Roadtrippin' with Rob and Mike
The World needs the world of AVATAR 1 and 2 (#017)

Roadtrippin' with Rob and Mike

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2022 34:42

Rob is back from Cinemacon in Las Vegas and he gives us a full report on today's ROADTRIPPIN' podcast (while he's driving down the 10 and then taking the exit to the 15 and then ...).Of all the studio presentations made during the convention, Disney seemed to be the most impressive. They understood the assignment (as the meme goes) and made sure to provide enough, in-depth looks at their major projects without grinding everyone down with the sheer weight of all the movies planned for release in the next 12-18 months. But the one thing that stood out most for Rob was the presentation of the second Avatar movie. AVATAR: THE WAY OF THE WATER was shown on an IMAX screen in an HFR (high frame rate) format that allows for excruciating image detail. Everything about the presentation was perfect, according to Rob, and the effect was as planned. But there are unintended consequences that come with these AVATAR movies, I think. While people like to complain that the first film was just DANCES WITH WOLVES or FERNGULLY in space, it seems they're missing a few, key points.First off, if a movie-goer thinks that every story shown on the silver screen needs to be truly unique in order to be worthy of their time - they're over-estimating both the value of their time and the number of story archetypes that exist in the world. That number would be seven.Yes. Only seven.Sure, there are twists and turns and other ways to disguise an archetype so it feels different or unique. But it's just a disguise, folks. And that's okay. There's plenty of room for innovation - and, in reality, it's those innovations we fall in love with. Characters, setting, dialog, romance. It's the seasoning on the steak that makes us eat it up.Here's a link to a great article on the seven classic story archetypes: https://www.masterclass.com/articles/a-guide-to-story-archetypes#what-is-an-archetypeThe other point that people - especially critics - miss with movies like AVATAR (and, I presume, its sequel) is that they often can't tell the difference between a movie with a message and a message disguised as a movie.AVATAR is a movie with a message. Some people call it "woke" and, in the true sense of "wokeness," it is. But the term "woke" has been appropriated and given a negative connotation now. The term actually refers to becoming aware of a greater, more important situation that has always existed but ignored or unacknowledged for a long time.Today, the term is used almost exclusively in the context of racial relations. But in the case of AVATAR (and, I presume, AVATAR 2), the "woke" messaging is not just about the biases the humans express toward the Na'vi, but more importantly, the way humans seem to be unaware of the deep damage they do to the planet Pandora. The movie sets up the situation and then demonstrates the problem, allowing the viewer to arrive (or awaken) to the conclusion. The story definitely delivers a message (as stories are wont to do) and that message is woke. But that's a far different approach than what we see with movies and television shows that start with the message first and then try to construct a contrived series of events, loosely connected with a narrative, and then try to pass that off as a story. It's not. It's a lecture.Rob can probably point to dozens of examples of this in nu-Trek, and he's not wrong. In fact, Patrick Steward admitted in an interview on NPR's Fresh Air a couple of years ago, that this was what interested him about Star Trek: Picard in the first place. That may explain how story development is done on ST:PICARD and why we're getting what we're getting in nu-Trek, altogether.I've written more about the importance of the AVATAR franchise and James Cameron, in general, on the ROADTRIPPIN' blog today. You can check it out on our website: https://postgeeksingularity.com/roadtrippin-with-rmb/And remember, you can always send us a letter. Energie! Meinen PodCast abonnieren: | direkt | iTunes | Spotify | Google |

We're pleased to welcome back Robbie, aka Dr. RobDog, the dentist saving everyone's smile and embodying that positive force for good. Don't worry, when we talk about cavity searches... we're talking literally. We've got a lot to nerd out about in this episode! Gluten-free living, thoughts from re-watching a beloved superhero film, and more dentistry awesomeness. In This Episode... Dr. RobDog IS Batman Fanmail for Dr. RobDog Madame Grey Tea The Dark Knight - a rewatch Anger: handling it A Positive Force "I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times..." Patrick Steward Captain Picard That's right, folks, Captain Picard is making a live-action return to the small screen! Patrick Steward will reprise his role as the iconic Star Trek character and, as such, has since had a lot of positive things to say about the opportunity. As much as we all like to say we enjoy the dark thematic elements that Netflix has inundated us with over the past five years, taking full advantage of the TV-MA rating, there is a whole different draw to content and to people who bring us joy. It is comments like these that inspire me most! And I don't even know that much about Star Trek! As the guys talk about in the episode, sometimes ignorance is bliss... particularly in this day and age where social media has taken over how we consume news and how we react to it. AND how we absorb the reactions of our peers and role models. I recently watched the local, nightly news for the first time in a looong time and it was one story after another about death, about loss, about people being taken advantage of. I was exhausted at the end of the hour. However, it was a different kind of exhaustion. It wasn't an exhaustion that doubles as exasperation from endless opinions about current events. It was a pure exhaustion from the reminder of what reality is. It was nice that I didn't have to read comments from anyone with a Facebook account about each news segment. But as James Halliday wrote in his memoirs... reality is real. I would much rather be exhausted because of reality rather than be exhausted by the opinions of reality. (FYI - that quote was from Ready Player One.) The major question coming out of this episode is: how can we be a positive force in a world riddled with such negativity? Negativity inspires negativity. What goes into our heads will also come out of our mouths. We each have such unique talents and perspectives that my version of being a "positive force" will probably look different from yours, but it has to start with a decision. A decision to rise above the negativity. We've got to fight for it! Every day. That seems pleasantly ironic... fighting for positivity. Fighting... implying violence. Maybe the word "struggle" is better. A struggle can imply violence, which is not what I mean to suggest, but more the idea that it is difficult and that we encounter resistance. In the end, because we've grappled with that difficult thing, we understand the value in what we've accomplished and overcome and will hold onto it much more tightly. Ep. 38 first guest is comedian, actor, writer and director David Cross.  David has maintained his success for a long time.  Shonali believes David's success has something to do with promptly answering emails. Which do you think is David's favorite thing to do:  stand up, acting, editing, writing, or directing?  David's holiday party was intense.  Check out Jon Benjamin and David's Icelandic Blue on YouTube.  The third and last season of David's show Todd Margaret comes out this week.  In the Christmas spirit, David leaves us with words about Jesus. The second guest on WDEK is Shonali's latest girl crush; actress and writer Dolly Wells of HBO's Doll & Em.  Dolly and Shonali take shoe pics together.  Dolly moved to Brooklyn recently from England and explains (Americans) our differences. She loves Jordan.  Dolly created her HBO show with her very best friend, successful actress Emily Mortimer. The show was huge in England. Dolly's kids, her husband and her mother are all cast within the show.  Dolly says she and Emily once took 9 years to write a script for a screenplay.  She inspires us all to shoot a pilot instead of writing treatments.  In addition to requesting another season of Doll & Em from HBO, look for Dolly in the show Blunt Talk with Patrick Steward and a very tiny part in the movie 45 Years.  Ep. 38 musical guest is songwriter, musician and leader of Okkervil River, Will Sheff.   Will's band started out in Austin, Texas where he worked at a video store and played music in his house.  After he was written up in Rolling Stone, everything changed for his father. Will sings an unreleased song that he did lots of research on called Famous Tracheotomies.   Find out why Will and Shonali are fellow fans of the Rock*A*Teens.  Will plays Car and Driver from the Rock*A*Teens - Sweet Bird of Youth.  Have you heard of the musician David Wiffen?  David Cross joins the discussion and shares his new favorite musician, from the 1970's, Chic Clerggg from Greenland.  Happy New Year everyone!
