dive into so many different topics they have discussed over the past few years, such as labor practices, sexism at Riot Games, and how much money is going into the industry. Dylan delivers a passionate call to arms to stop supporting bad actors within development, and focus your energy on the games that treat developers as people. Finally, the Epic Games Store VS Steam debate continues to churn, with disgusting behavior hurled towards indie developer Glumberland, makers of the upcoming sure-to-be-indie-darling Ooblets. Don't send death threats folks. Competitive Corner - EVO was held last weekend, and Dylan and Ryan are in complete awe by the energy and passion of the Fighting Game Community. Sign up at PodcastGuests.com/sop Podcast SEO with Transcripts Many people feel that if they put a transcript of your show as your blog you have found the easy way to create "show notes." This is often spurred on by a John Mueller (John Mueller - Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst - Google ) stating, "So having some kind of textual information on that page helps us as well, so that we can actually rank that page appropriately. Then when someone brought up transcripts he said, "If you have a transcription of the podcast, that’s even better, because then all of that information is available for us to actually index." Source. An article on Seach Engine People's website stated that "After transcribing all their audio content, the radio show This American Life (TAL) found that 6.68% of search traffic is attributable to transcripts" So who do they do this? Each transcript is published on a separate web page that is linked to the main episode page (see example). Read full report Two more studies found that pages that added transcripts earned on average 16% more revenue than those without; meanwhile, Youtube videos that added captions gained 7.32% more views overall. If transcripts are hard to read, then this can increase your bounce rate. A bounce rate is when someone comes to one page on your site and then leaves. Google can see this and (it was thought) to hurt your Google Rankings. However, in an article from Search Engine Journal from Gillam Hunter, it stated, "Don’t worry, despite the “professional opinion” of many SEO cowboys, bounce rate isn’t part of Google’s algorithm. No, having a low bounce rate won’t give you “ranking benefits.” In that same article, it stats that one way to boost your rankings is through better copywriting. So the question is a transcript better copywriting? I guess it depends on your current copy. For me, we don't write like we talk and we don't talk like we write so when I start to read a word for word transcription my mind gets stressed and I leave. What do you do in that situation? I've love to hear 888-563-3228 If you want to have transcriptions on your site, but somewhat put that "backstage" there is a cool plugin called Simple Podcast Press that allows you to copy and paste your transcripts and yet have then only appear when a website visitors clicks on them. He refers to them as Clutter-Free Transcripts, and if I was going to implement the transcripts, I would probably use this plugin. I already use it on my Ask the Podcast Coach website Transcriptions Tools Rev.com If you don't mind paying $1/monute rev.com has great quality (a human is doing the transcription service) Temi.com Temi is $6 an hour (or 10 cents a minute) and for a robot, not half bad. I've used it, and if you have the time to proof it a bit it's cool. I liked that you can enter the name of the speakers, and export as a word doc. You can also listen back at faster speeds. Reportex.io Reportext.io is an interesting twist. They sync the transcript and the audio. When you delete the word out the transcript it deletes it out of the audio. This works for REALLY obvious mistakes, but not for micro edits that need a surgeon's hands. For four hours of work, you are looking at over $53. You can test it for free. When I downloaded the text file, the formatting was pretty bad for time stamps. For me (as you can see) I write a blog post for my podcast (So I don't really need a transcript). But I had zero show notes and wanted a way to make them, Temi would be an economical way (assuming I had the time to tweak it) to get show notes. Ever met someone who wasn't really into shooting, but more into just always having the coolest newest gun, and then all the sudden they're not around anymore? Recently I was listening to a couple different podcasts, The Joe Rogen Experience with Dan Bilzarian, and the recent Freakonomics podcast on Maintenence, and a common theme came up in both shows: The idea that once you have the best thing, you don't get the same enjoyment out of something that isn't quite as good. In the Dan Bilzarian interview, he talked about how a lot of rich people aren't happy because they're able to buy whatever they want, and if they are only getting their enjoyment out of stuff, and not experiences, they run out of things to enjoy pretty quickly. I've seen this thing happen in the shooting sports a time or two, where someone isn't really into shooting, but into showing up to matches with the coolest newest thing. Eventually, they've got everything, and you stop seeing them as much when they move onto something else. I think the lesson here is this: If you want to stick around for a good long while, find your enjoyment in practice, progression, and actually shooting. By all means, shoot with the nicest gun you can afford, but just know, if you're getting your enjoyment out of the gun, that's a short buzz that doesn't last long. The News There's been a rash of gun store burglaries in North Carolina recently where the bad guys are taking stolen vehicles and driving them through the doors and walls of gun stores to gain entry in the middle of the night, and then stealing all the guns they can get their hands on. Here's the thing about this: the anti-gun crowd tells us that it's so easy for a bad guy to walk into a gun show and buy whatever gun they want with no repercussions, but if that were true, why would these criminals be going to these great lengths to break into gun stores to steal guns? There's been campus carry in Texas for a couple months now, and... nothing. A news outlet 'round those parts went on campus to interview students about it, and nothing's happened.
