If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “Failure. And more importantly why it's the best teacher and most important part of growth - but we never talk about it.”______________________With a combined 15 years experience on the frontlines of diplomacy and conflict, David Knoff's career has taken him to all corners of the globe. Specialising in remote leadership, isolation, resilience and leadership through adversity, David's story is a unique example of adventure and challenges in the harshest environments and circumstances. David's story began as a Platoon Commander in the Solomon Islands, after which, his lessons in empathy and adaptability carried him to Pakistan, where he navigated the ever-changing political landscape. He then took a sabbatical from diplomacy and worked as a freelance photographer based in Istanbul, following the stories of refugees escaping the growing conflict in Syria to the ancient history of the Mediterranean. As the conflict grew in Syria and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) threatened regional security, David was part of Australia's contribution to Operational Enduring Freedom and the international effort to defeat ISIS. Seeking a change of environment and pace but looking for a role that would draw on all his previous experience, David embarked on an Antarctic Expedition to lead Australia's Davis Research Station for a year. What he and his team couldn't have predicted was that whilst they were away, a global pandemic would change the world they left behind and find them isolated longer than ever expected. Returning in April 2021 after spending an astonishing 537 days away, David penned the bestseller '537 Days of Winter'. He now leads Antarctic expeditions as a Voyage and Deep Field Leader, enhancing our understanding of the world's most remote wilderness.David's story is not like any I've heard before & I've been looking forward to sitting down with him._______For more information about David, check out these places;-Website: https://davidknoff.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/537daysofwinterLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-knoff-1851b0a5/Head to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com
Started with a deadly ISIS attack in Syria which killed dozens of people, and the raid US SOF did there and killed a terrorist. Also Chinese spy balloon fallout, Ohio train disaster, MSU shooting, race-faking woman activist, Navy fitness test zeroed, and a UK guy gets caught mid-thrust banging mayor's horse. For participating in anti-government protests, the Syrian government arrested teenage children and tortured them by pulling out their fingernails. They packed oil barrels with shrapnel and explosives and dropped them from planes into streets crowded with innocent civilians. Using his old Nokia phone Aziz captured some of the most verifiable evidence of the mass murders by the Syrian government and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). They launched what has become known globally as Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS). Though Aziz escaped after many arrests and interrogations, many of the young people that told the world of the horrors in Syria did not make it out. Some are dead, others still in prison 10 years on and some live undercover in exile. This is the story of hope for freedom Syria. This is a public episode. This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily Newsbrief for Monday, August 29th, 2022. I hope you had an excellent weekend of rest, and worship with you and yours, so without further adieu, here’s what you may have missed over the weekend! https://www.theblaze.com/news/covid-booster-shots-omicron-fda FDA to authorize new COVID booster shots for Omicron before trials on humans, will instead rely on testing on mice The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to authorize new COVID-19 booster shots this week. The booster shots will be released months before trials on humans are completed, according to a new report. New COVID-19 booster shots that target the latest Omicron variant will be approved by the FDA this week, the Wall Street Journal reported. The new booster shot will be "bivalent" – which means it can target the original COVID-19 strain and the Omicron BA.5 subvariant. The booster shot will likely be available to Americans despite not having been tested on humans. Instead, the FDA will rely on testing on mice, data from current COVID-19 vaccines, and earlier iterations of boosters. The Wall Street Journal noted, "The Food and Drug Administration is expected to authorize new COVID-19 booster shots this week without a staple of its normal decision-making process: data from a study showing whether the shots were safe and worked in humans." FDA Commissioner Robert Califf issued a statement on Twitter regarding how the government agency will likely make a decision in granting emergency use authorization (EUA) for booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer. "FDA will rely on the totality of the available evidence in making a decision, including: Clinical trial data from other bivalent mRNA COVID-19 boosters RWE from current COVID-19 vaccines administered to millions of people, non-clinical data for the bivalent BA.4/5 vaccines, bivalent and multivalent vaccines are very common and modifying a vaccine to include different virus strains often does not require a change in other ingredients," Califf said on Twitter. Earlier this month, White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha expected the boosters to be available by "early to mid-September." https://www.theepochtimes.com/3-dead-after-shooter-opens-fire-at-oregon-shopping-center_4695212.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport In Oregon, tragic news, as 3 Dead After Shooter Opens Fire at Oregon Shopping Center A gunman armed with an AR-15-style rifle opened fire in a shopping center in Bend, Oregon, on Sunday evening, killing at least two people, authorities have confirmed. An individual who is believed to be the shooter was also found dead at the scene, police said, taking the death toll to three. Officers and emergency medics responded to multiple 911 calls of shots being fired at the Forum Shopping Center in Brend, which is approximately 160 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon, at about 7:04 p.m. Officials believe the shooter, who was only identified as a male, entered from a residential area behind the shopping center and moved through the parking lot while shooting rounds from an AR-15-style rifle. When officers arrived at the grocery store, police believe shots were still being fired, Krantz said. Officers found the suspected shooter dead inside the store. The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, Krantz said, and multiple agencies are involved including the FBI. https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/gov-glenn-youngkin-vows-stop-ridiculous-state-ban-gas-vehicles Oh look! A governor with some brains! Take note Newsome & Inslee, Gov. Glenn Youngkin vows to stop 'ridiculous' state ban on gas vehicles Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin is working to dismantle Virginia's push toward electric vehicles, calling the move "ridiculous" in a Sunday statement. Virginia's former governor, Democrat Ralph Northam, signed legislation in 2021 tying the state's emissions policies to the California Air Resources Board. The board has imposed a regimen to eliminate the sale of gas and diesel vehicles by 2035, forcing Virginia to do the same thanks to the 2021 law. "In an effort to turn Virginia into California, liberal politicians who previously ran our government sold Virginia out by subjecting Virginia drivers to California vehicle laws," Youngkin wrote in a statement on Twitter. "Now, under that pact, Virginians will be forced to adopt the California law that prohibits the sale of gas and diesel-fueled vehicles." "I am already at work to prevent this ridiculous edict from being forced on Virginians. California’s out of touch laws have no place in our Commonwealth," he continued. Youngkin already has support for the move from the Republican-held House of Delegates. "House Republicans will advance legislation in 2023 to put Virginians back in charge of Virginia’s auto emission standards and its vehicle marketplace. Virginia is not, and should not be, California," House Speaker Todd Gilbert said in a statement. Northam and his fellow Democrats passed the legislation when the party held full control of the Virginia government last year. The raids took place on the morning of August 25 in Mazar-e-Sharif, which is the capital of Afghanistan’s Balkh province, Khaama Press reported citing unnamed sources. The news agency said Taliban spokesman Asif Waziri, who serves Balkh’s “office of the chief of police” confirmed the raids in the northern capital. “Taliban forces are conducting door-to-door searches in an effort to combat ISIS, obtain state weapons and collect undocumented guns, as well as track down suspected criminals,” the Taliban spokesman added. Waziri referenced the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which is an international jihadist terror group present in Afghanistan in the form of an offshoot called ISIS-Khorasan Province (ISIS-K). ISIS-K claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport on August 26, 2021, that killed 13 U.S. servicemembers and hundreds of Afghans. The attack took place as the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden oversaw a chaotic withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized control of Kabul, the nation’s seat of government, on August 15, 2021. The Taliban had previously ruled Kabul from 1996 to 2001 before Washington launched a nearly 20-year-long War in Afghanistan in late 2001 that ousted the Sunni Islam-based terror group from the capital and replaced it with a U.S.-backed Afghan government administration. In a reversal of the action almost two decades later, the Taliban reconquered Kabul last summer and have since reestablished sharia, or Islamic law, as the basis of Afghanistan’s legal system. This security situation wasn’t an item that caught us off-guard. It didn’t sneak up on us—it’s just another consequence of Joe Biden’s destructive policies. For all his time in DC, it’s still amazing that he remains one of the worst foreign policy minds in American politics. The Delaware liberal has been wrong on every significant American foreign policy effort for the past 40 years, and this Afghanistan pickle is no different. On Fox News Sunday, retired Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. admitted that going back to Afghanistan, the graveyard of empires, was only a matter of time, given the increased activities of radical Islamic terrorists. McKenzie was the last commander of US-NATO forces in Afghanistan before our shambolic withdrawal. The Council of Foreign Relations had a detailed memorandum about the rising terror threat and how, unsurprisingly, the Taliban being allies of groups like al-Qaeda, have given their terror pals a lifeline to conduct their global campaign of jihad. The nation’s third-world dynamics and failing state status also serve as a magnet for terror groups. Genderal McKenzie Jr. was asked: “Do you think troops will have to be sent back to Afghanistan?” He responded: “That’s a difficult question…the threat is growing in Afghanistan, and it's merely a matter of time.” https://www.dailywire.com/news/libs-of-tiktok-locked-out-of-twitter-again Oh look, censorship is back! Libs of TikTok Locked Out of Twitter – Again Twitter reportedly blocked the popular Libs of TikTok account on Saturday, keeping its owner from posting or logging in over alleged violations of the social media platform’s guidelines. Libs of TikTok has become a prevalent Twitter account over its posts that share examples of far-left videos from TikTok, including topics like LGBT activism, critical race theory, and public education issues. Babylon CEO Seth Dillon shared a screenshot of the “hateful conduct” message the Libs of TikTok account claimed to have received. “Hi Libs of TikTok, your account, @libsoftiktok has been locked for violating the Twitter rules,” the message read. “You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease,” the message added. “Please note that repeated violations may lead to a permanent suspension of your account. Proceed to Twitter now to fix the issue with your account.” The message did not mention the particular post or posts that led to the locked-out account. One of the account’s last messages before being locked out was posted on Thursday. The post included audio that claimed that the Children’s National Hospital performed “gender-affirming” hysterectomies on minors, including those 16 years old and younger. It’s not the first time the popular account has been targeted in recent weeks. Libs of TikTok was permanently suspended from Facebook just one week earlier. Aaron Rodgers Says NFL ‘Stooges’ Threatened Players with Their Jobs over Vaccines Another revelation by Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in his interview with Joe Rogan revealed how the NFL threatened players by holding their jobs hostage unless they got vaccinated. During the August 27 Joe Rogan podcast in which Rodgers admitted that he purposefully misled the media on his vaccination status, Rodgers also blasted the NFL for its efforts to force players to take the jab. Rodgers added that the NFL told players that they would also sacrifice their pay for any forfeited games as another way to force compliance. Ya know, Aaron Rodgers has annoyed me in the past, but I gotta give him props here for having a spine… he and Novak Djokovic, who by the way, isn’t allowed to play at the U.S. Open this year because of his vaccination status. Now we gotta wrap up today’s newsbrief with my favorite topic… sports! https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2022/08/28/watch-aaron-rodgers-says-nfl-stooges-threatened-players-their-jobs-vaccines/ Green Bay Packers’ quarterback, Aaron Rodgers is at it again! Rodgers slammed the NFL for “virtue signaling” over the vax and added that the league sent out “stooges” to force compliance. https://twitter.com/i/status/1563713875421315075 - Play Video 0:05- LANGUAGE WARNING Rodgers said that the teams were bullied to force compliance and were told that they would have to forfeit games if they had a certain number of players and staffers out with positive COVID results. The league began telling teams of the forfeit rule in July of 2021. This after he JUST WON Wimbledon… Oh interestingly enough… Moderna, is a sponsor at the U.S. Open this year… Coincidence? I’ll let you decide. By 2014 The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was in control of a good chunk of both Syria and Iraq. All of a sudden it was all anyone was talking about in the Western World. It got personal when a video titled "A Message to America" was uploaded to YouTube that showed the beheading of an American Journalist named James Foley. Americans were angry, President Obama ordered airstrikes and there was even talk of the deployment of the US Military. But where did they come from? And why were they so bloodthirsty? The story of ISIS is a complicated one, but it is also important. So join us this week as we go over the sad story of one of the most despicable terrorist groups in history.
Started by detailing the US raid on the ISIS leader compound in Syria, as well as the report of the Kabul Airport suicide bomber. Then it was the Russia-China summit, the Aussie unspeakable public sex act, Avenatti convicted (again,) USS Cole bomber trial to start soon (maybe,) and a woman in a San Francisco grocery store was apparently so oblivious that she failed to notice a man behind her pleasuring/finishing himself onto her clothes. Music: Kublai Khan Tx/"self-destruct"
Got started this week with the crazy prison battle in Syria and then switched over to the Jordanian border guards waxing dozens of smugglers. Then it was Neil Young and Spotify, Military jet crashes in South China Sea, Stowaway flies from Johannesburg to Amsterdam and survives, and the former NYC governor apparently liked being walked like a dog and pegged by his Russian prostitute. Music: Agethe & Regrets/"Je Ne Veux Pas Rentrer Chez Moi Seule"
In February 2015, the former Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) released a video showing their destruction of Mesopotamian antiquities at the museum of Mosul. Although perhaps ironic that images are used to show the destruction of images, a video intended to shock can be turned against its makers when analysed thoughtfully. Our guest this episode, Dr. Aaron Tugendhaft, argues in his latest book "The Idols of ISIS: From Assyria to the Internet" that iconoclasm at heart is a political manifesto a matter understood by Abbasid philosopher Abū Naṣr al-Farābī (d.951CE). Dr. Tugendhaft received his PhD from the Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University in 2012 and also holds degrees in Art History and Social Thought from the University of Chicago. In 2013, he received the Jonas Greenfield Prize for Younger Semitists from the American Oriental Society. He currently teaches at Bard College Berlin. Timestamps 00.00 Introduction 02.40 Abū Naṣr al-Farābī (ca. 870–950) thought deeply about the relation between images and politics. He adapted the insights of ancient political philosophers—especially Plato and Aristotle—to make sense of prophetic religion. How do his political treatises shed light on Abraham's iconoclasm that ISIS claimed to uphold? 06.30 Where ISIS spoke of the need to cleanse the world of idols, their critics refer to a moral and legal imperative to protect cultural heritage. How do we see Al-Farābī's thesis play out in our contemporary context? 10.20 You also mention in your book how once archaeologists commonly removed so-called late levels—that is, medieval and modern Islamic remains—without recording them to get to the ancient layers underneath eliding the Islamic Middle East as though only the West beholds antiquity’s beauty today. What is called the "secular" can also have their idols, right? 13.30 Your book ends creatively employing al-Farābī's thoughts on images and politics in the age of video games. How would the philosopher have advised Trump? 22.55 Your book "The Idols of ISIS: From Assyria to the Internet" is published by University of Chicago Press. “The legacy of our civilization is a state based on a hierarchical system of control and specialization of labor, which leads to all of the modern problems we have. To create a different kind of society, that's free, where people have liberty and natural wealth, the emerging field of cryptography offers us power." -Amir Taaki With markets around the world plunging into a downward spiral, now is a great time to revisit the original reasons why people started working on Bitcoin. Amir Taaki was one of Bitcoin’s first-ever dedicated developers and perhaps the one most infamously focused on maintaining privacy and freedom from authority. In 2014, Taaki created Dark Wallet, the first privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet to include a CoinJoin mixer. That same year, he received even more notoriety as Dark Wallet was twice named in the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) report on the potential money-laundering and terrorist-financing risks posed by cryptocurrencies. In this episode, Dave Hollerith talks with Taaki, who after years spent working with the Syrian Democratic Forces fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and helping build their society, is now contributing to multiple cryptocurrency and privacy projects not yet revealed to the public. Taaki takes a critical, perhaps unwarranted, view on the Bitcoin movement of today, but he also has a valuable perspective on many of the topics covered. Topics: What Bitcoiners can learn from the Free Software movement How Bitcoin has changed between 2014 and today, and why Taaki believes the ecosystem needs to create a new narrative. The pros and cons of American startup culture on Bitcoin's development How Taaki' opposing views of Bitcoin led to conflict with Gavin Andresen, and later the creation of the BIP system. How Taaki believes the Bitcoin of today is not radical enough The limits of mesh networks at a large scale Why Bitcoin needs a stronger narrative to defend against co-option by larger corporate and state entities. What Bitcoiners can learn from Taaki's experience helping build an autonomous free society in Syria The narrative the Bitcoin ecosystem needs to adopt according to Taaki Nym, the Barcelona hacker academy and Taaki's other unpublicized projects The similarities and limits of comparing Bitcoin to religion. Pemerintah tengah mempertimbangkan untuk memulangkan WNI yang terlibat dengan kelompok teroris Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ke Tanah Air. Alasan kemanusiaan menjadi pertimbangan. Saat ini diperkirakan sekitar 600 WNI eks pengikut ISIS terlantar di kamp-kamp pengungsian di Suriah dan negara lain. Mereka terdiri atas perempuan dan anak-anak. Sebagian lagi ditahan di berbagai penjara oleh otoritas setempat. Wacana pemulangan mereka sontak menjadi perdebatan. Selain status kewarganegaraan mereka yang dipertanyakan, kepulangan mereka dikhawatirkan mendatangkan ancaman. Sementara progam deradikalisasi pemerintah diragukan mampu menyadarkan mereka. Lantas, perlukah WNI eks ISIS dipulangkan ke Tanah Air? Adakah program deradikalisasi yang mampu membuat mereka kembali menjadi warga negara yang baik?

Washington has been hit with a trifecta of catastrophic events in the past week. First, President Donald Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, justifying his decision by pointing toward Comey’s mishandling of the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails. Trump later changed course, admitting he fired Comey for continuing the investigation about Russia’s role in disrupting the 2016 election. Just days later, news broke that Trump shared classified information about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) with Russian diplomats in the Oval Office — a decision defended by Trump and Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, Trump’s national security advisor. Now, Comey has returned to the spotlight following media reports that he wrote a memo about a conversation in which Trump told him to end the Michael Flynn investigation. (Flynn was forced to resign his role as national security advisor after just 24 days, due to his secret communications with the Russians.) How have the dramatic events of this week changed Washington? What’s next in the ongoing saga of the Trump presidency? Is an investigation or impeachment possible? Professors Julian Zelizer and Sam Wang discuss this and more in episode #44 of Politics and Polls.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) suffered a steady stream of setbacks in 2016, to include territorial and leadership losses and a decrease in propaganda output. Director of Intelligence Rosemary Martorana and Intelligence Analyst Angie Gad sit down to address what these losses mean for the group and what 2017 could possibly look like for ISIS.
A daily devotional through the recorded words Jesus spoke while He walked alongside us. Our website http://alittlewalkwithgod.com. * In Luke 21:20-28, Jesus said, "Here's how you will know that the destruction of Jerusalem and her temple is imminent: Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies. When that happens, there's only one thing to do: if you're in Judea, flee to the mountains; and if you're inside the city, escape; and if you're outside the city, stay there—don't enter— because the time has come for the promised judgment to fall. How sad it will be for all the pregnant women, for all the nursing mothers in those days! All the land of Israel and all her people will feel the distress, the anger, falling on them like rain. The sword will cut some down, the outsider nations will take others captive, and this holy city, this Jerusalem, will be trampled upon by the outsiders until their times are fulfilled. * There will be earth-shattering events—the heavens themselves will seem to be shaken with signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars. And across the earth the outsider nations will feel powerless and terrified in the face of a roaring flood of fear and foreboding, crashing like tidal waves upon them. “What's happening to the world?” people will wonder. The cosmic order will be destabilized. And then, at that point, they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and blazing glory. So when the troubles begin, don't be afraid. Look up—raise your head high, because the truth is that your liberation is fast approaching. * Devotional * Jesus could see what would happen to Jerusalem forty years away. * Roman siege * destruction of temple * killing of innocents * Jerusalem destroyed * Gives warning to His disciples to avoid the city to save their lives * Gives warning about the end of times, too * Son of Man returning in a cloud with power and blazing glory * heavens shaken * signs in celestial bodies * overwhelming sense of fear and foreboding * Signs point to the end of time * Liberation is coming fast * Don't be afraid * Hold heads high * Victory is near * Look around * signs are everywhere * fear and foreboding seem to cloud the thinking of the whole world * Syria * ISIS * terrorists * US election * Son of Man's return is on the horizon * Hold your head up, don't be afraid, He's coming soon

The terrorist then jumped out of his vehicle and began stabbing people. A police officer shot and killed the radical Islamic terrorist, but not before he had injured nine innocent Americans. From The Hill: The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for Mondayâ??s attack at Ohio State University that injured nine. The terror groupâ??s Amaq News Agency on Tuesday claimed the attack, carried out by an 18-year-old Ohio State student Abdul Razak Ali Artan, was perpetrated by a â??soldier of the Islamic State.â??
Beginning in March 2015, pro-ISIS hacking groups have been releasing "kill lists" on social media messaging apps, primarily Telegram. They are relatively unsophisticated, employ common and low-level hacking techniques, and act independently with no association or direction from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). To date, they have released 23 "kill lists" that included US persons. Listen to Episode 33 of Intelligence. Unclassified. as Intelligence Analyst Angie Gad is joined by an NJOHSP detective to explore these lists and the role of law enforcement in warning US citizens.
Tune-in to Episode 32 of Intelligence. Unclassified. as Intelligence Analysts Alyssa Potter and Angie Gad cover the recent propaganda produced by Al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), particularly in their respective magazines: Inspire and Dabiq.
Homegrown Violent Extremists (HVEs) are individuals inspired by foreign terrorist organizations and radicalized in the countries in which they are born, raised, or reside. In 2015, HVEs demonstrated an ability to operate in New Jersey and throughout the United States while connecting with like-minded individuals online and acting independently from organized terrorist groups. Since late 2014, a variety of radical groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have encouraged HVEs to attack in their home countries. This week’s episode of Intelligence. Unclassified. brings in both NJOHSP Director of Intelligence Rosemary Martorana and Analysis Bureau Chief Dean Baratta to further expand upon the details surrounding this pheonmenon.
Since the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) announced the creation of their self-proclaimed Caliphate in June of 2014, they have been in open competition with al-Qa'ida for leadership within the global jihadi Salafist movement. This competition has taken place on the Internet, the battlefield, and in cities around the world as both groups grapple for legitimacy. This week's podcast revisits NJOHSP's latest webinar discussing the various forms the competition takes across the globe and what the implications may be for the United States.

With the recent decision by the Obama administration to begin launching airstrikes against Islamist militants in Iraq and Syria, questions have arisen about the nature of the terrorist threat groups like the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Al Qaeda pose to the United States and whether our current strategies to eradicate terrorism are actually working. Many are concerned that just as we thought we were finally coming to the end of over a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, we are being sucked into yet another long, bloody conflict in a region where our success rate has been anything but stellar, and all to address what amounts to a fairly minor threat. Others have argued that the threat of ISIS is an existential one for the United States and its allies and interests in the region and therefore believe that nothing short of a full military intervention coupled with long-term state-building projects in Iraq and Syria will suffice to eliminate the threat of ISIS once and for all. Recent reports about the so-called Khorasan Group, a mysterious faction of Al Qaeda operatives with links to the core organization in Pakistan and its affiliate in Yemen that is supposedly recruiting Westerners in Syria to carry out attacks against the United States and other Western countries have sharpened the debate—is Al Qaeda really “on the run,” as we’ve so often been told? Do they still pose a threat to the U.S. homeland? And if so, what exactly have we been doing the past 13 years? Where did all that money and manpower we threw at counterterrorism after 9/11 go? Will the war on terrorism ever really be won? For this week’s Lawfare Podcast, I sat down with preeminent terrorism scholar Audrey Kurth Cronin to dig into these issues a little more deeply. Audrey recently wrote a fantastic piece titled “Is this How to Win the War on Terrorism?” for the Foreign Policy Essay here at Lawfare, in which she discussed the Obama administration’s use of drones as its primary counterterrorism tactic, the bloated counterterrorism bureaucracy that has emerged since 9/11, and how best to combat terrorist threats from groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda.
The militant organization called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is grabbing front-page headlines and disrupting the global landscape. Learn why ISIS calls itself a caliphate; the source of their wealth and power; and whether their goal of a pan-Islamic state is achievable. What can the global community do to prevent ISIS from gaining more power?
Co-Host Ron March will discuss ISIS The Islamic State (IS) the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL ...the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS is a Sunni jihadist group in the Middle East. it claims religious authority over all Muslims across the world and aspires to bring most of the Muslim-inhabited regions of the world under its political control beginning with Iraq.
The Jihadist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), alternatively known as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has enjoyed spectacular successes overthrowing and controlling territory from northern Syria to the outskirts of Baghdad in Iraq. Previously referred to as Al Qaeda in the Islamic State of Iraq (AQI), the group got its name in April of 2013. For a group estimated to be composed of merely a few thousand militants, the organization has secured astonishing victories over much larger armed forces. [2] The group's first major military success was the conquest of Raqqa in Northern Syria in March of 2013. Since that victory, ISIS has successfully gained control of the Iraqi cities of Tal Afar, Tikrit, Suleiman Beg, and Fallujah. [3] Perhaps their most impressive and shocking achievement to date, and the one that galvanized the attention of the world back to Iraq, was the conquest of Iraq's second most populous city, Mosul. ISIS managed to not only secure this crucial trading post proximate to Syria, but they managed to get hold of weaponry and equipment abandoned when the Iraq security forces fled the city. [4] How is it possible such a relatively small group of rebels could manage to outmaneuver a force presence of 30,000? Michel Chossudovsky of the Centre for Research on Globalization has been tracking these developments. He contends that the rise of ISIS is not a miscalculation on the part of the US-NATO alliance, but is in fact a deliberate strategy to re-engineer the region to advance their imperial aims there. He explains his thesis in part one of the Global Research News Hour. The recent elections in Syria have been described as “meaningless” and “a great big zero” by the US Secretary of State John Kerry. He argues given the state of conflict in the Middle Eastern country that “you can't have an election where millions of your people don't even have an ability to vote.” [5] The final vote posted by the Speaker of the People's Assembly announced that the incumbent President secured a land-slide victory of over 88% with a 73.42% voter turn-out. [6] While a dictatorial power in a time of civil war might have the capacity to gerrymander election results to his satisfaction, is there any indication that this is in fact what happened? Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya is a Research Associate with the Centre for Research on Globalization and a published author. He served as an election observer during the recent Syrian elections and discloses in the second half hour of the Global Research News Hour why he believes the elections were above board, and what role these elections, particularly the perception of them being fraudulent, serves in the broader geo-political context.
