The A Better HR Business podcast looks at how consultants and tech firms in the broad Human Resources field grow their businesses; and how they help employers get the best out of their people. Today we're joined on the show by Bill Reed, New York Times Bestselling Author, PMA Award Finalist, Harvard Neuroscience Certified, Navy Veteran, Product Marketing Expert Certified in PMM, ABM, Sales Enablement, and Leadership. Bill is also the Board Director & CMO of RemotelyMe, a veteran-owned business running on and partnered with EOS® Worldwide. RemotelyMe is dedicated to helping organizations find the right people and prospects for the right seats and solutions, in the right way. Remote and hybrid teams are challenged with high stress, low trust, and difficult communication. Traditional solutions for candidate and prospect profiling are decades-old, not based on visual neuroscience, are too complex, and often break the bank. RemotelyMe offers the only platforms and consulting services that use cognitive AI and visual neuroscience to discern for trust, which Deloitte says can drive 400% more business performance, 88% more customer success, and 79% more productivity. In a wide-ranging discussion, Bill and I talked about: ☑️ The challenges that remote work has brought to the issue of trust in organizations. ☑️ How can visual neuroscience assessments help in measuring and improving trust in the workplace? ☑️ Why do traditional methods like engagement surveys and personality tests have low validity rates when it comes to assessing trust? ☑️ Understanding the different parts of the brain and their dominance helps in determining an individual's trust factors. ☑️ How does building a high-trust environment in an organization lead to improved customer loyalty and productivity? ☑️ Tangible steps organizations can take to build a high trust environment for their employees. ☑️ How can HR teams and executives incorporate the principles of visual neuroscience and trust-building in their strategies for employee engagement and development? Chatting with avid researchers like Tracie Peterson always offers super-cool insights into things you never knew. Like her research for her upcoming release. She talked about the THOUSANDS of plant varieties displayed in the landscaping of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, and so it was no wonder that she included a botanist among the characters of Finding Us. Listen in to see what other cool things she learned writing the Pictures of the Heart Series. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. I Love a Good Fair, but Finding Us Shares Something Unprecedented! From roller coasters to children's days to Inuits sweltering in their furs during a heatwave, the Seattle Exposition had it all. And Tracie Peterson's "Camera Girls" are capturing it one photograph at a time.  See how she uses these girls, their Brownie cameras, and the exposition to tell gripping stories you won't want to miss. And covers. #BecauseGorgeousCovers! In addition to that, we chatted about faith, about research, and... the latest books she's read. Reminder: 26 Below by Kimberley Woodhouse and Rembrandt is in the Wind. Finding Us by Tracie Peterson One candid photograph will change the lives of four people forever. While taking photographs at an exposition in Seattle in 1909, Camera Girl Eleanor Bennett snaps an image of a woman in widow's clothes with deep sorrow etched in her expression and a young infant in her arms. Eleanor longs to study botany at the University of Washington and soon becomes fast friends with botanist Bill Reed, but she can't stop thinking about the widow in the photograph. She is stunned to learn Bill recognizes the woman as the sister-in-law he believed lost in a shipwreck. As Eleanor and Bill hunt for Amelia Reed to reunite her with her grief-stricken husband, they must stand together to face the danger that follows and learn to trust that God will direct their paths. Enterprise Incidents with Scott & Steve

For our deep dive of "Bem," we're honored to welcome our very special guest Bill Reed, who directed all six episodes from the second season of "Star Trek: The Animated Series." While on an exploratory mission of the newly discovered planet Delta Theta III, the Enterprise crew is joined by honorary commander Ari Bn Bem, a Pandorian observer whose questionable actions while on board the Enterprise have made Captain Kirk suspicious about his motives. His suspicions are quickly proven correct when Bem sabotages the landing party, leading to their capture by the primitive reptilian beings that inhabit the planet. Kirk and Spock attempt to escape, only to discover the presence of a powerful non-corporeal alien entity that is protecting the natives in an effort to guide them towards intelligence. Written by David Gerrold, who wrote the classic original series episode "The Trouble with Tribbles," "Bem" is a terrific, ambitious and cerebral episode that -- like many of the best episodes of "The Original Series" -- finds the Enterprise crew being humbled by the presence of a very powerful race. Summary of the article titled Shifting from sustainability to regeneration from 2007 by Bill Reed published in the Building Research & Information journal. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see the difference between sustainability and regeneration in relation to the environment. This article investigates how the designers and stakeholders can create a whole system of mutually beneficial relationships thus moving beyond sustaining the environment to regenerate its health as well as our own. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: Sustainability, as currently practised in the built environment, is primarily an exercise in efficiency. In other words, the use of environmental rating systems and other mechanisms allows a reduction in the damage caused by excessive resource use. However, instead of doing less damage to the environment, it is necessary to learn how one can participate with the environment by using the health of ecological systems as a basis for design. The shift from a fragmented to a whole systems model is the significant cultural leap that consumer society needs to make – through framing and understanding living system interrelationships in an integrated way. A place-based approach is one way to achieve this understanding. The design process begins by attempting to understand how the systems of life work in each unique place. The role of designers and stakeholders is to create a whole system of mutually beneficial relationships. By doing so, the potential for green design moves beyond sustaining the environment to one that can regenerate its health – as well as our own. You can find the transcript through this link. What wast the most interesting part for you? What questions did arise for you? Let me know on twitter @WTF4Cities! I hope this was an interesting episode for you and thanks for tuning in. What if we could transform the planet and our relationship to it and each other by simply focusing on transforming one place at a time? Bill Reed and Regenesis Inc. contend just that: that by understanding the unique essence of a place, its history and geology as well as its social and geographical dynamics, we can regenerate that place and its surroundings as an integral part of a greater whole. Were we to do this on a city by city basis, with only 4037 cities larger than 100,000 people, and 3.5% being an average tipping point, we would need only to transform 141 cities to start a domino effect that would affect the entire planet. Through our conversation, Bill invites us to think both smaller and bigger at the same time, to recognize systems nested within systems, wholes within wholes. We are challenged to move from separateness to a rich experience of interwoven connectedness, to move into a way of being that has us be an indigenous part of the natural world.

In this episode, I sit down with Bill Reed, a regenerative rebel, an accomplished architect, and a visionary in the community transformation area. He's led and assisted on regenerative design projects over the last decade. We talk about taking risks, how he has changed the attitude of communities in Bill's past projects, regeneration and reconstructing our relationship with the world, the benefits of his projects to communities, and connection between self-transformation and the so-called controlled cultivation of a community group. In addition, we discuss movements that people can connect to, place as a unit of design, working on our places in order to save the world, climate change, and feeding the world in our backyards. We also touch on potential, our most important role in the planet, and what one can do in one's communities to be an illumination for the people around. This episode is replete with ideologies and suggestions on how we can help change and save the world in our own little way—even by starting with self-love first. The green building movement has both benefited and been harmed by the development of green building rating systems. The benefit is that the rating systems have introduced people to the issues of ecological design in easy to grasp pieces. The harm has occurred because people think that green design is about simply adding these pieces to a project; potentially adding cost, inefficiency, and in some cases actually more harm to the environment. Sustainable design requires a different mindset or mental model. This model enables looking at systems in a more complete way. Instead of looking at just the physical elements of the building, the invisible connections between the elements need to be understood. In this episode, Bill Reed of Regenesis discusses how integrative thinking improves the design process to deliver high performing buildings that enrich communities and create healthy environments. Bill Reed is an internationally recognized planning consultant, design process facilitator, lecturer, and author in sustainability and regeneration. He is a principal of Regenesis, Inc. – a regenerative design, living systems integrator, and education organization. His work centers on creating the framework for and managing an integrative, whole and living system design process. This work is known as Regenerative Development. It is a meta-discipline that unifies the pattern understanding practices of Ecological Design, Biophilia, and Organizational Psychology into a design process that lifts building and community planning into full integration and co-evolution with living systems. The objective: to improve the overall quality of the physical, social and spiritual life of our living places and therefore the planet. Bill Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Using regenerative design principles in business and the built environment How permaculture informs regenerative development Healing the earth in 18 months Moving beyond sustainability to regenerative development Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Interview Highlights: Tell us a little bit about the process at Regenesis. You talk a lot about "place" and the "story of place." Tell us what that means and why this is so important when you're leading this type of regenerative work. Yeah, it's the foundation. By place we mean everything in that place: human consciousness, worms, habitat, geology, business, infrastructure and you name it. All of those aspects of life are in what we call "place." So, we don't separate people from place, for instance. They're part of it. And we don't separate nature from place. It's not about placemaking, it's about place as a living organism. Our philosophy is that every place we live in is a unique living organism on the planet and is evolutionary in its own particular, unique way. Unless we understand this, then what gives us the right to build there? We have found that once we work in congruence and in harmony with place, actually ecosystems and social systems recover their health, become dynamically stable and evolutionary all at the same time. The shift that we see when we work with that level of wholeness is profound. I learned so much just chatting with some of your colleagues during the work that we did and just learning how the geography and the history of a certain place, and understanding that that's really what created the culture that's in that place today. It's amazing how crucial it is to understand this to be able to address the specific sustainability issues that place might be facing. Yes. You can't escape mother nature, it just surfaces. You might ask, "So what? What does having that understanding do for us?" If nothing else, it awakens us to fall in love. I like to say that we're dating nature when we do this and it helps a community actually understand, honor and love what and who this place is. It's also a much different motivator than feeling guilty or feeling that we should do something. Although fear is a great motivator too of course, but hopefully we have that impulse of care and mutual reciprocity behind it. You've been talking about this need to transition from sustainability to regenerative development for quite some time. We're now seeing it become more of a topic in corporations, in universities, in communities that are starting to use that language of moving beyond sustainability. How do you think this transition is coming along? What are you seeing in this movement overall? I am seeing some incredible work being done in the regenerative agricultural field. I think it's more easy to understand because people can regenerate. They can see that the soil can be regenerated. But there's a nuance here. Regeneration is not restoration. Restoration is part of regeneration, but regeneration is the ability to do it again. It isn't doing it the first time. So, to regenerate soil or regenerate an ecosystem is not about doing it once. The Re is really important. It's the capability to keep engaging as systems change and as life evolves. So the "Re" is important here. It's rebirth. It's birth, life, death, rebirth cycles. So, how do we learn to understand our role in the system? Farmers typically are closely engaged with their soil, so to some degree they're doing regenerative work if they're paying attention. But about 90% of the world doesn't live on farms anymore. And they're the ones with the votes. They're the ones that are making decisions. How do we build that understanding in a population that basically thinks food comes in plastic wrapped containers. What is one piece of advice you'd give sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Number one, work with deep integration. Co-create with community, design team and owners. Once you start working with integration, the question becomes where do you stop integrating? That means that we actually have to start getting into how life works. So, if we're sustaining life then we better understand how life works as best we can. So, the recommendation is understand how to be an ecologist. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability or regenerative development? I think a lot of us are somewhat depressed about the state of the world and how little we've done. But when even three to five years ago, people were not very receptive to this concept, so many people are opening their minds and hearts now to realize that we have to do something differently. So, I don't know if I'm excited about anything in the world of sustainability, I'm excited about the world that people are realizing fundamentally that we have to work in a different way. It's that Greek definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I think finally people are realizing we need to change the paradigms out of which we're working. So that's exciting. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? He speaks a lot about what we believe in. His name is Charles Eisenstein and his new book is called: Climate, a New Story. I'm kind of tired of reading about climate, but he changes the dimensions on that. I recommend that. I'm reading it now and enjoying it a lot. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? We are collaborative learners. We are learning this as we're teaching it to people. There is no answer book for this work. So, I highly recommend the Regenerative Practitioner Course. I highly recommend reading Carol Sanford's books, because I think both of them talk about this work in a unique way. The resources are really these living system frameworks and you can read about them. Yeah, it sounds so self aggrandizing. I apologize for that, but I just don't know the other resources for these things. JG Bennett's work is a source for these systemic frameworks. They open up a different world and so I'll leave it at that. Where can people go to learn more about you and the work you're doing at Regenesis? Our website is regenesisgroup.com and you can also access our education site, which we just changed the name to Institute for Regeneration. My email address is: reed@regenesisgroup.com. Oh yeah I also mention this recent recreate of Making Permaculture Stronger's purpose that Joel Glanzberg helped me with and that uses the pattern I explored with Bill Reed here: MPS inspires creative exploration and dialogue around permaculture design in a way that develops our ability to think and act creatively as and with community to effect the large scale systemic change we need. Oh yeah Jason mention this amazing white paper on the four levels of Regenerative Agriculture by Ethan Roland Soloviev & Gregory Landua. I can't believe I haven't read this yet. Hey all. In this episode I share my second conversation with Bill Reed from Regenesis Group and the Regenerative Practitioner Seminar (our first chat is here). It is a conversation I highly recommend in which we look in detail at several aspects of how the rubber hits the road in the regenerative development or living systems approach Bill works with. I also get a bunch of things off my chest at the start around bumping this whole conversation up a notch and inviting your input into where and how Making Permaculture Stronger evolves from here. Hope to hear from you (whether via a few bucks via our patreon page and/or your reflections and suggestions in the comments below or through the contact page). I have to say all this focus on the likes of Bill and Joel Glanzberg and Carol Sanford is starting to rub off on me. I have noticed that the language I use is on the move, the thoughts I think are on the move, and even my entire understanding of what the heck Making Permaculture Stronger is and could be about are on the move! Heed this warning my friends: these people are dangerous radicals who consciously mess with minds. As Bill says, they see what they do as a mental technology that is intended to frustrate and destabilise you out of your automatic patterns. Bill mentions this article by Jonah Lehrer in the New Yorker, I mention possibility management, and you can find out more about Regenesis Group here and Carol Sanford here. Example Purpose Statements including Function, Being, and Will As promised, here are the function, being, and will based purpose statements Bill shared: The Yestermorrow design / build school's purpose is to learn together through shared inquiry and hand-on experience the ways of making human habitat... (function)...in a way that expands our understanding of who we are and how to live in beneficial interrelationship with the earth and each other... (being)...so that we all can thrive in a world with limited resources and unlimited potential (will) and I’m going to take raw ingredients and transform them into a meal for my family… (function)…in a way that we sit down with our children and share our love for each other, or at least our daily events around the table… (being)…so that our children have the psychological wellbeing and nourishment to grow into responsible adults (will) As a recap the function aspect is about what are we doing and transforming? The being aspect is how do we want to be and what do we need to become to do this? Or as Joel Glanzberg has put it to me, what are the capacities to Be you are aiming to develop during this task? The will aspect is what is the larger field we wish to shift or positively impact? As Bill put it this is like asking what is the purpose of the purpose? Keep in mind also, if you can handle it at this stage (I barely can!) that Bill talked about paying attention to the so called three lines of work at function, then again at being, then again at will. The three lines of work are the immediate whole you are working with (might be you, or your school garden), the proximate whole (might be your team, or the school community) and the greater whole that you envisage being able to positively impact through your work (might be the farm, or the community the school is nested within). Here's a preliminary attempt I made at an upgraded purpose statement for Making Permaculture Stronger:55 Making Permaculture Stronger exists to hold a unique space for intelligent, collegial, and rigorous inquiry and dialogue into the subject of permaculture design process... (function)...in a way that respectfully honors permaculture’s incredible depth and value and openly explores ways its potential might be more fully and rapidly developed... (being)...so that it continues to thrive, grow and evolve in its ability to contribute positively to humanity and the earth (will) After some reflections on this from Joel Glanzberg (thanks Joel!),

So here we are, another week and we have not 1, not 2, but 3...3 more mass shootings in this country. I cannot begin to express my frustration about this topic considering we literally just covered this topic a few episodes ago! But we refuse to just let these shootings deter us from trying to engage our listeners and the country in a way that breaks the cycle of outrage, polarization, and back into inaction again. So why do we keep falling into this cycle? Because instead of talking about what is really the cause of mass shootings we get caught up in arguing on Facebook or the media about gun control, conspiracy theories like false flag events, racism, Donald Trump being the anti-christ, etc. All this does is cue the same cycle of arguing and inaction which is exactly why we are in this mess and it must stop. For this very important and emotional episode, Michael and Bill discuss the role of political rhetoric as the main culprit in mass shootings and how it is pushing mentally unstable and marginalized people into action. We also dive into the recent comments by Mayor Pete that mass shootings are more about displaced anger and frustration with a government that only serves the special interest groups and donor classes. So help us change the dynamics of how we discuss these shootings! As always I am joined in the studio by the Armchair QB himself Bill Reed. Everybody knows college tuition is expensive right? But are the loan companies and the government to blame? Instead of complaining about the loan companies and whether the government should cancel out loans maybe we should start with schools like our own Ohio State University who paid out $58 Million in bonuses to 98 employees. Maybe we should look at the $200 million the athletic department brought in last year in addition to their $200 million in expenses. It is easy to point the finger at everybody but why is nobody talking about why on earth 98 employees for a state school should get $58 million in bonuses when that money could go to lowering tuition for all of the students. To put it into perspective, the $58 million in bonuses would pay for over 2000 OSU student's $26,000 tuition plus room & board for 2018.The $200 million in revenue for the OSU athletic department could go a long way to help lower tuition as well couldn't it? I am not naive, I love OSU football. But every one of us needs to ask the question if a national championship program is worth our children and ourselves being over $100,000 in school loan debt. Hell, that will be close to $200,000 by the time my 5 year-old daughter is in college. That is like buying a new flat screen tv and then not being able to afford to fix the roof or pay your electric bill. All of this is symptomatic of a bigger problem...the uber wealthy in this country are taking everything for themselves and protecting that advantage by making it easier for their children and at the same time making it harder for the people who need help the most. Just look to the USC cheating scandal and politicians doing favors for their wealthy donor's kids.We gotta look in the mirror as a country and ask ourselves why we are letting the wealthy in this country make money off the backs of the people who haven't even gotten started in life yet? Why aren't every one of us demanding our state and federal representatives look into this and put a cap on state schools salaries or perhaps something along those lines. Tough subject to tackle but who else than America's Counselor to be the one who takes it head on. In case you have been living under a rock the past week, you may have heard something about the Mueller Report being delivered to the Attorney General & the findings did not implicate President Trump of any wrong doing. Even before the report was released people were salivating about what it would say but count me as one person who was thinking the report would not make a difference at all. Why do you ask? Simple, regardless of what that report said each side was going to reject the data and evidence and continue to believe the same thing.Since it came out that Trump did not do anything wrong, I knew that Democrats were going to say the report was fixed or still somehow believe that he was guilty. If the opposite happened, then Republicans would have rejected the evidence and said that it was a fake witch hunt & failed attempt to impeach the president. That is the world that we live in...a post facts world where people deny evidence that contradicts what they want to believe. We literally live in a world where liberals and conservatives live in an alternate reality with its own data, evidence and rules. And we wonder why we are gridlocked as a country! How do we get everyone to come together when the media and political campaigns are basically trying to divide us and reject the reality that doesn't support what they want you to believe? As a fellow researcher & professional, we have failed in using science and research to talk to people and explain the world around then. In fact we have flat out failed in talking to people in a way that actually makes them want to talk with us.So what do we do? According to our guest Dan Evans of the non-profit organization People of Reason & Progress, maybe we should do less talking and more listening. Instead of trying to change people's opinions maybe we shoudl start asking what they believe and why they believe that...and leave it at there. If we are going to change the polarization and divide in this country, we are going to need different ways of talking to each other and these suggestions are the best place to start.Dan Evans is the chairmen of PORP, a nonprofit organization committed to supplanting unreasonable political action with ethical, evidence-based discourse that benefits the public interest. Gray Matters Radio With Michael DeVine

Anybody that knows me well enough understands that skiing is one of my passions in life. It isn't just because I am an adrenaline junkie (which I am) but more because it is the only sport that gives me the ability to push myself beyond my comfort zone and whether I succeed or bite it hard, I grow exponentially as a person.Snow sports is a unique sport that you have to embrace failing as a necessary part of getting better. If you are afraid of failure, then you will never do anything to push yourself and will never learn what you need to learn to get better. It is something so pure and so simple but something any snowboarder or skier will tell you you must learn how to be okay with. This dynamic is very personal to me because I hear in my office every day a generation of children who are so scared of failing that they will avoid doing anything that might give them a chance of failure.I don't know about you, but in the world that I live in it is impossible to grow as a human being and get ahead in life if you avoid doing anything that might give you a chance at failure. This is why skiing plays such an important role in my life and why I tend to gravitate to people who understand what this sport can do for the soul. Its not by chance that I started out the blog for this week's podcast with these points because I think we have a serious problem in America that unless addressed, will be a problem that prevents this country from being what it should. If we truly want to Make America Great Again, we have to address the huge problem of people being petrified of failure. Not only that, but we have a huge problem with people being pulled apart and polarized in every facet of life. We are so divided as a country that I think it is more difficult to find any area of life right now that brings people together. That is where snow sports again is the model to the rest of the country. Just go to any local ski & snowboard slope and you will see parents and children happily shredding together. Even teenagers and their parents...shocking I know! You will see groups of kids pumping each other up, encouraging each other, pushing each other, and being outside with each other. Not only that, a group of teenagers shredding on the mountain after school & on the weekend is too busy to get themselves into trouble with drugs & other stupid things. That is why we have brought in this weeks special guests Kevin Sayler & Teddy Goggin who are putting on The Silverthorne April First Friday Rail Jam presented by Arapahoe Basin. These are two guys who completely understand the role that skiing and snow-boarding can play in a persons life and decided to bring together the community of Silverthorne, Colorado to celebrate the hard work of the snow sports community. Join us as we talk about how snow sports can be a valuable tool that teaches confidence, helps overcome adversity, brings parents and children together, and creates a community that brings people together instead of pulling them apart. If that wasn't amazing enough, it also gets people outside exercising and interacting with nature which research has shown time and time again is the easiest things people can do to overcome depression and anxiety. All the necessary ingredients to make a country great again. Funny how the secret to bringing the country back together was found by a bunch of skiers and snowboarders in Colorado...who would have though it?As always I am joined by the Armchair QB himself Bill Reed to help keep me in-check and firmly in The Gray. I remember in college sitting around with my friends and talking about what it would be like if marijuana were legalized. Most of our visions centered around going to the local mini-mart and buying a pack of Marlboro Green. How far off could we have been? Just go to any state where marijuana has been legalized for medical or recreational use and you will quickly see that this business is not only here to stay, but whoever was able to get in on it is going to make lot's of money. But with all of that money has come the very corporate practices that most marijuana patients/enthusiasts are completely against...in fact the yin to their yang. In my own home state of Ohio, we had a legalization bill voted down not because the people didn't want to legalize it, but rather the people behind the bill wanted to have a monopoly where they were the only ones allowed to grow and sell it.Fast forward a few years and Ohio passed medical marijuana legislation but ask anyone who wanted to open their own dispensary and they quickly found out that corporate interests in the form of outside money and previously owned dispensaries were the only people having their applications approved. Not only that ,just the other day there was an advertisement from former Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner about a marijuana industry seminar that helped people invest in the marijuana industry. My how far we have come!If this wasn't enough to show how corporate interests and monopolies are taking over the industry, the financial banking companies have started taking advantage of dispensary, growers, and merchandisers in the industry in the form of only offering high risk billing and payment solutions. This comes in the form of outlandish credit card processing fees and banking fees which costs these companies hundreds of thousands of dollars every year. Its monopolistic because the same companies that refuse to process their payments are the same companies starting high risk processing companies leaving them no options but to take the higher rates. This is going on across the country and the hypocrisy of politicians who were completely against it 5 years ago are the very same people now allowing these practices to happen. The only thing that changed was the fact that this a billion dollar industry now and the special interest groups have now gotten politicians in their back pocket. To help us discuss this topic we are inviting Sami Spezio & Dominic Buccilla from Gray Matters Radio's new sponsor Canna Group . The Canna Group LLC was founded on a platform of 30+ years operational experience as consultants in the merchant services industry. Our Mission is to consult and empower business within the dynamically evolving cannabis industry to understand how implement electronic payments into their operation plan. We offer expert knowledge on the ever-changing laws that allow all cannabis businesses, from seed to retail, to accept and utilize debit-based card transactions in a safe environment that will eliminate the risk of cash-based business. As always I am joined by my co-host the Armchair QB himself Bill Reed to help keep me sane and safely in the gray. Ever since Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unveiled her Green New Deal, politicians and pundits have been either saying it is a communist trojan horse or progressive thinking that will save the planet. In my years as a therapist, whenever you see that big of a spread between people's interpretation of something you know the truth lies somewhere in the middle. With something as complicated as the Green New Deal, we decided that if we were going to take this to The Gray, we needed someone who actually understands history and macro economic theory. So we once again enlist the knowledge of The Professor, Richard DeVine to help us understand the economic feasibility of the Green New Deal and what the effects of a 80% tax rate would be on people making more than 10 million dollars. Since The Professor actually lived through real communism during the 60s, we asked him to weigh in on any fear that he has about The Green New Deal and what he really thinks of the progressive wing of the Democratic party.Joining me in the studio as always is The Armchair QB himself, Bill Reed, to keep me honest and firmly in The Gray. Anybody that has worked in the addiction industry long enough knows very well that the most important part of treatment/recovery isn’t treatment itself but rather the aftercare. That may surprise many of you considering how much emphasis we have on treatment programs and the costs associated with treatment, but the truth is that real recovery begins and ends with the plan after they finish treatment. It makes all the sense in the world if you think about it because many of us look at addiction as one part genetics and one part the enviroment someone lives in. How successful could someone be with staying sober if once they get out of treatment they go right back into the same environment that helped contribute to their addiction to begin with? It is almost impossible. While people who come from a family of means have it much easier to change their environment, people who tend to be poorer and live in lower socioeconomic areas have much less control over changing their environment. That is pretty obvious but you know what factor nullifies your ability for a good aftercare program even if you come from money? Try changing your life and environment around when you have a felony on your record. How exactly does a felony make staying sober more difficult? Easy, with a felony on your record it is almost impossible to get an apartment lease, a good paying job, student loans, etc. I have had clients who come from great families and have totally turned their lives around but still couldn’t get an apartment or a student loan until their felony was expunged from their record. It is almost impossible to turn your life around when you have such limited options on where you live and how much money you can make at work. This is why most people with felonies on their record go right back into the same environment and will eventually start using again. What is most concerning is we are seeing people with advanced college degrees such as computer science, falling into the cycle of addiction because of the nature of their work. These employees looking to get an edge turn to illegal stimulants which in turn leads to legal trouble because of their habit. Once they have that felony drug or other felonies on their record they can’t get past HR for the big companies because of their legal problems. This is why we are throwing out there that perhaps one of the most impactful & easiest actions that we can take to tackle the addiction problem is criminal justice reform with drug offenders. To help us dive into this topic we are welcoming our special guest Juan Garcia from the Cornbread Hustle Employment Agency in Dallas, Texas. Juan Garcia is a prison reform advocate and a recruiter for Cornbread Hustle, a staffing agency for second chances. Juan has first hand knowledge of state and private prisons and the struggles of gaining employment after being incarcerated. Juan was sentenced to eight years in prison at the age of 19. Today, he spends most of his time advocating for second chances and putting efforts towards reducing recidivism. As always I am joined by my co-host the Armchair QB himself Bill Reed to help keep me sane and safely in the gray. My guest today has been a big inspiration to me and has been a leader in regenerative design, pretty much before that was even a term. Bill Reed is an internationally recognized practitioner, lecturer, and authority in sustainability and regenerative planning, design and implementation. He is a principal in both Integrative Design, Inc. and Regenesis – two organizations working to lift green building and community planning into full integration and evolution with living systems. Bill is also the author of many technical articles and contributed to many books including the seminal work, “Integrative Design Guide to Green Building.” He is also a founding director of the US Green Building Council and one of the co-founders of the LEED Green Building Rating System. Bill has consulted on over two hundred green design commissions, the majority of which are LEED Gold and Platinum and Living Building Challenge projects.  He is also a keynote speaker at major building and design events as well as a guest lecturer to universities throughout Europe and North America including Harvard, MIT, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania. I've been looking forward to connecting with Bill for quite some time and this interview did not disappoint. We talk at length about Bill's design process and the perspective needed to remain open to the full scope and context that a design might affect. Bill warns of the dangers of going into a design job looking for problems to solve and projects to implement before understanding and listening to the place and the people in it. The insights from this interview were quite profound for me and I hope this will spark a larger conversation about what regenerative design is and has the power to do Resources: Regenesis Group website Guide to LEED building certification US Green Building Council

Dedicated to Jeff, JP, Bill & Reed, and to everyone else who's just trying to hang on a little bit longer.   TRANSCRIPT Hi, and welcome to another episode of lessons from life. Remember, on January 1st we are changing our name to Like Driving in Fog: an Emotional Healing Podcast. I’m Mary Young, and I’m so glad you’re listening to us today. Yesterday, 22 December, we talked about how sometimes there are no answers. And I went to bed last night still thinking about that, and thinking I can’t just leave it at that. It’s true that sometimes there are no answers, but even when we don’t have answers, we have hope. There is always hope. You can’t always see it. Sometimes it’s hard to believe in it. But just like no matter how dark the night is the sun comes up again the next morning; just like an eclipse has to end and the sun comes back out from whatever was hiding it; hope is the same way. You can’t always see it, but it’s always there. And if you can wrap your head around that, if you can wrap your heart around that, it helps you hang on. And you guys, I’m not just blowing smoke. I would not stand here in front of this microphone and say stuff just because it sounds good, because that’s not me. I’ve had people say stuff to me just because it sounds good. It didn’t help. What I am sharing is what I have learned from my own emotional healing journey. I said it yesterday; I’ll say it again. I have never been depressed to the point of being actively suicidal, but I have been hopeless. I have been through emotional healing that I didn’t think was ever to happen. I have had nights where I curled up in my bed and cried, or went to the shower and cried until the hot water was gone, and my arms and legs were cramping because I had cried so much. There were times when I didn’t think it would ever get any better, and I would just be trapped, and I would just always be miserable. But I was wrong. It did get better. I’m not trapped, and I’m not miserable. I kept holding on to hope. I kept looking to other people who had been through the same process, who were going through the same process, who were experiencing the same shit. And I went to them for wisdom and advice. I had friends who could help me see the stars when all I could see was a black night. I had friends who could rekindle that spark in me when the world around that had blown it out. I had friends who weren’t afraid to sit with me in the dark instead of trying to tell me where the light switch was. And I had two very good therapists. healing partners are essential. Whether that healing partner is a friend, a talk therapist, a massage therapist...you need somebody. We all need somebody, Not just to listen to us. We all need somebody. We can’t do this alone. if you go back to the concept of driving in fog, and that first foggy trip that I took when I was 21, driving home from the movie theater in northern Indiana. if I had not had a friend making that trip with me, I don’t know what the outcome might’ve been. I might’ve decided to stop and sleep by the side of the road. But I had somebody in the car with me to encourage me, to help me find the road, to help me stay on the road, once we found it. It made a difference. This healing journey that I’ve been on has had a lot of foggy days. There’s been a lot of times when I just didn’t know what I was supposed to do next. Didn’t know what I was seeing. didn’t know if anything was ever going to change, if I would ever stop crying, if I would ever be somebody that I can like, if the flashbacks or whatever stop, if I would ever stop having panic attacks. But I had healing partners, and I had friends, and between them, they helped me remember that hope is always there. I said it yesterday, I’ll say it again. Sometimes the only thing you can do is stubbornly hang on. Hang on to this too shall pass. Hang on to there is always hope. I don’t feel it right now, but it’s there. And when you can’t hang on anymore, I hope you have a friend that you can go to and say hey, I’m having a hard time hanging on to hope. Can you help me? It’s hard. It’s hard to reach out to a friend and say I need help. It’s hard to reach out to a friend and say this is more than I can handle. It was hard to admit that I needed to see a therapist, and then oh my God, it was hard to go. And nobody tells you how hard it is to go to the therapist. Nobody tells you how hard it is to keep going back, and to look at things that are painful. But I will tell you this. If I had not kept going back, if I had not looked at the stuff that hurt and started processing it, I would not be the person I am today. And I really like the person I am today. I like the stability I have. I like the resilience I have. I like the fact that I’m more interested in encouraging other people. I like the fact that I’m brave enough to do a podcast. none of that would have happened if I had not been stubborn 25 years ago, and stubbornly kept insisting: the only way out is through; I can do this; there’s always hope. Personally, I had a three-part mantra for those nights when I was afraid to close my eyes because I didn’t know what kind of nightmare I would have, and I didn’t want to wake up scared so I thought I would just try to stay awake all night. I had three things that I clung to. Yours will be different because we’re not the same people. For me, it was:  God is good. God loves me. Somebody is praying for me. And every time I would do that, I would replace the word somebody with a particular name. Katie is praying for me. Barb is praying for me. Karen is praying for me. Rachel is praying for me. Alice is praying for me. Because I know my friends, and I knew, I knew, that they were praying for me. You can have a different mantra, but one of the best things you can put in that mantra: There is always hope. This too shall pass. You have to get miserable before you can get better. I hate the fact that that’s a reality, but the bottom line is you will not change until being who you are is too uncomfortable. I didn’t change until it reached the point where I was depressed all the time, until it reached the point where I was having nightmares and panic attacks, and it was starting to interfere with my ability to function in my daytime world. And to do what I needed to do for my jobs, I knew something had to change. And that something had to be me. I want to wave a magic wand and make everything all better. I don’t want there to ever be another Reed or another Bill or another Jeff or another JP, but I don’t have that power. All I have is my story, to let you know this is what I went through, and this is how I got through it. I got through it by being stubborn. I got through it by reminding myself over and over and over, it’s not always going to be this way. and you feel like your lyin’ when you say that, because really it’s the only way it’s been for what feels like my entire life, how can it not always be this way. I’ve proven it to myself. I am not the person I was 30 years ago. I don’t have the flashbacks and the panic attacks, the nightmares. I don’t have those depressions. I don’t have those trigger incidents like I used to. My resilience is not something that I occasionally notice. It’s part of who I am, because I was able to hang on. And I’ve gotta be honest with you. As I say this stuff, I feel like I am shortchanging, or judging or criticizing those people who were not able to hang on, and that is not my intent. JP, Jeff, Bill, Reed...they did the absolute best they knew how to do. They held on for as long as they could, and there comes a time when you just can’t. And if there’s nobody around to catch you when you fall, then you fall. I hope we all have somebody to catch us when we fall. I would not still be here if people had not caught me when I fell.   Like I said last night, I don’t have any answers for this, and I’m out of words.  But I care, and I wish I could wave a magic wand to help you hang on, because others care too. About you. Because you are worth caring about. And you are worth healing.  So please hang in there, just a little longer.  Everything changes, and hope is always there, even when we can’t see it.

As a counselor who has worked with families and clients on the Autism Spectrum for over 18 years, I have seen it go from a disorder that people have no clue what it is to almost every person knowing at least one person they are close to having it or being affected by it. One would think seeing the Autism rates jumping from 1/10,000 in 2000 to 1/59 in 2018 would make voters demand their politicians take action in making sure every American has access to quality treatment…but I guess most of us didn’t get the message and instead are too pre-occupied with border walls and whether Donald Trump is a racist. The sad truth is that while people privately will express concern about autism and whether their child will be born with it, politically we seem to get caught up in the tabloid BS that out media and politicians are peddling. The sad truth is that quality early intervention therapy can cost upwards of $60,000 a year and much of that is not covered by your insurance and partially covered by your state Medicaid programs. Schools have an additional cost of $18,000 per student per year who are on the spectrum and if they already are short staffed now when the autism rates were 1/500, imagine what it will be like in 10 years when babies born today at the 1/59 rate enter the school system. If you aren’t scared yet, most coverage only covers to age 7, and ask any parents of a child on the spectrum what it is like having a teenager on the spectrum and see what the costs for therapy, tutoring or even worse a private therapeutic school that will cost upwards of $50,000 a year. What about the adult autistic children who will need care much beyond the college years? How does that work on a fixed retirement income? You can try an long term care community but places like 29 Acres in Texas are charging $60,000 per year for long term care. The truth is that not only is our government totally neglecting this important issue, they have no idea how in trouble school districts will be in a few years or how much the social security disability budget is going to explode. How do I know? Because I help my clients on the spectrum in their 20’s get on SSDI and sometimes its the only way to help them and their parents support their children for basic needs like rent.We have a huge problem on our hands and to make matter worse we have private clinicians and organizations completely taking advantage of the situation and gouging families for insane costs. They have basically made it to where there is tiered care for autistic clients and their families where only the wealthy can get the care that is needed. The schools and programs pat themselves on the backs and have elaborate galas and fundraisers where they pat themselves on the backs for offering free or discounted tuition for a few clients while 85% of their clients/residents are wealthy individuals who pay fill rate and they make a killing, often opening up multiple locations across the country. Where is our government in policing this matter? They step in during hurricane emergencies to make sure no one is price gouging during an emergency so why aren’t they stepping up here? We talk about curing autism now but what about treating autism now? Oh wait that’s right….it’s treating autism now for the rich. I just don’t know how these people sleep at night…very comfortably I suppose. To dive into this topic I am joined by my good friend Bill Reed of the Arm Chair QB Blog and Ginger the Female Voice of The Radical Center. The last post was titled incorrectly as about SPEY lines. This podcast is actually about lining SWITCH rods. We have had a lot of questions emailed to us and posted on our wall on Facebook regarding how to properly line a switch rod. It's complicated and confuses even those of us who do this for a living. For this podcast, Tom brought in one of the most knowledgeable people in the industry on the subject, Bill Reed, Director of Wholesale for The Orvis Company and our resident line expert. Get a pen and paper and be ready to take notes, there is a TON of information in this podcast.
