While the wider world continues to embrace ubiquitous access for their digital products, compelling rumors indicate Sony might opt to go in the other direction. This is particularly surprising considering their pursuit of success on PC, openness in publishing on Nintendo Switch, and the shocking move to bring Helldivers II to Xbox. Then again, the numbers speak for themselves. It appears PlayStation has grossed somewhere between one and two billion dollars in total from their PC releases dating back to 2020, a comically small sum compared to their greater gross over that time, and an amount of money that may simply not justify further jeopardizing their closed ecosystem. Are we about to snap back to the old way of doing things? Many PlayStation fans will be pleased, if so. Plus: Wolverine gets a September release date on PS5, Horizon: Hunters Gathering and Marathon revel in concurrent playtests, Death Stranding 2 is coming to PC very soon, French publisher Nacon declares its insolvency, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Can Sony's first party teams truly be blamed for pitching games-as-a-service when it was clear that's what leadership wanted? Could it be possible that the secret Santa Monica Studio, Cory Barlog-directed game is Uncharted? Is Resident Evil 9's 10-12 hour runtime a selling point or a detriment? Will Sacred Symbols go another 400 episodes, or perhaps even 4,000? This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. We were already recording this episode when unexpected news broke: Sony is shuttering Texas-based first-party remake and port specialist studio Bluepoint. Equally shocking -- when taking into context the many first and second party failures, flubs, and misalignments in recent years -- is PlayStation Studios lead Hermen Hulst still somehow having a job. Bluepoint has an exceptional pedigree alongside untapped potential, but that's been squandered by the same machinery that allowed them to make a multiplayer game in the first place. Who is responsible for all of this first party buffonery? What's with this obsession with established teams all chasing the same exact thing? And how lucky is Sony that the going is so good for PlayStation 5 that none of this really seems to matter? Here's hoping the bloodletting begins and ends here, but we're skeptical. Other news this week includes rumors of PlayStation 6's delayed timeline, when we might expect to see Santa Monica Studios' unannounced title, McFarlane Toys picking up the Sony toy license, and more. Then, we wrap things up with listener inquiries. On the back of Silent Hill: Townfall's PS5 console exclusivity, why does Sony bother chasing these deals these days? Does Fairgame$ have an icecube's chance in hell of succeeding? Will God of War's remake be one compilation or three separate games? Is Dustin ready for his fatherly snot-sucking duties? Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KThe latest segment of Notorious Mass Effect dives deep into God of War: Sons of Sparta, the surprise shadow-dropped PS5 exclusive from Santa Monica Studio and Mega Cat Studios. Released February 12, 2026, for $29.99, this 2D action-platformer—marketed as a Metroidvania—explores young Kratos during his Spartan Agoge training alongside brother Deimos, framed by adult Kratos (voiced by T.C. Carson) narrating to Calliope.Analytic Dreamz breaks down the core premise, gameplay execution, and franchise implications. The ~12-hour experience features light/heavy attacks, parry/dodge mechanics, color-coded enemy attacks, and "Gifts from Olympus" abilities like double jump and slingshot. Exploration includes interconnected maps, collectibles (owls, lore, olive trees), optional bosses, and upgrades via blood orbs.Critically, it holds a 69 Metacritic / 70 OpenCritic score—the lowest in the 20+ year God of War series—praised for brotherhood themes and retro style but criticized for stiff combat lacking impact, shallow Metroidvania elements, limited backtracking encouragement, repetitive story loops, and basic progression. Visuals sit between retro and modern but lack cinematic scale. The co-op controversy—initial listings implied full campaign support, but it's limited to post-game challenge mode—sparked confusion and refund requests.User scores sit higher at 8.2, with some quick Platinum achievements. Analytic Dreamz examines if this low-risk spin-off serves as franchise maintenance amid Greek trilogy remake news, or falls short of mainline prestige.Tune in as Analytic Dreamz delivers a concise, no-holds-barred breakdown of this polarizing entry—serviceable but forgettable for many, yet a nostalgic Greek-era return for fans.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

From Disney's new CEO to Googles game "maker". GTA 6 is locked in, and so is the final Fast and Furious. But what does it mean for you? Meanwhile Overwatch is shedding its 2, and going old school.
In this episode, we begin our final game for the current season, Santa Monica Studio's 2018 reboot of God of War. Thankfully we have Mads, our very own resident Norse God, to guide us along the way. As Kratos and Atreus travel across realms on their journey to Alfheim, they'll discover trolls, ogres, world serpents, and even a few pigeons.
Sony-owned Santa Monica Studio is one of PlayStation's first party powerhouses. Responsible for the God of War franchise -- and, other than Kinetica early in the PS2 era, only the God of War franchise -- there was some excitement building about what was next. But what if it's just more God of War... at least kinda? New rumors indicate that Santa Monica is working on something more familiar than we might have hoped, and from our perspective, that can only mean one thing. We discuss. Plus: Sucker Punch expresses interest in returning to Infamous, Ghost of Yotei gets special edition PS5 hardware and a DualSense, HBO's second season of The Last of Us earns a ton of Emmy nominations, concept art for Deviation's cancelled PlayStation exclusive emerges, Dragon Quest VII is apparently being remade at Square Enix, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! With the demise of Xbox's Turn 10 Studio, is it time for PlayStation to port Gran Turismo to its rival's machine? Is Colin totally off-base with his desire for Arc System Works to create a PlayStation fighter instead of a Marvel one? What's the worst example in our personal gaming lives of losing a save file? Would you play a Miles Morales-style God of War interstitial? If you said "yes," we have good news: Just such a product is apparently slated for PS5 this fall, and it's rumored to return the series to its Greek roots. But is this really the best use of Santa Monica Studio's time? Shouldn't all eyes be on what's truly next? We discuss. Then: Ubisoft has announced its long-rumored financial deal with tech conglomerate Tencent, one that will give the Chinese firm a 25% stake in a new entity encompassing Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. What does this $1+ billion infusion in capital do for the ailing publisher? Is it too little, too late? Plus: Indiana Jones' PS5 release date draws very near, Until Dawn's original PS3 version leaks in full, Rocksteady's upcoming Batman game may be the first confirmed PlayStation 6 title, Bandai Namco and Sony get together on more retro PlayStation ports, and more. We're pleased to present to you a decidedly old-school-coded episode of Sacred Symbols, recorded in the traditional 1v1 fashion. And we've plenty to keep us busy, starting with Sony's quarterly financials showing a thriving games division hampered by slowing console sales. But with PS5 Pro around the corner (and the inevitable first true price cut for the core hardware), can we count on things picking up once more? Meanwhile, as we've long-assumed, Santa Monica Studio is indeed working on a new IP, its first since the original God of War launched in 2005 (and only its second, period). When can we expect its reveal? Plus: Our first look at The Last of Us on HBO's second season, PC specs for God of War: Ragnarok, the closure of one-time Sony second party Ready at Dawn, PlayStation 4 still drawing ports like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor after 11 years, and more, followed by listener inquiries. What are our expectations for Insomniac's Wolverine? Can the heyday of Guitar Hero and Rock Band after be recaptured? Could The Last of Us Online quickly have become Sony's most expensive game ever? Did Dustin's absence inadvertently cause the Japanese stock market crash? This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. This week, Nigel and Tazziii talk to content creator and cosplayer Abi, also known as Opal Ink Cosplay. By day, she works as a publishing executive at Future Friends Games, and by night, she dresses as her favourite fictional characters. We hear how an early passion for games has turned into a promising career balancing multiple creative pursuits. We also hear Abi's perspective on tackling burnout, and the amazing story behind her becoming the official Atreus cosplayer for God of War Ragnarök, a role that allowed her to work alongside Santa Monica Studio! Abi is a fantastic example of how putting your talents out into the world can bring fantastic opportunities back to you and one you don't want to miss.
We've long-wondered what Sony's plans were with its dormant SOCOM franchise (or if it even had plans at all). After all, we can't just ignore the success the likes of Ubisoft have found with titles like Rainbow Six: Siege, and even in a post-Zipper Interactive world, it always felt like PlayStation's tactical shooter never really got a fair shake at success after its PS2 heyday. So color us both pleased and surprised when information from the resumé of a deceased actor pointed towards a SOCOM game that no one had ever even heard of: SOCOM 111. While it's fairly clear this project never got off the ground (or did it?), its existence gives us a fleeting glimpse into Sony's potential plans, and frankly, we can help but wonder if Zipper's defunct series may yet see the light of day in the future. Other news this week includes a release date for Star Wars: Outlaws, Vampire Survivors finally migrating to PlayStation platforms, Stellar Blade going gold, potential hiring for a new God of War game at Santa Monica studio, copious Destiny 3 and Dead Space 2 Remake rumors, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will PlayStation's colorful old logo ever make a return? Do we ever rename the characters in our digital adventures? What's our worst 'losing progress in a game' experience? Should one listener extract his stolen garbage bin from his neighbor, no matter the cost? My God of War Ragnarok Valhalla reaction was initial excitement but then curiosity about the growing trend of more rogue modes. I will be diving into God of War Ragnarok Valhalla gameplay in a second stream so be sure to check that out. I will try to provide my own ongoing God of war Ragnarok Valhalla review as I play it. But the larger discussion I want to have is about the growing use of rogue modes in games. Even The Last of Us Part 2 Remaster is coming with a brand new rogue mode. Is this a good thing? And why are companies doing it? I am pumped to dive into God of War Valhalla later today to see if it delivers. In this week's episode, Eric and Nicky decide their own fate as they go berserk for the new God of War game. God of War Ragnarök is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released worldwide on November 9, 2022, for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It is the ninth installment in the series, the ninth chronologically, and the sequel to 2018's God of War. Loosely based on Norse mythology, the game is set in ancient Scandinavia and features series protagonist, Kratos, and his now teenage son, Atreus. Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?) BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast/ Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Music by Eric Luedtke and Mark Spurlock References: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War_Ragnar%C3%B6k https://www.ign.com/wikis/god-of-war-ragnarok/Easter_Eggs_and_References https://godofwar.fandom.com/wiki/God_of_War_Ragnar%C3%B6k#Trivia https://gamerant.com/god-of-war-ragnarok-thor-tall-height-estimate-answer/ https://collider.com/god-of-war-live-action-series-prime-video/ https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/god-of-war-ragnarok-new-game-plus-update/

Andrew rounds up a fantastic group of guests to talk about one of the biggest games of 2022, God of War Ragnarök. Timestamps below if you want to skip the spoiler section of the conversation. In only about 10 weeks on the market, God of War: Ragnarok has grossed (give or take) around $750 million. At 11 million units sold and counting, it's a stark reminder that -- yes indeed! -- people will buy games, buy them at a high price point, and buy them in great quantities. All that's necessary is for that product to be special. Having already made back Ragnarok's development and marketing costs several times, what's next for Santa Monica Studio? Behold yet another Sony money printer! Plus: PlayStation 5 sales are very strong, a sequel to an older PlayStation game is quietly (but blatantly) revealed, PSVR2's strengths and weaknesses are called into question weeks before launch, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! How do we feel about James Gunn's attempts to tie DC games into their larger entertainment universe? Will changes to Resident Evil 4 ruin the remake? Does Amy Hennig get too much credit for Uncharted? Can we learn to embrace the power of the badger? Thanks to our sponsors! Before we get into the show notes, we wanted to recognize an icon in the industry. Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman, recently passed away at the age of 66. He is and always will be the voice of Batman for us and it was an honor to have met him and share the impact he had on our childhood. Rest in peace Mr. Conroy. In this episode we have our big review of God of War Ragnarok. It's the hotly anticipated sequel to 2018's God of War. This game is absolutely stunning in so many ways. We have a few complaints, but nothing that hurts the game from being the masterpiece that it is. It's bigger in almost every way than the first game. We also talk all about The Game Awards coming December 9th. We predict who will win and who we want to win from the top categories of the showcase. Who do you think will win game of the year?We also look back in time at the best beginnings of video games. Games sometimes start well, sometimes they don't. What games really hit home for you? Let us know your favorite beginnings and endings in our Discord channel! Finally, we discuss the pre-release beta of Warhammer 40k Darktide. Where is Kratos? Belief that we'd see God of War: Ragnarok by now has left us dismayed, particularly in light of a rather odd video from Santa Monica Studio that gives us little information about a game originally slated to launch in 2021. But without a release date (outside of year) and no confirmation it's even incoming by year's end (except for from a random Tweet from a dev), PlayStation fans are left wondering if their faith in getting something timely from Santa Monica Studio was ill-founded. Other news this week includes the return of Amy Hennig to the Star Wars universe, endless rumors about a new Uncharted game and The Last of Us' remake, the arrival of the NFL on PSVR, the increasing perils of in-game advertising, and more. We wrap up with listener questions galore, as usual, including inquiries on what Netflix's fall in fortune means for gaming subscription services, circumventing old-school punishment with save states, the bad design around level caps, and so much more. Would we do it with an alien? We talk about that, too. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
