On this episode of the Hot Spot series, Gabriel Ornelas sits down with with chef Franco Sampogna and operator Bernardo Silva, co-owners of FREVO, a contemporary French restaurant hidden behind a small art gallery in Greenwich Village, New York—a secret you'd want to share with everyone. The name "Frevo" in Portuguese means "to boil," reflecting not only the shared language of the co-owners but also the vibrant energy of New York City. Originally from Brazil and Portugal respectively, Franco and Bernardo crossed paths in their late teens in France, driven by a youthful hunger for knowledge and a passion for the hospitality industry. Franco spent a decade in France, working with culinary legends like Alain Ducasse, Guy Savoy, and Fabrice Vulin, while Bernardo focused on honing his hospitality management skills at esteemed places such as the Shangri-La Hotel in Paris and Hôtel Windsor in Nice. France served as their training ground and foundation, but New York remained their North Star. After almost a decade in France, Franco and Bernardo made the leap to New York, slowly shaping their dream. Despite the challenges, they opened FREVO, featuring an exquisite tasting menu an intimate 18 counter seats and a table for six. Tune in as Franco and Bernardo passionately narrate their journey—a tale of friendship, partnership, and the pursuit of their dream against all odds in the bustling city of New York. Feeling particularly reflective as the US electoral process inches toward a conclusion, Allan and Darren chat about what they see as the short- and long-term challenges facing Australian foreign policy. In the short term, the bilateral relationship with China looms largest. Allan makes that case that the Prime Minister (or Foreign Minister) should make a speech clearly outlining Australia’s position, while Darren wonders whether the PM has already said what he wants to say. And what specific diplomatic moves available to the government? Darren offers some thoughts on whether the ongoing trade disruptions are simply coercion, or whether other geoeconomic or industry policy motives may be a factor. The two also debate the distinction between “the Chinese government” and “the CCP”, and compare it to distinguishing the Trump administration from the United States as a whole. The other major short-term issue discussed is cooperation with Australia’s regional partners, Southeast Asia in particular. The signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) may offer an opportunity for Australia to develop deeper ties, though Darren raises whether shared security interests are a necessary condition for really substantive cooperation. He also speculates on whether Australia’s experience with economic coercion and protecting against foreign interference could be a useful source of advice, while Allan counters that Asian nations have been grappling with these questions for decades, even centuries! Allan also previews PM Morrison’s trip to Japan this week. Looking to the longer term, Allan and Darren describe a range of possible futures, the kinds of investment strategies Australia could pursue now to prepare for future challenges, and potential risks to a long-term strategy. Peking to Barton on Sea Official pictures from event can be viewed here. 30th May Gathered for the Police briefing, a senior police officer gave the most rudimentary briefing but woe betide any of us who violates Chinese traffic law and gets caught. 31st May Our driving licences in the end were given to each competitor without taking a test. At last we queued for the coaches provided to take us to the warehouse to collect the cars. Traffic in Beijing seems to nearly gridlock most of the time, drivers pull out with normally no indication and force their way into the traffic lane. The warehouse inside was an amazing site with cars of every shape and make being coaxed into life. Hard to hear the Mercedes engine start with so much noise. At last we were in the sunshine and heading for petrol. In China motorists are mainly served. I suppose cheap labour is the answer to that. Nose to tail traffic all the way back to the Shangri La Hotel, in 38C heat. Arrived back about 16:00 for signing on. Cocktails and dinner later, and tomorrow my car must face scrutiny to obtain our entry pass. 1st June My old Merc fourth in line for scrutineering and for gaining the certificate required for signing on and finally being admitted for the drive and journey of a lifetime. Quite a sight to such diversity and so many very different cars starting from the 1907 Contal and 1909 White Pullman steam car (this car travelled with a backup crew and carrying water and petrol) to a vast variety of vintage and classic cars. Early Bentleys always great to see. So we are all set to go. The next challenge will be to drive to The Great Wall of China and from there the adventure will begin. 2nd June Day 1 The Greatest Drive on Earth begins for me and my son Marcus today. Left the centre of Beijing at about 6:30 and made our way to The Great Wall the starting point. We arrived at about 7:30 a 75 KM drive. The start was accompanied by dancers in Chinese Traditional dress, some dressed in dragon costumes. Our start time was 9:26, and off we went. Spent our waiting time seeing other competitors leave. Once we left the motorways the roads were in poor condition with pot holes large enough to swallow half a car in places. Driving standards unbelievably poor. Chinese drivers have no concept of queuing, taking turns or letting people in. I will never again complain about pot holes in the New Forest. The schedule was tough, no time for lunch. On a very narrow road which became grid locked a German competitor driving another Mercedes Fintail had to take control of the traffic and even show a driver how to reverse so our cars could pass. After a near miss with a large three wheeled truck that decided to pull out when I was overtaking we eventually arrived at Hohhot. After dinner, and time spent making sure the car is fit for tomorrow I decided to crash out. This is just the first day. June 3rd Day 2 Start time again 9:26. Our destination will be Erenhot on the Mongolian border. Leaving Hohhot was the usual dilemma with very dense slaw moving traffic. Driving skills are minimal in China, it was an ordeal simply to drive to our first test. The test was a speed test around a bumpy and dusty circuit. After the test we managed to break free of city and drive. We did reasonably well. The long drive to Erenhot was uneventful on the tarmac all the way. Incidentally there are speed cameras everywhere I bet we have gone through a number and gained some points. Hope we have exited, before fines can be applied. The usual reception committee was waiting for us, people everywhere many taking photographs. The drive to Erenhot was steadily climbing all the way and we drove over the Chinese Mongolian Plains, where poor farmers breed horses. Much excitement for tomorrow. I have been told it may take a few hours to get 120 cars over the border into Mongolia. We will need to take Passports, Chinese exit papers and V5 to prove ownership of the car.

Sri Lanka's president is banning two groups allegedly linked to the Easter bombings under emergency powers that came into effect on Tuesday. The office of President Maithripala Sirisena said in a statement Saturday evening that National Thawheed Jammath, or NTJ, and Jamathei Millathu Ibraheem, or JMI, would be banned by presidential decree.Presidential spokesman Dharmasri Ekanayake says the move allows the government to confiscate any property belonging to the two organizations. On Monday, officials confirmed that the alleged leader of the Muslim extremist group, an offshoot of NTJ, had died in one of the coordinated suicide bombings at churches and hotels that killed more than 250 people. The Islamic State group, meanwhile, claimed three of the militants who blew themselves up during a bloody police raid in Ampara linked to the Easter bombings. In a statement carried by the extremists' Aamaq news agency, IS identified the bombers by their noms du guerre as Abu Hammad, Abu Sufyan and Abu al-Qa'qa. It said they opened fire with automatic weapons and "after exhausting their ammunition, detonated ... their explosive belts."Sri Lanka's military said the gunfight Friday night near the town of Sammanthurai left 15 dead, including six children, when militants opened fire and set off explosives in suicide bombings as security forces closed in on their safe house.IS falsely claimed their militants killed 17 "disbelievers" in the attack. The militants often exaggerate their claims. The IS report carried a photograph of two men before an IS flag, one carrying a Chinese variant of the Kalashnikov rifle like the one found at the scene, another smiling.A girl and a woman survived the explosion but were critically injured and being treated at a hospital, police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.Photographs taken by The Associated Press show the charred remains of one child and the body of another wearing a green T-shirt with the words "good boy" written on the back. The bodies of an adult woman and man were found after the explosion with their clothes burned off.The military said security forces had recovered explosives, detonators, "suicide kits," military uniforms and IS flags during the raids in the area.Gunasekara said officers acting on information from intelligence officials also found 150 sticks of blasting gelatin and 100,000 small metal balls, as well as a van and clothing suspected of being used by those involved in the Easter attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels that left more than 250 people dead and hundreds injured —the bloodies assault linked to the IS in South Asia. The government on Saturday formally banned two extremist groups purportedly connected to the attacks, allowing officials to confiscate their property, presidential spokesman Dharmasri Ekanayake said. The government, crippled from a long political crisis between the president and prime minister last year, promised swift action to capture militants still at large.Sirisena said about 140 people had been identified as having links to the IS.A "major search operation has been undertaken," Sirisena said. "Every household in the country will be checked."Police confirmed that the leader of the local militant group blamed for the attack, Mohamed Zahran, died in the suicide bombing at the Shangri-La Hotel, one of six hotels and churches attacked. Zahran appeared in an IS video claiming responsibility for the coordinated assault, and authorities in both Sri Lanka and Australia confirmed links between IS and the attack.Sri Lanka is majority Buddhist but has significant Hindu and Muslim populations. About 7% are Christian, and most are Roman Catholic.

Jen transitioned into an accomplished acrobat and aerialist. She traveled internationally with Britney Spears’ World Tour, and appeared as the headliner at the prestigious Palazzo hotel in Las Vegas, New York’s Lincoln Center and the Shangri La Hotel in Dubai. She has appeared as a headliner at the prestigious Palazzo Hotel in Las Vegas, New York’s Lincoln Center, the Shangri-La Hotel in Dubai, and the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. In her new book, Everything is Possible, Jen writes about her faith, drive, and determination, and continues to prove to herself and others that nothing is impossible. I loved talking with Jen so much. I think this episode may have more surprises in it than any before. I won't spoil them all, but I will tell you she casually mentions being on tour with a very famous popstar and she tells the story about discovering that an iconic American Olympian is her biological sister. How's that for a teaser? I just know you're going to love this episode, love learning about Jen, and love hearing how God was so purposeful in Jen's circumstances to weave together such an amazing and powerful story. Jen has been so faithful in recognizing God's hand in her life and is using her story to make His name great. To learn more about Jen and her journey, determination and perseverance, you'll want to grab a copy of her book: Everything is Possible. {You can listen to the showHERE. Technology is now intrinsically linked to our lives and daily activities. So has the term ‘event technology’ become too broad a term to accurately describe the services available to event organisers? Jamie Vaughan from Eventbase joined the Talking Events podcast to discuss the topic and to look at how technology is being deployed in cross-genre scenarios. “The term ‘event tech’ is far too generic in my mind. The tech that affects events now comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, and at all touch points. It occurs at the point someone first finds out about a particular event, right up to the point where you touch it at registration. It also includes lighting, audio/visual, which is all relevant but very, very broad. I think that maybe someone should take the responsibility to re-categorise some of this into component parts!” During the podcast, Jamie also highlighted how the fundamental elements of certain technologies can be deployed across different types of event, citing some of the shows that Eventbase has worked on. “Events are all about communities coming together, which means you’ve got a common interest. The trick is to ensure that you are engaging those communities on the right level. So, for example, we do the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. At this event, there’s obviously a lot of music content within the event app that we provide. At a film, festival there will be trailers and movie content. At an innovation event, it’s about networking. The point is, we align the content around the specifics of the event. However, when you boil them all down there are actually tremendous similarities between them all.” We would like to extend our thanks to HeadBox.com and the Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard, London for their help in obtaining the venue we used for recording this series of podcasts.
