“I want Zimba to be a key part of the digitization process that we're starting to see in Uganda and other parts of Africa, especially for financial institutions.”  -Isaac Were, USMA ‘16 Isaac Were is the CEO of Zimba Technologies, a SaaS financial technology company that builds cloud-based software to digitize and automate financial institutions as well as provide them with access to capital. Zimba's mission is to bridge financial gaps in developing markets through innovation and technology. Originally from Uganda, Isaac is addressing the problem of access to capital for individuals and business owners in the more rural parts of his home country. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a Biomedical Concentration. In this episode, we discuss: What led Isaac to start Zimba The types of clients Zimba serves and the services the company provides The typical journey for a customer using our Zimba's core banking platform Isaac's most important short-term and long-term goals The biggest challenges Isaac is facing as he works to scale Zimba Isaac explains that in Uganda, a majority of the population lives in villages that are on the outskirts of the major cities. By working with the Savings and Credit Cooperatives to help improve their operations and infrastructure, Zimba can improve access to finance for all people, regardless of location. #MenschMahler - Die Podcast Kolumne - podcast eins GmbH

230821PC MäjestätischMensch Mahler am 21. August 2023Sonntagmorgen. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The best worlds might be grown rather than made. We often talk about these two separate concepts that exist in tension in solid worldbuilding. There’s wonder, this feeling of getting wrapped up in the scale of a setting, the sense of the unknown just beyond your eye line. Then there’s immersion, the grounded sensation that the world is understandable and predictable. Both of these ideas play off one another to create a setting that excites your audience but doesn’t alienate them. What is the bridge between these two seemingly opposing ideas? Questions. This is how you cultivate a setting that grows into more than a core concept. Andrew Zimba joins the show to reveal some sound world building tips. We invited Aleesa in to make sure she was good with the pay of roughly 35k in cash and housing and she was.  I broke into tears (unexpectedly) when I told her that the reason I chose her for this job was because she had come to me early on saying that her goal was to run a place like this and I am putting my faith in her ability to actually run this place one day.   After all the meetings I had to race to my computer to send out this tax donation appeal that Susan had written:   We have 70 precious reasons to ask you to please consider making a year-end, tax-deductible donation to Big Cat Rescue. Their names circle the alphabet several times over: from Apollo (lynx) to Zeus (tiger). From Armani (leopard) to Zabu (white tiger). From Ariel (bobcat) to Zimba (serval). And from Ares (cougar) to Zucari (serval).   If you have already donated, please accept our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for your kindness!   As 2017 comes to a close, we are so grateful for everyone who has visited our sanctuary, followed our cats on social media, taken action to help us pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act and generously donated to our sanctuary. It is only because of your financial support that we can continue to rescue abused, neglected and abandoned exotic cats around the country and provide them with the best possible nutrition and medical care at our sanctuary.   This year we have rescued nine exotic cats, including 5 in December! Maya, an 18-year-old cougar from Ohio (pictured here), was rescued earlier this month after her owner surrendered her to the Department of Agriculture in Ohio. She is certainly enjoying her large enclosure!   And Manny the jaguar and Natalia the Amur leopard have just arrived from a zoo in Omaha. It's been many years since Big Cat Rescue has been home to a jaguar and Manny has already stolen our hearts with his playful antics of storing all of his new toys inside his den at night. We've never had an Amur leopard at the sanctuary before and are enjoying getting to know Natalie's purr-sonality. So far she is quite shy.   You also helped us provide a forever home to a discarded Savannah Cat and you're helping Noel Bobcat, who was hit by a car and left for dead on Christmas day, get the rehab she needs for release back to the wild.   Thank YOU so much for your amazing support of our sanctuary and cats! We hope the cats can count on you one more time in 2017 as you consider making your year-end, tax-deductible charitable donations.   Bigcatrescue.org/tax   Best wishes from your Big Cat Rescue family for a purrfectly healthy and happy New Year!   If you prefer, you can mail a check by December 31st to Howard Baskin at Big Cat Rescue at 12802 Easy Street, Tampa, Florida 33625.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! 2011 Annual Report   Big Cat Rescue is more than just a place that provides permanent care for big cats.  It is a movement;  a change in the tide of human perceptions and is the combined effort of more than 54,000 supporters.  If you are one of them, you are a Big Cat Rescuer and the following is the great work YOU did!  If you haven't helped yet, you can do so now at the top right of the screen or here:  http://bigcatrescue.org/donate   Big Cat Rescue's Mission Statement:  Big Cat Rescue's dual mission is to provide the best home we can for the cats in our care and educate the public about the plight of these majestic animals, both in captivity and in the wild, to end abuse and avoid extinction.  We are Caring for Cats and Ending the Trade   Advances:  With your help we are winning in the battle for compassion! Up until 2003 the number of requests for rescues we had to turn down due to lack of space or funds had roughly doubled every other year, to 312 that year. We feared it would double again to over 500 in 2004. Instead, it has steadily declined since then thanks to the passage of a federal bill and several state bills that restrict the ownership of exotic cats. This year there were only 15 big cats who came to our attention as being abandoned and we were able to take in 10. We offered to take all of the cats who were cougar size or smaller, if their owners would contract to never own another exotic cat, but the rest refused.  We just do not have enough Senior Keeper staff to take on more lions or tigers than the three we took this year.   Volgistics became our new time tracking service on Jan 1, 2012 and has replaced our use of Freshbooks.  Everyone seems to like the big buttons and easy check in and check out process.   Animal Care:   By the end of this year, 106 of our 119 animals are over the age of 12 and 89 are over the age of 15. This is well beyond how long they are designed to live in the wild and much older than most zoo cats.  This is a testament to the excellent animal care we provide, but we are dealing with many more age related illnesses and are losing more of our big cat friends every year.   Rescues:  With the help of some very special donors we were able to rescue Amanda, Arthur and Andre; 3 tigers who had been rescued in 2003 from NJ and sent to Wild Animal Orphanage in TX, which collapsed in 2010.  Max the baby bobcat came to us after the RI DNR seized him from an illegal owner.  5 servals, Zoul, Zouletta, Zimba, Santino and Doodles, who had been kept in a NY basement for 14 years were rescued.  Another serval named Kricket was also brought in from VA when her owner could no longer keep her.  We were also able to help with the placement of another serval, a bobcat and did a lot of rehab consultation work via phone and email.   One of those bobcats was Rufus who came in to a Rehabber on Dec 5 weighing 4 lbs, with a broken jaw, split canine and comatose.  They figured he had been hit by a car, but at 4 lbs couldn't believe that he survived.  After he woke up from the coma he was pretty loopy, but they figured the impact had done brain damage.  They had to wire the jaw shut, tube feed him and removed the broken canine. He is now about 7 lbs, is eating solids on his own and doing much better but appears to be blind.  He was having bad and frequent seizures, but those have almost subsided.  They have asked if we can give him a forever home if his eyesight does not return and we stand ready to help.  On 12/21/11 we had another perfect USDA inspection.   Education:  Our website, BigCatRescue.org underwent a painful renovation from a static html site to a WordPress CMS site during 2010 and 2011.  All of the page names had to be changed to fit the new system which meant a huge drop in traffic and initially a huge drop in inbound links, although, by the end of the year we had gained more than a thousand more inbound links than we had before, so it is going to prove a worth while move.  The site was completely down in the Spring and Summer, but has been stable since August 2011 now.   Our website is primarily an educational tool and according to Alexa we are ranked 464,891 worldwide and 128,777 most visited website in the U.S.  We have 1,104 other sites linking to us.   Our web site addresses local and global concerns about environment and has over 8,347 pages of information, movie clips, sounds, safe interactive online games with a conservation theme and photos. From 1/1/2011 until 12/31/2011 the site was visited 338,715 times, resulting in 764,943 page views.  In any given week the visitors will be from more than 200 countries outside of the U.S. as you can see from this breakdown:  United States 279,011, Canada 17,495, Poland 7,679, United Kingdom 7,610, Australia 2,848, India 2,123, Germany 1,578, France 984, and the Philippines 858 to name a few.   The information provided has helped wildlife rehabilitators identify animals and obtain proper care instruction, helped officials in smuggling cases to identify rare species of exotic cats being illegally traded and those are just a few of the ways that we know the site has had an impact this year.  For search engine optimization reasons we launched BobcatRehab.com  to make it easier for bobcats in trouble to find us.   We offer about 200 outreach and field trips per year and have committed to offering 12 of them for free each year to lower income schools, but have given 18 such free tours this year and expect that demand will continue to rise with the cost of transportation.  Even when we offer the tours for free, many schools cannot come because they cannot afford the $200.00 fee for their busses.  Our Education Department has been writing grant proposals to raise the money needed for the buses.   Big Cat Rescue has been in the press 326 times, in 42+ states including AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, GA, FL, HI, IA, ID, IO, IN, IL, KY, LA, MA, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, VA, VT, WA, WI & WV and dozens of programs of national or international coverage or in countries other than the U.S.   Award Winning Sanctuary:  PC Magazine Names Big Cat Rescue in Top 12 Favorite Charities 2011.  “Big Cat Rescue, which takes in retired circus lions and tigers, also rescues other big cats from people who tried to keep them as pets, and otherwise offers sanctuary to large cats that are not eligible for release into the wild. It's focused on educating people about the unsuitability of the animals as pets, working toward passing laws against roadside zoos, and shutting down breeding programs like the exotic pet trade. They also take in injured wild cats and rehabilitate them for release. The group has a video cam set up in the sanctuary, and they regularly post videos of the big cats. The cats eat a massive amount every day, naturally, so Big Cat Rescue relies on donations and paid tour groups to support them.”—Arielle Rochette  PC Magazine   • 2011 Winner in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good  Big Cat Rescue was given a beautiful Toyota Tundra for being the top voted charity during their competition week. • 9/2/2011  The Tampa Bay Business Journal awarded Big Cat Rescue in 3 categories:  Best Black Tie Event  Favorite Retreat and Team Building Venue and Second Best Fundraiser • The Tampabay Business Journal selected Big Cat Rescue as a semi-finalist for Non Profit of the Year for 2011.   Legislation/Education:  The steady increase in legislation banning private ownership represents recognition by our society that private ownership leads to massive abuse.  Social values evolve.  It took decades to ban slavery in England and for women to win the right to vote in America.  Those ideas started out as “radical” and were held by a small minority.  Gradually more and more people understood and agreed until they became a part of our value system that we take for granted today.  The same trend is happening with private ownership of exotics.  Gradually more and more people are realizing that this simply leads to widespread abuse of these animals.  The best evidence of this is the accelerating trend in state laws.   Just since 2005 eight more states have passed some level of ban. Sweden, Austria, Costa Rica, India, Finland, Bolivia, Greece, China, the UK and Singapore have all banned or restricted the utilization of big cats in circuses-it's time for the U.S. & South Africa to do the same!   14,539 new subscribers joined as an AdvoCat to speak out for the cats at CatLaws.com in 2011 bringing our total number of AdvoCats to  54,447 who sent 134,431 letters to lawmakers and decision makers to protect big cats.   Animal Abusers Exposed, Shut Down and / or Fined:  Big Cat Rescue enabled several under cover operations to gather evidence of exotic cats being abused, bred without regard for where they may end up, violations of the Animal Welfare Act that pertains to the cruel treatment of big cats and endangering the public.  This information was presented to the authorities along with affidavits and supporting evidence that we hope will bring an end to much of the suffering in the facilities we selected as being the worst abusers.   • Inside Edition exposed Joe Schreibvogel of GW Park and the fact that at least 23 tiger cubs died at his facility. • The BBC's Show called America's Most Dangerous Pets with  Louis Theroux suggested their show should have been named, America's Most Dangerous Pet Owners. • Animal Planet's Fatal Attractions interviewed Carole Baskin in Tigers Unleashed about dangerous exotic animal owners including Savage Kingdom's Robert Baudy and Lost Creek where Haley Hilderbrand was killed by a tiger while posing with the cat for her high school yearbook photo. Many of the worst breeders, dealers and tiger-tamer-wanabees were finally shut down between 2008 and 2010 but it appears that USDA did not pursue any of the exotic animal abuse cases in 2011.     Fundraising and Marketing:  We overhauled (OK, Jamie overhauled) our online stores at http://www.bigcatrescue.biz/ and on eBay and greatly increased our sales by doing so.  We currently operate 300+ social networking sites.   Big Cat Rescue was reported favorably in the news 326 times in 2011 which in a 19% increase over 2010.   Some of the national press included shows on  CNN,  MSNBC, National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery and the History Channel in addition to such publications as USA Today, National Geographic and the New York Post and major media coverage in several other countries as well.   Google awarded Big Cat Rescue a grant of $40,000 per month in free AdWords. People who love animals love to share their photos and stories.  In 2008 Big Cat Rescue unleashed a Chat Big Cats community.   Members can post their own blogs, or join in our forums and contests. It is a YouTube/ MySpace styled community made up entirely of animal lovers. By year end there were 2,847 members and 34,359,740,539  videos, songs, photos and blogs posted to the site.  (blows my mind too!)  Get in on the action free at http://www.chatbigcats.com   Best Viral Video Award:  YouTube.  We ended the year with 35,442 subscribers and 37,492,151 views.   By year end we had 323 videos posted on YouTube and other popular sites like google, Blip, MetaCafe, Revver and others.  http://www.youtube.com/bigcatrescue   YouTube Mini Clip Site:  DailyBigCat was launched Nov. 20, 2010 to provide a channel for the mini clips we upload directly from our iPhones.  By year end this site had 2,563 subscribers and 166,724 views.   Our MySpace account now has 7,551 friends. myspace.com/1BigCatRescue We surpassed 54,000 fans on Face Book .  We also enhanced our presence on Care2.org and many other such sites.  We now have 500+ contacts in our LinkedIn presence here:  linkedin.com/in/BigCatRescue Big Cat Rescue now has an Endowment Fund to provide a secure future for the cats. The Fund resides at the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay.  We initiated a program with Capitol One so that you can choose one of our beautiful cats for your credit card image and 1% of all of your purchases will be donated to Big Cat Rescue at no cost to you.   Saving Wild Places for Wild Cats:  Big Cat Rescue funded a $5,000 GPS tracking collar program that will be monitored by researchers with the Snow Leopard Trust. Founded in 1981, the Snow Leopard Trust is the world's leading authority on the study and protection of the endangered snow leopards. This collar will allow researchers to track a wild snow leopard in order to study its habits and territory needs.  A GPS tracking collar has been placed on one of the cubs of Khashaa, a female and mother snow leopard, within the study area. The cub, a male, is already pretty big at one and a half years old. We find this so exciting because it will help us begin to answer some of the unanswered questions about snow leopards, including information about dispersal patterns.   Big Cat Rescue has been working with WildTracks this year to provide images of our tigers' paw prints for entry into their computer program which can determine who a cat is by their tracks when there are enough tracks submitted to use for comparison.  Learn more and see photos of the print collection at http://bigcatrescue.org/2011/today-at-big-cat-rescue-sept-22   Big Cat Rescue offered to sponsor the first ever Florida Panther Festival if they agreed not to use any live cats at their exhibits.  They did not take us up on the offer to sponsor the event, but did assure us that they would not exploit cats this way.  Our camera traps have been set in various locations to monitor wildlife populations and poachers in the area.   Helping Others: After delivering a couple of free webinars for the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), Patty asked if we would host their first in person 2 day Workshop. Howard Baskin presented on our fundraising streams and the history of Big Cat Rescue, Jeff Kremer presented on donor recognition while giving the group of 20+ attendees a tour, Chris Poole spoke on social marketing and networking, Patty Ragan shared the value of hiring a coach, Kari Bagnall illustrated how to get the most out of a tabling event, Patty Finch taught grant writing, teaching your board how to be helpful and how to avoid “founder's syndrome” and I shared how we use google Apps, how we manage over 100 top notch volunteers, why it is important to have a plan and stick to it.   Big Cat Rescue later hosted HSUS Sanctuary CEO's for their annual retreat and gave them an inside look at how we operate.  In both the GFAS and HSUS workshops we shared our Intranet site along with all of our training documents and all of the assets to create a “sanctuary in a box.”  All of these tools are included on our website behind a $1.00 pay wall so that anyone who wishes to improve their facility has access to everything we do.   Big Cat Rescue also helped the Humane Society Legislative Fund in their work to end puppy mills because the same laws would protect cats and kittens from use in kitten mills as well.   Big Cat Rescue provided our CatLaws.com service to Animal Coalition of Tampa in their efforts to send a powerful message to the Hillsborough County Commissioners on two subjects.  1. Was to fund the voucher program for spaying and neutering dogs and cats for low income owners.  2. Was to ban the cruel practice of chaining dogs.   As with every year we supplied Free Passes, Certificates for Feeding Tours and Keeper Tours, and Two For One Passes to many other animal causes to use in their fundraising efforts.  We donate primarily to those organizations that are providing services to cats of all sizes.  We do donate to some human related fundraisers as well, but animal causes make up 3% of all charities and yet compete for less than 1% of all donated dollars.   Officers and Members of the Board of Directors in 2011 and meetings: CEO and Founder  Carole Baskin (not compensated by BCR) President and Chairman of the Board Jamie Veronica (not compensated by BCR for her role as a Director) Secretary & Treasurer Howard Baskin (not compensated by BCR for his role as a Director) VP Director Lisa Shaw (not compensated by BCR) Director Mary Lou Geis (not compensated by BCR) Pamela Rodriguez (not compensated by BCR), Darren Kipnis (not compensated by BCR), Vincent Pavese (not compensated by BCR), and Keith Lawless (not compensated by BCR).  These members met for quarterly board meetings at the sanctuary.  The board met 5 times in 2011.   Paid Staff:  Operations Manager & Volunteer Coordinator Gale Ingham Staff Manager, Editor & Creative Director Jamie Veronica Gift Shop & Guest Services  Honey Wayton Intern Recruiter & Data Management Chelsea Feeny Education Director Dr. Beth Kamhi and her assistant Willow Hecht Vernon Stairs Cage Builder and Maintenance Scott Haller Cage Building Apprentice and Maintenance Videographer and Social Networking Chris Poole Director of Donor Appreciation  Jeff Kremer Assistant to Operations Manager and Staff Relief Person Jennifer Flatt, CFO Howard Baskin, PR Susan Bass and  LaWanna Mitchell is an independent contractor who works remotely on web issues. Tribute to Zoul the Serval 3/1/1997- 10/29/2011  Arrived at Big Cat Rescue 4/29/2011   Zoul let us know, as most do, that something was terribly wrong when he stopped eating.  We took him to the vet for testing and found that he had moderate to severe kidney disease, fluid in his lungs, and one of the worst cases of spondylosis the vet had seen. Yet, he had shown no signs of this painful and debilitating condition.  Zoul was not able to wake up from the sedation, despite the heroic efforts of his caregivers, and sadly passed away in his sleep.  Though he only lived here with us at Big Cat Rescue for 6 months, we had all grown to love him and will miss him.   ZOUL'S RESCUE STORY   A woman in NY was battling cancer, her sister had run off leaving her with her three children ages 6-17 and her home was in foreclosure…. she also had five servals living in her basement!   She would never be able to rent an apartment to keep her five servals and was left no choice but to try and find them a new home. After careful consideration, we decided that we were able to rescue the 5 servals and immediately went into action. All the servals currently at the sanctuary live alone, which they prefer as they're solitary by nature, so in order to house 5 servals in one enclosure we had to get creative. We joined two existing enclosures together which made one huge 3000 sq ft space that the servals could roam around in and enjoy.   On top of joining the enclosures together, we added platforms, den boxes, hideaway areas and we were told they had a waterfall as kittens and loved it, so we also added a pool! We received the import permits, loaded the van with carriers and equipment then started on the long drive to New York while others finished preparing the enclosure.   We arrived in Cohoes, New York, just north of Albany, to a typical residential neighborhood.  The 5 servals had been kept in the basement of the house which had been converted into a living room and, except for a few escapes over the years including an incident where one of the owners was bit and hospitalized for a week, they'd never spent any time outside. There were 4 males, Santino, Doodles, Zoul and Zimba and 1 female Zouletta, all 5 had been declawed and were between the ages of 12 and 14 years.   All the servals, except for Doodles, are related and had been purchased from a pet store in Latham NY, Doodles was added to the serval pack at a later date and ironically belonged to a man in Florida whose wife told him to choose between her and the cat!   It was a kind of a bizarre and an uneasy experience to walk into the basement area and see the 5 servals hanging out in front of the fire, by the TV and on top of the hot tub! It is hard to imagine that these cats spent much time out of their concrete floored cell because the furniture and hot tub cover were not chewed and these five love to chew! But most of all it was just sad to see these 5 wild cats in such cramped unnatural conditions. The owners obviously loved the cats and had planned on them being a part of their life, they'd constructed a caged area with a drain in the floor so they could clean more easily and shut them off into the area when they had company or weren't in the house. The cats weren't living in filthy conditions, it was obvious they'd been fed as they all looked overweight, the owners recounted stories of them playing on pool tables and with their air hockey game, but it didn't change the fact that their ignorance had led to the cats living on concrete in these dungeon like settings for over a decade….   Of course, life has lots of surprises and circumstances change and the owners are now unable to afford or house the servals any longer…   So the rescue began…   With the help of the owners, we managed to get four of the five servals into the carriers quite easily, but Doodles wasn't impressed with these strangers invading his territory and wouldn't go into the carrier even after we tried using food to lure him in, so he had to be netted.  Sedating cats is always the last resort, certain cats can react badly to the drugs, so we never do this unless it's absolutely necessary…   With all 5 servals safely loaded into the BCR van and the last tearful goodbyes said, we began our long drive back to Tampa.  We drove straight through the night and over 20 hours later arrived back at the sanctuary!  More staff members were waiting to help unload the cats.  We weighed all the servals on the way to their new enclosure, they weighed between 31 and 42lbs.  Ideally, they should have weighed between 20 and 30lbs.   We lined the carriers up and prepared them so we could simply unlatch the doors when we were out of the enclosure. Santino, easily recognizable with his old injury of a broken ear, was the first to emerge from the carriers and explore. One by one, the other servals finally began to follow his lead and introduced themselves to the outside world and their new home. - Jamie Veronica   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. Oooooo this health series is really coming for my edges. Like Carolyn does not hold anything back as she explains how our spiritual pain manifests in her body. Basically when we have physical ailments we are treating the symptom and not the disease, the root cause. If you listen carefully there are a couple of moments that Carolyn did a cold read on issues I have. So this episode is a combination of physical and spiritual health.  Carolyn Zimba was born in Zambia, and emigrated to England at the age of 5. She went back to Zambia at 13 and went back to England at 18 for university. Carolyn is a movement specialist even though her university degree was in engineering. It is not surprising that she has a keen interest in the mechanics of bodies, however, her work is done on the Spiritual plane. For a long time Carolyn was searching for something, until God found her. It was only then that she felt complete. Quotes "We are the sum accumulation of all of our experiences"   "What energy do we put in these stories we tell about ourselves"   "[Unforgiveness] is like you taking poison and expecting someone else to die"   "Trauma sits in your body"   "I have found that everything that is not of God, is very temporary"   Connect with Carolyn Instagram: @empoweredalignment Website: https://www.theea.life/online  LinkedIn: Carolyn Zimba  Facebook: Empowered Alignment   KNOW your Roots, Grow your Purpose LINKS: www.instagram.com/chulu_bydesign www.facebook.com/chulubydesign  Join the Africana Woman Visionaries: https://www.facebook.com/groups/708489836426989  Africana Woman Blog: https://www.africanawoman.com/

Quotes “We are the sum accumulation of all of our experiences”   “What energy do we put in these stories we tell about ourselves”   “[Unforgiveness] is like you taking poison and expecting someone else to die”   “Trauma sits in your body”   “I have found that everything that is not of God, is very temporary”   Connect with Carolyn Instagram: @empoweredalignment Website: https://www.theea.life/online  LinkedIn: Carolyn Zimba  Facebook: Empowered Alignment   KNOW your Roots, Grow your Purpose LINKS: www.instagram.com/chulu_bydesign www.facebook.com/chulubydesign  Join the Africana Woman Visionaries: https://www.facebook.com/groups/708489836426989  Africana Woman Blog: https://www.africanawoman.com/

It was not until he was in London when the ban was a possibility. By the time he was in Johannesburg still no official ban. 09:50 – Within a few days of arriving in Africa, the ban was coming. Some of the work they had planned, got crammed into 3-days. 12:09 – Tirrell explains the type of work that was being done to help people improve their vision. 14:37 – What city in Contra Costa would be closest to the town he stayed in Africa. What is Bang! Power Dance? I spoke with the creator of Bang, Amanda Strand about how she fell in love with group fitness, her background in dance, and how much fun Bang can be. It turns out that Bang is more boxing than dance! You can check out Bang! Power Dance at Onelife Fitness! That is also where it got its start before it hit the world stage! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/freedomgroupexercise/ Website: https://freedomgroupexercise.com/ iTunes - https://goo.gl/7HS1u4 Google Play - https://goo.gl/Whff9U Every Interview - http://www.wfre.com/interesting-people-podcast/ Transcript Patrick Hanes: [00:00:18] Welcome to the Interesting People Podcast today I'm joined by Amanda Strand the creator of Bang! Power Dance and the founder of the Freedom Group Exercise. How's it going? Amanda Strand: [00:00:28] It's great to be here. Patrick Hanes: [00:00:29] This weekend April 7th. Team WFRE is going to be working with you to put on a fundraiser. A part Zumba part Bang! Power Dance event and One Life Fitness. What is Bang! Power Dance? Amanda Strand: [00:00:40] (laughs) Bang! Power Dance is a group exercise class. It's pre choreographed which means that people learn the choreography and they can come back week after week and improve as they learn the choreography so it's not a brand new class every single time. So we change about four songs out of 14. Every single class is a mixed fitness class so it's not just dance. So we say Bang! Power Dance because there's dance in it. But there's also hit interval training. There's body weight training there's aerobics lots and lots of boxing. I would say it's urban inspired. We have a lot of hip hop some world music some Bhangra just a mix of what's currently on the radio as well. Patrick Hanes: [00:01:20] You created Bang! Power Dance. A lot of people know about Zumba did you do Zumba before Bang. What was the thought process that led to Bang. Amanda Strand: [00:01:27] I did actually teach Zumba and I also taught to another class called Body Step which is a step aerobics format and I really enjoyed both of those. But as I started teaching Zumba I realized that I really wasn't teaching Zumba the way it ought to be taught because I was starting to go in a new direction. I really like boxing and I really do like aerobics and intensity is important because I have four children. I only had one hour to workout and I really wanted to get it all in in one hour. I really wanted the classes that I taught to be more intense than maybe some other people teach when they're teaching Zumba or other classes. Patrick Hanes: [00:02:03] So Bang I guess it's earning its exclamation point then. : [00:02:06] I think so. I think it is intense and we do use weighted gloves so we have a half pound weight on each hand which really jacks up the intensity. It's a high option though it's not right for everybody. People with shoulder injuries probably wouldn't want to use the weighted gloves. They also look really nice. So we're all about this swag with bang as well. Patrick Hanes: [00:02:25] Oh fantastic. How long is a Bang class? Would you say an hour? Amanda Strand: [00:02:28] It's about 52 minutes. 52 to 55 minutes. It's 14 songs and it can be designed to be more boxing more aerobics or more dance. Depending on what the instructor likes their style and also of course first and foremost what the members like best. Patrick Hanes: [00:02:42] Do you have a background of boxing? Amanda Strand: [00:02:44] No I don't actually I discovered a love for boxing. After having my four children. I found it was a really good way to release some of the tension of being a stay at home mom which I was for a very long time. Patrick Hanes: [00:02:57] Is it shadowboxing or is there actually bag involved in the club? Amanda Strand: [00:03:00] It's shadowboxing. I do work with our instructors though with a heavy bag just so they can really feel where their placement is because I feel like if they do it authentically then the members get a better experience. It's also safer. Patrick Hanes: [00:03:10] Did you have a background in fitness instruction. Amanda Strand: [00:03:13] I actually started out in theater and dance. I started out as a dancer. I was actually a ballerina. So our other format besides Bang! Power Dance is actually called Freedom BARRE which is B A R R E which is a ballet inspired workout. It's also really intense but it's a low impact. There's weight training involved as well. Lots of good core work. Patrick Hanes: [00:03:34] So you said you were in the theater? Amanda Strand: [00:03:35] Well, I started doing it when I was a very young child and eventually I went and up at the Tisch School the Arts at New York University. I dance theater there and also film. Patrick Hanes: [00:03:44] OH! Also film. Amanda Strand: [00:03:46] Yes, I actually was in a movie with Hugh Grant. Patrick Hanes: [00:03:49] Oh neat. All right. You are now my second guess that probably has an IMDB page. I'm stoked. Amanda Strand: [00:03:54] No! It's a very obscure movie. Patrick Hanes: [00:03:57] Oh that's too much fun. What kind of theater did you do? Amanda Strand: [00:04:00] I did musicals and I did straight plays as well. And my husband is actually a playwright. His new musical is opening in two weeks. It's called Snow Child at Arena Stage. Patrick Hanes: [00:04:09] And he picked the perfect spring release a play called Snow child it's still snowing this spring! Amanda Strand: [00:04:13] Yes. Patrick Hanes: [00:04:14] Well that's awesome. Amanda Strand: [00:04:15] I didn't really discover teaching fitness until after my fourth child was born. And I was really out of shape I was about 65 pounds heavier than I am now. And I said to myself I've got to do something. So I went to one life and I got a membership. They had child care which was I absolutely needed the child care. I put all of my kids in the childcare! Kiss them goodbye and the very first thing I did was to go into the group exercise studio to take a class and the first class I took was with one of our fitness directors Melissa Bennett. She's not at the North location but she works for OneLife took a class with her and that was all it took. Patrick Hanes: [00:04:56] When did you start Freedom Group Exercise and what are some of the advantages of group fitness that you think? Amanda Strand: [00:05:01] I founded Freedom Group Exercise in 2015 because there are several group exercise companies in the market right now. I thought there needed to be a more inclusive group exercise company. And what that means is we're very interested in embracing people that come into the group exercise studio from every walk of life, every age, every body type, and also diversity is important to us diversity of music celebrating and embracing everybody whoever walks in the door being able to meet them wherever they are and then lift them up and give them a reason to be inspired and encouraged to keep going no matter what. Even if I tell them when it gets really hard particularly during the aerobics portion of the class in Bang I say you can always do a step touch. And if a touches too much for you you can just try and encourage someone else. If you're struggling that can help you stay inspired as well. Patrick Hanes: [00:05:51] So with groups of is there a danger some people like shift into the back. Amanda Strand: [00:05:54] It's interesting you say that because we like to say that Freedom Group Exercise is about the back row. So Bang we say as a back row format where our instructors are trained in our trainings to teach to the back row rather than the front row. So the front row people tend to be the people most familiar with the workout oftentimes they're the most fit. They tend not to be as self-conscious because they know what they're doing. But the back row people are the ones that are the most concerned self-conscious they may be deconditioned they may be injured or have other concerns. It may be their first time we really work with our instructors to try and reach those people first and foremost. Patrick Hanes: [00:06:30] You are doing pre choreographed routines. Do they just learn that in the class? Is there a video they watch to kind of figure out the steps? How do they prepare for that? Amanda Strand: [00:06:38] One of the things that happens sometimes in group fitness is it's too complicated for the average new person when they first walk in the door. One of the things that is my job is to really make the choreography user friendly so that people can do it right off the bat. Simple and then to progress it so that it becomes more intense in terms of going from a step touch to a jumping jack for instance going from a march to a run. Those are just some examples so the level one people can stay with the march but those people that are level twos and threes can start to ladder it up and intensify the workout. But they decide what's best for them. And we always say at the beginning of every class. Fake it till you make it. Patrick Hanes: [00:07:19] I think that's the best fitness advice that anyone can give. With 14 songs. Is there like a rhythm you like to set to it? Is it like a slower song at first the bells or crescendo and then you have cooldown songs? What's the structure of a Bang? Amanda Strand: [00:07:30] Well the structure is that we always start with the warm up and we always end with a cooldown and what happens in the middle is that we have at least five intense songs three of them have intervals in them and two of them have intense boxing series in them and then in between we have some periods where the intervals are less intense and people can do things like squats but we try to keep it fun first and foremost it needs to be fun. Everything that happens in the group exercise studio needs to be fun to keep people motivated and enjoying what they're doing. Patrick Hanes: [00:07:59] Is Bang! Power Dance something that's in mornings and afternoons when the Kids Club is open? Amanda Strand: [00:08:03] Primarily group exercise classes are scheduled so that they are happening when the childcare is open. Group exercise tends to be around 80 to 85 percent female. That's not to say that fathers and guardians grandfathers don't bring their kids to the childcare because they do too. It just isn't as frequent. But we welcome everybody in the group exercise studio. Patrick Hanes: [00:08:24] Did you say 80 percent women? Amanda Strand: [00:08:25] Tends to be 80 percent women but we find a lot of men like Bang because I said it's mixed fitness it's not just dance it's a little bit of grooving but it's not complicated dance steps as much as it is fun simple dance steps. Patrick Hanes: [00:08:38] I can see some dudes getting into the boxing aspect of it too. Amanda Strand: [00:08:41] Yes for sure. We box to the beat. I feel that it intensifies the workout to be doing the boxing to a beat. Were just recently adding an L.L. Cool J song just makes you want a box. Patrick Hanes: [00:08:53] So for this weekend Zumba and Bang. Is it Zimba first then Bang? Amanda Strand: [00:08:58] I believe it's going to be a mix when it's Zumba they'll let everybody know that it's Zumba and when it's Bang it will be identified as Bang! Patrick Hanes: [00:09:06] Oh cool so I'll go back and forth. ZUMBA! Amanda Strand: [00:09:09] Right. So there's Zumba lovers will have their time and then everybody can enjoy both formats because they're both really fun. Patrick Hanes: [00:09:16] Do you see a lot of crossover with that? Amanda Strand: [00:09:17] What we really encourage in terms of the culture we create in our company is that it's really not about possessiveness or being only supportive of our formats. We believe that everything that happens at the gym is helping somebody. So we're all about encouragement all the formats are wonderful. There's strength training formats at North OneLife. There's Body Pump, there's body combat, there's something for everybody there's spin, there's Aqua which happens in the pool exercise in the pool, yoga and then of course as you mentioned you and I were talking before about the personal training is incredible we also have group personal training that's really exciting option for people you can come with a buddy and do the workout paired up together in Zone 4 area. So it's really something for everybody. Patrick Hanes: [00:10:02] Is there any advice you would give someone who wants to get into a group fitness class that isn't necessarily done it before. Amanda Strand: [00:10:08] I would encourage them to go at least three times to the same class whatever class it is maybe a different instructor but go three times to the same class before you decide whether or not you like it. Keep going! Don't give up on yourself or the class too soon. Patrick Hanes: [00:10:25] Well thank you so much for your time. Now I know a Bang! Power Dance is. I end every interview with the exact same question. What has you excited for this year? What are you looking forward to? Amanda Strand: [00:10:34] Well we've expanded a lot this year. I'm very excited that we're now in four countries. We're on the West Coast in the south. In Chicago. New York City. We're expanding so rapidly. It makes my head spin and I feel very blessed that I have an incredible team because I didn't do it. My team did it with their hardwork and belief and also our venue partners. Onelife is very important to me because they were the very first gym ever to program a bang class. They'll always be very dear to my heart. Patrick Hanes: [00:11:05] I'm going to break my last question rule and you say four countries. Amanda Strand: [00:11:07] Yes. Patrick Hanes: [00:11:08] What are the other countries? Amanda Strand: [00:11:09] Germany, Japan, Dominican Republic, and Canada. Patrick Hanes: [00:11:12] Oh cool. So in Germany are there any like lederhosen beer hall version of bang yet?. Amanda Strand: [00:11:17] I'm not exactly sure. Patrick Hanes: [00:11:21] Thank you so much. Amanda Strand: [00:11:22] Thank you.

This episode is really good for watching on the YouTube channel.  The audio may be hard to listen to.  Jeff Zimba and I drive thru the woods of Maine and shoot machine guns. We do stop a few times to talk without the engine running. Jeff Zimba and I take a UTV thru the woods and talk about his start in AR15/M16s, and writing and reviewing and taking firearms apart to see how they work. We talk a bit about hunting, too.  Each of the video segments are started by a segment shooting one of Jeff's machine guns.  You'll hear this about every 10 minutes or so.  Jeff wrote a book called The Evolution of the Black Rifle which can be found on amazon.  His website is bigshooterist.com, also at full30.com/channels/bigshooterist, youtube.com/user/Bigshooterist, and bigshooterist on Instagram, Facebook.com/GunTestVids. Many thanks to Clover Lawson for connecting me with Jeff!! Thanks to Jeff for taking a few hours to hang with me!

On this episode we finally reveal the very important results of the Twitter poll we ran to get to the bottom of whether we should continue to talk about reality shows or not. We also dusted off Deleted Tweets and discussed whether we'd rather never have to put gas in our cars or never have to pee again, if given the choice. Plus we offered some advice, did a round of Just Me Or Everyone, talked about toiletries and olives and featured an adoptable dog named Zimba.
