When FreedaSol tells you it is her funkiest mix yet, it is gonna be fun. Right out of the gate the tracks are modern funk with elements plucked from dance music history. Once the vibe is ignited there is no time wasted to push on through a number of styles; yes its even got soul. The vocals come and go in full presentation and snippets giving the set plenty of voice. She has performed with KiNK, Justin Martin, Maya Jane Coles, Tale of Us, Patrice Baumel, Marbs and Evan Casey of Desert Hearts, Rinzen, Dance Spirit, Eskuche, Marques Wyatt, Tycho, KMLN, Sabo, Justin Jay, Hoj, Kevin Knapp, Shiba San, Joeski and more. The life story of Marques Wyatt flows with a certain sense of destiny. Around every turn, there seems to be some guide or signpost revealing the way forward. What force could truly architect the design of our lives? His story, as with all our stories, begs that question. In the world of House Music, Marques is iconic...a legendary DJ who was among the very first to rock the dance floors in the Los Angeles House scene. His life's history is intertwined with the history of House. On a summer evening in July, the two of us sat down on my back porch and recorded this conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Warning: This episode contains a lot of great music. If you like house music, you owe Louie Vega a debt of gratitude. As a DJ, remixer, producer, label head, and as one half of Masters at Work, Louie has had a big hand in shaping what the world listens to and dances to over the last 30+ years. With a string of Grammy nominations (and a win!), #1 records all over the world, and a long list of top DJs and artists he's influenced, inspired, and helped, few people have left such an indelible mark on culture. The most striking thing about Louie is his work ethic and painstaking attention to detail. He's in it to win it and puts the work in. We also learn how he balances that preparedness with improvisation and how he makes his family work (including working with his wife). Enjoy! 2017 Dec Rebooting from the Deep End (Pt. 1 Taste this Love) “The news of my passing was greatly exaggerated”. Borrowing from Oscar Wilde or (Mark Twain who knows?) House is a Journey 2.0! Reboot.. Had to focus on more important issues for a while. Though I did play live and mixed at parties, I could not be bothered with tweaking and publishing. I have a few live raw sets on my drive, which will eventually be uploaded. I even have an uploaded yet unpublished set from April 2017, cannot remember why I failed to publish... I shall catch up shortly therefore expect lots of (hopefully half decent) music before the year end. Interesting that I eventually got going with Deep House, I was listening to the tunes of a friend of mine German-Greek producer, Petros Mitolis, and felt like… yeah, it is now TIME! House is a Journey is .. resurfacing! Philakia Petros! Playlist 2017 There's No Time To Waste (Original Mix). Scott Diaz, Max Footwork 2015 Tell Her (Original Mix). Gian Castro, also known as Goodjob or Goodjob Gian, is a California DJ/producer who keeps his heart in the underground culture of house and techno, and doesn't hesitate to take his audience on an abstract journey through variations of those genres and many more styles of music. Being of South American descent, he was immersed into a colorful world of percussive rhythms, Andean Melodies, Afro-Peruvian Folk, as well as Salsa Music almost since birth. That, along with growing up during Hip-Hop’s Hey Day and witnessing the evolution of house and techno, has made him a well-versed artist. That influence and craftsmanship really shows during his performances. Having played alongside artists such as DJ Dan, DJ Three, Doc Martin, Marques Wyatt, and Christian Martin of Dirtybird Records, has really helped his career flourish, gaining him recognition and bookings all over California and even overseas. Shark Faicol, a talented DJ and musician (drums & piano) that is very close to our operation delivers international house sounds on Beats of All-Nations Radio. He is one-half of Mabuhay Miles (a collab with Porchlite), a member of The Compound and gets recurring spins at the GetDownOC. He’s shared stages with Mark Farina, Nic Fanciulli, Marques Wyatt, Doc Martin, Joeski, Sonny Fodera, and Aeroplane, to name a few, and he’s prepping to open for Miguel Migs tonight in Newport Beach at Focus OC.“This mix features selected music from: Todd Edwards, J Letto, Tom Misch, Voyeur, Konstantin Sibold, Detroit Swindle, I tried covering a lot of ground in this mix. Really went for a more international sound spanning from Chicago, Africa, Amsterdam, and more. Mix starts with slower tempo house, groovy looped based tracks. Later we explore quicker tempos that feature tracks with horns, vocals and even some classic house. Basically tried to encapsulate the funk, but place it in a house music type sensibility." This week’s guest is Marques Wyatt. In this episode you will find snippets of music from Aerosmith, Loosid, FKA Twigs, Depeche Mode, and Jesse Saunders. Not only is Marques the godfather of LA’s deep house scene, his lineage traces directly to the great Frankie Knuckles, who mentored Marques after meeting him in a club in New York in the 1980s. From those auspicious beginnings, Marques went on to pioneer some of Los Angeles's most important clubs, including Brass, Does Your Mama Know, and most recently, Deep, exposing fans to groundbreaking acts such as Brand New Heavies, Louie Vega, and Jamiroquai. He’s a DJ’s DJ, a house music purist who integrates his love for yoga and his spiritual quest into his effort to move people on the dance floor. In our interview, we discuss the highs and lows of club promotion, the way house music has changed over the years, and meeting Paris Hilton. That’s the second Paris Hilton story on Rebel Radio, by the way! This dude has seen some major changes over the years, and has made it a mission in life to keep the integrity of the music he loves. At the same time, he has words for the haters: “What does it matter to you at the end of the day? That’s their choice. People can spend their money however they want to spend it.” Find his Soundcloud channel here: https://soundcloud.com/marques-wyatt Check out what EDM.COM has to say here: http://edm.com/articles/2015-07-08/rebel-radio-ep4-marques-wyatt
This week's RIPEcast features a tag set from Pink Mammoth residents Jonathan Will and Gravity, live from Breakfast of Champions 2014. Here's what they have to say: "We are both super excited to have closed out our 4th Breakfast of Champions together. Rob Garza had just hoped of the decks, taking us an eclectic journey. We aimed to keep the feeling going strong with bits of funk, glazed with some grit; ending on a high, sedimental note. We hope you enjoy the mix and look forward to what 2014 will bring!" - Jonathan Will & Gravity (pinkmammoth.org) About Jonathan Will: Jonathan Will is a resident DJ, podcast boss, and impresario for San Francisco’s legendary house crew Pink Mammoth, as well as an up-and-coming producer for Loöq Records. He loves to make people FEAL on the dance floors by taking them through a journey inward of beauty and emotion, as well as provoking momentous booty-shaking extroversion. His style is eclectic, expressive and dance floor-centric. His sets convey a full range of house music including full-body notes of tech, deep house; seductive aromas of electro-pop, underground jazz and intrigue; and including a well balanced, lingering finish of funk and lure. He has played alongside the likes of Lee Burridge, BLOND:ISH, Jimpster, Art Department, Soul Clap, Justin Martin, DJ T, Worthy, Marques Wyatt, Fred Everything, Spirit Catcher, Audiofly (Luca Saporito), M.A.N.D.Y. (Philip Jung) Miguel Migs and The Martinez Brothers. He has performed at almost every notable club, festival and underground in the SF- Bay area including: Monarch, Mighty, The ENDUP, Supperclub, Triple Crown, Ruby Sky, Wish, Temple, Anu, Public Works, The Phoenix Hotel, Monroe, How Weird, Lovefest, Superhero St Fair, Decompression, Body & Soul, Robot Heart; and around the world in Miami (WMC), Minneapolis, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, Amsterdam, Japan and Mexico, as well as the much loved, annual Pink Mammoth parties at BRC, Burning Man. Currently, he has been busy in the studios with production. In 2012 he did a remix for AND()'s “Akuma H23” on Looq records. The release was well received and even peaked to #35 in its category on Beatport. Then he followed with a strong, lush summer deep house remix of Momu's “ComingUp” which got re-released on Loöq's Best 12 of 2012. He latest remix of Momu’s “Rising” which debued on Pink Mammoth's Sunrise set on Robot Heart is already getting much DJ support and praise. http://soundcloud.com/jonathan-w http://facebook.com/Jonathan.Will.dj About Gravity: The Chicago area music scene provided the perfect backdrop for the early days of Rob Adelmann’s (aka DJ Gravity) funky, eclectic influences. Yet despite growing up in the birthplace of house music, Rob’s first real exposure to the genre came in 1997, while living in London. The thriving underground scene of UK’s capital sucked him in and left a lasting impression. In 1999, while living in Colorado, Rob bought turntables and began teaching himself the art of mixing, recalling advice he picked up from friends in London. Within 6 months he found himself playing bars and clubs in Colorado. While living in Boulder, Rob had the good fortune of meeting future Pink Mammoth cofounder Ryel K, who invited him to camp and DJ at Pink Mammoth during Burning Man 2005. The Burning Man culture and his experience DJing there had such a profound effect that he was inspired to move to San Francisco shortly after. Once in SF, Rob quickly became an integral part of Pink Mammoth’s foundation. Over the last six years Rob has DJed every Pink Mammoth event in venues all over SF, as well as parties throughout North America, including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Denver and Calgary. In addition to playing headlining sets, Rob has had the opportunity to share the decks with Lee Burridge, Marques Wyatt, Collette, Jimpster, Spirit Catcher, Justin Martin, Random Soul, Hed Kandi, Miguel Migs, AstroGlyde, DJ T and The Martinez Brothers. Although rooted in funky and deep house, Rob’s sound is not easily defined. Whether playing an uplifting daytime party, epic sunset/sunrise set, or a peak time nightclub slot, his main source of inspiration comes from the dancefloor. Rather than sticking to a plan or sub-genre of house, Rob’s sets are based on reading the crowd and creating an irresistible vibe and unforgettable experience. http://www.pinkmammoth.org/participants/gravity/#sthash.QxSRQjM4.dpuf
How about we kick the year off right with some high quality deep house music? This is Alex Callejo's second featured mix on our radio program, the first one being all the way back in 2010. Since then, we've been fervently listening to his spiritually restitutive podcast Simply Deep. Like many Chicago artists, Alex has been influenced by house music as far back as the 80's. Growing up, mixing has always been a leisurely activity used to enjoy dance music from all over the world. "I've had the opportunity to DJ various venues throughout Chicago and the Philippines, and I've had the honor to make DJ appearances on various internet radio stations throughout the world," says the co-founder for HOUSEJUNKYZ and DEEPHOUSVIBES. His current project is Simply Deep. "Today, mixing continues to be a source of enjoyment and relaxation for me," says Alex. "Why I continues to mix? Simply put it's fun, I love the music, so why not?" Alex's influences over the decades have ranged from Hot Mix 5, Mark Grant, Marques Wyatt, Ron Carroll, Mark Farina, Steve Silk Hurly, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Pierre, Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Lil Louis, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, MAW, Ibadan, David Mancuso, Francois K, Glenn Underground, Larry Levan, Ron Trent, 3 degrees, Dennis Ferrer, Kerri Chandler, Jojo Flores, Abicah Soul, Atjazz, Osunlade, and Karizma. Those of us who were in Manila back in 2006 may remember Alex's performance at MyHOUSE, the weekly party we organized at M Cafe. We can only hope for a repeat of that really soon (it's been 7 years Alex!) Here's the track-list to this particularly therapeutic mix by Alex called Love, Life, and Musica that we can only guess was inspired by his recent trip to Mexico to attend the 2012 Mi Casa Holiday. 1) Marlon D feat Ultra Nate (Jose Carretas Mix) - "God's Message" 2) Kemetic Just (DJ Spinna's Galactic Soul) - "I Got Life" 3) Jimpster - "Can't Stop Loving You" 4) Julian Gomes28 feat. Bobby - "Love Song" 5) Jask feat. Jocie (Nikos Diamantopoulos Afro Dub) - "Dreams" 6) Nicholas - "On Your Mind" 7) Johnny Miller meets Cuebur feat. Ckenz - "Good Inside" 8) C'Roberts Walker & Paris Cesvette (NDinga Gaba Deep Sax Dub) - "Loving You In Places" 9) Ralf GUM feat. Monique Bingham - "Take Me To Love" 10) Mi Casa (Atjazz) - "La Vida" 11) Atjazz ft. Clara Hill (QB's Hot Mix) - "Sense of Life" To a fulfilling and music-filled 2013!! After a few years of completely being content with being a dusty patron of DISTRIKT and labeling it my "go to" place on the playa, I guess this year my number was up to be of service to the vibrant community you have built. I'm feeling quite blessed to have co-created such musical magic with my talented comrades to add to my Burning Man memoirs, as well as those of many others I'm certain. Looking out at that colorful sea of "DISTRIKT-ITES" was beautifully profound. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be upset at all about an invitation to come back next year;-) Thanks for making me feel right at home, great production and just overall running an air tight operation. This week we are glad to feature a mix from a long time friend and participant of Pink Mammoth, Jason Wilson. He has been known to drop all sorts of deep funkiness, and has played his own share of Pink Mammoth parties at Burning Man, the Endup as well as some celebrated, underground house parties. He's also opened up for the likes of Marques Wyatt, and even has done a few djing stints in Poland. He characterizes he sound as "mostly deep house with thick bass lines and a little bit of tech house peppered in to get the higher frequencies needed for a nice even blend of highs and lows." Here is his exclusive mix for our PM podcast, something he's been very stoked to share- and we feel the same. Enjoy!

We've been long overdue for a RIPEcast from one of our all-time favorite Burning Man camps, the legendary Pink Mammoth. On the 1s and 2s this week is Pink Mammoth resident, JDubYa (a.k.a. Jonathan Will), dropping an array of uplifting house grooves to remind us all that summer has arrived and Burning Man is only just around the corner. "For this RIPEcast mix I wanted to create a sound that reflected the summer vibe", says JDubYa, "a time where extremes can not only exist side by side, they are encouraged, even celebrated, for giving to the whole experience- like high-energy nights mixed with moments of beach-side recovery; driving bass-lines are laced with snippets of smooth nostalgic vocals, horns or keys... new tech is injected with hard ol' funk, then put in a blender, mixed and served up cool with a sultry cayenne twist. We hope you savor this laid-back, spicy juxtaposition of new and old-school summer-inspired sounds. May your summer have the best of all previous summers, and yet unlike anything ever before. Enjoy!" You can catch JDubYa and the rest of the Pink Mammoth crew this coming Saturday, June 18th at Mighty in San Francisco for their official camp fundraiser. Our very own, Zach Moore, is also on the bill to help Pink Mammoth get back to the playa this year. Discounted pre-sale tickets are available right now at http://pinkmammoth.eventbrite.com.
