This week, we talk to legendary actor, musician, performance artist, and writer ANN MAGNUSON (Bongwater, The Hunger, Making Mr. Right, Cabin Boy, Pyramid Club, Club 57) about the influential cinema jazz documentary Jazz On A Summer's Day. We discuss the performances in the film (including Thelonious Monk, Anita O' Day, Chico Hamilton, Eric Dolphy to name a few performers), what it was like for Ann to inhabit Anita O'Day for the audio book of her autobiography, first impressions of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Ann's programing at the legendary NYC Club 57, Ann's new song 'Ghost Cat' with producer Don Dixon, her early life in West Virginia, D.I.Y. & Ann's SurRURALism techniques, success in the underground being a dirty word, the return of Vulcan Death Grip, being a professional walk-a-thoner, photographer & filmmaker Bert Stern, how the film brings a visceral sense of childhood for Ann, how Stern made the whole project happen with his own equipment and financing, Ann's parents and the dry Jazz club scene in West Virginia, filming Making Mr. Right and the new wave sensibility of the 80s, how Monk's performance is presented in the film, Chris scats the Anita O' Day finale of ‘Tea For Two' from his memory of repeated listening of the film at his video store, the white privilege throughout in the film, midnight Mahalia Jackson performances, how protest music is needed now more than ever and Ann reads from Anita O'day's memoir about the performance that was filmed for this movie and how it changed O'Days life. Leonard Bernstein—the conductor and composer known globally for his charisma and style—comes roaring back into the public discourse. We celebrate Lenny's relationship with Yaddo via a conversation with one of his mentees, acclaimed composer Daron Hagen. PLUS: Edgar Oliver, “the poet laureate of New York's dispossessed” (The New York Times), performs an excerpt of his latest one-man show, Rip Tide, an ode to The Pyramid Club, which offered an early haven for artists and outcasts in New York City's downtown, late '70s scene. We meet American artist Tabboo! (Stephen Tashjian, b. 1959, Leicester, Massachusetts) at his apartment in the East Village. We discuss his love of painting, his collection of glitter, early friendships via Boston including Nan Goldin and Jack Pierson. We explore his 1980s move to NY inspired by Klaus Nomi and New Wave, which led to his own regular performances at the legendary Pyramid Club appearing next to other drag legends like Rupaul and Lady Bunny. Notably, Tabboo! also contributed graphic design for album covers such as Deee-Lite's World Clique. The curly lettering on the album cover became an iconic image for the band and the rave culture of the early 1990s.Tabboo! is a multidisciplinary artist and painter based in New York City. He renders his subjects in a direct, intuitive style, suspending figurative elements against dreamlike colorfields. Tabboo! often draws subjects from his surroundings, depicting expressive cityscapes, portraits of friends, or imaginative still lifes inspired by the plants in his apartment. He also paints large, panoramic works and site-specific murals. These immersive settings recall the painted backdrops he made for performances in the 1980s and 1990s.While performing regularly himself, Tabboo! also designed numerous event fliers, posters, and album covers featuring his signature curvilinear text, which still appears in his work. Roberta Smith described Tabboo!'s paintings as “delicious, fresh and transparent, revealing every touch of color, every pour and drip.” His work is held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.Tabboo!'s work is on view in the exhibition The Myth of Normal: A Celebration of Authentic Expression at the MassArt Art Museum, Boston, though May 19, 2024.Follow @TabbooNYC and https://karmakarma.org/artists/tabboo/and https://www.gordonrobichaux.com/artists/tabboo Hosted on Acast. NYC electronic act MIDNIGHTCHOIR release their second album, Loverboy Molotov, a follow-up to 2016's THE CROWN! As a follow-up to their last single release — "Molotov," shared alongside an accompanying music video (directed and edited by lead vocalist and songwriter Patrick Bobilin) and a B-Side cover of Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead" — today, they share the LP's second single, "Lovecrimes," alongside a lyric video and B-Side cover of INXS' "Need You Tonight"Speaking on this new single, Bobilin wrote:"After 7 years of being in the public eye, the only times I felt I could be myself were at NYC dance bars like Pyramid Club or Saint Vitus. I started traveling to Austin, TX more often to visit a group of friends, free from the political infamy I'd become ensnared in. I recorded it quickly in one night, with the urgency of having to get out of town and shake loose of those tangles. 'Lovecrimes' was inspired by late nights in NYC and dancing at Barbarella in Austin, where they always play INXS on 80's Night. The cover of 'Need You Tonight' was also inspired by those late nights and features guitar from David Simutis who I met at an office job and who I learned was a seasoned indie rock vet, having engineered and played on some of the coolest records of the last 20 years."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vN6AjxspeY

Jim Cunningham spoke with Mattress Factory Senior Archivist Sarah Hallet and Digitization Archivist Sinéad Bligh. Over the last two years, the Mattress Factory has worked to digitize the Greer Lankton Archive in a project funded through the Council on Library and Information Resources and in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh. The online finding aid is the culmination of this work and will make publicly accessible Lankton's artistic development, artwork and exhibitions, along with her relationships to her friends and contemporaries, including Nan Goldin, David Wojnarowicz and Peter Hujar. The Greer Lankton Archive is an assemblage of over 15,000 materials collected from the work of artist Greer Lankton, a significant and underrecognized artist in the radical art scene of New York City's East Village during the 1980s. Lankton's exhibitions and performances included those at PS1, Club 57, Pyramid Club, Franklyn Furnace, Civilian Warfare Gallery, Hal Bromm Gallery and the Whitney Biennial NYC. She also exhibited across the US and Europe, including in the UK, Austria and the Venice Biennale. This April, the Mattress Factory presents “It's All About Greer Lankton,” a FREE event series leading up to the launch of an online finding aid to celebrate the famed artist Greer Lankton. The series will culminate in Greer's Birthday Bash on April 21st - what would have been Greer's 64th birthday. This free community day will mark the official launch of the Greer Lankton Collection Finding Aid. Admission to the Museum is free all day, with events and programming taking place from 3-7 PM. They also spoke about the latest exhibits at the archive, the café and shop and new coffee and restaurant additions to the cultural scene on the North Side.

Keep cool as the weather warms by hanging up your apron and having a delicious meal delivered from one of Philadelphia's hottest new ghost kitchens! Big Rube's Kitchen serves up Chef Reuben Harley's signature fried chicken, Philly cheesesteak and halal beef burgers from its ghost restaurant locations in Center City, University City and Subaru Park. Delivery is available through Grubhub, Uber Eats, DoorDash and Postmates. Aaron Anderson, franchise owner of four Original Hot Dog Factory restaurants, partnered with Chef Reuben Harley to launch the new business in 2020. While nearly half of Black-owned businesses were forced to close during the pandemic, renowned Philadelphia entrepreneur Anderson found creative ways to not only stay open, but to also grow, by pivoting and adapting to current trends. “I will do all I can to make sure I can not only thrive during this time but will motivate others to do the same,” said Anderson. In addition to his four Original Hot Dog Factory locations in Center City, The Bourse Food Hall, Fishtown and Subaru Park, in summer 2020 he opened another franchise in Philadelphia and is in negotiations for one in New York. Menu items include the Jamaican Jerk Chicken Dog, topped with grilled pineapples, sweet onions and a sweet island sauce; a surf ‘n' turf dog; an all-beet hot dog topped with lump crab meat and the Italian dog, a deep-fried sausage topped with peppers and onion. The Original Hot Dog Factory also serves chicken wings, burgers, fries and corn dog nuggets. Anderson credits some of his success during the pandemic to catering to first responders and essential workers, and making sure all his employees and take-out customers are in a safe environment to prevent the spread of COVID-19, with social distancing, face masks and the installation of self-service kiosks. Born and raised in the tough inner city of Philadelphia, Anderson credits his mother, a single parent of five, with his unyielding strength, discipline, humility, passion and persistent need to be of service to those in need. Anderson's foray into being a business owner — the very first in his family — started with the launch of his own screen-printing company in 2009, Union Printing. The idea to start this company culminated while working as an assistant to a top record company executive at Sony in New York City. Anderson realized a need to provide quality merchandise for an affordable price after seeing an invoice at work and convinced his bosses that he could not only meet the demand for the record label's printing, but most importantly, for a far better price. As the saying goes, the rest is history. Anderson not only surpassed expectations at Sony, but Union Printing established itself as a leader in the industry and is still hugely successful more than a decade later. Anderson's success with Union Printing provided not only financial stability, but also the experience needed to open his first restaurant franchise in March 2020, which he did without needing any loans. His immediate success within The Original Hot Dog Factory organization led to him becoming an area representative, trainer for new franchisees and obtaining a percentage of company ownership. Anderson also recently acquired two Rita's Italian Ice locations in Philadelphia, adding to his growing franchise empire. His keen interest in technology prompted him to become an investor in the pharmaceutical application QwikScript and flight simulator application Flype. These strategic investments contribute to his growing financial portfolio and further strengthens his parent company Axxeum LLC, which was formed in 2018. In line with his desire to give back to the community, he became a member of Philadelphia's Chamber of Commerce and The Pyramid Club. Anderson is an investor in Storehouse, a cannabis chain in New Jersey. His future plans include becoming an elected official in his home state of Pennsylvania. An inspirational memoir about his life is also in the works to provide invaluable information and encouragement to others who desire to follow in his footsteps. This week's guest is John Epperson — also known by his stage name, Lypsinka, who you might've seen in the documentary Wigstock, in the movie Black Swan, and gracing New York stages from the legendary Pyramid Club to Lincoln Center. John moved from small town Mississippi to New York to chase a dream of a life in the theater, and found fame with his drag alter-ego in the wild 1970s and 80s, all while awash in radical revolutionary queer culture of the East Village. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that I've got a little newsletter where I share sneak peeks at what I'm working on — the most recent featured a recommendation for a FASCINATING documentary on the history of Nickelodeon. Sign up for that newsletter at mattbaume.com.And speaking of the history of Nickelodeon, check out my YouTube channel for deep dives into pop culture history — my latest video is all about Rocko's Modern Life and the secret gay history of 90s animation. That's at YouTube.com/mattbaume.Also a big thanks to everyone who supports the Sewers of Paris on Patreon. And to everyone who's reviewed it on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.

Along with bandmate RuPaul, Lady Bunny found a home at the Pyramid Club and went on to change cultural history. She can barrage us with off-color jokes, get us dancing to an eclectic mix of music to die for, provoke us with her political punditry and entertain us in everything from movies to TV shows. Finally we welcome Aaron Anderson the franchise owner of four The Original Hot Dog Factory The Original Hot Dog Factory Philadelphia restaurants in the Philadelphia area. “Forty-one percent of black-owned businesses nationwide were forced to close during this horrific Covid-19 pandemic compared to seventeen percent of white-owned businesses. According to a recent study by experts, most of those impacted are black-owned bars and restaurants ̶ that's about 440,000 companies ̶ but I will do all I can to make sure I can not only thrive during this time but will motivate others to do the same,” said Aaron Anderson. Anderson credits some of his success these past few months to catering to first responders and essential workers, and making sure all of his employees and take-out customers are in a safe environment to prevent the spread of Covid-19, with social distancing, face masks and the installation of self-service kiosks. Born and raised in the tough inner city of Philadelphia, PA, Anderson credits his mother, a single parent of five, with his unyielding strength, discipline, humility, passion and persistent need to be of service to those in need. Anderson's foray into being a business owner ̶ the very first in his family ̶ started with the launch of his very own screen-printing company in 2009, Union Printing that established itself as a leader in the industry and is still hugely successful more than a decade later. Aaron Anderson's keen interest in technology prompted him to become an investor in the pharmaceutical application QwikScript, and flight simulator application Flype. These strategic investments contribute to his growing financial portfolio and further strengthens his parent company Axxeum LLC, which was formed in 2018. In line with his desire to give back to the community, he became a member of Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia and Pyramid Club. His future plans include having ownership in a professional sports organization and to become an elected official in his home state of Pennsylvania. An inspirational memoir about his life is also in the works to provide invaluable information and encouragement to others who desire to follow in his footsteps. You say you STILL NEED MORE!!! Don't forget we still have our regular weekly segment Chef Barbie Marshall who is a Chef Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen Season 10 finalist, appeared on Season 17 of FOX Hell's Kitchen #AllStars, as well named Pennsylvania's most influential chef by Cooking Light will delight us with her tip of the week. Late one night, in 1984, Lady Bunny and a few friends drunkenly wandered from the Pyramid Club in the East Village to Tompkins Square Park and staged an impromptu drag show in the bandshell. This would soon become an annual drag bacchanal, which lasted until 2001. In 2018, Lady Bunny resurrected the festival, bringing together legendary queens with some of the new children of drag, creating one of the largest drag performances ever staged. The documentary, "Wig," directed by Chris Moukarbel, explores the origins and the influence of the historic festival through rich archival footage, and provides a look into the contemporary drag movement for which the festival served as a foundation.

This episode, we first must tip our hats to our favorite caped crusader, Adam West, who passed away June 9 at 88. What was that magic touch he had as an actor? Would the show even have been the show without him? Then it’s onward with King Tut’s Coup and Batman’s Waterloo. Do these two episodes make up the best King Tut arc so far? If so, in what ways? Was Robin’s part in this arc intentionally minimized? Is the cheapening of the production starting to show through that much more? PLUS: The Flaming Lips’ version of the theme, and your mail! GIVING PROPS TO RECYCLED PROPS The cage as it appeared in Fine Finny Fiends... ...and in Batman's Waterloo (sans umbrella) The "Mardi Gras faces" in The Joker is Wild... ... and in the Royal Oil Boiling Room (in particular, the one at the top of the shot) The costume change lever in its natural habitat (left) and at the Pyramid Club (below)
