In today's fast-paced and competitive business world, finding a sense of purpose and meaning in our work can be a challenge. Many business owners strive to build successful ventures while navigating the pressures and uncertainties that come with entrepreneurship. However, some entrepreneurs have discovered a unique approach to a therapy business—one that involves seeing God as their business partner. In this blog post, we explore the concept of God as a business partner and how it can transform both personal and professional aspects of our lives. Meeting Cindy Isaac, LPC In a recent podcast episode titled "Episode 110: God as my Business Partner Series (1 of 4)," Dawn Gabriel had the privilege of interviewing Cindy Isaac, a licensed therapist and owner of a faith-based practice in Southern California. Through their conversation, they shed light on integrating faith into the counseling profession and how it can impact one's business. View Therapy Clients through the Lens of God's Love One of the key insights offered by Cindy Isaac is the importance of viewing clients through the lens of God's love. "God loves them unconditionally, no matter what they're going through." Regardless of their beliefs or struggles, Cindy emphasizes that God loves each individual unconditionally. By recognizing this, therapists can create a safe and empathetic environment for their clients. This perspective not only enhances the therapeutic process but also allows therapists to provide care that goes beyond superficial conversations. Cindys states "Love is the driving force in my business.” Business Foundation in Faith Cindy Isaac explains that seeing God as her business partner has transformed how she views her therapy practice. "My business is a deeper purpose for me to help people and be a part of God's plan." Rather than succumbing to the anxieties and pressures of running a business, Cindy recognizes that her practice is ultimately God's. This perspective alleviates the fear and uncertainty often associated with entrepreneurship. With the understanding that her business is a gift from God, Cindy is able to make decisions more confidently and embrace a deeper purpose in her work. "Remembering that this is God's business takes away the fear and anxiety of business ownership."  Grounding Business Values in Love Love serves as the guiding principle for Cindy Isaac's practice. She describes her core values as roots, with love being the soil that nourishes them. By prioritizing love and care for others in her practice, Cindy provides therapy services with sincerity and compassion. "I approach every client out of the understanding of them being loved by God." This emphasis on love extends not only to clients but also to her team, creating a harmonious work environment and fostering a sense of community. Trusting in God's Guidance As a business leader and therapist, Cindy Isaac acknowledges the challenges that arise in decision-making and business operations. However, she finds solace and direction by turning to God through prayer. She recognizes that she has been equipped with unique skills and talents that allow her to navigate these challenges. By trusting in God's guidance and accepting that her business is part of a bigger plan, Cindy finds peace in the face of uncertainty. Conclusion: "I give back in love because God first loved me." Integrating faith into business can be a transformative journey, as exemplified by Cindy Isaac's approach to counseling and entrepreneurship. By viewing clients through the lens of God's unconditional love and seeing her business as a partnership with God, Cindy has created an environment that fosters healing, growth, and purpose. Her emphasis on love as the foundation for her business values has cultivated a strong sense of community and brought a deeper meaning to her work.   As we reflect on Cindy Isaac's insights, we are reminded of the power of faith in guiding our professional lives. Whether we are business owners, entrepreneurs, or employees, embracing God as our business partner can bring clarity, purpose, and peace in the midst of a dynamic and challenging business landscape. By aligning our actions and decisions with our faith, we can cultivate a harmonious relationship between our spirituality and our work, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and impactful journey as business professionals. Being in nature is often thought of as a form of therapy itself. The serenity and calmness it imparts, and the tranquility one feels when surrounded by nature, is unparalleled. Dawn Gabriel sat down with the founder and CEO of Head First Health, Jenna Quinn Lancor, to discuss the spiritual side of hiking.  Meeting Jenna Quinn Lancor With a notable presence in the field of therapy, Jenna Quinn Lancor chatted brilliantly about the connections between spirituality and nature. Through her virtual group practice, Head First Health, her team specializes in treating millennial women dealing with anxiety, OCD, depression, and life transitions incorporating the mind body spirit approach. A truly holistic approach to mental health!  Conscious Collaboration Series at Head First Health Dawn was intrigued by Jenna's ‘conscious collaboration series', a monthly feature where they partner with a functional medicine doctor or holistic wellness practitioner to educate their staff about holistic health and well-being. It was heartening to see that Jenna's practice places such an emphasis on looking at a client holistically. Engaging the Spiritual Element  In her conversation with Dawn, Jenna candidly shared the reason behind why she wanted to participate in the podcast - the lack of discussion around spirituality in therapist and business owner conversations. She passionately believes that the spiritual component of well-being is often overlooked and needs more attention. Experiences with Nature and Spirituality Jenna spoke about her life-changing hiking and backpacking experiences. Interestingly, the physical suffering from hiking morphed into a spiritual breakthrough for Jenna. She expressed how she genuinely connects with nature and the divine when she's on those trails. According to Jenna, once you experience that kind of spiritual awakening, it's challenging to forget it, and it leaves a lasting impact. In Tune with Spirituality – A Guide for Enthusiasts If you are keen on exploring your spiritual side through nature but do not know where to start, Jenna suggests starting with something simple available around you. She emphasizes the importance of slowing down and practicing mindfulness.  Next time you cross a plant or a rose, just pause for a moment and try describing it in your head without using any names or labels. Notice the subtleties, the intricate patterns, and how every small detail contributes to the whole. This simple exercise is a great way to usher in mindfulness and create an environment conducive to spirituality. Conclusion Jenna's insightful conversation around spirituality, hiking, and therapy was genuinely enlightening. It drives home the point that sometimes answers to some profound questions lie in nature itself. It's all about taking a pause, observing, and understanding. By slowing down and letting go of the facades of daily life, it becomes easier to connect with the divine and the deeper truths within ourselves. So, go out, find your spot in nature, and enjoy a wonderful spiritual escape - And just like Jenna said, "You are going to keep crying until you don't feel like crying anymore." After all, it's not about having a breakdown, it's about having a breakthrough! As they delve into the profound connection between nature and spirituality, they explore the transformative power of hiking and the ways it can enhance one's spiritual journey. Gordon Brewer's Background Gordon Brewer, the host of "The Practice of Therapy" podcast and the founder of Kingsport Counseling Associates, shares his extensive experience in the world of therapy and private practice. He discusses his passion for podcasting, as well as his love for the Appalachian Mountains, where he often embarks on hiking adventures that provide him with solace and inspiration. The Connection Between Spirituality and Hiking Gordon explains that his daily practice involves spending time on the “Green Belt”, a picturesque trail system near his home. While this may not be classified as rigorous hiking, it serves as an opportunity for reflection, meditation, and prayer. Gordon Brewer: "Being in nature gives us a whole new reference point to bring some peace, bring some comfort, and to feel connected."The natural surroundings and the act of being in nature positively influence his spiritual well-being, offering a sense of cleansing and meaning. Gordon also highlights the intriguing concept of mystery that comes with hiking, as each bend in the trail presents an element of anticipation and discovery. Benefits of Hiking as a Spiritual Practice Dawn and Gordon delve into the myriad of benefits that hiking as a spiritual practice can bring. They emphasize how hiking, whether done alone or in the company of others, creates a space for deep connections, transformative conversations, and a profound sense of accomplishment. The physical exertion involved in hiking also serves as a natural intervention for depression, as it helps reorient the mind and stimulates different thought processes. Dawn Gabriel: "It's like connecting to something bigger than yourself, this felt sense of community in a spiritual way." Additionally, the practice of focusing on one's surroundings and engaging all the senses cultivates mindfulness and fosters a greater appreciation for the beauty and interconnectedness of the natural world. Tips for Implementing a Spiritual Practice of Hiking Gordon Brewer: "Spirituality is paying attention to the stuff we don't normally notice, connecting to the greater than in some way." To incorporate hiking as a spiritual practice, Gordon suggests integrating various elements that align with one's faith or personal beliefs. For example, listening to spiritually enriching podcasts or instrumental music while hiking can offer a meditative experience. Gordon also mentions the importance of grounding exercises, such as paying attention to breathing, muscle tension, and the sensory experiences of temperature, smells, and visual details. The act of being intentional about noticing and appreciating these aspects of nature allows for a deeper connection with the divine and a broader sense of spiritual presence. Conclusion As the conversation draws to a close, Dawn and Gordon express their shared belief in the healing power of nature and the need to move beyond the confines of technology and work-centric routines. They encourage listeners to embrace the practice of hiking as a spiritual journey, allowing it to bring about a shift in perspective and an opportunity for personal growth. By opening oneself to the mysteries of nature, exploring the present moment, and engaging in spiritual practices such as reflection, meditation, and prayer, hikers can discover a meaningful connection with both themselves and the greater spiritual realm. Introduction: In this episode of "Soul Care for Therapists," host Dawn Gabriel welcomes Malia Doss, a licensed marriage and family therapist with 18 years of experience. Malia's diverse background includes roles as a certified public accountant and an executive in the music industry. She transitioned into therapy after realizing the profound impact of being part of other people's lives and the richness it brought to her own journey. The Intersection of Spirituality and Therapy: Malia and Dawn delve deep into the differences between spiritual direction and therapy. While both have their merits, they emphasize that spiritual direction offers a unique approach to understanding oneself and one's relationship with the divine. Malia recalls her initial arrogance when starting her training in spiritual direction, thinking it was similar to therapy. However, she soon realized the profound differences and the depth of spiritual direction could offer. The Power of Spiritual Direction: Spiritual direction provides a space for individuals to explore their relationship with God and their spiritual journey. Unlike therapy, which often focuses on problem-solving, spiritual direction is about deepening one's connection with the divine. Malia mentions Larry Crabb's' work on the "upstairs and downstairs room," highlighting the complexities of weaving in one's relationship with the Lord into therapy. She believes that everyone is on a unique journey, and spiritual direction can be a powerful tool for those ready to delve deeper into their faith. Community and Support: Malia emphasizes the importance of community, especially for therapists. She reflects on the challenges she faced when starting out and the lack of generosity she sometimes encountered from peers. However, she believes in the power of finding "your people" and building a supportive community. Dawn echoes this sentiment, mentioning her initiative, "Sacred Space Groups for therapists," which focuses on integrating spirituality and preventing burnout. Tips/Action Steps: Self-awareness: Recognize where you are on your spiritual journey. If you find yourself constantly thinking about your relationship with the Lord and seeking more, consider spiritual direction. Seek Mentorship: Find a spiritual director or mentor who can guide you on your journey, ask questions, and provide valuable insights. Build Community: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can support and uplift you. Whether it's a formal group or informal gathering, community is essential. Summary: In this enlightening episode, Malia Doss shares her insights on the profound impact of spiritual direction and its differences from therapy. Both Malia and Dawn emphasize the importance of community and mentorship in one's spiritual journey. Whether you're a therapist or someone seeking a deeper spiritual connection, this episode offers valuable insights and actionable steps to enrich your journey.   Links and Resources Sacred Space Community Groups - with Dawn Soul Care Retreats: Exclusively for therapists who want to recharge in a deep and fulfilling way. Unpacking the "Post-Conference Blues" In the latest episode of the "Soul Care for Therapists" podcast, host Dawn Gabriel delves into a phenomenon familiar to many professionals: the feelings of emptiness and longing after a significant event, aptly termed "Post-Conference Blues."  Understanding the Post-Conference Blues: Have you ever felt a noticeable drop in spirits after an exhilarating event? Dawn Gabriel, like many therapists, often feels this way after attending a particularly engaging conference. The euphoria of the event can make returning to the daily routine of work feel even more mundane and challenging. Dawn likens this feeling to inflating a balloon to its fullest, representing the peak of the event, only to have it slowly deflate upon returning to reality, mirroring the emotional downturn many experience. Digging Deeper: Spiritual Insights  Beyond the physical and emotional aspects, Dawn delves into the spiritual dimension of our lives. She emphasizes that we aren't merely professionals going about our jobs; we have a spiritual essence that coexists with our human side. This dual existence can sometimes lead to an internal tension, as if we're straddling two distinct worlds: our tangible daily life and a profound spiritual domain. However, Dawn cautions against becoming overly obsessed with chasing the highs of these events, which can inadvertently turn them into "idols" or objects of excessive desire. When You Experience the Post-conference Blues Her advice? Engage in a heartfelt conversation with God or any higher power you believe in. Sharing your feelings and seeking guidance can be as therapeutic as confiding in a close friend. To reinforce her point, Dawn cites a thought-provoking verse from the Bible, Jeremiah 2:13, which encourages seeking genuine, profound fulfillment rather than fleeting satisfactions. Don't hide from your feelings, but embrace them and see where they take you as you share them with God and other people.  Links and Resources Sacred Space Community Groups - with Dawn Soul Care Retreats: Exclusively for therapists who want to recharge in a deep and fulfilling way. In this episode of Soul Care for Therapists, host Dawn Gabriel welcomes Julia Nepini, a clinical and forensic social worker, group practice owner, consultant, and podcast host. Julia's counseling practice in southeastern Massachusetts boasts 16 clinicians serving the whole family and running numerous groups. She's also a devoted mom to a 10-year-old daughter and two bonus boys. Finding Balance Amidst Multiple Roles Julia shares her journey of transitioning from a hospital job to building her own group practice. With a focus on her values, she emphasizes the importance of staying grounded and true to oneself while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood and entrepreneurship. She admits the challenge of maintaining a sense of control and acknowledges the tendency to overwork, but she's found solace in writing, meditating, and staying aligned with her core values. "What I'll say is it is not easy... It has the potential to bring out all of your stuff... So I think a lot of it is awareness, and I think it's clarity on the things that truly matter." Prioritizing Family Time Julia delves into the challenge of prioritizing family time, especially during the summer months when school is out. As a mom in a split schedule arrangement, she makes a conscious effort to dedicate Mondays and Tuesdays to quality time with her daughter, acknowledging that while she can't be completely off the grid, finding a balance between work and family is crucial. She emphasizes the importance of being present with her children and setting an example for them. "But it's hard looking back on the summer. I would say 80% of those days, she is my focus, but we can't be completely out of the loop and people do still need things. I've got a great team... but I'm gonna say 80 20 was a win this summer." Integrating Spirituality and Business Julia discusses how spirituality plays a significant role in her life and business. She likens her relationship with God to that of a business partner and speaks of finding guidance and reassurance through her spiritual beliefs. She reflects on her journey of integrating spirituality with her work and highlights the importance of community in fostering a deeper connection with one's faith. "So I've been fortunate enough to have some really good foundation, but I've struggled to find community, and I love this notion of being able to incorporate that in your practice." The Compassionate Climb Podcast Julia's podcast, The Compassionate Climb, provides a platform for discussing the intersection of success in business with maintaining integrity and core values. With a focus on sharing the stories of how individuals reached their current positions, the podcast also offers expert advice from professionals in fields like law and finance. Julia emphasizes the value of community and the positive impact it can have on personal and professional growth. Tips for Balancing Business, Motherhood, and Faith Julia offers a final piece of advice for therapists and business owners striving to find equilibrium between their roles. She encourages self-compassion, reminding listeners that they are likely doing better than they realize. She stresses the importance of going back to basics, staying aligned with one's purpose and values, and finding a supportive community that shares similar goals. As you juggle your important roles be encouraged and inspired by these tips: Staying Grounded in Values: Julia emphasizes the importance of staying true to one's core values while juggling various roles. Being self-aware and aligned with your values can prevent burnout and provide a solid foundation for your actions. Prioritizing Family Time: Balancing work and family can be challenging, especially during school breaks. Dedicate specific days or times for quality family interactions. While complete detachment from work might not always be possible, finding a balance that allows focused family time is essential. Setting Boundaries: Establish boundaries between work and family life. Utilize tools like the "Do Not Disturb" feature on your phone to ensure uninterrupted family moments and time for self-care. Being Present: When spending time with family, make a conscious effort to be fully present. Limit distractions and engage in meaningful interactions that nurture relationships. Using Writing and Meditation: Incorporate practices like writing and meditation to help you reflect, stay mindful, and manage stress. These practices can help you gain clarity and maintain a sense of calm amidst busy schedules. Accepting Imperfection: Understand that perfection is unattainable, and it's okay to have days when you don't get everything done. Acknowledge that you're doing your best and extend self-compassion when things don't go as planned. Inviting Spirituality into Business: Integrate spirituality into your business by viewing your spiritual beliefs as a guiding force. Embrace your relationship with a higher power and approach challenges with a sense of partnership. Finding Community: Seek out like-minded individuals who share your faith and values. Surrounding yourself with a supportive community can provide encouragement, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Alignment with Purpose: Continuously remind yourself of your purpose and mission. Regularly check in with your values and ask if your actions are aligned with your greater goals. Recognizing Success: Acknowledge your accomplishments and growth. Celebrate the progress you've made in both your personal and professional life. Embracing Change: Be open to change and adapt as needed. Recognize that the journey of balancing different roles is fluid and requires flexibility. Seeking Guidance: Engage in practices that help you seek guidance and clarity, such as prayer or meditation. Create space to connect with your spiritual beliefs for direction and comfort. Integrating Spirituality in Practice: Don't shy away from integrating spirituality in your therapeutic practice. Recognize that discussing spirituality can provide deeper connections and healing for your clients. Learning from Others: Embrace the experiences and stories of others who have navigated similar challenges. Learn from their insights, mistakes, and successes to find your own path. Practicing Self-Compassion: Extend kindness and understanding to yourself. Remember that you are doing important work, and it's okay to ask for help or seek support when needed.   "All of you out there are doing better than you think you are... Give yourself some grace. And the majority of the time when we might be stumbling a little bit, the majority of the time it comes from the best possible place." Conclusion In this enlightening episode, Julia Nepini shares her journey of successfully balancing her roles as a mother, business owner, and individual of faith. Empowering Therapists Through Personal and Professional Growth In this enlightening episode of "Soul Care for Therapists," host Dawn Gabriel engages in a deep and meaningful conversation with Kelly Lynch, a seasoned therapist and coach who specializes in helping individuals navigate both their personal and professional lives with resilience and empowerment. Kelly brings a wealth of experience to the table, having not only walked the path of a therapist but also as a survivor of domestic violence and a former EMS personnel. Her unique journey has given her profound insights into the integration of faith and psychology, making her a guiding light for therapists striving to build sustainable businesses while honoring their own well-being. Discovering Resilience Amidst Personal Challenges Kelly opens up about her transformative experiences, shedding light on her own journey through a challenging divorce and her triumphant emergence from domestic violence. Despite these trials, she demonstrates how resilience and grit can be harnessed to propel oneself forward. Kelly shares, "We argued about basically everything, uh, but from beginning to end it was six months, which is really fast for a contentious divorce. So again, like I got really lucky with the pace that the divorce moved at, so then I could just move on with my life." Grit and Power: A Model for Growth Kelly introduces her powerful coaching model, Grit and Power, which acts as a roadmap for therapists seeking personal and professional alignment. The Grit model encompasses Growth, Resilience, Identity, and Training, all vital components of personal development. Kelly explains, "Growth is about how we practice resilience, how we create resilience...how we adapt to the world around us." She further delves into the significance of Identity and Integrity, emphasizing the importance of staying aligned with one's core values. The Power model complements Grit by offering a practical approach to addressing challenges, with the acronym representing Pause for Perspective, Observe and Organize, Work the Problem, Express the Impact, and Recover. Balancing Professional Growth and Personal Well-being Kelly's approach to growth doesn't solely apply to the professional realm; she extends her insights to encompass personal lives as well. She shares her own experiences of parenting a tween daughter and emphasizes the value of practicing self-care and boundary-setting. She says, "When we think about mental health skills, they're just the same. It's just putting it into a different context." Kelly underscores the importance of debriefing and self-care, drawing parallels between her EMS background and the necessity for therapists to discharge energy after emotionally charged sessions. Tips for Integration and Transformation For therapists and business owners seeking integration of their faith and psychology, Kelly's wisdom offers tangible takeaways.  Embrace the Grit and Power model to navigate challenges with resilience and intentionality.  Identify personal values and live them out with integrity.  Practice self-care as you balance professional demands and personal growth.  Kelly's upcoming book, which delves into the Grit and Power model, promises to be an invaluable resource for therapists and individuals seeking holistic alignment. In Summary: Aligning Growth, Resilience, and Faith Kelly Lynch's journey from therapist to coach is one of empowerment, growth, and alignment. Her Grit and Power model serves as a beacon of hope for therapists navigating their own personal and professional challenges. Through resilience, intentionality, and self-care, Kelly encourages therapists to foster growth, embrace their identities, and thrive in both their businesses and personal lives. As a survivor, coach, and mentor, Kelly's insights remind us that personal growth is a lifelong journey that can be both transformative and empowering.  About Kelly Kelly Lynch is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Life Coach, Personal Fitness Trainer, and Nutrition Coach. Navigating Trauma, Faith, and Rebuilding: A Personal Journey Episode 97 of the podcast features a candid conversation between host Dawn Gabriel and guest Rebecca Gilbert, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). In this episode, they delve into Rebecca's unique journey of managing personal trauma and faith while maintaining her private practice. Dawn introduces Rebecca to the podcast, and Rebecca shares her gratitude for the opportunity. They engage in a warm and insightful dialogue, with Rebecca opening up about her experience as a mother, therapist, and business owner. She discusses the challenges she faced when her husband was diagnosed with a rare cancer, which abruptly disrupted her seemingly stable life. More about Rebecca Rebeca Gilbert believes healing happens when our bodies feel safe, seen, and connected. For the past 16 years, she has sought to create pockets of safety for her clients in various settings from court-ordered therapy in rural Mississippi, to group practices in college towns (Go Gators!) to solo private practice. ‌In 2019, after building her dream private practice, her husband was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer and given a 2% chance of survival. Suddenly, the beautiful life that Rebeca had worked so hard to build- being a therapist in solo practice, business owner, wife, and parent of two children under the age of 5 came crashing down. After taking a sabbatical and going back to her own therapy work, Rebeca began to rebuild her private practice with a renewed commitment to serving her clients while prioritizing family time. Today, Rebeca lives with her husband and two elementary-aged kids in the sunshine state juggling the demands of being a mom, wife, caregiver, and dinner maker as well as being a business owner, and holding others' pain for a living. She is honored to share the hope and the messiness of her story with anyone brave enough to listen. Three Key Takeaways: Embracing Raw Authenticity: Rebecca's journey highlights the intersection of her professional role as a therapist with her personal struggles. She describes the initial disorientation she felt when her husband's diagnosis upended their lives. The raw authenticity she displayed during this challenging time enabled her to connect on a deeper level with her clients, fostering a more genuine therapeutic relationship. Embodied Faith: Rebecca shares how her faith evolved from being an intellectual construct to becoming a deeply embodied experience. Through therapy and personal growth, she learned to listen to her body as a barometer of her emotional and spiritual state. This profound alignment between mind, body, and spirit helped her recalibrate and make more authentic and meaningful connections with both her clients and her faith. Rebuilding with Purpose: After closing her practice temporarily due to her husband's illness, Rebecca embarked on a journey of rebuilding and recalibrating her life and business. She discusses how this experience led her to set stronger boundaries, value her expertise, and prioritize self-care. Rebecca's narrative exemplifies the power of resilience, faith, and community in navigating personal trauma and professional growth. Rebecca's story underscores the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Her journey demonstrates how authenticity, embodied faith, and intentional rebuilding can lead to transformative growth in both personal and professional spheres. In this episode, Dawn Gabriel, Steph Korpal, and Christy Pennison come together to discuss the power of collaboration and its potential to fuel growth for group practice owners. They share personal experiences of finding support and connection within a community of like-minded professionals. Stephanie Korpal and Christy Pennison are both group practice owners with multiple locations. Both women are passionate about their group practices, teams, and communities they serve--Stephanie in St. Louis and Chicago, Christy in central Louisiana (Alexandria and Natchichoes to be exact). That passion also extends to fellow group practice owners, a role they both know takes so much! Together, they have founded and launched a unique, special place for group practice bosses to connect, collaborate, and crush it. Their business, The Practice Collab, is designed to help practice owners work less, make more, and live most. The Problem with Group Practice Ownership Group practice owners often face unexpected challenges and feelings of loneliness in their decision-making processes. They may feel overwhelmed and second-guess their choices. The weight of responsibilities can lead to burnout, but finding a supportive community can be the key to preventing that. Steph Korpal: "Group practice ownership is one of those things that you can prepare all day long for, but you're never gonna be fully prepared for everything that's going to come at you... It can also feel really lonely because you're having to make decisions oftentimes... by yourself." Christy Pennison: "Group practice owners often don't give themselves enough credit for what they are actually doing, and so they often feel overwhelmed or they're worrying about... did I make the right choice?" The Power of Collaboration Collaboration allows group practice owners to bounce ideas off one another, find clarity, and make effective decisions. Working together in a supportive environment gives them the freedom of time and space to work on tasks that can transform their practices. Dawn Gabriel: "Collaboration is so important... Sometimes it's just getting that space... to really clearly define where you wanna go and then get the help of a supportive community to be able to move the needle forward." The Birth of "The Practice Collab" Steph and Christy describe their vision for "The Practice Collab," a membership community designed for group practice owners to co-work weekly, hold brainstorming sessions, and gain accountability. They believe in creating a safe and nurturing space for practice owners to grow, connect, and succeed together. Steph Korpal: "We are building a membership community that isn't another membership. What we are building is a collaboration, so a cohort of people, group practice owners, to work together weekly for six months... to collaborate and crush it." Soul Care Through Collaboration The power of collaboration extends beyond business goals; it also addresses the soul care of group practice owners. The sense of community, validation, and support helps individuals find peace, clarity, and a sense of purpose in their lives and businesses. Dawn Gabriel: "I would say that's spiritual and it's where, to me, I feel God in that place. It's a piece of God in my life. Like it's a spiritual place for me." The Invitation to World Changers Group practice owners play a vital role in the mental health of their clients and, in turn, the well-being of the world. "The Practice Collab" is an invitation to world changers to receive the support they need to continue their impactful work. Christy Pennison: "Group practice owners are like the world changers, but world changers need support... and a supportive community to be able to move the needle forward." Reasons Why Practice Owners Face Burnout and Need a Supportive Community Isolation and Loneliness: Both therapists and group practice owners often experience feelings of isolation and loneliness due to the nature of their work. Therapists spend much of their day behind closed doors with clients, while group practice owners may find themselves making difficult decisions alone even with a leadership team in place. Overwhelm and Burnout: Group practice owners can feel overwhelmed by the unexpected challenges that come with running a practice. The constant need to put out fires and handle day-to-day operations can lead to burnout and exhaustion. Lack of Support: Group practice owners may not always have access to a supportive community that understands the unique challenges they face. This lack of support can make decision-making and problem-solving even more difficult. Time Constraints: The busy schedule of therapists and group practice owners often makes it challenging to find dedicated time to work on important tasks, such as implementing systems or developing new initiatives. Comparisons and Competition: Group practice owners may fall into the comparison trap, comparing their progress or success to that of other practice owners. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy or pressure to keep up with others in the field. Lack of Clarity and Direction: Without a space for brainstorming and collaborating, practice owners may struggle to find clarity on their goals and the next steps for their practice. This lack of direction can hinder growth and progress. Feeling Overwhelmed with Multiple Roles: Group practice owners wear multiple hats, juggling their roles as therapists, business owners, and leaders. This can create a sense of being pulled in many directions and lead to stress. Lack of Time for Self-Care: As they focus on the needs of their clients and practice, therapists and group practice owners may neglect their own self-care, leading to potential burnout and decreased well-being Resources and Links Helping Practice Owners- The Practice Collab The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth About Extraordinary Results   Podcast Production and Show Notes by James Marland

They also touch on the potential challenges and overwhelming experiences that can arise during spiritual emergence, especially when working with plant medicines. "Spiritual emergence really just being, you know, a point in somebody's life where they are looking at the deeper meaning of their own existence. Um, so that can be after a, like a near-death experience. That could be through a plant medicine experience, that could be through getting divorced, um, or just kind of reaching a point in life where they're questioning more of those things for themselves." "Sometimes even a more difficult outcome is the sort of disappointing experience. Cuz sometimes nothing happens, or from the life perspective, nothing happens. Or sometimes it's just kind of minimal and it's not the life-changing event that they were hoping that it would be." Types of Sacred Plant Medicines The conversation shifts to discussing different types of sacred plant medicines and their psychoactive properties. Alexis mentions some commonly known psychoactive substances such as psilocybin mushrooms, cannabis, and ayahuasca. She also explains the distinction between natural derivatives and chemically altered versions used in clinical settings. "The more commonplace ones that are psychoactive are psilocybin mushrooms, um, cannabis, we all know that one. Um, there is iboga or Ibogaine. So iboga is, um, it comes from a shrub that grows in Africa, and the natural bark of that is something that you can ingest and have the psychoactive experiences from." "For a lot of these substances, there's a natural derivative and then there's like a more, um, chemically altered type version of it. And often it's that second group that's used in the, um, like the clinical trial settings or in ibogaine clinics, in ketamine clinics and things like that." Therapeutic Applications and Integration Dawn and Alexis explore the therapeutic applications of sacred plant medicines. They discuss how different substances can be beneficial for various conditions, including trauma, depression, PTSD, and addiction. Alexis emphasizes the importance of psychedelic integration work and the role of therapists in helping clients process their experiences. "A lot of times, people are very excited about going into the experience, but they don't necessarily think about what happens afterwards. And sometimes, um, you know, there can be things that kind of come up that maybe didn't during the experience that need to be processed, need to be integrated into the daily life, you know, sort of things like that. And so, you know, therapists who do this work are often there to help with the integration process." "So a lot of times, we're doing integration work after the fact. Sometimes I will work with clients prior, uh, to kind of set the stage, and then we continue on afterwards. Sometimes it's just afterwards. Um, but there's a lot of times when, um, you know, people will come in and we're talking about, okay, how do I take what I learned in this space and apply it to my daily life?" Plant Medicine and Spirituality The conversation delves into the intersection of plant medicine and spirituality. Alexis discusses how plant medicine experiences can deepen one's spiritual connection, even for individuals with a religious background. She highlights the potential for transformation and a shift in priorities based on direct experiences during plant medicine journeys. "You know, that doesn't feel in any way in conflict for me because that you've already got a running start in a way, because there's some valuation there of there being a connectedness to all existence. There's some questioning of like, who am I beyond my little human personality and what's my relationship to everything that exists?" "And so I think a lot of times these things lead to an even deeper experience of, uh, religion or spirituality, or sometimes even a shift in what their spiritual priorities are. Um, it's not uncommon for somebody to, you know, have a deep spiritual practice and then have a psychedelic experience, and then their priority becomes a little bit more focused on, you know, sort of a direct relationship with the divine rather than the more structured kind of religious perspective." Ethical Considerations and Safety Dawn and Alexis address the ethical considerations and safety measures associated with working with sacred plant medicines. Alexis emphasizes the importance of thorough screening and preparation before engaging in a plant medicine journey. They discuss the significance of setting intentions, ensuring a safe environment, and having a trusted guide or facilitator to navigate the experience. "In terms of the ethics of it, you know, one of the biggest things is that this is not something that should be done recreationally. You know, I think there's a big difference between somebody going to a festival and just kind of having this experience, and somebody who's working with a guide, somebody who's doing integration work, somebody who is just a lot more intentional about the process." "And then, um, you know, just safety-wise, it's really important to have a good set and setting. Um, I think there's a lot of people that want to go off to the jungle and do ayahuasca, and it's like, you know, maybe I should make sure that I'm, you know, safe and I'm cared for in a way that, um, isn't, um, potentially dangerous." Conclusion In this episode, Dawn Gabriel and guest Alexis Ward delve into the topic of sacred plant medicine and its integration with therapy. They discuss spiritual emergence, different types of sacred plant medicines, therapeutic applications, ethical considerations, and the importance of integration and therapeutic support. Listeners gain insights into the potential benefits and challenges of working with sacred plant medicines and how therapists can play a vital role in this process.   Links and Resources 12 Faces Web Site Twelve Faces on Facebook Twelve Faces on Instagram Podcast Production and Show Notes by James Marland

Welcome to another episode of the Soul Care for Therapists Podcast! In this episode, Dawn Gabriel and her guest Chris McDonald have an insightful conversation on holistic self-care. Chris is a therapist, yogi, podcaster, meditation teacher, and author. Chris shares his personal and professional journey, highlighting his passion for holistic care and helping therapists incorporate holistic practices into their work. They discuss their shared experiences as podcasters and the importance of practicing what they preach. Personal and Professional Journey Chris McDonald is a therapist, yogi, podcaster, meditation teacher, and author. She shares his experience of juggling various roles in his life, acknowledging the challenges that come with it. Despite the occasional chaos, Chris finds fulfillment in his work. He runs a small group practice and hosts the Holistic Counseling Podcast, which has been nurturing for two years. Her podcast aims to grow its audience and provide more offerings for therapists. Chris particularly enjoys helping therapists with self-care and teaching them holistic practices to use with their clients. Passion for Yoga and Meditation Chris's journey into yoga and meditation started gradually. As a school counselor, she initially learned about breathwork during a teacher retreat. She noticed the positive impact it had on her students, allowing them to calm themselves. However, Chris realized that breathwork alone wasn't always sufficient. She discovered the power of combining breathwork with movement, which deepened the healing experience. Alongside this, Chris began exploring meditation by joining a local Buddhist group. Through consistent practice, she learned valuable lessons in maintaining daily practice and incorporated these practices into his personal lifestyle and therapeutic work. Teaching and Practicing Self-Care Dawn and Chris discuss the common tendency among therapists to teach mindfulness and self-care skills while neglecting their own practice. Chris emphasizes the importance of therapists actively engaging in the practices they teach. She admits that even as a teacher, she often uses practices as a band-aid, only turning to them when he's having a bad day or trouble sleeping. However, Chris encourages therapists to develop a regular self-care routine and integrate mindfulness, yoga, and meditation into their daily lives. By practicing what they preach, therapists can experience the transformative power of these holistic practices and better support their clients. Holistic Practices in Session As a therapist, Chris integrates various holistic practices into his sessions. She considers breathwork, meditation, and yoga as the trifecta of holistic self-care. Dawn states being mindful and present is difficult. “It's like we are asking people to slow down and get mindful, and that's so different than. Level up and hustle and do this thing next.” These practices help ground clients and promote mindfulness, slowing down the fast pace of their lives. Chris clarifies that the yoga he teaches isn't focused on fitness or flexibility but centers on calming the nervous system through mindful movements. He also incorporates brain spotting and polyvagal theory into his work, recognizing the importance of psychoeducation in helping clients understand and benefit from these practices. People do not realize how fast they are going and the permission and skills to slow down can be life-changing.  Conclusion Dawn and Chris conclude their conversation by emphasizing the importance of being true to oneself. Chris's decision to have a small group practice, despite external pressure to expand, exemplifies his commitment to his own well-being and soul care. They discuss how holistic practices challenge the culture of constant hustle and encourage individuals to slow down, be mindful, and find balance in their lives. By embracing holistic self-care, individuals can discover the transformative power of mindfulness, yoga, and meditation. Ways to Engage Holistic Self-Care Prioritize self-care: Develop a consistent self-care routine that includes mindfulness, yoga, and meditation practices. Make time for these activities daily to experience their full benefits. Practice what you preach: As a therapist, actively engage in the holistic practices you teach your clients. By integrating these practices into your own life, you can better support your clients and lead by example. Educate yourself: Explore books and resources on topics such as polyvagal theory and holistic approaches to therapy. Expand your knowledge and incorporate new techniques into your practice. Be true to yourself: Don't feel pressured to conform to societal expectations or follow the path that everyone else is taking. Listen to your own needs and desires, and make choices that align with your values and well-being. Slow down and find balance: Challenge the hustle culture and prioritize slowing down, being mindful, and finding balance in your life. Take breaks throughout the day, avoid rushing, and savor the present moment. By implementing these action steps, you can engage holistically in self-care and create a more balanced and fulfilling life for yourself and your clients. Welcome to the latest episode of Soul Care for Therapists. In this episode, titled "The Transformation of Spiritual Direction," we have the pleasure of hosting Dan Kane, an experienced spiritual director who has been involved in Dawn's life for several years. Dawn Gabriel shares a bit about her personal journey in a school for spiritual direction. Dan, the leader of the school, started out as a civil engineer turned missionary engineer, and how his experiences led him to the practice of spiritual direction. Stay tuned till the end of the episode where Dan leads us into a guided spiritual exercise “The Practice of Being Know.”  Meet Dan Kane Dan is a spiritual director and supervisor who teaches with the Sustainable Faith Schools of Spiritual Direction. An enthusiast of Ignatian Spirituality, Dan has also been trained by Sustainable Faith to accompany individuals through the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, a deeply formational journey for those hungry to grow in their experience of God. He is also a pilgrimage guide along the Camino de Ignaciano, a recently developed route in northeastern Spain that highlights the journey Ignatius of Loyola made in the year 1522 and invites modern-day pilgrims to a growing understanding of God's direction for one's life. Over the last 20+ years, Dan has served churches as an elder, staff member, and volunteer ministry leader, worked full-time with a few different mission organizations, and in 2022 began serving with InterVarsity USA as an Associate Director of Spiritual Formation. Understanding Spiritual Direction Dawn asks Dan to shed light on the difference between spiritual direction and Christian therapy. Dan refers to a definition provided by William Barry and William Connolly in their book The Practice of Spiritual Direction, saying, "We define spiritual direction then as the help given by one believer to another that enables the latter to pay attention to God's personal communication...to grow in intimacy with this God and to live out the consequences of the relationship." He emphasizes the importance of companionship and helping individuals become more aware of God's presence in their everyday lives. Spiritual direction involves noticing, exploring, reflecting, and responding to the ways in which God communicates and reveals Himself. Dan also highlights the focus on the present and the desire to become more like Christ through experiential encounters with God. Cultivating Heightened Awareness "Did you know that God is present in every moment of your life, even the ordinary ones?" It's true! To experience God's presence, start by paying attention to the small wonders around you. Notice the vibrant colors of the flowers, the gentle breeze on your face, or the laughter of your friends. As the speaker in the episode suggests, "When you're brushing your teeth or playing with your pet, remember that God is there with you, loving you and guiding you." By developing a heightened awareness, you'll begin to see the fingerprints of God in the beauty and simplicity of your everyday experiences. The Transformative Power of Spiritual Direction Dawn shares her personal experience of attending Dan's school, where she learned not only about spiritual direction but also engaged in experiential practices that deepened her intimacy with God. She explains that therapy often focuses on coping skills and rearranging the "furniture" in the lower room of our lives, while spiritual direction delves into the upper room of the soul, exploring the spiritual realm and experiencing God on a deeper level. Dawn expresses how her journey toward becoming a spiritual director has been transformational, not just informational. Dan expands on this distinction, saying that while knowledge and information about God are important, true transformation occurs when that knowledge shapes our encounters with and experiences of God. Spiritual direction aims to help individuals become more like Christ, cultivating intimacy, and living out the implications of their relationship with God. Through the episode Dawn and Dan explore the differences between knowing about God and experiencing God's presence.  Experience God with a Personal Connection The conversation emphasizes that experiencing God's presence goes beyond mere knowledge. It highlights the importance of developing a personal relationship with God. Similarly, knowledge about God involves understanding concepts and teachings, but experiencing God's presence involves a deeper connection that touches the heart and soul. Knowing about God is good, but experiencing God's love and guidance in our everyday lives is even better. It's like reading a book about your favorite historical figure versus actually meeting them and feeling their strength and kindness. Experiencing God with a Personal Encounter Where is a place where you experience God? It is not always in a church or place of worship. It can be doing a service project, in a forest, on a walk, or having deep conversations with people. While knowledge about God involves understanding concepts and teachings through learning and study, experiencing the presence of God requires a personal encounter and direct experience. It surpasses intellectual understanding and touches the depths of our hearts and souls. Learning about God is like studying a beautiful painting, and understanding its colors and composition. Experiencing God's presence, on the other hand, is like stepping into the painting, feeling the warmth of the sun, smelling the flowers, and hearing the whispers of the wind. Where can you step into an experience with God?  Engaging in Experiential Learning Dawn reflects on the structure of Dan's teaching and the experiential nature of their learning environment. She describes how they engaged in exercises that facilitated a deeper presence before God, allowing space to notice thoughts, feelings, and even bodily sensations. Through this process, participants were able to share their experiences and learn from one another. Dan adds that this collective learning enhances the awareness of God's presence and communication, fostering a hunger for a more intimate and deep relationship with Him. Dawn recalls a particularly impactful exercise in which they listened to one another's stories, paying attention to how God had shown up in their lives. This exercise highlighted the importance of being listened to and receiving observations from others, helping individuals recognize God's presence in their own stories. Experiencing God Through Sharing Stories and Encounters Imagine the excitement of sharing your own stories of encountering God with others! When you open your heart and share these experiences, you not only inspire others but also deepen your own understanding of God's presence. It could be as simple as sharing a moment when you felt God's comfort during a challenging time or when you experienced joy and gratitude for the blessings in your life. By listening to other's stories as well, you'll learn to recognize God's hand at work in the lives of those around you. So, let your voice be heard, and let your stories of faith shine brightly! Experiencing God Through Seeking Spiritual Companionship Embarking on a spiritual journey is always better with a companion by your side. The speaker encourages us to find a spiritual director or a trusted mentor who can guide and support us along the way. This person can be someone you trust, like a teacher, a family member, or a community leader. They will help you understand and interpret your encounters with God, providing valuable insights and encouragement. Remember, you're not alone in this journey of faith. Your spiritual companion will walk alongside you, nurturing your connection with God and helping you navigate the wonders of everyday life. Live a Life Expecting to Experience the Presence of God Dan Kane enlightens us about the practice of spiritual direction and its transformative power. He emphasizes the distinction between informational knowledge and experiential encounters with God, highlighting the importance of living out the implications of our relationship with Him. Dawn shares her personal journey and the impact of engaging in experiential learning in Dan's school. The episode concludes with a sense of curiosity and a desire to explore our own experiences of God more deeply. Tips for Increasing Your Spiritual Awareness Take time to notice and reflect on how you experience God in your everyday life. Share your experiences and stories with others, paying attention to how God has shown up in your life. Seek out companionship and support from a spiritual director or fellow believers to help you grow in intimacy with God. Engage in experiential practices that facilitate a deeper presence before God, allowing space to notice thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. Foster a hunger for a more intimate and deep relationship with God through collective learning and sharing experiences with others. Understanding Your Priorities: Building a Team That Matters When it comes to building and growing your team, understanding your priorities is key. As the speakers emphasized, "Get clear on what's important to you as you build and grow your team." Take some time to reflect on your core values and the qualities you seek in team members. By identifying what truly matters to you, you can ensure that your team aligns with your vision. The significance of culture should not be overlooked. "Having a culture that works for you and the lifestyle you want is essential." Your team's culture sets the tone for the entire workplace. It impacts employee satisfaction, productivity, and overall success. Consider what kind of culture you want to create and how it can contribute to a positive and engaging work environment. Hiring Process: From Job Posting to Termination Crafting a compelling job description is an important step in attracting the right candidates. As the speakers suggested, "Craft a job description that accurately reflects your requirements and company culture." Be clear about the role, responsibilities, and qualifications you're looking for. Additionally, highlight the unique aspects of your team and workplace. This will help you attract candidates who resonate with your mission and values. When it comes to hiring, it's crucial to align your decisions with your values and culture. During interviews, incorporate values-based questions to assess cultural fit. As one of the speakers noted, "Ensure your hiring process aligns with your values and desired culture." By evaluating candidates based on both skills and cultural alignment, you can build a team that not only performs well but also thrives together. Handling termination is a sensitive aspect of team management. The speakers advised, "Handle termination based on your values and culture." Terminations can be challenging, but approaching them with empathy and respect is essential. Provide constructive feedback and support to help employees grow, even in difficult situations. By prioritizing the well-being of your team members, you can maintain a positive and supportive work environment. Remember, the hiring process is not just about finding the right skill set—it's about finding individuals who align with your values and contribute to your desired culture. By putting in the effort to attract and select the right candidates, you'll be building a strong foundation for your team's success. Hiring with a Holistic Approach When it comes to hiring, it's crucial to adopt a holistic perspective. It's not just about ticking off qualifications on a checklist. Instead, delve deeper into the candidate's personality, work ethic, and potential for growth. As one of our speakers wisely pointed out, "Beyond qualifications, look for individuals who display a genuine interest in your company and demonstrate a willingness to contribute to its success." Imagine you're assembling a puzzle for your team, with each piece representing a different aspect of a candidate. The qualifications piece is undoubtedly important, but it's just one part of the puzzle. To complete the picture, you need to find individuals whose personalities align with your company's culture and values. Look for those who bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a positive attitude to the table. What if you were building a high-performance sports team? While technical skills are essential, you also want team members who have a passion for the game, a strong work ethic, and the ability to adapt and grow. These qualities not only contribute to individual success but also foster a collaborative and thriving team dynamic. By taking a holistic approach to hiring, you're not just filling positions; you're building a team that's united by shared values and a collective drive for success. Look for candidates who not only have the necessary qualifications but also embody the qualities that will enhance your team's culture and contribute to its long-term growth. Effective Team Management for Growth Building strong relationships with your team members is a fundamental aspect of effective team management. "Nurture strong relationships with your team members," the speakers emphasized. Encourage open communication, trust, and collaboration. Get to know your team on a personal level and invest in their growth and development. By fostering a sense of belonging and support, you can create a motivated and high-performing team. Delegating effectively is another crucial skill for team management. "Learn to delegate effectively and empower your team." Assign tasks based on each team member's strengths and expertise. Provide guidance and resources, but also allow autonomy and ownership. Empowering your team members not only boosts their confidence but also encourages innovation and growth within the team. Preparing for Chaos and Embracing Change In any business, chaos, and change are inevitable. As one of the speakers wisely mentioned, "Prepare for chaos and embrace the inevitability of change." Recognize that change is a natural part of growth and be prepared to adapt accordingly. Cultivate an environment of flexibility and adaptability within your team. This mindset will enable you to navigate unforeseen circumstances and overcome challenges with resilience. Implementing strategies to manage change is crucial. "Implement strategies to manage and thrive amidst chaos and change." Encourage open dialogue and brainstorming sessions to collectively find solutions. Foster a culture that embraces change and encourages continuous learning and improvement. By approaching change as an opportunity rather than a setback, you can propel your team and business forward. Action Steps for Building and Growing Your Team To successfully build and grow your team while creating a culture that works for you, consider taking the following action steps: Reflect on your priorities and define the values and qualities you seek in your team members. Craft a compelling job description that accurately reflects your requirements and company culture. Incorporate values-based questions during interviews to assess cultural fit. Handle terminations with empathy and respect, providing constructive feedback and support. Nurture strong relationships with your team members, fostering open communication and trust. Delegate effectively, empowering your team members and encouraging their growth. Prepare for chaos and embrace change by fostering adaptability and continuous learning within your team. By following these action steps and utilizing the recommended resources, you can build a strong team and create a thriving work environment that aligns with your vision and values. Welcome to the latest episode of Soul Care for Therapists podcast! In this episode, "Top 3 Mistakes Group Practice Owners Make When Deciding to Hire an Assistant," host Dawn Gabriel interviews Leta Gutzman, a virtual assistant specializing in practice management for private practice owners. Leta shares her insights and expertise on the common mistakes made by practice owners when hiring a virtual assistant and provides valuable tips on how to avoid them.  A little about Leta As the founder and CEO alone, Leta has many roles within the company. With a passion for mental health and a drive to help others succeed Leta decided to start a virtual assistant business that grew into a successful business. With skills to run a business starting at 7 years old and Administrative experience starting as young as 14 Leta always knew she wanted to create a business to become successful and help others at the same time. Leta is married to a supportive husband and has 2 beautiful children and resides in sunny South Florida. " I love what I do on a daily basis for my clients, I am very thankful that I can be a part of helping people become mentally healthy" Let's dive in and discover Leta's advice! Mistake #1: Choosing a Virtual Assistant Without Mental Health Experience "One thing that I often see when hiring a virtual assistant is choosing or selecting someone that doesn't have the mental health experience," says Leta. It is crucial to find a virtual assistant who specializes in the mental health field and possesses the necessary skills and compassion to interact with clients effectively. Hiring someone without this expertise can lead to a misrepresentation of your practice and leave clients feeling unsatisfied and out of place. Leta emphasizes the importance of understanding the clients' needs and handling situations with empathy and professionalism. A key behavior for virtual assistants in the mental health world is compassion.  Mistake #2: Failing to Shift Your Mindset on Control Hiring a virtual assistant requires a shift in mindset and relinquishing some control over certain aspects of your practice. Leta acknowledges that many practice owners find this prospect daunting. However, she explains that by coaching and guiding practice owners, she helps them see that they are not giving up all control but rather leading the assistant and setting the necessary procedures and expectations. Shifting the mindset from micromanagement to effective delegation allows practice owners to reap the benefits of having a virtual assistant without feeling overwhelmed. Leta bridges the gap by providing training for both virtual assistants and practice owners. She ensures that virtual assistants receive comprehensive training in mental health assistance based on her seven years of experience. Simultaneously, she helps practice owners understand the process of delegating tasks to virtual assistants, empowering them to know what to expect and how to manage the tasks effectively. Leta's ongoing support and group calls for virtual assistants create a supportive community where they can seek guidance and troubleshoot issues, fostering a collaborative environment. Mistake #3: Lack of Familiarity with Tasks Themselves Another common mistake practice owners make when hiring a virtual assistant is not being familiar with the tasks they want to delegate. Practice owners need to know how to complete the tasks themselves, including understanding the procedures, time requirements, and realistic expectations. By having firsthand knowledge of the tasks, practice owners can effectively manage and evaluate the work done by the virtual assistant. It is essential to have a step-by-step method for each task, allowing practice owners to monitor progress and ensure accurate completion. Leta emphasizes that passing over tasks without understanding how to do them oneself can hinder the success of the virtual assistant's role. She advises practice owners to gain proficiency in the tasks they wish to delegate, enabling them to set clear expectations and provide guidance. By having a solid understanding of the tasks, practice owners can effectively train their virtual assistants and ensure that the work is done according.  Bonus Tip Leta highlights the significance of aligning your practice's values with those of your virtual assistant. If you run a faith-based practice, it's crucial to find a virtual assistant who understands or shares your faith. While not a requirement, having a virtual assistant who aligns with your practice's values, including faith, can enhance the working relationship and ensure a better understanding of your clients' needs. Leta advises having open discussions and asking relevant questions to determine if the virtual assistant is a good fit for your practice. Welcome to the podcast, where we explore strategies to help therapists improve their financial well-being. In this episode, we're joined by author Julie Herres, who shares insights on implementing Profit First, a cash flow management system specifically tailored for therapists. Julie's warm and empathetic approach makes financial management less daunting for therapists, enabling them to prioritize profit and create a sustainable and thriving practice.  Julie Herres is an expert in Profit First who has helped hundreds of private practice owners gain financial freedom. Founder of GreenOak Accounting, the country's largest firm serving the mental health industry, Julie is an accountant, consultant, speaker, author of Profit First for Therapists, and host of the Therapy for Your Money podcast. Changing the Narrative for Therapists Therapists Can Thrive Financially Julie believes that being a therapist shouldn't mean a vow of poverty. She aims to dispel the misconception that therapists can't make a good living while doing meaningful work. "I want to change the narrative that being a therapist should be a vow of poverty because I just don't think that is true. I think you can go out there and do this amazing work that you were called to do and also make a good living." Therapists, typically not known for being warm and fuzzy about finances, find comfort in Julie's approach. She creates a safe space for therapists to navigate their financial concerns. "I defy that [stereotype]. That's the work that I enjoy—helping therapists with their finances and providing information for those willing to implement change and improve their practice." Understanding Profit First for Therapists Profit First is a cash flow management system that helps therapists carve out profit intentionally. "By implementing Profit First, you ensure that your business's profitability is a priority from day one." Unlike the traditional formula of income minus expenses equals profit, Profit First ensures that profit is a priority. Julie explains the system's foundation: "We have three bank accounts earmarked for the owner's benefit—profit, tax, and owner's pay. Additionally, we have accounts for income, operating expenses, and payroll." By allocating funds to specific accounts, therapists can protect their profit and ensure they receive fair compensation for their work. The profit account acts as a reward for taking risks and providing valuable services to the community. "The goal of the profit account is to pay you a dividend once a quarter and reward you for your efforts as a business owner." The Power of Smaller Plates for Managing Money Managing Money Effectively Using a smaller plate analogy, Julie emphasizes the importance of multiple bank accounts in the Profit First system. By dividing funds into separate accounts, therapists gain a clearer understanding of their financial resources. Julie explains, "When you're able to see what's available and where your wiggle room is, just within that one smaller account, you're naturally going to spend less because you're not looking at one big account that also has money earmarked for other purposes." The visual representation of separate accounts prompts therapists to make more informed financial decisions. Dawn Gabriel, the podcast host, shares her own experience: "If you were going to make a decision and you saw this amount in one account versus if it was spread across seven accounts, would you make the same decision?" Common Mistakes and Solutions when Implementing Profit First Implementing Profit First To successfully implement Profit First, therapists must be aware of common mistakes that can hinder progress. The first mistake is skipping the creation of separate bank accounts. Julie debunks excuses such as lack of time or familiarity with the banking process. Doing Profit First on paper doesn't provide the same impact as physically transferring funds between accounts. Another question arises: Should therapists hide some accounts to avoid constant visibility? While Mike Michalowicz, the author of Profit First, suggests using Vault accounts at different banks, Julie doesn't recommend this approach for therapists. Instead, she suggests keeping all accounts visible but organizing them strategically for better financial management. Action Steps and Tips: Embrace the belief that being a therapist doesn't mean accepting a vow of poverty. You can make a good living while helping others. Implement Profit First by setting up multiple bank accounts for specific purposes, such as profit, tax, owner's pay, income, operating expenses, and payroll. Allocate funds to each account based on predetermined percentages or amounts. Regularly transfer money into the profit account and reward yourself as the business owner by taking a dividend from this account once a quarter. Use the visual representation of separate accounts to make more informed financial decisions. Avoid common mistakes, such as skipping the creation of separate bank accounts and hiding accounts to avoid visibility. Stay organized and track your finances regularly to ensure the system is working effectively. Seek support from professionals or resources, such as the book "Profit First" by Mike Michalowicz, to gain a deeper understanding of the Profit First system and its implementation. Faith Fringes Podcast

Welcome to another episode of Soul Care for Therapists! In this episode, Dawn Gabriel is joined by Jane Carter, a renowned business coach and psychotherapist. Jane is known for her expertise in helping people achieve their goals and create a meaningful life. She brings a holistic approach to her work, blending spirituality and business principles. Dawn and Jane dive deep into the concept of treating your business like the slow food movement, emphasizing the importance of mindful growth and avoiding the pitfalls of comparison and rapid scaling. About Jane Carter As both a business coach and a psychotherapist, Jane loves helping people navigate the path to achieving their goals for a meaningful life. She applies these principles in her own life in the mountains of Asheville, NC, where she's an outdoorswoman, world-traveler, dog-mama, and coffee-shop connoisseur. Jane offers individual coaching as well as her 9-month Mighty Mastermind to help solopreneurs create a business (and life) they love. Embracing the Spiritual Side of a Therapy Practice Dawn introduces Jane Carter, an esteemed guest who has a well-rounded view of business and spirituality. Jane believes that our businesses are here to grow us, and they can be arenas where we experience spiritual growth. She quotes Teihard de Chardin, saying, "We're not human beings having a spiritual experience. We're spiritual beings having a human experience." Jane emphasizes the idea that everything we do can be considered spiritual, including our work and business endeavors. She encourages us to bring our full selves into everything we do, including our businesses. The Slow Food Movement of Growing a Private Practice Jane compares her coaching style to the slow food movement, which originated in Italy as a pushback against the fast-paced culture surrounding food. The slow food movement emphasizes savoring the food, appreciating where it comes from, and enjoying the process of its creation. Similarly, Jane encourages her clients to adopt a slow and deliberate approach to business. She addresses the pressure to scale and grow rapidly, which often leads to burnout and a loss of self. Jane suggests embracing the process and savoring each step along the way, allowing for personal growth and alignment with one's values. The Dangers of Comparison and Social Media Dawn and Jane discuss the harmful effects of comparison, particularly in the age of social media. Jane acknowledges that social media can make us feel bad about ourselves, especially when we compare our behind-the-scenes reality with others' polished highlight reels. She urges caution when consuming social media content and emphasizes the need to recognize the curated nature of what is being presented. Jane shares that she hires someone to manage her social media presence to avoid getting sucked into the comparison game. Practical Tips for Mindful Business Growth Dawn asks Jane for practical advice for her coaching clients who are looking for alternatives to rapid growth. Jane advises against comparing oneself to others and suggests getting clear on what you truly want. She emphasizes the importance of aligning your business goals with your values and creating a business that feels right for you. Jane shares her personal journey of realizing that a small boutique coaching practice was what she truly desired, rather than a large-scale operation. She encourages listeners to consider not just the financial aspects but also the overall feel and experience they want their business to embody. The Importance of Red Flags and Warning Signs Identifying Red Flags is key to being mindful. Jane emphasizes the significance of recognizing red flags that indicate a lack of balance and self-neglect. She advises paying attention to warning signs such as feeling burnt out, neglecting friendships, or neglecting personal well-being. "I'm feeling really burnt out. I'm feeling kind of crispy around the edges." Prioritizing Personal Connections to avoid burnout. You do not want to get to the point where you are exhausted and you hate your life. Dawn shares her experience of prioritizing personal connections over her to-do list. She emphasizes the importance of structuring business activities to align with personal values and goals. "This is the life I wanna live, so I am gonna let go of my to-do list." Recognizing Subtle Signs of Imbalance Listening to your body helps you recognize burnout. Jane points out the significance of paying attention to subtle signs of imbalance, such as increased irritability or discomfort. These signs serve as reminders to slow down and evaluate priorities. "If I'm cussing more than usual, that's a sign. I'm really irritable and that means I haven't tended to my soul." Remember to check in with yourself. Dawn highlights the importance of self-awareness and the need to slow down to recognize the nuances of discomfort or unease. She encourages individuals to evaluate the source of their anxiety or hesitation. "You have to slow down to know if it's fear-based or if it's not resonating with your soul." Action Steps: Identify Red Flags: Take time to identify personal red flags or warning signs that indicate a lack of balance and self-care. Pay attention to feelings of burnout or neglecting personal relationships. Listen to Your Body: Slow down and listen to your body's subtle signals. Notice signs of increased irritability or discomfort, as they may indicate the need for self-care and introspection. Evaluate Business Alignment: Regularly assess your business activities and marketing efforts. Notice if they align with your values and authentic self. Trust your gut instincts and make adjustments if something feels misaligned. Build a Supportive Community: Seek out a mastermind group or community of like-minded individuals who can provide honest feedback and support. Surround yourself with people who encourage personal and professional growth. Practice Self-Compassion: Celebrate your wins and achievements, no matter how small.   Stop Comparing Yourself to Others: Break free from the comparison trap and stop measuring our worth based on others' highlight reels. Constantly comparing ourselves to others on social media can foster discontentment and hinder our ability to appreciate and embrace our own unique journey and accomplishments. In episode 82 of Soul Care for Therapists, Dawn Gabriel interviews Whitney Owens, a licensed professional counselor, group practice owner, and faith-based private practice consultant. Whitney shares her passion for connecting faith-based practice owners and making changes in the world by helping them have the lifestyle they want to do and the work they want to do with God in the process. Whitney Owens is a licensed professional counselor, group practice owner, and faith-based private practice consultant. She is located in Savannah, Georgia, where she manages a private pay group practice with 10 plus clinicians. Along with running her practice, she consults practice owners around the country on how to start and grow a successful faith-based practice. She hosts summits, a weekly podcast, and a membership community for faith-based practice owners called Wise Practice. She has spoken at numerous events such as both the Georgia and Maryland annual professional counselors conferences as well as trainings for Florida's Counseling Association. In 2023 she will be speaking at Meet You in Kentucky, which is for group practice owners, as well as hosting her own summit in Savannah. In her free time, Whitney enjoys spending time with her husband and two girls, running, reading, and relaxing in the backyard. A Passionate Faith-Based Private Practice Consultant Whitney Owens is passionate about connecting faith-based practice owners and making changes in the world by helping them have the lifestyle they want and the work they want to do with God in the process. She believes in the power of faith and how it can make a difference in the lives of those who practice it. According to Whitney, "You can't create it yourself. I can put a structure together, but all I can do is wait on God." Whitney believes in the power of God in connecting people. When God shows up, it's magical and indescribable. Whitney believes in being open to the Spirit and letting it guide her. During a retreat to Asheville, she realized that rushing was her problem. She wasn't making space for the Holy Spirit. The retreat was about rest and making space for the Holy Spirit to stop. Whitney learned that she needs to stop and take time to read and soak in the words of a song instead of just listening to it. She had a weeping moment that reminded her of the importance of community, crying with one another, and making that space to do life differently. Being vulnerable allows people to “know you” and connect with you.  Changing Lives Through Faith-Based Practice Whitney is passionate about changing lives through faith-based practice. She believes that it's important to help faith-based practice owners have the lifestyle they want and the work they want to do with God in the process. Whitney hosts Summits, a weekly podcast and a membership community for faith-based practice owners. She loves to plan big parties with her besties and sell tickets to help her pay for the Summit. She believes that when people come together with open hearts and minds, God will show up and change lives. Breaking Down Your Own Walls in Leadership Whitney believes that breaking down your own walls is essential to being a great leader. According to Whitney, "When you're starting a business, it's hard not to get caught up in the comparison game. You're looking at other people's practices and thinking, oh, they're doing so well, they're doing better than me." She advises against this mentality and recommends being true to yourself and your vision. Whitney believes in taking the time to get to know yourself and understanding what you want. She advises against creating a vision board without knowing what you truly want. Being True to Yourself and Your Vision Whitney believes in being true to yourself and your vision. She believes that it's important to take the time to get to know yourself and your goals before creating a vision board. She recommends looking inward and understanding what you want before creating a board that aligns with your vision. Action Steps Take time for rest and reflection: As Whitney shared, it's important to make space for the Holy Spirit in our lives by taking time for rest and reflection. This can involve setting aside regular periods of time for meditation or prayer, going on retreats, or simply taking a break from the busyness of daily life. Embrace community: Whether it's through attending conferences, joining a support group, or simply reaching out to colleagues in your field, cultivating community can help you to feel supported and connected in your work. Be open to change: As Whitney mentioned, it's important to be open to the Spirit's leading, even if it means deviating from our plans or expectations. This can involve being willing to take risks, trying new things, and being open to feedback and criticism from others. Whitney Owens offers valuable insights for anyone in a leadership position, whether in the field of counseling or elsewhere. By breaking down our own walls and embracing vulnerability, cultivating community, and being open to change, we can become more effective and compassionate leaders, capable of making a positive impact in the world.  Links and Resources Wise Practice Summit 2023 Contact: whitney@whitneyowens.com  Website: Whitneyownes.com and Watersedgecounseling.com FREE PDF on Tips for Marketing with Churches: Whitneyownes.com Instagram: @WhitneyOwensConsulting Facebook: Whitney Owens Podcast: Wise Practice Podcast  Free Facebook Membership Community for Faithbased Practice Owners:

The Soul Care for Therapist podcast, hosted by Dawn Gabriel, recently featured Jessica Walsh, Ph.D., LPC and Hannah Davis, Ph.D., LPC, who shared their insights into supervising and training interns through licensure. The guests discussed how they started working together, creating their counseling practice, and their unique approach to supervision. Dr. Jessica Walsh and Dr. Hannah Davis are the co-founders and co-directors of The Forge Counseling Collective and the Training Institute at Forge where they run a counseling center alongside a unique program for interns and pre-licensed counselors. Starting out - Merging Skills and Combining Forces Jessica Walsh started Forge Counseling Collective about ten years ago and Hannah Davis joined her three years later. They met in their doctoral program in counselor education and supervision. They initially started working next to each other but eventually merged their skills to open a training institute. Hannah had started a small training program of her own and decided to move from another state and join Jessica's private practice. They both saw potential in each other and after realizing their skills were complementary, they decided to merge their practice and combine forces to create a training institute. The duo's partnership has now grown and is an excellent example of how a joint effort can yield significant results. High-Quality Supervision Model During the podcast, the duo explained the benefits of a high-quality supervision model, where both therapists and students receive the support they need. Jessica and Hannah shared how they have been recording and documenting their training sessions to ensure the process is supportive and effective. "We want to train people to not only be excellent therapists but to be good at running a business and understanding that those two things really go hand in hand." They recognize the importance of creating a safe space where therapists and students can show vulnerability without feeling judged. Supervision can be an intense process, and sometimes, students want to hide from feedback or avoid difficult conversations, which is why a safe space is crucial. "We try to create a culture where people feel like they can bring their whole selves, and not just the part that's trying to impress or be perfect, and that they can show up as they are and we'll work with that." Documentation and Feedback Jessica and Hannah also discussed the importance of documentation and feedback in their practice. "So documentation is really important because we can use it as a tool for reflection, but also to help us to give feedback." They record and document their sessions, which allows them to give detailed feedback to their students, encouraging personal and professional growth. Recording sessions also help the students understand how their clients perceive them and how they can improve their interactions. "The feedback that you get from your supervisor is really important because they can help you to improve your practice, and they can also help you to identify areas where you need to work on. "Additionally, the recorded sessions provide students with a resource that they can refer to when they need to review techniques or recall feedback given by their supervisors. Tips and Action Steps The discussion provided excellent insights into the importance of a high-quality supervision model and the benefits of recording and documenting sessions. For therapists looking to train interns, here are a few tips: Prioritize Emotional Safety and Support Supervision can be an intense and vulnerable process. It is essential to create a safe space where therapists and students can show vulnerability without feeling judged. Prioritizing emotional safety and support can help students to grow, make mistakes, and learn from them. Document Sessions Recording and documenting sessions are excellent ways to provide detailed feedback to students and help them understand how their clients perceive them. Recorded sessions also provide students with a resource they can refer to when they need to review techniques or recall feedback given by their supervisors. Develop a Leadership Team Developing a leadership team can help distribute responsibilities, improve efficiency, and provide support to students and therapists. Having team leads, supervisors, and clinical directors can help distribute responsibilities and prevent therapists from becoming overwhelmed. Links and Resources Forge Counseling Collective

Today, we talk about how to build team culture in your practice. Creating the right culture within your practice is a learning process and a growth process as a business owner. Dawn gives tips on building a culture within your workplace that reflects the values and mission of your group practice. We also speak about the importance of soul care and taking care of that side of yourself. Remember, you need to invest in your self-care as much as you do any other part of your practice. Meet Dawn Gabriel The Faith Fringes Podcast hosted by Dawn Gabriel is for anyone who has ever - or who is currently - questioning their connection with God. Do you find yourself wondering if what you believe is true, asking how a loving God can let bad things happen to good people, or questioning how you're supposed to experience God in everyday life? As someone born into a Christian home amidst the Christian culture of the Midwest or "Bible Belt," Dawn has experienced many emotions, unanswered questions, and life-changing moments that altered her perceptions of faith forever. She's here to let you know that everyone's journey in finding a deeper connection with God is different, but that doesn't mean that journeys shouldn't be shared. As a Group Practice Owner, Consultant, wife, boy mom, and Podcaster, Dawn believes that you can - and will - experience God in so many unexpected ways. It's okay to question and challenge everything you've been taught. If you're a Spiritual Explorer, interested in becoming one or looking for an inclusive and safe space where doubt, questions, and curiosity are encouraged, Faith Fringes Podcast is for you. Interviewing For Workplace Culture In Group Practice Dawn started a group practice, but she didn't have any business skills. Sadly, Dawn didn't know about this beautiful world of consulting. For the first three years, Dawn would hire people who could see clients; she didn't streamline her interview process. During year three, Dawn realized she needed to get better at interviewing. Dawn finally understood the need to interview for workplace culture. Plus, Dawn got business consulting. It changed her practice. Hiring the right people for your business is crucial; it can make or break your group practice. Building The Right Culture Within Your Team Building the right culture within your practice is a learning process and a growth process as a business owner. Dawn wanted the therapist to be faith-based, but she didn't want the practice to be faith-based necessarily. Dawn's group practice doesn't overtly advertise that they integrate the Christian faith; instead, they make it more subtle. However, Christian faith is something that is embedded in their workplace culture. She wanted that to be important to the people that she hires. Your Therapists Should Also Be In Therapy It's essential when you're hiring to ask a question somehow to find out if they're in therapy or if they've been in therapy. You want therapists who have worked on their own stuff. Dawn does a three-part interview process. During the second interview, Dawn involves her team. Dawn's team is made up of individual contractors, but they commit to a team atmosphere. They have team retreats and monthly team meetings. The independent contractors commit to those standards. If you're thinking of hiring independent contractors, do your research on how you can implement team meetings or retreats. Taking Care of Your Soul as a Therapist There's a spiritual piece of all of us, whatever faith or religion you choose to believe in and follow. No matter what, there's still this element of something deeper within us that's bigger than us. As therapists, we create and hold sacred space for others; there's something sacred in that room, regardless of what religion one believes. There is healing, hope, and transformation in therapy. It impacts therapists on a deep level. So, it's vital to look at that deep within your own self of what's happening spiritually in your soul. The Importance of Self-Care For Mental Health Practitioners Sometimes we put our worth and our purpose in how we impact others. Often, that can come at the expense of our own self-care. Unfortunately, many people are not putting self-care as a focus. Sometimes it feels better to give to other people. Plus, when we focus on ourselves, lots of stuff will bubble up to the surface. That's why it can almost be easier to help other people rather than take care of ourselves. During the pandemic, therapists needed to focus on self-care because we are simultaneously going through a similar trauma that our clients are going through.  Being transparent… Some of the resources below use affiliate links which simply means we receive a commission if you purchase using the links, at no extra cost to you.
