How do we navigate seismic shifts in our industries and our lives while striving to remain true to ourselves and those we care about? In this episode, Jerry sits down with Randy Goodman, recently retired Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Nashville, to reflect on a career arc that spans decades of change, challenge, and profound personal growth. Randy opens up about his time at the helm of Sony Music Nashville, leading through a rapidly transforming business landscape, the global pandemic, and the social upheaval of recent years. Together, Jerry and Randy explore the concept of "ending well," and what it means to finish a significant chapter of one's life with intention, care, and grace. The conversation wades through the joys and trials of artist development in an era defined by digital disruption, the decline of traditional radio, and the emergence of platforms like TikTok. Randy shares how he shepherded his team and roster of artists through extraordinary circumstances, and how executive coaching and a sense of curiosity became his compass in uncertain times. Website: ChurchOfJesusChrist.org The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints   BYUEducationWeek   -------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the Strength of Youth To help you find the Way and to help you make Christ's doctrine the guiding influence in your life, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has prepared a new resource, a revised version of For the Strength of Youth.   For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.   Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! Today, our interdenominational Christian ministry serves the poor in primarily 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Thanks to our faithful donors, we are able to provide food, housing, healthcare, education, fresh water, emergency relief, micro-enterprise solutions and much more. We are proud to have fed millions of people and provided more than 15.7 billion dollars in aid. Our faith inspires us to be an organization built on compassion, and motivated by love. Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. We believe that we can show His love by serving the “least of these” on this earth as Christ challenged us to do in Matthew 25. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dustin Collins over Zoom video! Momentum continues to build for Billboard No. 1 singer-songwriter and Georgia-born Dustin Collins, who recently announced his forthcoming Working Man album, as he signs with New Vision Artist Management's Mike Kraski and New Revolution Entertainment's Jeff Solima. Kraski began his career in sales and distribution at CBS Records and eventually made his way to Sony Music Nashville, where he worked with Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Montgomery Gentry among many others, and was eventually elevated to executive VP and general manager for the Nashville division. In 2003, Kraski left Sony and launched an artist friendly label that was aptly named Equity Records. As President and CEO, he launched the career of Little Big Town. Since 2007, Kraski has worked in artist management, consulting and music publishing at Tenacity Management and at M-Pact Music Group and recently partnered with legendary artist manager John Dorris to launch New Vision Artist Management.Solima, whose career started at Music Matters, who managed Tracy Lawrence (16 of 17 singles were all No. 1) and Clay Walker (debut single No. 1), opened the multi-award-winning Hitsquad Promotions in 1993. In 2006, he co-founded New Revolution with partner Rob Dalton, and in 2008, he co-founded Bigger Picture Promotions with partner Michael Powers. Bigger Picture became the No. 5 record label in 18 months, setting the No. 1 record at the time of 9 consecutive No. 1 singles, and launched Craig Campbell, Chris Janson, and relaunched Chris Cagle, Uncle Kracker's “Smile,” and Kid Rock. New Revolution clients have included Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert, Martina McBride, Lee Brice, Gloriana, Uncle Kracker, Jesse James Decker, among others, while delivering Emerson Drive's only No. 1 with “Moments” and relaunching Big & Rich with four consecutive Top 15 singles.Produced by industry veterans Buddy Cannon (Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, Reba McEntire) and Bill McDermott (Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Brad Paisley), Working Man is slated for release this summer from DCDL Entertainment. A portion of proceeds from the lead single and album will benefit GUMI (Glad You Made It) Camp USA. GUMI focuses on providing U.S. veterans with the tools they need to help them heal after deployment overseas and enable them to re-enter society. Working Man follows Collins' latest album, It's Been Awhile, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers South Central Albums chart. His independent single “Cold Dead Hands” ascended to No. 1 on the Billboard Singles Sales chart. Terry and Leigh unpack what happens when opportunities are met with an abundance mindset and you really believe that the best is yet to come. With an impressive array of professional experience, Leigh Holt continually draws from her entertainment, sports, music, marketing and sponsorship backgrounds in her current role as an artist manager and founder & owner of maddjett. BehindTheNote.com/64 We cover a lot in this 45 minute episode with Rick Barker, Taylor Swift's first manager. Some questions we answer are: • When is a good time to hire a manager • How to build a loyal audience • And of course, Advice For A Successful Music Career ;) Grab a pen and paper, take notes, and then get to work! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rick Barker strives to teach artists how to be artists. With major changes in the music industry and digital world, record labels expect artists to build their online presence and fan base, become great songwriters and performers, and ultimately create their own buzz. Labels no longer spend thousands of dollars to “develop” an act. Today, labels are interested in investing in small businesses. Therefore, it is the artist’s job to treat their art as a business and become an attractive partner to a record label. Between formerly managing music superstar Taylor Swift, serving as the Social Media Mentor to finalists on FOX’s American Idol, and working as a private consultant to entities such as Big Machine Label Group and Live Nation, Rick Barker’s influence on the music industry is without question. Utilizing his extensive experience in radio, Rick created the “Nashville To You” radio tour, which played an important role in the early development of several acts, including Taylor Swift and Sugarland. With marketing tactics featured in Billboard and other well-known publications, Rick has dedicated his life to helping independent artists plot out the most efficient strategies for turning their music into a career. He is also the co-author of “The $150,000 Music Degree”, a music business e-book that, upon its release, was the most downloaded book on Noisetrade and he created Social Media For Music, the first ever step by step instruction course dedicated to the Music Industry. He was the first record promoter hired by Big Machine’s Scott Borchetta, where he had a role in the label’s first Number One record with singer-songwriter Jack Ingram. Rick later went on to found his own marketing and consulting firm, at which his first client was Sony Music Nashville. He is also the mastermind behind Music Industry Blueprint, a development service teaching artists from around the world everything they need to know about the complicated music business. We hope Rick’s free resources inspire you to take control of your career and become a business-minded artist who is ready to take on this crazy industry. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions.

After a 15 year career in radio, Rick moved over to the record company side in 2004 after accepting a job with Big Machine Records. While there he developed a unique touring model which helped create opportunities for recently signed artists with or without a national radio single to get in front of audiences, called Nashville To You. The concept was no matter where you live in the country, he could bring Nashville to you. Some of the first acts he took out were Sugarland, Josh Turner and Rodney Atkins. Rick LOVES to teach and share with others and has observed that too often people waste time, energy and money becasue of lack of direction. His goal is to assist as many people as possible who are interested in pursuing a career in the music business. Most recently he has been a consultant to Sony Music Nashville and Big Machine Records and owns his own marketing and consulting company Music Industry Blueprint.

Country Music Made Me

Nate Smith is a Nashville based singer/songwriter signed to Sony Music Nashville and Sony Music Publishing. Nate joins Country Music Made Me to discuss his early years of being inspired by a wide range of musical artists from Garth Brooks to Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson to Nirvana. He reminisces about his days spent annoying his older brother by constantly imitating the moves of Elvis and the vocal inflections of Garth. Those influences helped create a love for music that inspired him to begin singing at the age of 9 and to pick up the guitar at 13 to try and learn his favorite Blink 182 songs.  Nate talks about dropping out of high school and following his friends from his home in California to Oregon to chase his Punk Rock dreams, a journey that would last only a brief moment before he moved back to California. Once home his focus changed to pop music and in his words, "becoming the next Ryan Cabrera." After booking meetings with some Major Label's while digging around MySpace, Nate soon received an offer from a Nashville based record company that would lead to yet another turn, one towards the world of Country Music. Once in Music City Nate began to grow as not only an artist but also a song writer, but following a very difficult divorce he made the decision to move home to Paradise California, leaving not only Nashville but also his dreams of a career in Music.   Nate describes the moment in 2018 when a wild fire tore through his hometown of Paradise, taking with it everything he owned and forever changing his future. Shortly after the catastrophic event Nate picked up the guitar and dove back into writing, crafting a song inspired by his home town called One Of These Days. Although his focus wasn't on reigniting a career in Music the opportunities that came following the release of the song would lead him back not only to music but also a place he thought he would never return to; Nashville. His debut release in 2019, Wildfire, and subsequent releases in 2020, Reckless and Under my Skin, would quickly gain him notoriety by not only fans but also major labels and in 2021 he signed to Sony Music Nashville. Finally, Nate talks about the wild ride he's been on since making the official move back to Nashville in July of 2020, a journey that included a solo drive across the U.S. from California to his new home in Music City, and what it's been like dealing with the emotions that have come from finding major success in such a short period of time.
