This is a sort of "marker" podcast -- my 400th. It's kind of my summing up on the subject of human identity and the origin of human satisfaction. The cast cites a recent interview (https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/im-a-new-kind-of-christian-jordan-peterson-on-faith-family-and-the-future-of-the-right/) with Jordan Peterson, and do note that the interviewer is almost as interesting as the interviewee I also quote John Zahl's distillation sermon from December 29th (https://events.locallive.tv/events/148984) -- which happened to be Mrs. Zahl's and my 51st Anniversary. The cast finishes with a little James Hilton (i.e., one's current fave) and... a 1978 cover of Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs. You'll see. I want you to think about the origins of your own psychic self. From where does "self-hood" come? Did you create yours? What do you want for yourself more than anything else in the world? What would you do anything to acquire? Oh, and is satisfaction in life about loving or being loved? When have you been happiest? (When have you been happy at all?) "All You Need Is (Be-)Love(dness)". Nothing else really matters -- or at least at the start of life (I mean infancy), and also at the end of (mortal) life (I mean death). Oh, and also at every felt point of need you have ever had to face. At the end of the day, a baby, a "disheartened" person (to quote Jackie Wilson from '68), and a dying person need one thing: Love From Outside. And may that Love ever "STAY" (J. Browne, '78). Podcast 400 is dedicated to Mary Cappleman Zahl.

Ibland fryser bilden. De går in.

This movie may not have the name recognition of some other 1939 films, such as ‘Gone With The Wind', ‘The Wizard of Oz', ‘Mr. Smith Goes To Washington', or ‘Stagecoach', but it may have inspired every boarding school movie you've ever seen, especially the ‘Harry Potter' series! The ladies have taken over the WriteLab Studio! #godsavedthelotus by recruiting Spud, The G, and Mint (the Fifth Beatle) for an evening of patriarchy-punching mayhem. Stories feature Love is Blind (but even more dystopian); a dream of life lost for capitalism; a love story to cars and the back seat; and dark magic friendship stones. From From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Shangri La. The hidden Buddhist lama PARADISE described in James Hilton's Lost Horizon (1933). He based it on the myth of an earthly Buddhist paradise in Tibet called Shambhala, where people lived long lives and there. was no war or famine. In 1942 the name was adopted as a code name for the US aircraft carrier Hornet, from which the great air raid on Tokyo was launched on 18 April. In 1945 it was further applied by President Roosevelt to CAMP DAVID in order to avoid identifying its location. The name is now applied to any imagined earthly paradise or idyllic utopia, even (with a touch of irony) a suburban one. Stories begin around the 23:10 mark. And, because they made me do it, this is your reminder that #girlspoop Regular episodes of Radio FreeWrite will resume in September 2023.Check out our website for a featured story from this week's episode, and be sure to follow us on Instagram (if that's your sort of thing). Bestaat Shangri-La echt?

Pure fictie.

As his love for Katherine blooms, Mr Chipping develops a sense of humour and a broad view of his role as a teacher and a friend to his students, becoming the beloved 'Mr Chips' to generations of schoolboys. Sweeping across four decades, Goodbye, Mr Chips features an extraordinary period of history, from the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s to Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s, and demonstrates that, through it all, love and a good sense of humour can make all the difference. Goodbye, Mr Chips is the beloved classic of generations of readers, and sure to delight people of all ages.

Have you ever wondered why you have heard of the mythical place of Shangri-La?'Lost Horizon' by James Hilton is a utopian (although arguably dystopian) fictional adventure of 4 Westerners captured and held against their will. They remain in limbo in the Lamasery of Shangri-La high up in the unexplored mountaintops of Tibet. Although on the surface it seems to be an almost ideal existence there is a suspicious secret that adds a dark side to the tale. There are many themes to explore in the book including (but not limited to): the ideal man/character, disillusionment, East vs West mentality and what happens as we grow old.I summarised the book as follows. "This is easily the best book I have read in a while! Immersed is not a word strong enough to articulate just how deeply I enjoyed this, it really ticked off all my interest boxes. This is highly subjective as it's not a standout for it's prose or style, it's just my type of book. As tension steadily rose between European powers in the 1930s, a different kind of battle was already raging across the Himalayas. Teams of mountaineers from Great Britain, Nazi Germany, and the United States were all competing to be the first to climb the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest and K2. Unlike climbers today, they had few photographs or maps, no properly working oxygen systems, and they wore leather boots and cotton parkas. Amazingly, and against all odds, they soon went farther and higher than anyone could have imagined. And as they did, their story caught the world's attention. The climbers were mobbed at train stations, and were featured in movies and plays. James Hilton created the mythical land of Shangri-La in Lost Horizon, while an English eccentric named Maurice Wilson set out for Tibet in order to climb Mount Everest alone. And in the darkened corridors of the Third Reich, officials soon discovered the propaganda value of planting a Nazi flag on top of the world's highest mountains --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

I was fascinated by these two fictional tails of western men who found awakening, purpose and a deep sense of peace during journeys to the mountains of Northern India and Tibet. I always mused about this type of journey but my path led elsewhere. It was not my “karma.” Are there those who actually followed a calling that seemed to have one purpose but completely changed their lives? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Michael Schauch, had just this experience and found that synchronicity and destiny may lead us to Karma. Michael Schauch is a mountaineer, entrepreneur and storyteller who lives to explore remote places around the world and to share the depth and beauty of human connection he discovers along the way. With early success as an entrepreneur at age 15, and more than 20 years of global financial investment experience, he brings his business acumen and altruistic heart to lead and support local and international mentorship, fundraising and educational initiatives. These include the education of girls and student mentorship in Nepal, outdoor youth leadership for those facing barriers to access nature and holistic Indigenous leadership development in British Columbia. He holds an MBA from Queen’s University and is a member of the Explorers Club. He and his partner in adventure, Chantal, make their base camp in Squamish, nestled in British Columbia’s rugged Coast Mountains and temperate rainforests. On today’s episode, I talked with James Lamdin Founder and Director of Vintage and Pre-owned watches at Analog/Shift, a vintage and pre-owned watch boutique located in New York City, if our main character Robert was a New Yorker instead of a Brit, he’d be well acquainted with James who picked Frank Capra’s 1937 epic, Lost Horizon. Based on the 1933 novel of the same name written by James Hilton, Lost Horizon follows the story of Robert Conway, a war hero, author, and soon-to-be British foreign secretary who is fed up with a world that is progressively getting more and more aggressive and greedy by the second. After rescuing 90 white people like the film’s title storybook opening actually says, Conway his brother George, and three other refugees are unknowingly hijacked and are brought crashing down to a remote mountain range where they encounter a secret valley called Shangri-La where peace and prosperity reigns, for some, for others, they see it as a jail cell. So it back, relax, and spread peace on earth and goodwill toward men. You can purchase Lost Horizon here Check out the amazing collection Analog/Shift has for all of your favorite watch geeks. This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news. A cross-departmental team will investigate the recent case of improper vaccines trading. The group has been established by the State Council and will be led by the China Food and Drug Administration, the public health watchdog. Senior officials from the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Ministry of Supervision are deputy heads. Officials from other departments including the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Cyberspace Administration are also at the team. The State Council, China's Cabinet, has also formed a supervision team to oversee the investigation. Large quantities of improperly stored and expired vaccines have allegedly been sold across the country since 2011. Twenty-nine pharmaceutical companies have been implicated in sales, and 16 institutions in purchases. More than 130 people have been questioned and 69 criminal cases have been filed. Bernhard Schwartlander, World Health Organization representative in China, has called the national immunization system "one of the best in the world" in an interview with Xinhua News Agency recently. The World Health Organization has confidence in all Chinese vaccine manufacturers, based on over 15 years of working closely with the national vaccine regulators. Dr. Schwartlander points out that the biggest risk is that parents might avoid routine vaccination of their children as a result of diminished confidence in the system. He calls for urgent action to restore public trust. This is NEWS Plus Special English. A 3-year-old toddler has been inoculated against hand-foot-and-mouth disease in Kunming City in southwest China's Yunnan Province. This is the first the province has received the vaccination. The human diploid cell vaccine developed in China is the first against enterovirus 71, or EV71, a primary cause of the disease. In tests, the vaccine prevented 97 percent of test subjects from contracting EV71. The vaccine was developed by the Institute of Medical Biology attach of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is caused by a group of enterovirus including EV71, which causes heart and lung complications that can lead to death. It has become one of the most ubiquitous infectious diseases in China due to a lack of vaccines. Infants and children under five years old are most vulnerable. From May 2008 to December 2015, China reported almost 14 million HFMD cases, of which 3,391 resulted in fatalities. China's food and drug watchdog approved production of the vaccine in December. The first batch of 360,000 shots of vaccine have been transported nationwide with vaccination beginning in Beijing, Guangxi and Yunnan. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Beijing police have stepped up efforts to mobilize the masses and fight terrorism in the capital. Two whistle-blowers were rewarded with 3,000 yuan, roughly 460 U.S. dollars, and 2,000 yuan, for providing information on terrorism and reporting hazardous items on the subway. The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau says one of them reported a foreigner suspected of being involved in terrorist activities, but no detailed information was available on the case. More than 500 people have been rewarded with upward of 600,000 yuan by Beijing police since the city announced rewards for terror informants in March 2014. According to the incentive program, whistle-blowers are awarded between 1,000 yuan and 40,000 yuan for reporting information on terrorism. To better cope with the risk posed by terrorist activities, the bureau has organized six rounds of anti-terror drills and provided professional training to more than 2,500 personnel over the past year. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Female employees in Beijing who give birth to a second child have their maternity leave extended by up to three months. That is according to a revised regulation on family planning adopted by the city recently. The regulation was based on the revised national Law on Population and Family Planning adopted on Jan 1. The law allows all Chinese couples to have two children, putting an end to the national policy that allowed only one child for most couples living in urban areas. Under the new policy, the female employees' husband can also have 15 days leave after the child is born. The regulation gives female employees maternal leave for as long as 218 days, including 98 days mandated by national law and 30 days offered by local regulation. In addition, they are allowed to have extra leave of between one and three months, with the consent of their employers. The new amendments also include allowing some people, including those with one disabled child, to have a third baby. Local authorities say allowing female employees to have additional leave was brought in to maintain the physical and psychological health of mothers and children, considering the burden on the social security fund and employers. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Chinese search engine giant Baidu has developed a machine-learning algorithm that predicts whether crowds are likely to form at certain locations within two hours, which could be used to prevent stampedes. The algorithm uses data from Baidu's map app. Baidu's Big Data Lab published a research report studying the number of map queries and the number of users in an area. The company's user statistics show that its map app accounts for over 70 per cent of China's mapping services market. Users search for ideal travel routes using Baidu Maps. The lab began to concentrate on how to predict crowds in certain areas following the Shanghai stampede on New Year's Eve in Dec 2014, when 36 people were killed during celebrations on the Bund riverfront. Using the map data, the researchers found a way to determine the numbers in real time and trigger warnings 30 minutes to two hours ahead of time if unusually large crowds were expected to gather. This occurs when the number of queries for a specific location crosses a set threshold. Machine learning is applied so that the algorithm can learn from search queries and better predict future crowds. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. One physics teacher made almost 19,000 yuan, roughly 3,000 U.S. dollars, in an hour for his online course, but educational authorities are calling for a ban on this teaching model. A total of 2,600 students have signed up for Wang Yu's tutoring course on high school physics, which is carried out online at a cost of 9 yuan for each participant. The seven classes have attracted almost 10,000 students in total. An online portal hosting the course charges 20 percent of Wang's income as a fee. A college English teacher also using an online teaching platform says she earns around 50,000 yuan in two months, with the largest class attracting 1,700 online students. Online education services are mushrooming in China. One tutoring site offering eight middle and high school courses boasts 15 million registered student users. Online teachers are generally happy with the extra income. Wang says the Internet has greatly reduced travel costs and allows more flexible instruction. Low costs and high efficiency of online classes have also attracted various parents. One parent explained that compared to traditional after-class lectures that cost one or two hundred yuan per hour, online equivalents are available for less than 10 yuan. However, it has raised eyebrows among local educational authorities. An official from the Education Bureau in Nanjing, the capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, said the city bans teachers from offering paid tutoring to students including online services. An ancient town in southwest China's Yunnan Province is struggling to restore its status as a popular tourist site after it lost many of its traditional wooden buildings in a fire two years ago. Populated largely by ethnic Tibetans, Dukezong was made famous by British writer James Hilton's 1933 novel "Lost Horizon". In January 2014, a blaze started by an electric heater destroyed more than 340 houses in the town, or almost 20 percent of the total. Around 15 percent of the homes and shops have reopened so far. By mid-March, more than 900 million yuan, roughly 140 million U.S. dollars, had been spent on renovation work, with a total budget of 1.2 billion yuan. Though Dukezong declared its reopening earlier in January, rebuilding work is continuing and the number of visitors has been restricted. Huang Guoying, a shopkeeper who settled in Dukezong in 2005, gets around 10 percent of the customers she did before the fire. As it is a low season for tourism, only 2,000 people visit the ancient town each day on average. Officials and shopkeepers say they don't expect a significant increase in tourist numbers over the summer. This is Special English. After his giant Yellow Duck debuted in Hong Kong three years ago, Florentijn Hofman has made a giant pink Floating Fish for Wuzhen, an ancient water town in Zhejiang province. It is the first time the Dutch artist has made an animal-related work on the Chinese mainland. The 15-meter-long, 7-meter-high fish is made from thousands of swimming kickboards for children. It floats on a pond at a theater in Wuzhen. It was shown to the public recently as part of the Wuzhen International Contemporary Art Exhibition. Hofman said he got inspiration from Wuzhen and from a Chinese folk story about a fish jumping the "dragon gate" bringing luck and wealth to the local people. Six months ago, he was invited by a local cultural company to create a work for the art show, which features work by influential artists. Hofman then visited Wuzhen, one of the country's most popular tourist towns, where he saw windows of wooden houses with fish sculptures and carp swimming in rivers. He says that was where his inspiration came from. He says the theater looks like a sea world and the dolphin-shaped water area fits well with the fish installation. He chose pink for his fish so that it would stand out from its surroundings. The houses in Wuzhen have white walls and gray tiles. This is Special English. A rare Assam macaque has been returned to a nature reserve after being kept as a pet by a local villager for 14 years. The animal is now living in a nature reserve in southwest China's Yunnan Province. The local nature reserve bureau received a call from a villager saying that he wanted to free a monkey he had raised. Staff members went to his home and found an Assam macaque, a protected animal, but the villager did not seem to be aware of that. The macaque is around 15 years old and weighs 30 kilograms. There are only around 8,000 Assam macaques in China.

It's beginning to look not like Christmas They say you can never go home again, just like you can't step into the same river twice. Things change. Have you ever been to a class reunion? “Cigars had burned low, and we were beginning to sample the disillusionment that usually afflicts old school friends who have met again as men and found themselves with less in common than they had believed they had.”– James Hilton, Lost Horizon“My town had grown and changed and my friend along with it. Now returning, as changed to my friend as my town was to me, I distorted his picture, muddied his memory. When I went away I had died, and so became fixed and unchangeable. My return caused only confusion and uneasiness. Although they could not say it, my old friends wanted me gone so that I could take my proper place in the pattern of remembrance – and I wanted to go for the same reason.”– John Steinbeck, Travels With CharleyYou're probably thinking, “Roy and Pennie must have gone back to their hometown for a High School class reunion.” Nope. The last class reunion we attended was nearly 20 years ago. I'm not writing these things for me. I'm writing them for you. We Americans have idyllic, Norman Rockwell-type expectations of the holidays. A TV show about a bar in Boston began with a theme song, “Where everybody knows your name. And they're always glad you came.” And when overweight, unemployed, nothing-special Norm Peterson walked into that bar, everyone looked up and shouted “Norm!” Each of us secretly wants to be Norm Peterson. We want to be known. Cheers became one of the most popular shows in the history of television. “The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.”– Maya AngelouIn his book, The Architecture of Happiness, Alain de Botton describes “home” as we tend to remember it: “The house has grown into a knowledgeable witness. It has been party to early seductions, it has watched homework being written, it has observed swaddled babies freshly arrived from hospital, it has been surprised in the middle of the night by whispered conferences in the kitchen. It has experienced winter evenings when its windows were as cold as bags of frozen peas and midsummer dusks when its brick walls held the warmth of newly baked bread. It has provided psychological sanctuary. It has been a guardian of identity. Over the years, its owners have returned from periods away and, on looking around them, remembered who they were.”We go home with an idealized memory of a place where everyone listens and cares and loves us for who we are, a place where we're known and everything is okay. And what we find when we get there is our family. We're never quite prepared for the selfishness of Carol, the laziness of Lee, the assertiveness of Sarah and the insensitivity of Bob. And Gary, well, he's just a jackass. Pennie says Chapel Dulcinea receives a large number of wedding cancellations right after the holidays. Evidently, “meeting the family” was enough to break the engagement. Then I heard Dr. Grant tell a roomful of students that clinical psychologists see a spike in requests for counseling right after the holidays as well. But then http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/?ShowMe=Home7 (Dr. Grant said) something profound: “The opposite of depression isn't ‘Yippee!' The opposite of depression is gratitude.” So this year I have a plan: Rather than trying to have a good Christmas, I'm going to make sure that everyone around me has one. My plan is to be silently thankful. Constantly, consciously thankful. I'm going to see past Carol's selfishness and like her anyway. I'm going to accommodate the laziness of Lee. l plan to submit to the assertiveness of Sarah and understand the insensitivity of Bob. I'm even going to seek out Gary and show an interest in whatever he wants to talk about. If my...
