West Indies Australia Daily, 3rd Test, Kingston Day 1: Chaos, not from ball one, but certainly from session three. We thought the day-night match might be full of action, but even then, this was a lot. In this episode, Geoff shares that his son is currently having him read through ALL of the Grimm Brother's collection of tales. And while on this journey, his son has really gotten a kick out of some tales more than others. And Geoff shares one of those tales with us; the tale of Clever Gretel. Armed with a quick wit and a desire for good food and drink (and a pair of red shoes), Gretel is ready to take on the world...or at least, her employer. Then Katrina shares a story with the same tale type (ATU 1741), that came from Sir Richard Burton's "Thousand and One Nights". Listen through to see if everyone leaves with all of their body parts still attached.

Dr. Ruth Calderon joins the podcast to reflect on the personal and intellectual journey behind her book, A Bride for One Night. She begins by discussing her background and the role her parents played in nurturing her love of Torah, as mentioned in the book's dedication. She then unpacks her approach to the Talmud, describing how she reads aggadic texts not through a religious, academic, or educational lens, but as stories that have the power to move us. This perspective shaped her call for integrating the Talmud into Israeli culture and education, regardless of religious ideology, because these texts continue to speak to the modern Israeli experience. She also shares the thinkers who helped shape her methodology. The conversation concludes with a look back at her iconic Knesset speech—what led to it, the core message she hoped to convey, and its ongoing impact.---*This episode is dedicated to the refua shelema of Sarah Miriam bat Tamar, Binyamin ben Zilpa, and our dear friend Yaakov ben Haya Sarah Malakh---• Bio: Dr. Ruth Calderon is an Israeli Talmud scholar, educator, and former member of Knesset. Born in Tel Aviv to a Sephardic father from Bulgaria and an Ashkenazi mother from Germany, she was raised in a home that bridged religious traditions and cultures. She earned her BA at Oranim Academic College and the University of Haifa, and completed her MA and PhD in Talmud at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1989, she established Israel's first secular, pluralistic, and egalitarian beit midrash, and in 1996 she founded ALMA: Home for Hebrew Culture in Tel Aviv, to bring secular Israelis closer to their textual heritage. In 2013, she was elected to the Knesset on the Yesh Atid list, where her opening speech—teaching Talmud from the Knesset floor—became a national sensation. Calderon has held fellowships at the Shalom Hartman Institute and served as a visiting professor at Harvard Law School. She has received numerous honors, including the Avi Chai Prize, the Samuel Rothberg Prize for Jewish Education, and honorary doctorates from Brandeis University, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Hebrew College. She is the author of A Bride for One Night, a collection of Talmudic tales interwoven with creative retellings, and continues to be a leading voice in the renewal of pluralistic Hebrew culture in Israel.---• Watch her infamous Knesset speech here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8nNpTf7tNo---• Welcome to JUDAISM DEMYSTIFIED: A PODCAST FOR THE PERPLEXED | Co-hosted by Benjy & Benzi | Thank you to...Super Patron: Jordan Karmily, Platinum Patron: Craig Gordon, Rod Ilian, Gold Patrons: Dovidchai Abramchayev, Lazer Cohen, Travis Krueger, Vasili Volkoff, Vasya, Silver Patrons: Ellen Fleischer, Daniel M., Rabbi Pinny Rosenthal, Fred & Antonio, Jeffrey Wasserman, and Jacob Winston! BT and Sal dive headfirst into the upcoming New York Giants season, pondering if rookie QB Jaxson Dart will be the team's savior or just another casualty of their notoriously brutal schedule, all while hilariously recounting their own "adult" adventures, including Hoff's unforgettable (and apparently PG-rated) encounter with an adult film star in Paris that somehow didn't involve any hanky-panky but did lead to her seeking rehab, and Sal's shockingly normal bar chat with a porn star he didn't even realize was a porn star until the very end. It's a wild ride of sports speculation and mildly scandalous anecdotes, proving that sometimes, the most unbelievable stories are the ones where nothing actually happens

With the release of her latest single, the soulful and sensualromance “You Know What It's Like,” Brenda Russell not only continues to pave the way for her highly anticipated upcoming album Songpainter – her first collection in 20 years – but also makes a triumphant return to the refined classic blend of adult contemporary R&B and urban jazz that launched and defined the trailblazing four and a half decade career of the multi-Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Tony nominated and Grammy winning Broadway composer for The Color Purple. “You Know What It's Like” is a co-write by the singer and the legendary Roberta Flack. When people assess Brenda's overall career, her success as an artist and with The Color Purple often overshadows the gemsshe wrote that were hits for other artists. Beyond Oleta Adams' “Get Here,” Brenda's gems have been recorded by Luther Vandross (“If Only for One Night”), Donna Summer (“Dinner with Gershwin”), Babyface, The Manhattan Transfer, Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, Mary J. Blige, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Ramsey Lewis. Her tunes have also been sampled by everyone from Janet Jackson and 2Pace to Chance the Rapper and Ariana Grande. In addition, Brenda's co-composition with Brazilian artist Ivan Lins “She Walks This Earth” was recorded by international superstar Sting for the all-star tribute album Love Affair: The Music Of Ivan Lins. Sting's inspired performance of the uniquely beautiful song earned him a Grammy Award in 2001 for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance. Brenda was recently elected into the Female Songwriters Hall of Fame. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

George Herbert's poetry often draws on the natural world, gardens, and quiet reflection: 1. “The Flower” Theme: Renewal, the seasons of the soul, joy in growth Perfect for July because: It celebrates the resurgence of beauty and hope—after cold or darkness, flowers bloom again. “Grief melts away Like snow in May, As if there were no such cold thing.” “Who would have thought my shriveled heart Could have recovered greenness? It was gone Quite underground; as flowers depart To see their mother-root, when they have blown.” “Thy garden is not bare; And I shall find once more The sweet communion with thy saints.” 2. “Easter” Yes, it's tied to the holiday, but it also celebrates light and blooming. “Rise heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praise Without delays, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise With him mayst rise.” Pair this with literal rising things—morning sun, lilies, tall foxgloves. 3. “The Pulley” Theme: Why God withholds perfect rest—so we seek Him. This works well in summer, when life feels abundant, but still leaves a twinge of longing. “When God at first made man, Having a glass of blessings standing by…” (and yet withheld rest, to draw man's soul back to God) A beautiful idea for a reflective pause among too-perfect blooms. 4. “Love (III)” Theme: Divine love, human unworthiness, and acceptance It's more theological, but gentle and moving—great for a quiet bench moment in a shady corner. “Love bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back…” “You must sit down,” says Love, “and taste my meat.” So I did sit and eat.” It pairs beautifully with the hum of bees and the hospitality of a garden. If you want a very short quote for your garden journal or bench-musing: • “Thou hast given me this herb of grace to smell and taste.” — from “Grace” • “Sweet rose, whose hue angry and brave…” — from “Virtue” • “He that in mirth and youthful jollity keeps measure, is more temperate than he that lets his sorrow flow out without check.” — from his prose The Country Parson *CraftLit's Socials* • Find everything here: https://www.linktr.ee/craftlitchannel • Join the newsletter: http://eepurl.com/2raf9 • Podcast site: http://craftlit.com • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CraftLit/ • Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/craftlit • Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/craftlit/ • TikTok podcast: https://www.tiktok.com/@craftlit • Email: heather@craftlit.com • Previous CraftLit Classics can be found here: *SUPPORT THE SHOW!* • CraftLit App Premium feed bit.ly/libsynpremiumcraftlit (only one tier available) • PATREON: https://patreon.com/craftlit (all tiers, below) ——Walter Harright - $5/mo for the same audio as on App ——Jane Eyre - $10/mo for even-month Book Parties ——Mina Harker - $15/mo for odd-month Watch Parties *All tiers and benefits are also available as* —*YouTube Channel Memberships* —*Ko-Fi* https://ko-fi.com/craftlit —*NEW* at CraftLit.com — Premium Memberships https://craftlit.com/membership-levels/ *IF you want to join a particular Book or Watch Patry but you don't want to join any of the above membership options*, please use PayPal.me/craftlit or CraftLit @ Venmo and include what you want to attend in the message field. Dahl once said that he had always wanted to write a ghost story but never had been quite been able to do so. The closest he came, in his opinion, was the story I'm about to share with you… “The Landlady.” But after reading through his own story afterward, he doesn't think he really succeeded with his effort. Nonetheless, the tale won "Best Short Story Mystery" at the 1960 Edgar Awards. So for this Thriller Thursday episode, I bring you “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate and Only Accurate For the Commercial Version)…00:00:00.000 = Show Intro, About The Story00:01:27.002 = “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl00:21:50.696 = Show CloseSOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…“The Landlady” by Roald Dahl: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p83h6nr=====(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. On 1 May 2004, the European Union went through its biggest ever enlargement. 10 countries joined including eight from the former Soviet Union's sphere of influence. For some, it was the moment the Eastern Bloc threw off the shackles of the Cold War and embraced a prosperous future in the EU. For others, it was the moment European countries lost control of their borders, leading to mass migration. Twice Italian Prime Minister, Professor Romano Prodi, was President of the European Commission at the time. He speaks to Ben Henderson.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. On Friday's episode of Real Time, host Bill Maher opened up about a surprising meeting he had last week with former President Donald Trump at the White House. Maher said the encounter was far more cordial and humorous than he ever anticipated. “You can hate me for it, but I'm not a liar. Trump was gracious and measured,” Maher said. “And why isn't that in other settings—I don't know, and I can't answer, and it's not my place to answer. I'm just telling you what I saw, and I wasn't high.” During the meeting, Maher brought along a printout of Trump's past insults directed at him. Surprisingly, Trump took it in stride and even signed it with what Maher described as “good humor.” Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the hype surrounding Maher's visit to the White House and whether the Real Time host was merely charmed by Trump the consummate politician. Plus segments on actor Michael Rapaport whining that his pro-Zionist activism has cost him work in Hollywood, Glenn Greenwald schooling Megyn Kelly on the first amendment and Bernie Sanders mysteriously dropping his talk of the threat of oligarchy during the Biden presidency. Also featuring Mike MacRae and Stef Zamorano. And a phone call from Liam Neeson!
