Send us a textThe UK winter is a good time for indoor hobbies, and like many others, my thoughts are turning to the model railway kits I have stockpiled but haven't got around to making! Instead of getting on with the job, I went to the National Exhibition Centre for the inaugural National Festival of Railway Modelling for some inspiration... organised by Warners Group Publications, who have taken over the slot from Warley model railway club. With more of a family friendly appeal, the show attracted thousands to the NEC over the weekend of November 22nd - 24th.Sharon Gregory returns with another of her motorbike ‘Railway Rideouts', this time visiting narrow gauge pioneer of preservation in mid-Wales, the Talyllyn railway. There's also a chat with Peter Waterman during visit to Chester Cathedral to see the record breaking Making Tracks layout, designed to encourage youngsters to drive the trains and attract a new audience into the historic building. Finally, fellow modellers discuss their layouts and share thoughts on various aspects of the hobby.Links to the organisations, businesses and layouts mentioned in this episode:National Festival of Model Railways (2024 ) The Wirral and North Wales Model Group -facebook pageOrganisers Warners Railway Modelling Events Children's railway book illustrator and author Pauline Hazelwood (including Welsh Pony, Alice the Little Welsh Engine etc )The Military Railway Study Group Islinglass Models - CAD and 3d printing servicesThe Railway Children CharityHornby Rapido Trains Talyllyn Railway - contact the youth group on ymg@talyllyn.co.ukMaking Tracks -Pete WatermanLUKR: LEGO UK Railway - LEGO Train Club - LUKRThis podcast is produced by Laura Raymond and presented by Alasdair Stewart Our 'Making Tracks' music is with kind permission of composer and musician Richard Durrant. Joko Widodo's recent trip to four African countries marked the first ever by an Indonesian head of state. The President's five-day visit took him to Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, before finishing in South Africa where he attended the meeting of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group of nations in Johannesburg. In his address to the BRICS conference Jokowi evoked the ‘spirit of Bandung' in reference to the Asia-Africa conference held in the West Java capital in 1955 and called for solidarity and cooperation between the nations of the Global South. But Indonesia stopped short of accepting an invitation to join the expanding group, which is seen as a potential challenge or alternative to Western hegemony in a changing new world order. So, what motivated such a high-level trip to Africa? Why did Jokowi choose to make such an historic visit at this stage in his presidency? What is the current state of Indonesia-Africa relations and what might Indonesia's ambitions be for its future in the continent? In this week's episode Jemma Purdey chats with Dr Christophe Dorigné-Thomson who holds a PhD in Politics from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Indonesia, and a Master in Business/Management (Grande Ecole Programme) with a major in Finance from ESSEC Business School. His research focuses on foreign policy (Indonesia, Asia-Africa, and European nations notably); political economy; external powers' engagement with Africa, Asia, and Europe, including political, economic, and defense and security approaches; and Indonesian, Asia-Africa, and Western politics. His forthcoming book, Indonesia's Engagement with Africa, will be published in 2023 by Palgrave Macmillan. In 2023, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jemma Purdey from Monash University, Tito Ambyo from RMIT and Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University. Weekend Inspiration - The Impact of an Educator and Giving Your Time to Others One of the most rewarding and impactful things one can do with their abilities is to share in their passion with others. It is statistically shown that we feel much more rewarded when we give a gift than when we receive one. As we all know I love to say that time is our most precious commodity. What if we gave people the gift of our time, our talents, our passion our love? What kind of impact could we make on the world? This all makes me think of educators and what kind of person it takes to show up day in and day out with their time, their precious time. They are dedicated individuals that have shaped who we are and what we become as well as our children. So who better to bring on this week to the CMH Pod but one of those people who truly impacted my life and thousands of others. How can you be generous with your time? This Week on our Colour Me Happy! Podcast Stacey Mortenson my band instructor who has been at it for 27 years now, but still going like she is fresh out of university! Changing lives one day at a time! I was lucky enough to be a small part in that journey! It was a nostalgic episode where we giggled and reminisced but also touched on the fact of how integral arts programming is to our youth in our current climate and how music has played a role in all our lives. Stacey shows up, she shows up for her passion, she shows up for her students, and she shows up for her community. And how fortunate she showed up for us on this podcast. This is one you will not want to miss! Stacey Mortenson-Spokes is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (with Distinction). As a French horn player and former member of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Stacey's teaching career began 26 years ago in Lloydminster, teaching Brass at Lakeland College and band and classroom music for Lloydminster Public School Division. Returning home to Saskatoon in 2006, Stacey has since taught music at Centennial Collegiate, Walter Murray Collegiate and is currently the music director at Evan Hardy Collegiate, where she directs three concert bands, three jazz bands, several jazz combos, the marching band and the choir. Stacey's bands perform often and have traveled extensively across Canada, consistently receiving top awards at festivals including the National Festival, Musicfest Canada. Through the years. Stacey has thoroughly enjoyed conducting at SBA summer camps, conducting the SBA Junior honour band, adjudicating at Springfest Canada and workshopping touring bands. Stacey founded the Saskatoon Serenade, Saskatoon's first all-female concert band of 40+ lovely musicians, in 2013. In 2016, Stacey received the Keith Mann Outstanding Canadian Band Director Award at Musicfest Canada, and in 2017, she was deeply honoured to receive the Saskatchewan Band Association's Distinguished Band Director Award. Ms. Mortenson-Spokes has always had a strong passion for music and the value of Music Education in shaping students' lives and is excited to be here this weekend sharing music with dear colleagues. Jan Komasa and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his brilliant, engaging, thoughtful new film Corpus Christi, redemption and the power of communities to reconcile and restore, the Polish Bible Belt, shame, guilt and forgiveness and the ability to healing through our relationships with others. Trailer “Komasa directs with an impressive rigor that fits the subject matter, and the incorporation of subtle ecclesiastical embellishments in the score adds to the imposing solemnity. The smoldering center of it all is Bielenia’s remarkable performance.” The Hollywood ReporterSynopsis: Recently released from a youth detention facility, a young man hiding from his past poses as a priest in a small Polish town, where the healing he provides may not be enough to resolve his own test of faith. When the whole world is at odds and all seems lost, what is left? Corpus Christi is the story of 20-year-old Daniel (Bartosz Bielenia, a major talent on the rise), who, after serving a sentence in a youth detention centre for a violent crime, must face his inner demons while searching for redemption.Running from the troubles that haunt him and hiding from his past by posing as a priest in a small Polish town, Daniel is, clandestinely, given the chance for spiritual transformation. Meanwhile, the arrival of this charismatic young preacher provides an opportunity for his divided flock to begin healing after a polarizing tragedy. But not everyone is capable of forgiveness or deliverance, and following the road to salvation can also lead one astray. As his past sins catch up to his already heavy and burdened conscience, Daniel's intentions are murky and the haven of religion may prove to be more than just a spiritual escape. Set in a country with increasingly blurred lines between church and state, Corpus Christi calls dogma and prostrating into question as Daniel's real test of faith ultimately presents itself at a moment when he's not at the altar. With thanks to Dorota lech from TIFFAbout the Director: Jan Komasa is a Polish film director, screenwriter, and producer best known for directing the films Suicide Room and Warsaw 44.
