In this episode, Klyn Elsbury talks about her lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. She explains the hardships of being the outcast in school due to her absence in the classroom which, was a direct cause of continuous hospitalizations. However, the undying support and love her family gave her inspired her to be as active as possible in order for her illness not to paralyze her lungs. Unfortunately, her warrior spirit came to a halt when she turned 19, after she dropped out of college she began to support herself, and then lost it all as a cause of bad habits. Left with no other option Klyn moved out to San Diego to face numerous years of hardship, poverty, and worst of all, being classified as legally disabled. That is until a miracle happened, that changed the trajectory of her life for the better. Her lifelong journey of seeking a cure to her illness is genuinely inspirational and outright uncommon. She is now the author of a book called, “I am the untold story of success” which dives deep into her journey with cystic fibrosis and how she overcame complications that made life extremely difficult to navigate.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to a neuroscience expert, writer and author living with Cystic Fibrosis. Born with the genetic disorder, this week’s guest had no ordinary childhood. Living in 23 different cities before the age of 18 as her family struggled to finance her illness, she became an incredibly imaginative kid, a trait that would soon become the foundation blocks to her future career success. Being fired from a job in recruitment due to multiple hospitalisations, the ambitious entrepreneur found herself on social security disability - little did she know at the time that while couch surfing off Craig’s List, she had reached the beginning of her pivotal adventure. Surviving well past her estimated life expectancy of 14, now in her thirties, she hasn’t let anything hold her down. Writing a book from the hospital bed, speaking on stages across the US and becoming an expert in the field of neurolinguistic programming, here’s what it’s like to be Klyn Elsbury. Do you feel stuck in your work or even in your life? This show is all about how to get unstuck and to unlock more of your potential even when you’re battling personal hardships. Today’s guest discusses how you can take your most complex thoughts and turn them into action.   Klyn Elsbury was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system. Klyn was told she would not survive beyond 14 years old and spent most of her life going in and out of hospitals. Klyn knew she had to be smart with the time she had and so today, as she hits her 30’s, she is a Keynote Speaker, Bestselling Author, and the host of the Neuroscience for Sales Success podcast.   Klyn would spend anywhere from two to six months in a hospital every year. It was her illness that drove her to find more effective systems to help her grow and scale her business. Remember, if you are feeling like you can’t step away for a week or a few days, have Klyn be your reminder that yes, you can make things much more efficient!   When Klyn first heard of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), she thought it was a bunch of woo-woo and was extremely skeptical at how well it would work. She started off trying to find flaws within the system, but as she dug deeper into it, the more she realized it really does work. This led her down the path of getting her master’s in NLP.   How do we move from thought to action? We often think it’s a motivational problem, but it’s not. It’s what happens before you become motivated that gets you excited to stop procrastinating and do that thing. Think of what happened just before you became ridiculously motivated. What were you experiencing? Curiosity? Anger? Anxiety? Those are the emotions you want to focus on so that you can kick procrastination in the butt and turn your dreams into real action steps.   Interview Links: Missklyn.com   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? This week on NLP For Entrepreneurs hosted by Klyn Elsbury how to build trust, prioritize your ideas & keep your word I believe the most successful entrepreneurs and sales people understand that when they make plans or have an idea - they act on it. We talk all the time on NLP for Entrepreneurs that the biggest difference between those who talk and those are successful is how much they walk what they talk... follow me? In San Diego, there's something known as the "flake factor". So many people set a plan to meet up and cancel last minute or no show. I don't think it's necessarily that we are surrounded by flakes who aren't acting with integrity- it's more we don't understand the level of commitment to meet. Additionally, when you have a call with a good coach and ideas come up - you need to understand how to prioritize those ideas into levels to decipher what to act on and what to forget about or postpone. Everything should be categorized as a commitment level - if not -it's open to interpretation and unclear expectations lead to lack of trust, communication, and can destroy relationships with others and yourself. Today's episode breaks down how to create a plan and know what to do with the abundance of information and tools out there- so you have a system that propels you forward instead of leaving you stuck. Klyn discusses 5 levels of commitment: 1. Idea-ish 2. Understanding why the idea is valuable 3. Creating a loose plan 4. Creating a plan with a scapegoat 5. Solid AF plan, no back down. In true Shark School style, we explain all of the different interpretations and HOW you can apply some of the methodologies and principles to your biz asap. This week on SHARK SCHOOL… When it comes to motivation- we tend to think that motivating sales teams or milestones is best done through throwing a party to recognize top performers or having a giant celebration. Another friend of mine, vp of sales for a fortune 100, celebrating crushing team goals despite a quota increase. And, I’m going to open up a bit about a personal celebration. So depending on the news I get literally any moment now, it may be cause for one heck of a celebration tonight. But should it? And here’s the contrarian viewpoint for the day: You should not celebrate anything unless the celebration is caused by a dramatic change in a system, process, or viewpoint. Klyn discusses: 1. This week on SHARK SCHOOL… Failure Is NOT Something to Strive For Scrolling Instagram today I came across a rather interesting caption. As someone with a 43 module online course on how to market and sell using social media, I naturally am keen to paying attention to peoples stories and how they leverage them for their brand. And I read this: "Formula for success: increase your rate of failure. You have to fail to be successful. Like you have to . like you have to drink water to live, you have to fail to be successful. So don’t let fear of failure hold you back because you have to fail if you want to be successful at anything. Its mandatory. Its non negotiable." Thank goodness this did not come from one of my Sharks because I would pick up the phone instantly and discuss with them how their pursuit of failure is ultimately, why they haven’t succeeded. Their model of the world, emphasized failing instead of success around systems and processes. And for that- Todays episode explores this culture we have as a society that I will affectionally call Failure (Expletive). It's a confusing concept to most at first, and yet there are those who really dive into discovering what it is and how it can be used to bring them closer to the people they love and the business they want. If you are confused at first, recognize that the confusion means you want to learn and that by owning it, you are already learning. Cuz if you can't apply this stuff, what's the point?! Here were the exercise questions: 1. Think of the last time you considered you failed. 2. Can you remember a specific time? 3. As you go back to that time, I want you to hear what you heard, see what you saw, feel what you felt in the moment you knew you failed. 4. Now, pause. Think of someone who is succeeding at exactly the thing you want to succeed it. What did they do that you did not? 5. Specifically, what did they do, how did they respond, what actions did they take, what sacrifices did they make? 6. And are you committed to doing the exact same thing? Her close call with mortality has made her ever present to the gift in each moment + given her a unique ability to unearth happiness in every moment. Join me and Klyn (live! we recorded this together on the road) as she walks you through four ways to find your happy right now. SHOW NOTES It's always going to be different and tough. Get over it. I know I can control the moment and how I feel about the moment. I've come to terms with my disease and when you come to terms with it, then you can focus on what you can do in the moment. I decided if this is the end I am at least going to go out fighting. Your reminder of the miracle of life is the moment you wake up each morning. Make of it what you want. What can you control in the moment? What can you do? Find the power in that. 4 Ways to Find Your Happy Now: Perceived control: Choose your thoughts + situations just like you choose the clothes out of your closet every morning. Perceived progress: Set your goal and actually do something about it everyday. Don't wait for one day because one day never comes, okay? Connectedness: Stop connecting to WiFi. Start connecting to each other.  Vision or meaning: You've got your goals. Now, bring it to a bigger purpose. There are different types of happy: Pleasure - getting flowers Passion - when you are in "your flow" Purpose - bigger cause Chase your purpose. Everything else will follow. Seeking your purpose? Don't just reflect ACT. MOVE. DO.  Did you enjoy hearing John talk to a guest in person? Check out episode 1 with Brian Buffini. Or, episode 89 with Coach Kath Bresnahan.  KLYN ELSBURY'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Compound Effect, Darin Hardy. My main takeaway: Where you are heading right now will continue to snow ball through your entire life. If you don't like the trajectory of the life in which you are heading, change it right now. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Owning your power, appreciating it and not being afraid to use it. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be?  I'm not going back in. I don't care. I don't need of it. None of it matters. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? John O'Leary 2.0. Let's do it! 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? When someone loves you enough to tell you you are messing up so you can come out stronger on the other side.  6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? You are more capable than you have any clue. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? And she's still laughing. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. See you here next Thursday! Klyn Elsbury is CEO of Landmark Makers, a best-selling author, and a keynote presenter focused on helping leaders understand the principles on how to live ALL IN. Her focus is on teaching others how to create a strong vision, how to develop core habits centered around that vision, and how to give and receive unconditional love by authentic communication. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Klyn defied expectations by not only taking Zumba classes despite her cystic fibrosis but by becoming a Zumba instructor as well The power of persistence seen through Klyn’s story of being denied insurance coverage for a lifesaving drug costing $259,000 and calling everyone in media until her message was shared by PBS and then later by Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News Living authentically, loving deeply, and to recognizing adversity as an advantage Overcoming obstacles and achieving great things in spite of the obstacles in your path How accepting that we all have something evens the playing field, no matter what your particular obstacle happens to be Adversity as an advantage: Why that resonates so much with Klyn and how you can turn adversity into advantages in your own life and business How Klyn believed she had a story to tell but didn’t think others would be inspired by it, so she set out to find famous people, celebrities, and influencers with stories about overcoming adversity and her friend and editor convinced her that her story was the one she needed to tell – and that people need to hear Why the biggest problems people face isn’t in their businesses, but their failure to understand their own true potential Klyn’s belief that if you’re only inspired for 48 hours but you do something in that time that brings about drastic improvements in your life, then it was 48 hours well spent Ways to contact Klyn: LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/advanceyourcareer Facebook: www.facebook.com/iammissklyn Website: www.missklyn.com/ Instagram: @klynelsbury Book: "I AM _____: The Untold Story of Success"

When Klyn Elsbury was born, she was diagnosed with a terminal genetic condition, Cystic Fibrosis and was given a life expectancy of 14 years old.  Growing up, she was told that more than likely she wouldn't survive past high school, even less likely to survive past college, and of course the likelihood of owning her own business with excessive hospitalizations, diminishing health, etc would be nearly impossible.  Her story has been featured on several other podcasts and on US Nightly News w Lester Holt, in part, because she has proven that with the right attitude and perseverance, you can be successful in anything in life (from owning a business to being comfortable with knowing every day you may not live to see tomorrow). She is the best-selling author of “I AM _: The Untold Story of Success” a blend of raw emotion and inspiring wisdom that draws a parallel between what it means to live as if every day is your last and what it means to create a highly impactful legacy through entrepreneurship and athleticism.  She currently lives in California with the love of her life. Klyn Elsbury is the author of I Am _____: The Untold Story of Success and co-founder of Landmark Makers. Klyn got the idea for her book when she was sitting in her hospital bed struggling with cystic fibrosis. She had lost most of her lung function and as she was laying there, she decided that instead of watching TV she was going to get on LinkedIn and reach out to some amazing people. That led to her book, which is a series of mindsets, events, and stories that anyone can use to hit their next level of success, whatever that means for them. On this inspiring episode, Klyn shares some of the lessons she learned from the people she interviewed and from her own life experiences, including why it's important to go all in in life and that there is advantage in adversity.

She's written a bestselling book, taught a Zumba class, runs a recruiting firm and perhaps most incredibly has done ALL of these things while battling Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs. Warriors, we often forget the time we have on this earth is limited. We don't all live life on a day to day basis, doing exactly what we want to do, all while pursuing our dreams. We say we can tomorrow, or take advantage of the idea that tomorrow will offer us the same opportunities we had today. Let's not wait. Kyln Elsbury joins us to remind us that the time is now. Kyln Elsbury is the co-owner of Landmark Makers, a high class recruiting services firm, and an exceptional and inspiring entrepreneur. In 2014 after being forced to quit her professional career in recruiting due to excessive hospitalization, with complications of cystic fibrosis, Kyln was confined to a wheelchair, with her lungs working at only 40%. After one hospital stay in particular, Kyln decided to take a 6 week road trip across the country, to visit relatives and friends she was not sure she would be able to see again. From these experiences she began to write her book, “I am: The Untold Story of Success,” which focusses on what it means to live as if every day is your last, and what it means to create a highly impactful legacy. WARRIOR OF DISMISSAL “Everything is how you interpret it” -Klyn Elsbury Highlights - Kyln see's her story as she feels in the blank, just like everybody else can. “I am ___, the Untold Story of Success.” We know our lives through the vision that we see it. If you're waking up with a negative attitude, you made choices along the way to get you there. You can make opposite choices to get you where you want to go. Your attitude is a choice. You have to make a conscious choice over your attitude. You can't deny the power of mindset in the law of attraction Holding ego meetings can be essential to future growth. Admit when you're wrong. Humility actually improves your self esteem. It makes you feel better as a person for being able to own up to your wrongs. We live under a false premise that we have all the time in the world.
