Adapting to a new life is never easy....On this very special episode we dive into the brand new Canadian/Korean Drama that is on VOD platforms this Friday May 23rd but is also having a one off screening this coming Friday May 31st at the Paradise Theatre here in Toronto. It's time for 'Mongrels'.The film takes us back to 1991 as a Korean family which consists of a grief stricken father, a sensitive teenage son who are all looking for their emotional footing as the process the grief of their past which cause them to move to Canada. This feature debut from writer/director Jerome Yoo has nuance beyond it's years as it allows us to engage with this story on a genuine and truly humanistic level which only helps the emotion come through as some great performances and evocative use of the BC wilderness make this genuinely hard to look away from.We talked with Jerome about the origins of the story, finding a way to let the emotional beats to play out in a fashion that feels so genuine and is rarely achieved by first time feature filmmakers and so very much more.'Mongrels' is on VOD platforms on May 23rd and is playing at the Paradise Theatre in downtown Toronto this coming May 31st
A topic that Rich suggested, simply because he has been afraid Danny would come to him and want to do a Mr. Roboto Show, or something. He needn’t have worried, however, because Paradise Theatre is the point that Danny regards as the creative peak of Styx, one of his favorite bands. The album tells the […]

Prompt the First: Did The Marvels do poorly because it's a Hero movie? My Stories model can be found at http://stories.generationalize.com/ Prompt the Second: Clothing of the 2nd turning Here's something where I was previously considering the role Clothing in the Second Turning. Prompt the Third: On the significance of the Paradise Theater https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Theatre_(Chicago) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Theatre_(album) “I've got faith in my generation" was from "Rockin' the Paradise," conceptually during the early life of the theater. A couple of singles, including "The Best of TImes" ...not clear how seriously that was meant in 1981 “Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime” Yes it's about being with someone, but also about right then being good and important The follow up album, "Kilroy Was Here" is also a concept album, with scenes set in the Paradiese Theater (or at least in A Paradise Theater, in some universe.)
Our second episode quite literally puts the lens on climate as we spotlight the 24th annual Planet in Focus International Environmental Film Festival (PIF), running from October 12th-22nd at Toronto's Paradise Theatre. PIF executive director Katherine Bruce speaks with us about the continued and growing importance of Canada's largest and longest running environmental film festival and this year's program of shorts, speakers and feature-length films. Filmmaker Deirdre Leowinata discusses her film Keepers of the Land and its themes of reclamation and reconciliation. We are also joined by Liz Marshall and Alfonso Salinas on the premiere of their powerful feature-length film, s-yéwyáw: Awaken. Speaking about this year's Planet in Focus Film Festival, Bruce says: “This year's program represents something that's broadened our definition of environment enormously over the last probably eight years, to include social justice, climate justice is racial justice … We really decided this year to create a tighter program with as many panels and speakers, filmmakers present as possible … People long for connection when they've seen these films that we present. They come away with questions. They come away with concerns. They come away with a desire to be involved, to be engaged with the issues … And that's what I think is so beneficial about always offering an audience an avenue, but also a space – a space to gather.” On her festival short, Keepers of the Land, Leowinata says: “I hope that it'll get people really excited about what's happening in Canada. Because this is just one Indigenous community in Canada, and there are so many other communities who are doing work like the Kitasoo Xai'xais Nation, and who are really moving the needle in terms of Indigenous-led Conservation, and that's what our film is about. ” Reflecting on S-YéwYáw AWAKEN, Salinas says: “We've gone on this journey where we've learned so much about each other and what happened on the film, on and off the film, it was a lot of healing. And now we get to share that story with the world, which I think is the most important thing. ” The 24th annual Planet in Focus International Film Festival, running until October 22nd in Toronto at the Paradise Theatre (1006 Bloor St West). Check out s-yéwyáw: Awaken for future viewing dates and locations. About today's guests: A part of the Planet in Focus team from 2010-2012, executive director Katherine Bruce was delighted to return to the festival in 2016. She has worked extensively in the arts sector as a producer in film, theatre and visual arts including the UK-based Cape Farewell – The cultural response to climate change as Development Director for Carbon 14: Climate is Culture in partnership with ROM Contemporary Culture. She also serves on the steering committee of CREW Toronto (Community Resilience to Extreme Weather), the advisory committee for Youth Unstoppable and on the board of the international Green Film Network. Deirdre Leowinata was born in Jakarta, Indonesia to an Irish father and a Chinese-Indonesian mother. After spending much of her childhood in an international community in Dhaka, Bangladesh, she moved to Ottawa where she did her bachelor of science in evolution, ecology, and behaviour, focusing on the impacts of climate change on butterfly ecology and physiology. Compelled by a growing need for science communication, she moved to Toronto in 2013 to complete a post-graduate program in environmental visual communication through the Royal Ontario Museum and Fleming College. Since then Deirdre has led multimedia communications and reporting for local and international organizations of various sizes. A cinematographer, writer, and director and working in music videos, shorts, and feature-length films, she continues to facilitate impactful multimedia stories that address our relationships with the natural world. Kwamanchi, Alfonso Salinas is a shíshálh Nation member and the traditional wellness coordinator for the Nation. In his role, he creates programs to practice shíshálh traditions and opportunities for those who want to pass down their gifts. Alfonso received his drum from his grandfather in 2009 to become a song carrier. A graduate of the Indigenous filmmaker program at Capilano University, Alfonso worked for the shíshálh communications department and produced the “Voices of shíshálh” TV series. Later, he became a guide in Stanley Park teaching visitors the history and traditions of Coast Salish people. Alfonso continues to document important events for the Nation today. Working with diverse teams and communities, global funders and influencers, Canadian filmmaker Liz Marshall has written, directed, produced and filmed multiple impactful documentary projects around the globe since the 1990s. Motivated by the transformative language of film and television, her award-winning work is exhibited and reviewed widely. STYX's James “JY” Young catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Crash of the Crown, a socially reflective new LP from the Chicago-born rock band. The guitarist takes us through an album that musically resonates with every era of the band, and Tommy Shaw's lyrics that show a responsibility to lead listeners in a positive direction while singing about some of the atrocities of the past few years. Young also reflects on his own playing, how his guitar furthers the songs' stories, and his early fandom for Jimi Hendrix. The two also discuss this year being the 40th anniversary of Paradise Theatre and how it still speaks to today, and how the group will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next year. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We had the pleasure of interviewing JY of STYX over the phone! The six men comprising STYX have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by averaging over 100 shows a year every year since (yes) 1999, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Founded in Chicago in 1972, STYX has the unique distinction of being the first band in rock history to have four consecutive certified multimillion-selling albums in a row: 1977’s The Grand Illusion, 1978’s Pieces of Eight, 1979’s Cornerstone, and 1981’s Paradise Theatre. STYX draws from over four decades of barn-burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a STYX set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the poignant rumination on the fleeting nature of fame in “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, STYX draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound. We want to hear from you! Public health officials confirmed coronavirus cases 35 and 36 in Ontario today, and one of the patients is a man from Toronto. For those experiencing symptoms, or with recent travel history to countries labelled as affected areas, there is a process in place for getting tested, and later this month, Michael Garron Hospital in East York will open a COVID-19 assessment centre. Plus, Osteria Rialto and Bar Biltmore make the perfect pairing for a show at Paradise Theatre.
A live show with Media Girlfriends! Partnering with CBC Podcasts, we celebrated the launch of More with Anna Maria Tremonti. A couple of weeks ago I emceed a panel at the 5point Adventure Film Festival, a 4 day event in Carbondale, Colorado chocked full of inspiring films, creative art, insightful panels, and a whole lot of playing, eating and drinking outside. As I reflect on the overall experience of the festival, I have to say it was pretty incredible. Between the amazing 5point staff, the magic of the Carbondale community, and the world class outdoor recreation, it's hard to beat. Needless to say, I highly recommend checking it out. Today on the show, I'll be sharing a live recording of the panel that I lead, which was a discussion about the 5points (or core values) that the film festival was built on - purpose, respect, commitment, humility, and balance. The aim was to explore how these values align with the panelists personal, professional, and spiritual life and growth. The panel included an eclectic mix of community leaders, film makers, adventurers and entrepreneurs. I'd like to give a proper introduction and bio to each of the 5 panels because they are each doing such exciting work. Regna Jones is the Executive Director of the 5point film festival and is no stranger to arts-based community non-profits, having led operations at Aspen Film and owned Paradise Theatre in Paonia Colorado. Although she is new to 5point, she is already a beloved member of the staff and community. Cameron Ford and Charlie Turnbull are Australian cinematographers and directors. In 2018, the debuted one of the most popular films at 5point called The Bikes of Wrath, which documents the story of 5 friends as they attempt to cycle from Oklahoma to California in honor of the famous John Steinbeck novel, the Grapes of Wrath. Cameron and Charlie just completed a sequel journey floating the entirety of the Mississippi River in their newest project, Floatin' with Huck, which is due to come out some time next year. Ian Glover is the founder of Big Dog Surf Camp in Marin, California and is the subject of a film directed by Perry Gershkow called Glory Ride. The film depicts Ian (also known as Big Dog), as he empowers kids by teaching them to surf, but also explores a gut wrenching personal story of homelessness, death, and gratitude. Sarah Herron is the founder of She Lift, which empowers girls with physical differences to discover confidence through outdoor adventure and body-positive mentorship. She recently produced a film being showcased at 5point called Dead Last, which shares the story of Kaitlin Heatherly on a quest to compete at the Paraclimbing World Championships. Just as a heads up, this conversation really pulled at my heart strings (and so did the entire 5point experience), so if you're a movie buff or a sucker for the feels - this episode is for you. If you're interested in learning more about the films and the people behind them, head on over to 5pointfilm.org and as always, I'll have all the details in the show notes at jeremyrjensen.com. A before we dive in, a huge thanks to the whole staff at 5point, especially Regna Jones, Meredith McKee and Sarah Jane Johnson. Also, a big hug to Deva and Eaden Shantay at True Nature Healing Arts for hosting us in such a beautiful venue, and Frank Scotti of Nomad, Inc for the killer photography work. Cool without further ado, my conversation with Regna Jones, Cameron Ford, Charlie Turnbull, Ian Glover, and Sarah Herron - live from the 5point Adventure Film Festival. Enjoy!

Gathering, listening to, and sharing stories strengthens the fabric of the community by bringing people together in conversations about what they love about where they live and what they’d like to change. Hearing from residents can also lead to discoveries that the community immediately rallies around, such as an 1870s African-American church in Pennsylvania or a historic theater in Colorado. Three speakers, each with different but meaningful experiences, share how storytelling enriches a community and leads to positive change. Speakers: - Mimi Iijima is the Director of Programs and Special Projects for Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Mimi leads PHC’s effort to strengthen communities through the humanities and by bringing Community Heart & Soul to towns in the Keystone state. - Dani Smith is the great-great-granddaughter of a Civil War soldier who served in the U.S. Colored Troops. Story gathering by the Greater Carlisle Heart & Soul Project led to the discovery of an 1870s African-American church and cemetery, where Dani’s family discovered their ancestor. Her family has since been instrumental in the early steps of preservation of the church and cemetery. - Elaine Brett is a resident of the North Fork Valley in Colorado. She was active in that community’s Heart & Soul project and played a key role in creating the nonprofit that bought and renovated the town’s historic Paradise Theatre, relying on a state grant and funds raised locally and globally online. She has over thirty years of experience in facilitation, strategic planning and management in commercial, non-profit, and governmental sectors. Currently, she is on the boards of The Friends of the Paradise Theatre, the Western Colorado Community Foundation, and Downtown Colorado, Inc. -Fran Stoddard is a communications consultant with Orton and will serve as the moderator for this event. A national award-winning producer of video programs, Fran served as producer and host of Vermont Public Television’s weekly “Profile” interview program for more than a decade. She frequently serves as moderator for community events and has served on numerous non-profit boards including the Hunger Free Vermont, the Vermont Journalism Trust, Vermont Mozart Festival, Burlington City Arts, Vermont International Film Foundation, and Vermont Public Radio. Offbeat character actor Tom Noonan started off his career in various theater troupes that utilized his skills as a guitarist and composer. A graduate from Yale's acting school, he founded the Paradise Theatre in 1983, which was instrumental later in his growth as an artist. Gravitating toward film and TV in the 80s, he began appearing regularly in edgy, unsympathetic roles, most notably as the "Tooth Fairy" serial killer in Manhunter (1986) which was the first feature length film to introduce the infamous Hannibal Lector character. Most of his other work at this time was solid but unrewarding, including such looming parts in Easy Money (1983), Best Defense (1984), The Monster Squadr Squad (1987) andRoboCop 2 (1990), so he began to take classes in writing and directing in order to extend himself.
