On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Rick Monroe has some brand new music and some awesome news he's here to share with everyone. Rick announces that Motor City Madman Ted Nugent is bringing Rick on tour with him, who he says has been a treat to work with and it has been a surreal experience to work with not only him, but his entire crew too. Rick touches on some of the controversies around the Motor City Madman, saying he's a good man with a great family and that what you read is just clickbait tabloids looking for some clicks. The guys then talk about how some musicians are so linear when it comes to their music taste. Rick says that if you close yourself off and stick to what you know, you're going to miss a lot in the world. Rick reveals to us that they have a lot of new material coming out in the near future, which includes an entire record which they've been putting songs out from every 6 to 8 weeks. As spring turned to summer in 1920 and This Side of Paradise was making a celebrity of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the periodical published by his very own publisher, Scribner's Magazine, featured an atypical story by him: "The Four Fists," whose premise is---no, seriously---that we would all be better off if in moments of moral impurity we took a knuckle sandwich to the chiclets. Four times in this odd tale the hero, Samuel Meredith, gets punched in the face, and four times he becomes a better person for it. Although it sounds like it might make for a better title for a 1973 Bruce Lee movie, "The Four Fists" is one of Fitzgerald's most infamous stories: it's universally derided as moralistic and didactic, as proof that when the author aimed for the creakiest, stuffiest magazine audiences of the era---and Scribner's was actually more conservative in taste in 1920 than even the Saturday Evening Post---he ended up betraying all the beautiful nuances and poignancies for which we value his writing. Does that mean somebody should have socked him in the jaw for publishing this story (which only made him $150, anyway)? As we suggest, two explanations suggest why "The Four Fists" has gone down in literary history as one of Fitzgerald's worst : 1) for reasons that remain unclear, he chose to include it as the final story in Flappers and Philosophers, his first story collection, giving it a spotlight it might not otherwise have had had he just let in sink in the pages of Scribner's June 1920 issue; and 2) the then president of Princeton, John Grier Hibben, wrote Fitzgerald a notorious letter praising this tale and wishing Fitzgerald would follow this preachy path rather than revel in the jazz debauchery of This Side of Paradise---a condescending bit of career advice that sparked a feisty reply from the twenty-three-year-old voice of "the rising generation."

Scott Fitzgerald, (born Sept. 24, 1896, St. Paul, Minn., U.S.—died Dec. 21, 1940, Hollywood, Calif.) was a U.S. novelist and short-story writer. Fitzgerald attended Princeton University but dropped out with bad grades. In 1920 he married Zelda Sayre (1900–48), daughter of a respected Alabama judge. His works, including the early novels This Side of Paradise (1920) and The Beautiful and Damned (1922) and the story collections Tales of the Jazz Age (1922) and All the Sad Young Men (1926), capture the Jazz Age's vulgarity and dazzling promise. His brilliant The Great Gatsby (1925; film, 1926, 1949, 1974; TV movie 2001), a story of American wealth and corruption, was eventually acclaimed one of the century's greatest novels. In 1924 Scott and Zelda became part of the expatriate community on the French Riviera, the setting of Tender Is the Night (1934; film, 1962). His fame and prosperity proved disorienting to them both, and he became seriously alcoholic. Zelda never fully recovered from a mental breakdown in 1932 and spent most of her remaining years in a sanitarium. In 1937 Scott moved to Hollywood to write film scripts; the experience inspired the unfinished The Last Tycoon (1941; film, 1976). He died of a heart attack at age 44.From https://www.britannica.com/summary/F-Scott-Fitzgerald. For more information about F. Q. What does this episode of RetroTube have in common with the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix?A. Start Wreck. Now I've got that off my chest, it's time for long-term non-Trekker Adam to be introduced to two episodes of Star Trek by Heather, the world's biggest Leonard McCoy fangirl, ho boy, and how, yes indeed. And you'll be pleased to know that a) at no point do they mention the words, "Beam me up, Scotty", and b), you won't hear a single note of *that song*. You know the one I mean. We're a classy podcast. This is part one of two - they got a little bit overexcited and talked for two and a half hours. Balance of Terror is discussed in this episode, This Side of Paradise in the next. So, wearing the purple uniform of the Starfleet podcasting division, Adam and Heather buckle up and knuckle down to some serious Trekkery. Will Adam enjoy his taste of Kirk and the gang, or will he not give a TOS?Please like, rate, review and share the podcast, otherwise it's the pink smoke for you.https://twitter.com/retro_tubehttps://shows.acast.com/retrotubeemail: retrotubepodcast@gmail.comTheme Music by Adam S. Leslie, aka Berlin Horse.Note: in their discussion about female characters with feminine-sounding surnames (Ensign Martine, President Roslin), our RetroTube pals forgot about the most blindly obvious example of all - Star Trek's very own Captain Janeway. AS A MEMBER OF THE LOCAL BAND FLYTE TYME, HIS KEYBOARDS PROVIDED A DRAMATIC BACKDROP FOR SUCH MINNEAPOLIS SUPERSTARS AS ALEXANDER O'NEAL AND CYNTHIA JOHNSON, THE DIVA VOICE WHO LOFTED LIPPS INC TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS WITH “FUNKYTOWN” IN 1980. HIS TRACK RECORD AS A COMPOSER AND PRODUCER INCLUDES “THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE”, ONE OF JANET JACKSON'S BREAKTHROUGH HITS FROM “CONTROL” IN 1986. Moir remains one of the core members of the Time, the band who played comedic and funky foils to Prince in “Purple Rain”, and the group now elevated to cult hero status in the new film, “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”. While still in college, Moir began playing with the outfit, which was retooled by Prince into the group fronted by Morris Day and featured another set of musical legends-in-the-making, bassist Terry Lewis and keyboard player Jimmy Jam. After releasing tow stellar records (their self-titled first album and What Time Is It?) and barnstorming the country as the opening act for Prince, they hit their commercial stride with “Ice Cream Castle”, the album which featured both of their Purple Rain singles, “Jungle Love” and “The Bird”. Even Prince was taken aback by the group's success. In 1986, he told a Detroit radio interviewer, “They were, to be perfectly honest, the only band I was afraid of. They were turning into, like, Godzilla.” Buoyed by their success, Jam and Lewis left the Time to concentrate on producing, guitarist Jesse Johnson and front man Morris Day also enjoyed solo success, and Moir struck out on his own as well. He became the man behind the scenes of such records as “If You Were Here Tonight” by Alexander O' Neal and Deniece Williams' Dove Award nominated CD, “From the Beginning”, which featured Moir's “All I need”. In the years since, Moir has divided his schedule between roadwork with The Time (a reunion album in 1990 called Pandemonium yielded another hit single in “Jerk Out”) and writing and production work with some of the most stellar names in R&B. To date, Moir has collaborated with Gladys Knight and the Pips, Junior, Thelma Houston, Deja, Mica Paris, St. Paul, Ruby Turner, Cheryl Lynn, Force MDs and Patti Austin. He has received tow platinum and seven gold record awards for his work. Years of forging hits for others convinced Moir to step out on his own into the limelight, and “This Side of Paradise” brims with the promise of the memorable compositions which have gone before. “Here”, he says, “I'm able to take a musical idea from conception all the way through to completion and express myself in ways I sometimes can't when writing for others. Also, being able to step outside of the box that the music industry likes to place around people is empowering.” Songwriting remains first and foremost for him. “Songs, especially personal ones, are a reflection of thoughts and emotions a person feels about his or her condition at a particular time. The process of translating those thoughts and emotions into a musical from has always fascinated me,” he muses. ___________________________ Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Prince featured the "Upper Room with Joe Kelley and Gi Dussault" on his official website www.npgmusicclub.com. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode This Side of Paradise which aired on March 2, 1967, Star Date 3417.3. The Enterprise is ordered to a Federation colony on Omicron Ceti IIIto evacuate them from some deadly rays. Kalomi offers to show Spock how the colonists have survived, and exposes him to spores that protect humans from the rays. Kirk returns to the ship while the rest of its crew, under the influence of spore plants that have been brought on board, beam down to the planet. After exposure to the spores, Kirk too prepares to leave, but he is seized by frustration at his own abandonment of the ship. The effect of the spores disappears, and Kirk surmises that violent emotions destroy them. Kirk lures Spock back aboard Enterprise and uses derogatory racial remarks to goad him into attacking. Kirk and Spock induce a similar effect on the planet below by broadcasting an irritating subsonic frequency to the crew's communicators, provoking fights among the colonists and crew. As they leave orbit with the colonists aboard, Kirk asks Spock about his experiences on the planet. Spock replies, "I have little to say about it, Captain, except that for the first time in my life ... I was happy." Compliance Takeaways: 1. What are the unknown talents of your staff? 2. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day!. That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik Korem See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol-free life! My guest today is Peggi Cooney. She's a retired social worker with 16 years of field experience and these days she trains other social workers to cope with the many challenges of their work. She has written a personal memoir about her own struggles with alcohol a has become a sobriety advocate. One of the things that shines out from that book is her love and appreciation of the Recovery Community and the support we all give each other. She leads a community group on Facebook also called This Side of Alcohol structured to encourage daily conversation, insight, and support around alcohol recovery. In this episode Like many of us Peggi used various tricks to disguise the fact that she was drinking too much. She talks of an award ceremony where she pre-drank and after-drank but at the event people saw her with just one glass of wine. Of course she used “the rules” – trying to drink moderately or only at the weekend - and of course she failed to keep to her own rules. At one point Peggi was hiding wine bottles in her boots in her wardrobe – she really struggled to recognise herself in those moments… She had lots of stomach problems and always felt below par when she was drinking – its only now that she feels SO much better that she has joined up the dots and realised that her alcohol consumption was responsible for that feeling. Peggi had a “rock bottom” on the day that she was arguing with her husband about her drinking – and her children and grandchildren walked in on them having a furious argument. After that event she realised that she was “done” drinking. Once she had made up her mind to stop she “threw the book at it” – she read all the quitlit and joined Sober Sis to do their 21 day reset. She describes being in a small condo with lots of people when they were doing a lot of drinking including tequila shots – she had known it might turn out like that so she had booked a hotel room nearby and was able to slip out. That makes me think of one of our survival tips for socialising – always have an escape plan – what will you do if things get difficult – Peggis plan was a great one but if you are not too far from home you can just get in your car and drive. If the people you've left are busy drinking they may not even notice you've slipped out early! Peggi knew that she was not physically addicted – her addiction was psychological. If you have a listen to Tribe Sober podcast episode 48 you will hear Molly Watts explaining that only 10% of us are physically addicted to alcohol. It's still important to get medical advice if you are drinking more than 14 units a day but for many of us the “work” is around breaking deeply entrenched habits Although Peggi GOT sober as a result of an ultimatum from her husband and daughter she STAYED sober because of how good it made her feel - that reminds me of a story from Soberpunk Jon Turner on Tribe Sober episode 68 We agreed that Covid has been a gift for many drinkers in early sobriety as it had allowed them to opt out of socialising while they built up their sober strength. Yet for others who were already drinking too much and hadn't made any changes Covid had proved to be their nemesis – and resulted in a deeper level of dependence. Peggi and I are both “ladies of a certain age” as the French so elegantly put and we agreed that ditching the booze is absolutely the best thing you can do for your health and your happiness as you get older. Like me Peggi is enamoured by the recovery community and we both agreed that without the support of community its extremely hard to change our drinking habits. The great thing is that there are so many choices these days – there will be a sobriety group to suit everybody – whereas it used to be just AA. She talked about “the switch” when she went from thinking “I can never drink again” (which comes from a place of deprivation to “I can drink whenever I want but I just don't want to” which comes from a place of freedom. For me that the difference between willpower “I can never drink again” and mindset “I don't want to drink” Peggi feels as if she has got an extra third of her day back – the extra time is great. I think this is one of the benefits of sobriety we don't think about until it happens – when we are planning the drinking, doing the drinking and recovering from the drinking – that takes up a lot of time that we could be spending on more constructive things. She comes across many women who keep their drinking problem a secret but for her she knew she had to “live it out loud” – she knew she had to be accountable and “not leave any doors open Peggi talked about the deep connection that comes with the sober friendships we make in recovery and how much fun she had with a group of sober women she'd never met before She feels so much smarter now – as she puts it she can “figure shit out” rather than just have a drink and try not to think about it -ironic that we drink to cope with our stress but if we stayed sober we might actually stand a chance of dealing with the cause of our stress! Peggi has a very lively FB group which she has named after her book “This Side of Alcohol” and she spends some time of there every day engaging with the members. Like so many people that I've interviewed she is a great fan of William Porter and loved my conversation with him which you can find on episode 50 of the Tribe Sober podcast If you'd like copy of our PDF called “30 signs you may have a problem with alcohol” – just email janet@tribesober.com We're already getting sign ups for our Sober Spring Challenge which starts on 20th March 66 alcohol free days – supported by daily emails and 66 mini podcasts Its great fun as we put everyone on the Sober Spring Bus on Day one and they all travel through the 66 alcohol free days together – its always a great vibe on that bus as everyone encourages and supports each other – so don't miss the bus Sign up today – just go to tribesober.com and click on Sober Spring 2022 If you'd like copy of our PDF called “30 signs you may have a problem with alcohol” – just email janet@tribesober.com More info For an affordable monthly subscription you can join Tribe Sober - read about the benefits of membership and sign up HERE To access our website click HERE If you would like a free copy of our "Annual Tracker" or our e-book "66 Days to Sobriety" please email janet@tribesober.com If you would like to come to our Saturday afternoon Zoom Cafe as a guest and meet our community just email janet@tribesober.com Episode Sponsor This episode is sponsored by the Tribe Sober Membership Program. The Boyz watch Star Trek The Original Series episode "This Side of Paradise"
Just when you thought your stocking couldn't get any more stuffed this Christmas, we're slipping underneath your holly jolly to drop our second episode of season two. "Porcelain and Pink" appeared in the January 1920 issue of The Smart Set, one month before F. Scott Fitzgerald debuted in the Saturday Evening Post and two before the publication of This Side of Paradise. A charming trifle, "P&P" tells the story of a young flapper, Julie, luxuriating in a blue bathtub who teases a young literary beau by pretending to be her sister (the gentleman's girlfriend), Lois. Written as a one-act play, the slight (and we do mean slight) comedy reminds us that early in his career Fitzgerald was fond of cranking out fiction written in the form of a theater script. Our discussion takes us to the vaudeville halls where the story's tantalizing set-up (Julie is bathing au naturel, naturally) makes burlesque sense. Trying to find a theme here is like trying to snatch a floating bubble, but we do connect "Porcelain and Pink" to other, more significant stories from 1920 such as "Head and Shoulders" and "Bernice Bobs Her Hair." We also offer a history of the bathtub (!) and a long list of iconic bathing moments in art, music, and literature. Rub-a-dub-dub!

Episode 143 (10/06/21): Pain, difficulty, confusion, and chaos has a way of blinding us from the sobering reality that we are not entitled to anything in this life. When we struggle to see God's goodness in the midst of all that swirls in our head and heart, may we lean into the chaos seeking sober eyes. May we not miss our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer in the whirlwind of change.… Heavy heart, there is so much more than what our bloodshot eyes see in our limited understanding. We are entitled to nothing, yet we are loved as Royalty. Music referenced in this episode: Sam Ock, "This Side of Eternity" (From the album: To Belonging)

We're excited and honored to be joined for our deep dive on "Enterprise Incidents" by Ralph Senensky, who made his "Star Trek" directorial debut with the beloved landmark classic "This Side of Paradise." The Enterprise arrives at the planet Omicron Ceti III, which is being bombarded by deadly Berthold rays, expecting to find no signs of life from the colonists who previously settled there. But to Captain Kirk's surprise, everyone is alive and well -- and extremely healthy -- thanks to the euphoric effect of drug-like spores produced by an alien plant. After the colonists refuse orders to evacuate, the spores quickly spread to infect the crew of the Enterprise, causing them to mutiny and join the colony. That includes the normally loyal and unemotional Mr. Spock, who defies his commanding officer after falling in love with colony botanist Leila Kalomi. Alone on the Enterprise, Captain Kirk must figure out a way to counteract the spores and return his crew to normalcy -- but should he even try, and does he have any right to counteract paradise? As written by Dorothy "D.C." Fontana, "This Side of Paradise" was a brilliant and subtle allegory about the drug counterculture of the 1960s, but it has stood the test of time to triumph as a beautiful, sensitive and deeply moving "Star Trek" masterpiece that features superb performances from William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and exquisite guest star Jill Ireland. Travel request: books about/set in Hawaii! Going to Maui, Big Island, and Oahu. Have already put the True to Me series on hold, and have tried Freckled (not going to Kauai and its not that good anyway…). I have also already read The Unhoneymooners (loved). Also have another memoir on hold already called West of Then. Not looking for a dense read but nonfiction okay. I’m a BIG middle grade novel reader because I teach fourth grade, so please, all ages welcome. YA okay also. Thank you for recommending 2AM at the Cat’s Pajamas a While Back. LOVED IT. WELL DONE YOU!!!! You are my favorite in the podcastiverse. -Laura 2. Hello! I love your podcast, and because of you guys my TBR now stretches into the hundreds. So… thanks, I guess? Anyway, I recently read the book Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, and I LOVED IT. I normally don’t get into epic fantasy, but it occurs to me that the reason for that is because so many novels in that genre are full of dudes. All dudes, all the time, with maybe a token female character here and there. Dudes galore. So my question is: can you recommend any epic fantasy novels, like Red Sister, where the characters are primarily women? I’d prefer adult fiction, although YA is fine as long as it doesn’t center on eye-rolling-ly cheesy/over-dramatic teen romance. Thank you! -Sara 3. I just finished The Witch’s Heart and really liked it! I would love a read-alike. I have already read both Madeline Miller books and loved them as well. Anything you can recommend would be great! -Jessica 4. Hi guys! I’m looking for shifter romance recommendations. Specifically, a romance where the hero pursues the heroine with humor and gusto while she is not that interested. Usually this kind of plot doesn’t last very long so a longer ‘chase’ if you will. I enjoy a male MC that’s funny and confident but also sweet to our female MC (I don’t mind if he’s ‘alphary’). Bonus points if it’s extra smutty

This Side of Paradise was the twenty-fourth episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, with a colony spared certain death by spores that also affect their mood and personality. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the best techniques for playfully dangling from trees. Kirk and his crew are tasked with confirming the demise of a colony founded under bombardment from berthold rays, since discovered to be deadly to humans. On arrival they are shocked to find a well-maintained settlement and to be greeted by colony leader Elias Sandoval (Frank Overton). Among the colonists is an old unrequited flame of Spock's, Leila Kalomi (Jill Ireland) who successfully recruits him to join the colony with the help of some unusual spores. Kirk must find a way to fight nature as more and more of his crew succumb to the spores and seek to abandon their posts to join the colony. This Side of Paradise was directed by Ralph Senensky, the first of his seven Star Treks. The writer was Jerry Sohl, using the pseudonym Nathan Butler due to his dissatisfaction with changes made to his story by Dorothy Fontana. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered mood altering substances and whether people have a right to their fantasies. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. This Side of Paradise was released in 1967. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

To begin the Zelda's Peaches and Biscuits Podcast, we are using March 26 as our launch date in exploring the first two phases of all things Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. First Zelda's life in Montgomery, Alabama before meeting Scott Fitzgerald, and then their courtship from the Summer of 1918 and marriage in April 1920.
