Big Pool Theory - Der Podcast, der für's Schwimmen Wissen schafft
Mat-CAPs - das steht für "Maturity-based Corrective Adjustment Procedure", übersetzt also in etwa "Reife-basiertes Korrekturverfahren". Friend of the pod, comedian and gaming icon Lena Moon is joining us this week to chat about the 2009 action/sci-fi film "Gamer"!"Gamer" stars Gerard Butler and tells the story of Kable, an inmate on death row in the near future that is given the opportunity to get out of jail if he allows some nerdy gamers to play as an avatar version of him in a video game. The cast is stacked! Michael C Hall, Terry Cruz and Ludacris. Wow.John Leguizamo plays an inmate that we're introduced to at the start of the film, but his trajectory in this story is very similar to many of the characters John Leguizamo has played in his career. It's time for Kable's last stand, and he just got drunk! You got it, Russ and Jared a finishing Gamer (2009), starring Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall, Terry Crews, Ludacris, Amber Valletta, Logan Lerman, Kyra Sedgwick, and Alison Lohman. Believe it or not, the movie only gets more ridiculous from this point forward. And Jared gets his wish of a Michael C. Hall musical number! Tune in to hear all about it and find out how this one ends.

E., Baller, E., Gell, M., Patrick, L. M., Gur, R. E., Gur, R. C., Roalf, D. R., Romer, D., Wolf, D. H., Kable, J. W., Satterthwaite, T. D. Abstract: Delay discounting is a measure of impulsive choice relevant in adolescence as it predicts many real-life outcomes, including substance use disorders, obesity, and academic achievement. However, the functional networks underlying individual differences in delay discounting during youth remain incompletely described. Here we investigate the association between multivariate patterns of functional connectivity and individual differences in impulsive choice in a large sample of youth. A total of 293 youth (9-23 years) completed a delay discounting task and underwent resting-state fMRI at 3T. A connectome-wide analysis using multivariate distance-based matrix regression was used to examine whole-brain relationships between delay discounting and functional connectivity was then performed. These analyses revealed that individual differences in delay discounting were associated with patterns of connectivity emanating from the left dorsal prefrontal cortex, a hub of the default mode network. Delay discounting was associated with greater functional connectivity between the dorsal prefrontal cortex and other parts of the default mode network, and reduced connectivity with regions in the dorsal and ventral attention networks. These results suggest that delay discounting in youth is associated with individual differences in relationships both within the default mode network and between the default mode and networks involved in attentional and cognitive control. In today's episode, we'll dive into the psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy of aesthetics. Find out how your brain senses aesthetic experiences, how aesthetic senses can influence your behavior, and why people have studied the field of aesthetics for so long.About Dr. Cliff Workman: When we judge people for their moral or prosocial behaviors, do our perceptions of their beauty influence our evaluations? I am interested in understanding how morality and beauty interact to modulate decision-making. Prior to joining the ChatLab, I was a postdoctoral scholar in the Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Jean Decety. Our work investigates the psycholigical and neural mechansisms underpinning political polarization and support for ideologically-motivated violence. I received my Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in England in 2016 where I investigated relations between moral cognition and emotions and the physiopathology of major depression. Before starting my PhD, I worked at Johns Hopkins University on neuroimaging studies of psychiatric disorders, and also completed a B.S. in Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where I worked on studies of clinical, cognitive, and social functioning. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.12.511959v1?rss=1 Authors: Souther, M. K., Boateng, B., Kable, J. Abstract: The National Institute of Mental Health launched the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative to identify common biological mechanisms underlying mental disorders. A central challenge for this approach is to identify reliable biobehavioral paradigms that engage specific neural circuits implicated across psychiatric disorders. Delay discounting paradigms have been proposed as a promising candidate because both excessive and insufficient tendency to discount future rewards have been reported across a wide range of diagnoses. Because delay discounting involves multiple facets of neurocognitive functions, identifying specific neural systems engaged during the task can inform ongoing efforts in clinical neuroscience to link neural patterns to a core symptom dimension. To this end, we conducted a meta-analysis of 72 fMRI studies of delay discounting by common analytic approaches (contrasts) to test the predictions of commonly proposed mechanisms underlying the decision-making process. Despite being widely used in previous studies, comparing impulsive and patient choices did not reveal any reliable clustering of effects. Our results instead revealed that the subjective value, magnitude, and delay contrasts reliably engage the valuation network, with the subjective value contrast eliciting more widespread activation. Furthermore, both the difficulty and task contrasts engage the frontoparietal network. Taken together, our findings suggest that both reward valuation and action selection are important but do not fully explain impulsive versus patient choices. Taken together, these results provide further support that delay discounting task is a promising measure of reward valuation that reliably activates the valuation network. In addition, we discuss implications for analytic strategies for future studies in clinical neuroscience. Copy rights belong to original authors. W., Robinson, H., Platt, M., Kable, J., Long, H., Scully, M., Deluisi, J. A., Thase, M., Cristancho, M., Reber, J., Shinohara, R. T., Oathes, D. Abstract: Depression alleviation following treatment with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) tends to be more effective when TMS is targeted to cortical areas with high resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) with the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC). However, it has not yet been confirmed that rsFC-guided TMS coil placement leads to TMS modulation of the sgACC. For each participant (N=115, 34 depressed patients), a peak rsFC cortical hotspot for the sgACC and control targets were prospectively identified. Single pulses of TMS interleaved with fMRI readouts were then administered to these targets and established significant downstream fMRI BOLD responses in the sgACC. We then marked an association between TMS-evoked BOLD responses in the sgACC and rsFC between the stimulation site and sgACC. This effect was qualified by a difference between healthy and patient participants: only in depressed patients, positively connected sites of stimulation led to the strongest evoked responses in the sgACC. Our results highlight rsFC-based targeting as a viable strategy to causally modulate sgACC subcortical targets and further suggest that cortical sites with high positive rsFC to the sgACC might represent an alternative target for the treatment of depression. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.21.109728v1?rss=1 Authors: Lee, S., Parthasarathi, T., Kable, J. W. Abstract: Recent work has shown that the brain's default mode network (DMN) is active when people imagine the future. Here we test whether future imagination can be decomposed into two dissociable psychological processes linked to different subcomponents of the DMN. While measuring brain activity with fMRI as subjects imagine future events, we manipulate the vividness of these events to modulate the demands for scene construction, and we manipulate the valence of these events to modulate the demands for evaluation. We found that one subcomponent of the DMN, the ventral DMN or medial temporal lobe subsystem, responds to the vividness but not the valence of imagined events. In contrast, another subcomponent, the dorsal or core DMN, responds to the valence but not the vividness of imagined events. This separate modifiability of different subcomponents of the DMN by vividness and valence provides strong evidence for a neurocognitive dissociation between (1) the construction of novel, imagined scenes from individual components from memory and (2) the evaluation of these constructed events as desirable or undesirable. Abstract: Learning effectively from errors requires using them in a context-dependent manner, for example adjusting to errors that result from unpredicted environmental changes but ignoring errors that result from environmental stochasticity. Where and how the brain represents errors in a context-dependent manner and uses them to guide behavior are not well understood. We imaged the brains of human participants performing a predictive-inference task with two conditions that had different sources of errors. Their performance was sensitive to this difference, including more choice switches after fundamental changes versus stochastic fluctuations in reward contingencies. Using multi-voxel pattern classification, we identified context-dependent representations of error magnitude and past errors in posterior parietal cortex. These representations were distinct from representations of the resulting context-dependent behavioral adjustments in dorsomedial frontal, anterior cingulate, and orbitofrontal cortex. The results provide new insights into human brain that represent and use errors in a context-dependent manner to support adaptive behavior. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.06.080754v1?rss=1 Authors: Lee, S., Lerman, C., Kable, J. Abstract: A central finding in decision neuroscience is that BOLD activity in several regions, including ventral striatum and ventromedial prefrontal cortex, is correlated with the subjective value of the option being considered, and that BOLD activity in these regions can predict choices out of sample, even at the population-level. Here we show, across two different decision making tasks in a large sample of subjects, that these BOLD value-correlates are intrinsically history dependent. If the subjective value of the previous offer was high, the signal on the current trial will be lower, and vice versa. This kind of history dependency is distinct from previously described adaptation or repetition suppression effects, but instead is of the form predicted by theories of efficient coding such as time-dependent cortical normalization. In terms of practical application, since value-based choice behavior does not exhibit the same history dependence, neural prediction studies may exhibit systematic errors without accounting for history effects. The data-driven, interpretable, whole-brain prediction approach we use to identify history effects also illustrates one way to adjust predictions for neural history dependency. What Does Underrated Even Mean? This week on the podcast Brian and Johnny discuss the underrated… er, a stinker of a movie Gamer… the venture into the space of randomness. Enjoy! Gamer (2009) Plot In 2034, computer programmer Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) invents self-replicating nanites that replace brain tissue and allow humans to control other humans’ actions and see through their eyes. The first application of Castle’s “Nanex” technology is a virtual community life simulation game, Society, which allows gamers to manipulate live actors as their avatars. Society becomes a worldwide sensation, making Castle the richest man in the world. He then creates Slayers, a first-person shooter where the “characters” are death-row prisoners using real weapons in specially created arenas. Unlike Society actors, Slayers participants are not paid; instead, they volunteer in exchange for the promise that any Slayer who survives 30 matches will earn his freedom (though no one ever has). I’m very excited to share this interview with Rachael Kable, the host of one of my absolute favorite podcasts, The Mindful Kind! Rachael and I talk about mindfulness, which is especially important for high school students. We all experience stress, although high school students appear to carry it the most, especially in light of college admissions. Incorporating the easy & tangible mindfulness techniques Rachael mentions can lead to better physical health, attention, memory improvement, stress management, and ultimately-- a happier you. It’s so crucial that high school students incorporate a bit of mindfulness into their everyday lives, as the benefits can help them cultivate success. People often choose larger future rewards over smaller immediate ones, but then abandon that choice before the future reward arrives. Examples include starting a diet but then not sticking to it, quitting smoking but then relapsing, and most new year's resolutions. Psychologists often explain such behavior by reference to fundamental limitations in human cognitive systems, such as limited willpower or self-control. I will argue for an alternative explanation, in which the failure to persist toward delayed outcomes arises from a rational reevaluation process regarding temporally uncertain delayed rewards. I will talk about our work showing the critical role of uncertainty in persistence towards future outcomes and examining how different forms of uncertainty are encoded in the brain and affect other neural representations during voluntary persistence.
