Skin issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea are deeply connected to internal imbalances, especially those originating in the gut. It is important to explore diet—particularly sugar, refined carbs, and dairy—because it can drive inflammation, insulin resistance, and hormonal disruption, all of which contribute to poor skin health. Topical treatments and antibiotics may provide short-term relief, but they often disrupt the skin and gut microbiome, worsening conditions over time. A Functional Medicine approach focuses on restoring gut balance, identifying food sensitivities, and supporting detoxification pathways with nutrient-dense foods, supplements, and lifestyle practices. Addressing the root causes not only improves skin but also promotes systemic healing and resilience. In this episode, I speak with three of our doctors at The UltraWellness Center—Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Dr. Cindy Geyer, and Dr. Todd LePine—about why, when it comes to skin care, we need to look inside the body first. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women's Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her bachelor of science and her doctor of medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine and lifestyle medicine. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine's focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. This week I welcomed Todd LePine, MD to my show to talk about the critical role of mitochondria, the cell's powerhouse, impacting virtually all bodily functions from movement to brain activity. Beginning with an overview of what mitochondria is and its importance, Dr. LePine looks ahead to share the potential of mitochondrial medicine in shaping the landscape of future healthcare. Dr. Lepine, a veteran in functional and integrative medicine, shares the surprising story that led him to his medical practice (that includes the famous Norman Rockwell painting, “Before the Shot”). Our conversation spans the importance of lifestyle choices, dietary habits, stress management, and environmental factors on mitochondrial health. We discuss strategies like intermittent fasting, high-intensity interval training, and exposure to natural light as opportunities to enhance mitochondrial function. Dr. LePine also shares an overview of things to avoid to preserve mitochondrial integrity and underscores the importance of connecting with nature for overall well-being. Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. Additionally, he has advanced clinical training through the Institute for Functional Medicine and is a certified Functional Medicine physician. The focus of his practice is to help patients achieve optimal health by restoring balance to nutritional biochemistry in the body and to teach patients how to adopt healthy lifestyle habits. Tune as we discuss the profound interconnectedness between mitochondrial health and our broader quality of life, including encouragement to build a strong community, find a movement practice you enjoy, and spend more time in nature. 00:00 The Power of Mitochondria: An Introduction 00:24 A Journey into Functional Medicine with Dr. Todd LePine 07:20 The Evolution and Importance of Mitochondria 12:31 Mitochondrial Health: From Diet to Biohacking 23:21 Revitalizing Your Mitochondria: Practical Tips and Techniques 27:37 Exploring Red Light Therapy and Its Benefits 28:28 The Power of Polyphenols in Your Diet 29:40 Supplements for Mitochondrial Support: From Urolithin A to PQQ 32:16 Mitochondrial Testing: Understanding Your Body's Powerhouses 36:35 Environmental and Lifestyle Factors Affecting Mitochondria 38:29 Stress Management and Its Impact on Mitochondrial Health 44:47 Practical Tips for Enhancing Mitochondrial Health 44:59 Expanding Social Networks for Better Health 51:16 Concluding Thoughts on Mitochondrial Health and Wellness Connect with Amy Myers, MD Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dramymyers YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AmyMyersMD/featured Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Twitter: https://twitter.com/AmyMyersMD Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Todd LePine Website: https://www.drlepine.com/

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Sensate, and Super Simple Protein. Epigenetics is the study of how our environment and behavior can influence which of our genes are turned on or off. That's right—we're born with many different genes, but that does not mean they are all active. Genes can be activated or silenced from so many different things, like what you eat, how you move, and how you restore your system. Your thoughts, feelings, and social connections even regulate your genes too. You can turn on genes that create health or disease or weight gain or weight loss.In today's episode, I talk with Drs. Jeff Bland, Bruce Lipton, and Todd LePine about how environmental and lifestyle factors are significant determining factors of your health.Dr. Jeff Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature's greatest innovations—the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Jeff is advocating for the power of immuno-rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level, often through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. Jeff's career in health spans more than 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. Jeff then spent three decades in the natural products industry, working alongside other pioneers.Dr. Bruce Lipton is a stem cell biologist and author of the bestselling books The Biology of Belief, Spontaneous Evolution, and The Honeymoon Effect. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and InsideTracker. The most profound cases of healing are in people who refuse to give up. Even if they've found some things that improve their condition, they continue searching for new ways to feel better and better. This is how we break down walls in medicine. The Functional Medicine methodology is the same; there is no end to searching for what is underneath the symptoms. Functional Medicine healing protocols can ultimately help change the prognosis of so many conditions, including the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Terry Wahls and Dr. Todd LePine about using diet, meditation, and much more to reverse devastating autoimmune disease symptoms. Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. Her secondary progressive multiple sclerosis confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years, but she restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for mitochondrial health and now pedals her bike to work each day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook, The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Athletic Greens. Our gut is a powerful control center, due to its bidirectional communication with the brain, which we call the gut-brain axis. This links the emotional and cognitive centers of the brain with intestinal function. Certain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), are tied to imbalances in the gut-brain axis and can benefit from taking a systems approach in healing, which includes looking at diet, the microbiome, stress management, and more. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. Emeran Mayer, and Dr. George Papanicolaou about various root causes of irritable bowel syndrome, including microbiome imbalance, parasites, and stress. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens and InsideTracker. This myth is pervasive throughout medicine: if you know the name of your disease, you know what's wrong with you. In truth, diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They tell us nothing about why someone has those symptoms—the root causes of the “disease.” Functional Medicine seeks to dig deeper to look for the root cause of symptoms. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Dr. Todd LePine, and Dr. George Papanicolaou about how patients miss out on true healing when the root cause of their symptoms is not addressed. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. He calls his philosophy “Whole Life Wellness.” Over time, as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. While inflammation is a natural part of life that can serve a beneficial role, we start to see disease when inflammatory pathways are constantly activated. That's why many brain symptoms—like brain fog, anxiety, memory loss, and more—can actually be caused by systemic inflammation. The foods we eat, the toxins we're exposed to, our stress levels, and our genetics are just some of the many aspects that can impact the body—and the brain's—propensity towards inflammation. In this episode, I discuss inflammation in the brain with Dr. Todd LePine. We dive into the many factors that can drive neuroinflammation, the range of conditions that are linked to brain inflammation, and how we work with patients to cool this inflammation. I also talk with Max Lugavere about how nutritional deficiencies affect the brain.Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine, and is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. He has been practicing Functional Medicine for over 15 years focusing on Optimal Aging, Bio-Detoxification, Gastrointestinal Health, Systemic Inflammation, Autoimmune disorders and the Neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.Max Lugavere is a filmmaker, health, and science journalist and the author of the New York Times bestselling book Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life. He is also the host of the #1 iTunes health podcast The Genius Life. Deb Matthew MD, America's Happy Hormones Doctor, wears many hats as a best-selling author, international speaker, private practice doctor, wife, and mom of 4 boys. She helps her patients restore their health by addressing the root cause of their symptoms (including hormone imbalances!) instead of just treating diseases with drugs. After suffering for years with exhaustion and irritability that prevented her from being the wife and mom that she wanted to be, she refocused her medical career to help others get their hormones back in balance. Dr. Deb combined her background in medicine with her interest in fitness and nutrition to create a complete medical wellness approach using scientifically-based treatments to help her patients restore their energy, libido, mood, and memory, as well as lose weight and discontinue many of their prescription medications. As a leader in this field of medicine, Dr. Matthew has proven her level of knowledge repeatedly. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM), and the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM). In her role as an oral board examiner for the ABAARM, she tests other doctors to see if they have the knowledge to become certified as a specialist in this area. She has presented lectures about hormone therapy to forward thinking medical doctors across the US, and around the world in places like Bangkok, Bali, and Dubai, and has had the honor to speak at Harvard where she shared the stage with Suzanne Somers. As President of the North Carolina Integrative Medicine Society, she helps support Integrative/Functional Medicine practitioners in the community and has a goal of shifting the standard of care in medicine towards creating wellness.

Because some people don't even understand that they're not eating real food. 90% of the stuff in the supermarkets today. It's all sad. It's really like, all of the junk food that we see in the boxes and cans and in the shelves, artificial colors, and flavors and all of this stuff. It's not real food. It's really something resemble food. So, I recommend for people to go and eat real food. Because let your food be thy medicine and your medicine be thy food Dr Grant To tell you the truth, when I put this post on my website, I recommend it take between 8000 to 10,000, vitamin D3, between 3000 to 5000, vitamin C milligrams, and 80 milligrams of zinc every single day. I did not have any publications to justify that. It was based on 40 plus years of experience. But guess what Dr. Manon last month, there was 4800 publications in reference medical journals to show what I recommended two years ago was absolutely valid development, vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc to boost the immune system Dr Grant I'm sorry, this is not the biggest pandemic we're living in the biggest pandemic we're living in is diabetes, obesity, I call it dieobesity. It's hypertension that people are taking drugs for the rest of their lives. And heart problems, which is the number one leading cause of death. And these are the biggest pandemic here our lifestyle has to change. Because we eat the standard American diet sad, SAD, or the standard Canadian diet SCT. Those are the diets that cause problems. However, keeping our internal “clock” in rhythm is a vital component of our health and well-being. If you’ve ever experienced jet lag or pulled an all-nighter, you know just how off you can feel. When your biological and circadian rhythms become unbalanced, so does your health, and you feel it.In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about the importance of keeping our circadian rhythm in sync. They also discuss how they work with patients to restore the body’s natural rhythm.Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing | This episode is sponsored by Sound and TushyConventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms—with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. Leigh Erin Connealy, M.D. is a prominent leader in the Integrative & Functional Medicine medical field (taking the best of all sciences, including conventional, homeopathic, eastern medicine, and the new modern medicine). She is the Medical Director of two amazing clinics “The Cancer Center For Healing” & “Center For New Medicine”. The combined (30,000 S.F.) clinics have become the largest Integrative Medical Clinic in North America and visited by patients from all over the world with 47,000 patients and growing. The Center For New Medicine focuses on a precise personalized approach to health care that includes prevention, early detection of cancer, and internal medicine; along with, yearly physicals, auto-immune disease, natural hormone replacement, chronic issues, and everyone's favorite Aesthetics. Dr. Connealy feels we must treat “the whole person”, the patient with the disease, and not the disease of the patient while determining the “origin of the illness”. Dr. Connealy created the Cancer Center For Healing because of the epidemic spreading of Cancer. Patients receive scientifically based treatments and receive integrative protocols. She has created an acute awareness for the need to focus on cancer prevention, providing unique testing to determine the early stages of cancer, years before a scan reveals, or is recognized. Through sophisticated cancer testing, Biofield or Bio-Energetic testing, including RGCC testing, and comprehensive blood panels, she, and her skilled team, create personalized treatment plans for early to late-stage cancer patients. She has discovered that many factors contribute to the disease process; therefore, many modalities must be used to reverse it and spending the proper time with each patient to allow for the reversal of the disease. Dr. Connealy and her team of practitioners, make this happen each day at her multi-disciplined “state of the art” clinic while providing quality of life treatments. Some of our treatments and services may be billable to major PPO Plans. Dr. Connealy is the author of two books, “The Cancer Revolution” published in 2017, and before that the “Be Perfectly Healthy” book in 2009 and has revolutionized the landscape of medicine. A Functional Medicine Approach to Osteoporosis | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Dr. Hyman’s Sleep Master Class We have been led to believe that drinking milk is the key to bone health. Unfortunately, the prevailing myth that drinking milk as children builds up a calcium bank that helps us avoid osteoporosis and fracture later in life is simply not true. Our bone health is determined by a number of things including what we eat, our stress and activity levels, our muscle mass, and other factors that contribute to the delicate balance between bone build-up and bone breakdown. Unfortunately, osteoporosis is a very common and life-threatening problem, it is also highly underdiagnosed. This is part of the reason why prevention is so important when it comes to osteoporosis. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to osteoporosis. They get into how chronic inflammation acts as one of the main drivers of osteoporosis, why both bone density and quality are so important, and much more.Dr. Our Guest: Dr. Tracy Chandler BSc(HONS); MBChB; FRNZCGP; FNZSCM, PGDipSEM, Cert Dermoscopy, Cert Homeopathy, FACNEM, ACNEM, Fellowship Examiner, AIMA Member. Tracy was born in Canada and grew up and trained in England. She is married to her soulmate Grant and they have seven children. Tracy completed a Biochemistry degree and then her primary medical training in England. This gave her a more in-depth knowledge of the human body than most Doctors are required to know. She then worked as a GP before doing further post-graduate training in Sports and Integrative (Wellness) Medicine and Nutrition. Her decision to specialise in Integrative Medicine partly evolved through her increasing awareness of the impact of nutrition and environment on her own personal and her patients health and well-being. Whilst working and raising her family she became unwell and experienced the frustration of conventional medicine not being able to provide a solution for her healing. It was then she discovered the power of Integrative (Functional) Medicine. This combines the best of conventional and complementary medicine and biochemistry to treat the root cause of poor health. With her own health experience and being a (recovering) ‘perfectionist' Tracy takes your health very personally! How Does Your Body Make Energy? | This episode is brought to you by Perfect KetoIf you think back to your early years of biology class, chances are you might recall learning about mitochondria, which are often equated to little energy factories. Mitochondria are the microscopic powerhouses hiding within most cells and they have huge consequences for our health. Damaged mitochondria can lead to a host of insults, including metabolic disease. Healthy mitochondria, on the other hand, can result in optimal aging.Dr. Hyman discussed the topic of mitochondria, and how we can best support them in recent conversations with Dave Asprey and Dr. Todd LePine. Dave Asprey is the founder and CEO of Bulletproof 360, creator of the global phenomenon Bulletproof Coffee, a two-time New York Times bestselling author, the host of the Webby award-winning podcast Bulletproof Radio, serial entrepreneur, and global change agent. By employing the principles of biohacking (a term added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in September of 2018 with Dave’s influence) Dave has lost over 100 pounds, upgraded his brain, learned to sleep more efficiently in less time, and become a more effective entrepreneur, husband, father, and overall human being. In this episode, he shares his top tips and tricks for being superhuman and living to be 180 or beyond. Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases often go undiagnosed or are misdiagnosed. This is partially because Lyme mimics other illnesses such as the flu, manifesting as diverse symptoms including headaches, muscle aches, stomach ulcers, constipation, and joint pain, making diagnosing and treating Lyme very difficult. Left unchecked, Lyme symptoms can worsen, creating a long-running inflammatory response and autoimmune illness. Lyme disease, or borreliosis, is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which can proliferate to every area in your body. The good news is that with some work and effort, you can successfully treat Lyme disease. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to identifying and treating chronic Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. We're back with a highly important interview all about the Cancer Revolution with Dr. Connealy. Leigh Erin Connealy, M.D. is a prominent leader in the Integrative/Functional Medicine medical field (taking the bestof all sciences, including Homeopathic and Conventional treatments). She is the Medical Director of two amazing clinics: “The Cancer Center For Healing” and “Center For New Medicine”. The combined (30,000 S.F.) clinics have become the largest Integrative Medical Clinic in North America, and visited by patients from all over the world with 47,000 patients and growing. The Center For New Medicine focuses on prevention and internal medicine along with, yearly physicals, auto-immune disease, natural hormone replacement, chronic issues and everyone’s favorite Aesthetics. Dr. Connealy feels we must treat “the Whole person”, the patient with the disease and not the disease of the patient, while determining the “origin of the illness”. Dr. Connealy is the author of two books, “The Cancer Revolution” published in 2017, and prior to that the “Be Perfectly Healthy” book in 2009, and has revolutionized the landscape of medicine. In 2017, she was named one of the top 50 functional integrative doctors in the country. Dr. Connealy has over 30 years of experience and has taken numerous advanced courses, including homeopathic, nutritional and lifestyle approaches, while studying disease, chronic illness, and Alternative or Integrative/Functional Medicine cancer treatments. Needless to say, mark this one as an absolute "can't-miss" episode and tune in as Dr. Connealy shares about how the US is the world leader of chronic disease and yet the power we have to fight back against disease, namely cancer. "The key to any illness is prevention," Dr. Connealy says. "From one cancer cell to tumor is about 10 years. So that means we have 8-9 years of opportunity to prevent it; to detect it." Dr. Connealy also discusses the role of Vitamin D, and the rise of cancer amongst the 25-35 year old population in America due to lifestyle factors that can be changed. Want to lean more?
