This week's episode of The Driven Podcast takes you far from the warm confines of a studio and puts you… in a warm desert to hear the sounds of the Dakar Rally. You've likely heard of the Dakar, but you actually heard it? As well as being there to hear the cars thunder by, we get inside the Ford team to learn about the top tier T1 Raptor.Alex Goy ventured out into the sands to see what's what in all things Dakar. From discovering the perfect way to tackle the rally (it's a bit gross but WOULD work), hearing what a T1 truck sounds like at full pelt, to sitting down with the Ford M-Sport team to learn how to peel a Rally Raid truck apart, and what it's like to drive, it's quite the adventure. Guests this week include Driver Mitch Guthrie Jnr, off-road programme manager - Mike Norton, Chief Engineer Jon Sprackling and team principle Mathew Wilson. You'll hear tales of derring do, some rather fine motor vehicle noises, and learn first hand what it's like to tackle the toughest race on earth. Think you know Dakar? You will after this…_______________________________________________The Driven Podcast brings you motoring-focused discussions, observations from the automotive world, and interviews in which we explore our guests' careers, exploits, and anything else worth discussing. We will also keep you up to speed with the latest automotive news stories and insights into the cars and motorcycles we're reviewing at Driven.

Today's KLIM Dakar Rally Daily show from Stage 12 is here and we are blown away by how close the front of the race continues to be. Amazing rides at the front of the race today shook the results up and turned predictability on its head. But, the front three contenders are still in control and the time gaps are someone staying unbelievably tight. We're talking less than three minutes separating the top three, 28-second gap between the top two! That's right, 28 seconds is the gap at the top of this Dakar Rally. We hear directly from stage bosses Daniel Sanders and Toby Price as they represent Australia with big pride at the front of the race today, delivering crazy strong performances in the dunes. Skyler Howes steals some internet access and sends us an update from the last few stages, as well. Great to hear from you, Skyler! Finally, our on-the-ground man with the microphone, Ashley House brings us two quick interviews today. First up is Technical Director at the KTM group for Rally Stefan Huber, who we've talked to before, but never during a Dakar quite like this. Then, House takes us to the Original by Motul class and gets the two front runners, who are separated by less than three minutes for the win, in a dual-interview full of drama! Ok, not really, but it is entertaining to hear directly from the gladiators of Dakar.More fun and great race insight on today's show. Enjoy!
Some more history on Dakar and tips on how to get started in rally raid. It's the most fun you'll ever have!
If you're travelling to or live in the United States, and you're looking for a long distance motorcycle adventure utilizing mainly back roads and trails, the Trans-America Trail may be just what you're looking for. On the website, it says that dual-sport motorcycle is required for the more challenging sections, and the best time to do the entire trail is probably late June in to early September, to avoid snow in some of the states. The TAT maps and roll charts have been designed to ride only from East to West, no matter where your starting point is. Fuel stops are fairly regular, motel locations are marked on the maps, and if you're camping you might want to do your research ahead of time if using a roll chart, as they're not marked on there. A GPS is not required to do the TAT, as the roll chart is used with your odometer, but the GPS is a great back up. Make sure you plan well in advance, as you'll have to purchase your maps and roll charts on the TAT website, and allow enough time for delivery. While waiting for it all to arrive, you can start packing and making travel arrangements. In this week's episode we talk to British rally racer, Jenny Morgan and Brad Barker, from The Ride of my Life. Jenny rode the TAT a couple of times, first on a Yamaha Tenere 660 and then the CBX500 with the Rally Raid package. When we spoke to Brad, he was riding the TAT and offering a challenge to The Ride of My Life followers, which include some prizes. Rally Raid’s Honda CB500X Adventure Bike On this episode we talk about the Rally Raid conversion kit that transforms what is basically a street bike, the Honda CB500X, into what may the ultimate mid-weight adventure bike. The end result seems to impress everyone that comes across it and a quick look at some of the videos on this page have to impress you. With the heart of the beast being an ultra reliable Honda twin cylinder 471cc fuel injected power plant you are melding the Honda reliability with some incredibly well designed suspension pieces manufactured by Rally Raid and Tractive Suspension. Hidden nuggets include a two piston fork that has both high speed and low speed dampening, which is unheard of elsewhere. “I can confirm that there is no other twin cylinder adventure bike on the market that even comes close to the all-round ability and confidence inspiring handling both on- and off-road that this bike now delivers with the Rally Raid Products upgrades,” says Morgan. “The best analogy I can think of is it rides like an open class rally bike, but with a lower seat and bullet-proof reliability. You will not be disappointed.”’ - Giant Loop press release Guests: John Mitchinson: Owner & machinist/engineer, Rally Raid Products http://www.rally-raidproducts.co.uk http://www.cb500xadventure.com Jenny Morgan: British rally racer rode Giant Loop’s bike on the TransAm 500 Proof of Concept tour in 2015, a 50 day trip, covering more than 12,000 miles from the west to east coast and back again on the Trans America Trail Website: www.jennydakar.com Jenny ADV Rider Forum: http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/trans-am-500-the-seven-year-itch.1061450/ Trans America Trail: http://www.transamtrail.com Harold Olaf Cecil: Owner & Co-Founder at Giant Loop Moto, the distributor in the US for the Rally Raid Kit for the Honda CB500X. www.giantloopmoto.com Brought to You By: Max BMW Motorcycles Shop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model.
