Alleged serial killings

At the 2024 AHA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, historian David Trowbridge sat down with a handful of attendees to discuss topics of particular interest to historians in the present moment. In this episode of our new "Historians On" series, David speaks with Katharina Matro, Jeff McClurken, Kalani Craig, Jo Guldi, Johann Neem, Kevin Gannon, and Lauren Tilton on the topic of AI and its implications for history teaching and research.
From 1997-2010, a rash of drownings in the Mississippi River in La Crosse were mostly blamed by police on the culture of alcohol in Wisconsin. The deaths being attributed to people becoming inebriated, wondering down by the river, and ultimately falling in, unable to find their way out of the rushing or icy waters before succumbing. However, a pattern soon began to appear, as all of the victims were college-aged young men, athletic, popular, good-looking, good students, were drinking, and ended up in the river. All of these deaths were the result of a culture of marriage between alcohol and college, according to law enforcement. A group of independent investigators, some retired NYPD detectives, believed otherwise. They believe the deaths to be homicides, committed by a network of serial killers, deemed "The Smiley Face Killers," as smiley face grafitti was repeatedly found in the vicinity of these deaths, according to the detectives. Scott and Mickey discuss the "Smiley Face Killers" theory, the rationale behind it, the drownings in La Crosse and how they correlate with others throughout the country. In the opening Banter, we discuss the case of murder victim Mary Schlais, finally solved by DNA after 50 years, and the continued rise of familial DNA in solving cold cases. The "Smiley Face Killers" theory suggests that the drownings of young, college-aged men across the U.S. are not mere accidents but the work of an organized group of killers. Retired detectives Kevin Gannon, Anthony Duarte, and Michael O'Neill, after noticing disturbing patterns in multiple cases, posited that these deaths were staged to appear accidental, often marked by smiley face graffiti near recovery sites. Critics, including the FBI, maintain that these incidents are alcohol-related drownings, dismissing the graffiti as coincidental. The theory has sparked significant media interest and debate, with documentaries, true crime discussions, and online communities delving into the details. Despite skepticism, the detectives continue their investigation, seeking to bring awareness and potentially uncover the truth behind these mysterious deaths. October 31, 2002. Minneapolis, Minnesota. 21-year old university student Chris Jenkins celebrates Halloween by going to a local bar with friends. After he is ejected from the establishment, Chris vanishes without a trace and his body is found in the Mississippi River four months later. While police initially believe that Chris' death was an accidental drowning, his family uncovers disturbing discrepancies to suggest his body was not in the river the entire time he was missing and that he was a victim of foul play. After four years, the Minneapolis police chief reopens the investigation, reclassifies Chris' death as a homicide, and issues an apology to the Jenkins family. What actually happened to Chris Jenkins after he left the bar? Could his death somehow be connected to the infamous “Smiley face murder theory”? Josh Luckens interviews Dr. Kevin Gannon, who shares how he finds spaces of possibility to question the status quo in higher education, working alongside his students to build a more just and sustainable future. He discusses ways to stop inequities from reproducing themselves in the classroom, how he has moved from focusing on the product to the process of learning, and why he leads with compassion as an educator, helping students discover their own unique pathways to meaningful and authentic learning.Dr. Gannon posits that the better we can answer the following questions, the better the teaching and learning experiences that we design will be:How do I give students permission to take risks and fall short, knowing that a “failure” isn't the end of the process, but a necessary step towards learning and mastery? How will I get students connected with one another and myself in relationships built on mutual trust and shared purpose? How can I not take things personally, but instead lead with curiosity and meet my students where they actually are?How is everyone in this teaching and learning space acknowledging and meeting everyone else as fully and authentically human? How do I remain committed to a better future and act every day from that place?Dr. Kevin Gannon is the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence and Professor of History at Queens University. He is a regular contributor to The Chronicle of Higher Education and is the author of the book Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto.Additional resources:Kevin Gannon's Book: Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto Kevin Gannon's Blog: The Tattooed Professor: History, Teaching, and Technology With A Custom Paint JobEditor: Sarah Walkowiak (August, 2023)

Nikki Herd - I know the Smiley Face KillersNikki Herd joins Ed Opperman to share her research on what has now become an urban legend; the Smiley Face KillersThe smiley face murder theory (also known as the smiley face murders, smiley face killings, and smiley face gang) is a theory advanced by retired New York City detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, as well as Dr. Lee Gilbertson, a criminal justice professor and gang expert at St. Cloud State University. It alleges that 45 young men found dead in bodies of water across several Midwestern American states from the late 1990s to the 2010s did not accidentally drown, as concluded by law enforcement agencies, but were victims of a serial killer or killers. The term "smiley face" became connected to the alleged murders when it was made public that the police had discovered graffiti depicting a smiley face near locations where they think the killer dumped the bodies in at least a dozen of the cases. Gannon wrote a textbook case study on the subject titled "Case Studies in Drowning Forensics." The response of law enforcement investigators and other experts has been largely skeptical. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

During the past two years, faculty have experimented with new teaching modalities and new teaching techniques as we adapted to the COVID pandemic. In this episode, Kevin Gannon joins us to reflect on what we have learned during these experiences and what we are in danger of forgetting. Kevin is a history professor who has recently accepted a new position as the incoming director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence at Queen's University of Charlotte. In this third episode of our End of Sport Panels series, Johanna and Derek sit down with Amanda Mull, Steven Salaita, and Kevin Gannon to explore how some of our favorite anti-racist/anti-capitalist critics, folks whose focus in their work is not on sport, come to engage with sport and experience fandom. The conversation explores what the panelists get out of their engagements with racial capitalist sport and how their experiences with and through sport inform their politics. Amanda Mull is a three-time guest on the show and staff writer at The Atlantic. Steven Salaita is a former Associate Professor at Virginia Tech and should-have-been professor at the University of Illinois, before having his position revoked in an actual instance of ‘cancel culture,' for principled comments about Israeli apartheid. He is the author of eight books, including 2015's Uncivil Rites: Palestine and the Limits of Academic Freedom. Kevin Gannon is Professor of History at Grandview University and author of the recent book Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto. For a transcription of this episode, please click here. Are a series of accidental drownings actually the work of a cabal of killers? This week, Amy and Chris bring you the cases collectively known as the Smiley Face Murders, but there is not universal consensus that all these men dying in similar fashions is the work of killers. Chris and Amy walk you through the evidence that point to a gang of killers potentially targeting college-aged men throughout the country. Virtually every suspicious death goes like this: a young white male is found drowned after leaving a party. He is found with everything in his pockets except his phone. And nearby there is an eerily graffitied smiley face. New York detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, along with criminal justice professor Dr. Lee Gilbertson have devised this theory to explain nearly 50 similar deaths. But various police organizations reject the theory and believe them largely to be drunken accidents. So are all roughly 45 of these cases just a series of tragic coincidences or is there a serial killer or killers walking free among us? In today's episode, Kevin Gannon, a Professor of History and Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Grand View University, discusses how the pandemic has highlighted “bedrock” flaws in higher education systems, including in faculty evaluation processes. These flaws, based on dead ideas such as emphasizing equality rather than equity, disproportionately affect marginalized groups. Dr. Gannon elaborates on the destructive potential of returning “back to normal” in these systems after the pandemic, and offers steps that faculty can take to best move forward. Gannon, author of the book Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto (2020), also shares what keeps him inspired and why he believes we should remain hopeful about the future of higher education. // Kontakt: // E-Mail: podcast.stimmenimkopf@gmail.com Instagram: podcast.stimmenimkopf // Quellen: // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smiley_face_murder_theory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smiley_Face_Killers:_The_Hunt_For_Justice https://www.oxygen.com/crime-time/six-alleged-victims-smiley-face-killings https://www.oxygen.com/crime-time/chilling-details-make-you-believe-smiley-face-killings http://wiki2.benecke.com/images/b/b3/Facharbeit_OliviaPollok_TodimWasser-einbesondererFallinderGerichtsmedizin.pdf https://www.klinikum.uni-heidelberg.de/fileadmin/inst_rechts_verkehrsmed/pdfs/jur-ertrinken.pdf
Since 1997 young men have been disappearing for periods of time and then turning up in bodies of water. Upon first glance it's easy to brush these off as accidents, young men drinking too much and slipping or falling to their deaths: sad but not unheard of. It was in 2008 that Kevin Gannon, Anthony Duarte, Mike Donovan and Dr. Lee Gilbertson presented a theory to the world: What if these cases aren't accidents at all? For TeachLab’s tenth and final Failure to Disrupt Book Club we look back at Justin’s live conversation with regular Audrey Watters and special guest Kevin Gannon, professor and director of the Teaching and Learning Center at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. Together they discuss the final chapter of Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can’t Transform Education.“My institution is where you have students who are living in their cars, students who can't get basic needs, students who are working three jobs and need some technical solution to help them manage this workload. Retired New York City detective Kevin Gannon and criminal justice professor Dr. Lee Gilbertson join Larry to discuss their theory behind the various murders connected to the "Smiley Face Killings," resulting in the deaths of dozens of males since the late 1990s. Both Mr. Gannon and Dr. Gilbertson have been featured on the Oxygen network's docuseries, Smiley Face Killers: The Hunt for Justice, and have done extensive research into these murders, which have all been ruled as undetermined or as accidental drownings. Transcripts can be found via our website, humanrestorationproject.org.Our conversation today will center on teaching organization and collective activism. Essentially, we find ourselves at an important crossroads, as the administration shifts to new policies - teachers will be at the whim of new federal (and likely, state) policies that will have massive ramifications on classrooms, especially during COVID-19. And I hope out of this conversation, we'll be able to address - what should I be concerned about? What problems may exist? And then, okay...what can I do to actually mitigate these problems and demand an equitable education system?GUESTSDr. Kevin Gannon, the Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and a Professor of History at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, and author of Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto. The Smiley face murder theory (variations include Smiley face murders, Smiley face killings, Smiley face gang, and others) is a theory advanced by retired New York City detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, and Dr. Lee Gilbertson, a criminal justice professor and gang expert at St. Cloud State University.[1] They allege that a number of young men found dead in bodies of water across several Midwestern American states from the late 1990s to the 2010s[2] did not accidentally drown, as concluded by law enforcement agencies, but were victims of a serial killer or killers. The term "smiley face" became connected to the alleged murders when it was made public that the police had discovered graffiti depicting a smiley face near locations where they think the killer dumped the bodies in at least a dozen of the cases. Gannon wrote a textbook case study on the subject titled "Case Studies in Drowning Forensics".[3][4] The response of law enforcement investigators and other experts has been largely skeptical. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We delve deeper into the status of critical pedagogy in hybrid and online teaching. The transition to remote modalities raises many issues: surveillance of students and teachers, the reproduction of capital for private tech corporations, issues of course adaptation, and the accessibility of online formats. In this listener request episode, Heather is joined by Jon Towers of the Abracast Podcast. We will be discussing the Smiley Face Killers…or rather, the theory that they exist. This is a case that Jon presented to me back in Season 2 and he has some interesting insights and connections to different locations within the case(s). In 2008, retired New York Police Department detective Kevin Gannon and his team of investigators went public with their theory and have attempted to prove the existence of the Smiley Face Killers. They believe the serial killer gang murders college-aged men and dumps their remains in nearby bodies of water, leaving behind sinister happy face graffiti at the death sites. So, we are going to discuss several of the deaths that have led police to believe in the existence of this sinister gang. We will also discuss our theories about what may have happened to the victims mentioned in this episode. Additionally, we discuss our morbid curiosity with bones (human?)…found in one of our yards! We will be posting these photos on the website as well!Guest: Jon Towers Promo: The Abracast Podcast ----Find your favorite platform, buy merch, find sources, and more!https://linktr.ee/nvnpodcast Call/text us: 1-513-549-5735Email us: naturevsnarcissism@gmail.com Send us things: PO Box 498396 Cincinnati, Ohio 45249
Welcome to episode 39 of the Think UDL podcast: Radical Hope for Online Teaching with Kevin Gannon. Today's episode is part of a Summer 2020 series on UDL in online environments and I am delighted to have the opportunity to speak with Dr. Kevin Gannon today. Kevin is the Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) and Professor of History at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. His book, Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto was released in the spring of 2020 and has already become a “must-read” in academic circles and faculty book clubs throughout the United States and beyond. In Radical Hope, Kevin notes that UDL is one of the most important topics in higher education today and so I was happy when he agreed to speak to me about UDL at this particular moment as countless instructors are moving their courses online. His book deals with both seated and online courses, as his teaching manifesto is modality agnostic. However, our conversation focuses on how to implement the ideas he offers in his book specifically in online courses. Kevin has been a generous scholar and faculty developer in the several years that I have come to know him through the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network and I am so thankful for his time to talk to me about Radical Hope for online teaching.
On this special episode of Phoenix Thriving, Grand View University professor and CETL director Kevin Gannon stops by to share his experiences as a student, his teaching philosophy, and his perspective on the keys to unlocking the "radical hope" of education outlined in his new book.
Faculty enter teaching careers with the hope of shaping a better future for our students and our society. Many of our listeners may know him from his articles in the Chronicle of Higher Ed or his popular Twitter feed where he writes about teaching, dogs, race, politics, and seemingly whatever else is on his mind. In what sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, Ohio State medical student Brian Shaffer walked into a bar... and was never seen again. While Danny is on vacation, Casey and Sara walk through Brian’s last known moments and the most plausible theories as to what happened to him. They’re also joined by Kevin Gannon, a retired NYPD detective who investigated Brian’s disappearance and believes it may be connected to other cases.
One popular theory for Brian Shaffer's disappearance is The Smiley Face Killer. Retired detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte believe this killer (or killers) stalk popular college men, drug them at a bar, and leave them for dead in a nearby river while marking their work with an innocent smiley face. Is that what happened to the two young men in today's story or did they simply get too drunk one night and fall into the water? ---------- Written and edited by Schuyler Fastenau with the voice talents of Daniel Jones, Joe Burns, Brandon Maple, Kaitlyn Brown, Alexis Yordon, John Angeli, Justin Hissey, Sarah Brennan, and Antonio Hill. In addition to his research on the history of race and justice in the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, he’s done a lot of thinking about how to reshape the way we teach and share American history. In this conversation we discuss the future of the discipline, from inclusive classroom strategies to the phenomenal growth of #twitterstorians, tracking how technology is transforming our idea of who and what a historian can be.
Detective Kevin Gannon and Dr. Lee Gilbertson from the Oxygen Television Series, The Smiley Face Killers: The Hunt for Justice, join us on Supernatural Girlz Radio. Beginning in 1997 and stretching across eleven states from New York to Minnesota, 100 corpses that had been dredged from rivers, lakes and ponds shared too many similarities for it all to be coincidental. Almost without exception, victims were white, college-aged males who were athletic, good-looking, and academically successful. The team of four detectives, Kevin Gannon, Anthony Duarte, Mike Donovan and Dr. Lee Gilbertson came together to investigate these cases that had been closed by the local police departments. The detectives found startling similarities and many unanswered questions. After conducting their own investigations the detectives requested that the local Police Departments re-open these cases, previously classified as drownings, and investigate them as homicides. Who is kidnapping these young men, holding them at secret locations for up to 2 1/2 months and then dropping their bodies in water? And why? Tune in to find out. The truth is right here, on Supernatural Girlz.
Is there a serial killer gang murdering college-age men in the waters of America? October 31, 2002. Minneapolis, Minnesota. 21-year old university student Chris Jenkins celebrates Halloween by going to a local bar with friends. After he is ejected from the establishment, Chris vanishes without a trace and his body is found in the Mississippi River four months later. While police initially believe that Chris’ death was an accidental drowning, his family uncovers disturbing discrepancies to suggest his body was not in the river the entire time he was missing and that he was a victim of foul play. After four years, the Minneapolis police chief reopens the investigation, reclassifies Chris’ death as a homicide, and issues an apology to the Jenkins family. What actually happened to Chris Jenkins after he left the bar? Could his death somehow be connected to the infamous “Smiley face murder theory”? This week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” examines a truly baffling Halloween night mystery. On this episode of My Sistas' Keeper, Abby and I discuss how to hopefully resist the spirit of despair when talking about race, specifically on social media. We share our honest, raw emotions about the Philando Castile verdict and the killing of Charleena Lyles. We also discuss Scripture about despair and respond to listener questions about to respond to race-related tragedies and police brutality: How should Shalom Sistas talk to their children, students, etc., about these events? What should a Shalom Sista do if her church is silent in the face of injustice? How can white Shalom Sistas be allies right now? Is there a way for Shalom Sistas to engage with their local police departments to talk about racial profiling, etc.? How can Shalom Sistas leverage whatever platform they have (blog, community office, leadership position, ministry, relationships) to shed light on these tragedies and say what needs to be said? What are you longing to hear spoken or named--what do you think God is longing to hear spoken or named from pulpits? We mention: Trust talks: http://www.trusttalks.org/ The documentary 13th View it here. “But if you dismiss black complaints of mistreatment by police as being completely rooted in our modern context, then you’re missing the point completely. There has never been a period in our history where the law and order branch of the state has not operated against the freedoms, the liberties, the options, the choices that have been available to the black community, generally speaking. And to ignore that racial heritage, to ignore that historical context, means that you can’t have an informed debate about the current state of blacks and police relationship today, ‘cause this didn’t just appear out of nothing.
