Send us a textGothic horror from Italian master, Mario Bava! A small village is cursed by the ghost of a young child, who just so happens to be causing a number of deaths. Operazione Paura, Operation Fear, Die toten Augen des Dr. Dracula, Curse of the Living Dead, Don't Walk in the Park? None of those titles feel like a good fit for this movie, and neither does Kill, Baby...Kill! (1966), but I guess we'll just go with that one.

Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and A Bay of Blood (1971) There are films by certain directors that are truly iconic—classics of the genre we sometimes assume everyone has already seen. But it's easy to forget that, right now, there are fans just beginning their journey into horror. Whether due to age or a newfound curiosity, they're taking their first steps into the genre. For those unfamiliar with him, we'd like to introduce one of horror's true maestros: Mario Bava. And for those already acquainted with his work, maybe it's time for a revisit—to once again be stunned by what he brings to the screen. If it's been a few years, you may find yourself seeing things in a whole new way. That's one of the beautiful things about cinema. The three films we've chosen highlight important parts of Bava's career and show how his work helped shape entire subgenres—from gothic horror to giallo to the slasher film. Whether you're discovering him for the first time or coming back for a fresh look, these films are a perfect place to begin. One quick correction: Edgar Wallace was a British writer, not American. Films mentioned in this episode: Baron Blood (1972), A Bay of Blood (1971), Black Sabbath (1963), Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959), The Church (1989), Creature with the Blue Hand (1967), Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Danger: Diabolik (1968), The Day the Sky Exploded (1958), Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Death Walks in High Heels (1971), Deep Red (1975), The Demon (1982), Demons (1985), Django Kill…If You Live, Shoot! (1967), Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs (1966), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932), Erik the Conqueror (1961), Eyeball (1975), The Four of the Apocalypse (1975), Frankenstein '80 (1972), Frankenstein Island (1981), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th (1981), The Giant of Marathon (1959), The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963), The Great Silence (1968), Hatchet for a Honeymoon (1970), Hercules in the Haunted World (1961), Horror of Dracula (1958), Inferno (1980), I Vampiri (1957), Knives of the Avenger (1966), Long Hair of Death (1964), Night Child (1975), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Planet of the Vampires (1965), Psycho (1960), She (1965), Shock (1977), Suspiria (1977), Thunderball (1965), The Toolbox Murders (1978), Torso (1973), The Whip and the Body (1963), Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)

Devin & James are back in the Den to bid a final "ciao" to the TOUR OF ITALY series with a look at the violent world of POLIZIOTTESCHI movies! (or Eurocrime, for the pronunciation challenged.) Italy had a special touch with crime thrillers during their politically tumultuous "Years of Lead," and we go over some of the genre's highest points, starting with Enzo G. Castellari's HIGH CRIME (1973), starring Franco Nero, and Franco Nero's mustache. We follow that with Lucio Fulci's only crime film, the gloriously bloody CONTRABAND (1980). Then we get into the sticky details around the release of Mario Bava's underseen and underrated RABID DOGS/KIDNAPPED, and why two different cuts of this movie were finally released over 20 years after the movie was shot and abandoned in 1974. We follow that with some fun in Umberto Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST (1977), which matched up 3 of the genre's most iconic stars (Milian, Merli, & Saxon). Finally, we cover the influential second entry of Fernando Di Leo's "Milieu Trilogy," THE ITALIAN CONNECTION (1972), where actor Mario Adorf outshines hitmen Henry Silva and Woody Strode to give the most heart-pounding and heartbreaking pimp performance we've ever seen. We're sad to finally be leaving Italy behind (for now), but we closed out with some of our favorite movies ever committed to celluloid. Buckle in and hold on for some off-the-wall Italian mayhem.

Okay, seriously—what is going on with *The Rotten Horror Picture Show* lately? First, Clay and Amanda talk about *House of Wax*. Then they dive into *Tourist Trap*, which is basically *House of Wax* but somehow weirder. THEN they spend their Patreon episode talking about the remake of House of Wax, which is also kind of a remake of Tourist Trap. And now? Now, when they SHOULD be discussing The Others, they're going off script to discuss Blood and Black Lace, Mario Bava's Giallo classic… and wouldn't you know it, this one's packed with mannequins too! Why? Why do we keep doing this?! Look, I get it—mannequins, wax figures, lifeless-yet-human-shaped things add to the eerie atmosphere. And *Blood and Black Lace* is a stylish, brutal murder mystery full of shadowy figures, high-fashion horror, and, yes, mannequins posed in unsettling ways. It's one of the defining films of the Giallo genre, setting the stage for all the masked killers and elaborate murder sequences that would come after. Clay and Amanda are about to break it all down—the stunning cinematography, the iconic score, and how Bava turned a glamorous fashion house into a place of pure terror. But I have to ask… why do horror movies love mannequins so much? They're not alive, but they *almost* look like they could be. Their empty eyes follow you. They stand there, silent, waiting. And somehow, *somehow*, this podcast keeps circling back to them like it's some kind of cruel joke. So, if you're brave enough to stare into the cold, plastic void, join Clay and Amanda for their deep dive into *Blood and Black Lace*. As for me, I'll be listening with my back against the wall, just to make sure nothing *moves* behind me. And, for the love of all that is holy, can we please pick a movie next time that doesn't involve mannequins?!

Mario Bava is a legend, an icon both as a director and as a special effects artist, but he didn't work in science fiction very often. So when he did, is it any real surprise that he made a movie that put its stamp on everything from 'Alien' to 'Event Horizon'? Join HPH for a deep dive into his cult classic, the low-budget but immensely clever movie 'Planet of the Vampires'! (We'll even explain why it has that title.)

We start with the doomed visitors to Mario Bava's PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES, a still underappreciated film that inspired a generation of Sci-Fi writers and directors. We then swing into more action with the utterly bizarre, early body horror, Antonio Margheriti's WILD, WILD PLANET (it's wild enough to deserve it twice in the title). Then we take off for a galaxy far, far away-ish with Luigi Cozzi's Star Wars wannabe, STARCRASH. Finally, we follow up with more Luigi Cozzi with the (occasionally) explosive CONTAMINATION. Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast, where every week I recommend four films for you to rent from the video store this week. Today, we're diving into the world of classic horror anthologies. These are films that tell several stories within one, often with a framing device that ties everything together. If you're a fan of short, chilling tales, this episode is for you. First up is Dead of Night from 1945. This British film is one of the earliest horror anthologies and remains highly influential. It features five stories, all connected by a group of strangers who meet at a country house and realize they've all been having strange dreams. It's one of the first films to introduce the now-classic “ventriloquist dummy” horror trope, with a segment that stands out as one of the creepiest of the film. Directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Federico Fellini have praised Dead of Night for its surreal and unsettling atmosphere.Next, we have Black Sabbath, a 1963 Italian horror anthology directed by Mario Bava. It's made up of three stories, and depending on which version you watch, the order of those stories might change. Boris Karloff, famous for his role as Frankenstein's monster, appears in the third story and also introduces each segment. Bava's use of color in this film is incredible, especially in “The Wurdalak,” a tale about vampires, which Karloff stars in. Bava's visual style and ability to create mood really shine here, and the film is often credited with helping to shape Italian horror. The third recommendation is Kwaidan from 1964, a Japanese anthology directed by Masaki Kobayashi. The film adapts four traditional Japanese ghost stories, each with a unique, haunting style. It's a slow-burn film, with gorgeous set design and a painterly use of color, especially in the story “The Woman of the Snow.” Kobayashi originally intended for the film to be much longer, but the studio asked him to cut it down, so there's even more footage that exists beyond the version most people know. Kwaidan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, which isn't typical for horror movies, especially one with such a dreamlike, experimental approach. Finally, there's The House That Dripped Blood from 1971. This British anthology was produced by Amicus Productions, a studio known for its anthology films, and it's one of their best. The movie features four stories tied together by a detective investigating mysterious deaths at a house. Each tale explores different horror subgenres, from vampires to haunted waxworks. It stars some familiar faces like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, who were regulars in British horror films of the era. The script was written by Robert Bloch, who's probably best known for writing Psycho, so you know the storytelling is solid. These four films are perfect examples of how diverse the anthology format can be, especially within the horror genre. They span different decades, countries, and styles, but all manage to deliver a range of creepy, atmospheric stories in one package. If you haven't explored horror anthologies before, these films are a great starting point. Thanks for listening to The Video Store Podcast. Be sure to check out these films, and I'll be back next week with more recommendations. This is a public episode. This week Barry, Brian, Dave and Tod take a look at two films nearly old enough to collect Social Security. Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) is an often mentioned childhood favorite of Dave's which claims to be “Scientifically Authentic.” Which might be credible had the film been made in 1864. On the plus side, it has Adam West (briefly) and a monkey in a space suit, so how bad can it be? An automated distress beacon draws an unsuspecting ship to a barren planet. The crew find a derelict spacecraft once piloted by gigantic beings. And ultimately fall prey to creatures seeking host bodies. Several plot elements of Brian's suggestion, Planet of The Vampires (1965) will seem familiar. The low budget Italian film, directed by the legendary Mario Bava, is surprisingly entertaining despite, SPOILER having no actual vampires. There's also the usual Random Topics, and a round of What's in the Box. Thanks for listening!

Blood and Black Rum Podcast - A Cult Film / Horror Podcast

We're kicking off the Halloween season this year with our new series, Saxon Samhain, where we take a look at various John Saxon horror movies! First up is The Evil Eye, which gets confusing because this Mario Bava film has two versions. We're specifically talking about the American AIP version that features a different ending, different score, and a couple of edits; we also do talk a little about the Italian version The Girl Who Knew Too Much. On the Saxony scale, this one scores a 4. Listen on to find out what we thought! We're also drinking Athletic Brewing's non-alcoholic Oktoberfest. Approximate timeline 0:00-13:00 Intro 13:00-20:00 Beer talk 20:00-end The Evil Eye More Saxon soon, but up next is our 300th episode! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bloodandblackrum/support

Movie Meltdown - Episode 630  (For our Patreon "Horror Club") The Horror Club is back with Mario Bava's giallo classic - Blood and Black Lace. And as we narrow down where we want to put our secret bookcase/door, we also bring up… When Evil Lurks, The Exorcist, Shaun of the Dead, The Ninth Configuration, Dick Tracy, her hair, her makeup, the eyeliner, the outfits, I was like - I love her, I wanna look like you, Frankenstein in every room, Peter Lorre, sitting in the dark, messing with mom's purse, the question of the masked killer, whoever gets possessed gets… gross, cinematography, demon hunters, working at night, being a sex maniac, Jersey Shore meets fancy Italian architecture, Edgar Wright, it was gnarly, luckily they didn't base World War II on a fashion show, affordable reproductive rights, epileptic or possessed by a demon, the third act monologue, if you came to this movie for dialogue, being a DJ, Cameron Mitchell, gorgeous in the same way, the pettiness of Warren Beatty and a faceless supernatural entity the likes of which we have never seen. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for "Blood and Black Lace", so go watch the movie before you listen. “It's like the Melrose Place of 60s Italy.”
