There is an idea that I've sometimes heard around rationalist and EA circles, that goes something like “you shouldn't ever feel safe, because nobody is actually ever safe”. I think there are at least two major variations of this: You shouldn't ever feel safe, because something bad could happen at any time. To think otherwise is an error of rationality. You shouldn't ever feel safe, because AI timelines might be short and we might be about to die soon. Thus, to think that you're safe is making an error of rationality. I'm going to argue against both of these. If you already feel like both of these are obviously wrong, you might not need the rest of this post. Note that I only intend to dispute the intellectual argument that these are making. It's possible to accept on an intellectual level that it would make sense to feel safe most of the time, but still not feel safe. That kind of emotional programming requires different kinds of tools to deal with. I'm mostly intending to say that if you feel safe, you don't need to feel bad about that. You don't need to make yourself feel unsafe; for most people, it's perfectly rational to feel safe. I do expect some of the potential readers of this post to live in a very unsafe environment - e.g. parts of current-day Ukraine, or if they live together with someone abusive - where they are actually in constant danger. For them, it may make sense to feel unsafe all the time. (If you are one of them, I genuinely hope things get better for you soon.) But these are clearly situations where something has gone badly wrong; the feeling that one has in those situations shouldn't be something that one was actively striving for. I think that any reader who doesn't live in an actively horrendous situation would do better to feel safe most of the time. (Short timelines don't count as a horrendous situation, for reasons that I'll get into.) As I interpret it, the core logic in both of the “you shouldn't ever feel safe” claims goes as follows: To feel safe implies a belief that nothing bad is going to happen to you But something bad can happen to you at any time, even when you don't expect it. In the case of AI, we even have reasons to put a significant probability on this in fact happening soon. Thus, feeling safe requires having an incorrect belief, and the rational course of action is to not feel safe. One thing that you might notice from looking at this argument is that one could easily construct an exactly opposite one as well. To feel unsafe implies a belief that things aren't going to go well for you. But things can go well for you, even when you don't expect it. In the case of AI, we even have reasons to put a significant probability on things going well. Thus, feeling unsafe requires having an incorrect belief, and the rational course of action is to feel safe. That probably looks obviously fallacious - just because things can go well, doesn't mean that it would be warranted to always feel safe. But why then would it be warranted to feel unsafe in the case where things just can go badly? To help clarify our thinking, let's take a moment to look at how the US military orients to the question of being safe or not. More specifically, to the question of whether a given military unit is reasonably safe or whether it should prepare for an imminent battle. Readiness Condition levels are a series of standardized levels that a unit's commander uses to adjust the unit's readiness to move and fight. Here's an abridged summary of them: REDCON-1. Jeff was born and raised in Vallejo, California. Being brought up in a military family, it was only a matter of time until Jeff enlisted at the age of 19. He left for his first tour in Iraq and eventually got “fed up” with his assignment and went AWOL, for which he was arrested and thrown in Army Jail for two months returning back home after wards. After the attacks on Sept. 11th, Barillo appealed to the Army and was allowed to re-enlist. He started leading convoys on missions in Iraq and experiences many ambushes, gunfights and explosions. After returning to base, most soldiers would work out or play computer games, but Barillo would return to his room and write/record raps about his time in Iraq, which is where his music career started. Jeff Barillo aka Soldier Hard aka The Voice. Jeff Barillo is an Iraqi war veteran who has found solace through the expression of music. Under the stage name Soldier Hard, Jeff has grown into massive popularity not only in the military community, from which most of his audience hail from, but also with the general public. He was even given the title “The Voice for our Troops.” Barillo's popularity seems to have no stopper as he turned down a contract with Sony Entertainment in hopes of “holding off for something better.” He has collaborated with many other veteran/military inspired acts, and founded his own record label REDCON-1 Music Group. Jeff began his career on an Army base with a small microphone and a laptop. After returning home, he performed at some local bars and clubs, and putting his music out on social media, which eventually allowed his music gain more popularity. His songs tell stories of our soldiers and the hardships they face, which attracts a large crowd of military supporters and soldiers. Barillo was diagnosed with PTSD after returning home and a lot of his music is based around it and receiving treatment, particularly Group Therapy. Boone Cutler is an author, columnist, music video director and Warfighter Rights leader that has become the first nationally recognized radio talk show personality who is also a combat veteran from the current war. He began writing his Iraq War inspired novel "Voodoo in Sadr City" during his combat tour in Iraq and later completed it during his two-year recovery from wartime injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, during the Neglect Scandal of 2007. After his recovery Boone began to see a major void in the Warfighter community and decided to approach Fox News affiliate 99.1 FM Talk with the concept of a new show that focused on national, international and social events based on the Warfighter's perspective. In 2011, his show "Tipping Point with Boone Cutler" began and gave him a weekly stage for his raw Paratrooper, no-holds-barred style, quickly becoming a hit over the air waves and online with curious mainstream American listeners, and his fellow Warfighters. Today we welcome back the martial arts movie star, Scott Adkins, who makes his third appearance on our show. Scott and the director, Jesse V. Johnson, have been responsible for some very impressive work over the last few years, including Savage Dog, Accident Man, The Debt Collector, Triple Threat and their latest, Avengement, which sees Scott provide one of his most intense acting performances. It's a partnership which allows Scott to take on more challenging, character-driven work, and one which shows no signs in slowing down. In this quick catch-up, Scott talks about how his new-found creative freedom in front of and behind the camera has sparked an interest in directing his own films. He discusses the types of movies he would like to make as a director, as well as giving us an update on some of his upcoming movies; one of which is Ip Man 4, which sees Scott working with kung fu movie legends Yuen Woo-ping and Donnie Yen. The UK martial arts actor and filmmaker Mark Strange shares a connection with Scott that dates back to 2003, when Mark also worked on the Jackie Chan film, The Medallion, which featured a young Scott Adkins. Flash-forward to 2019 and Mark can now be seen going toe-to-toe with Scott in tough new UK actioner, Avengement, which is out now in the USA and available on digital in the UK courtesy of Dazzler Media. The film will be available on Blu-ray and DVD from 1 July and you can pre-order it now from Amazon. Mark will also be making an appearance in Ip Man 4. On this episode, he discusses his experiences working in Hong Kong as well as the challenges of getting his own action movies off the ground in the UK, where he has predominantly worked with the director Chee Keong-cheung. Their latest film - the zombie action flick, Redcon-1 - took a mammoth seven years to complete, and is available to watch now on Netflix.
