Ricky Rudd doesn't talk about an infamous run-in with Jeff Gordon at Charlotte in this week's installment of our interview, but WE do. Ricky wins the Brickyard 400, which brings up host Rick Houston's favorite story about him.   Ricky also puts on one of the most memorable exhibitions of bravery … if not outright stubbornness … in winning at Martinsville. We conclude by talking about the difficult decision to shut down the team he and wife Linda built from the ground up … and the avenues he took in continuing to feed his competitive drive.   We then dig into the October 1, 1998 issue of Winston Cup Scene.   Ricky Rudd SURVIVES to win on a brutally hot day in Martinsville. Several other competitors were impacted by the heat, so just imagine how THEY felt after the race. Despite the miserable conditions, Rich Bickle has a career day at the Winston Cup level.   Tom Higgins writes about Dale Sr catching Dale Jr smoking … although Dale Jr himself doesn't exactly remember the incident. We have stories on Jim Mattei … and clips … from Ryan Pemberton, Matt Kenseth and Danny Culler.   Then … it's on to the disappearance of Scooby-Doo from the Melling Racing transporter … a case that has not been solved to this day.   NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand.   Be sure to check out the latest and greatest stories from the world of NASCAR at dailydownforce.com. 842: Why Barbara Corcoran's Son, Tom Higgins, Went Against Her Investing Advice

You've seen Barbara Corcoran on Shark Tank, heard of her unbelievable real estate deals that make millions of dollars, and might own a product or two that she's invested in. She's spent her entire career betting on New York real estate, and her risk has come with tens of millions of dollars in rewards. And while Barbara is known for her “go with your gut” type of investing, her son, Tom Higgins, went a completely different direction—and it paid off. Tom has flown under the radar for most of his real estate career, never relying on his Corcoran lineage thanks to his different last name. He worked at a real estate brokerage in college, attended real estate finance classes at night, and eventually found himself in the industry as a real estate development professional, helping develop and renovate over 2,000 multifamily rental units! Tom is a hard-numbers guy. He knows the cash-on-cash return, loan-to-value, and acquisition cost of every deal he's done. Barbara, on the other hand, self-admittedly, can barely remember which metrics are which. Today, Barbara and Tom debate whether you should go with your head or heart when investing in real estate and why using a little bit of both could make you richer than all the other investors. In This Episode We Cover: Barbara and Tom's sneaky way of finding up-and-coming real estate investing areas Why Barbara says to never touch a DIME of your cash flow until… How Tom made Barbara even more money by making her go against her investing nature  One super simple way to immediately find out if a contractor will be worth the money  Risky leverage and the one type of loan Tom says to STAY AWAY from Why Barbara looks for “old ladies” every time she's in a new market  How Tom uses BiggerPockets to meet investors, contractors, and partners (and why you should too!)  And So Much More! Coach Tom Higgins is the current defensive coordinator for the Alberta Golden Bears football team in U Sports. He has previously served as the Director of Officiating for the Canadian Football League and is a former Canadian and American football player, head coach, and general manager. He is the son of a former Philadelphia Eagles tac kle, Tom Higgins Sr., who was a high school football standout at Colonia High School in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. He played nose guard at North Carolina State University. He was an All-American and was a starter in four consecutive bowl games. He was also an All-American wrestler at NC State. After graduating from college in 1976, Higgins attempted to enter the National Football League but was not selected in the 1976 NFL Draft. He instead played in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders for three years. In 1979, Higgins was signed by the Buffalo Bills and played one year in the United States, before returning to Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL. After retiring as a player, Higgins began coaching at the University of Calgary, winning the 1983 CIS title in the second of his three years as an assistant coach under Canadian Football Hall of Fame coach Peter Connellan. In 1985, Tom joined the Stampeders coaching staff, serving in many different capacities until becoming a head coach in 2001. He became head coach of the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos later that year, leading the team to the playoffs in each of his four seasons. In 2002 and 2003, he won division titles, and he won a Grey Cup as a head coach, with the Eskimos in 2003. In 2005, he returned to the Calgary Stampeders as head coach. He held this position for three years, making the playoffs in each. Higgins served as the Director of Officiating from April 2008 to December 2013. Higgins was hired as the new head coach of the Montreal Alouettes on February 24, 2014. Tom coached a historic 2014 football season starting 1–7, turning the team around to a 9-9 second-place finish, hosting a playoff game and defeating the BC Lions. Who says rhetoric can't make you laugh? And who says making people laugh isn't rhetorical? Today's show is the first in a series on Rhetorics of Comedy, in which we interrogate the connections between humor, discourse, and contemporary life.In Part 1, we bring you a discussion with three local standup comics working in Pittsburgh, PA: Jared Helfer, Tom Higgins, and Lorenzo DiSilvio. We explore the rhetorical dimensions of what they do, ranging from how they define funny (and not funny), their strategies for developing and editing new material, how they negotiate their relationships with audiences and their own “personas” on stage, and their metacognitive processes as writers and performers. We even manage to work in a few jokes!Jared Helfer on Instagram: @mysticalhootTom Higgins on Twitter: @homtigginsCheck out Lorenzo DiSilvio's monthly comedy show in Pittsburgh, “A Good Night Out”, which takes place the last Saturday of every month at the Steel City Improv Theater. (https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ATG-Randy.png) Randy enjoyed a long career playing 16 seasons of professional football in the NFL and CFL.  He was definitely a late bloomer, having only started playing football at the age of 18.  Having some success he continued his play as he went to CEGEP which is schooling after high school in the province of Quebec.  From there he chose to attend McGill University which is the Stanford or Harvard of Canada.  Not known for producing pro football players, he set out to be a trail blazer.  When he arrived, he set a goal to be invited to the East-West Shrine game which is an All-Star game for the best college seniors.  It was a lofty goal, especially with his football experience and his school.  However he achieved his goal by becoming one of the best defensive lineman in Canada.  He also learned to snap, which he thought would be a good skill to have to make it to the next level.  Football wasn’t the only thing on his mind while in school.  He made sure to get a teaching degree which he knew would be something he could use if he didn’t make it to the pros, or after his career was over.  The long snapping he learned came in handy at the East-West Shrine game where he garnered the attention of scouts and coaches with his snapping abilities.  That led to him being drafted in the NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.  He went through training camp but was released at the end of pre-season.  However, in the last pre-season game verses the Dallas Cowboys he performed well enough to make an impression on them.  After being released by the Jaguars, he was signed by the Cowboys.  Minutes after winning a locker-room snapping competition, he was rushed of to be introduced as a member of the team!  After his stint with the Cowboys he returned to Canada to play with the Edmonton Eskimos, who drafted him in the Canadian Football League draft.  He won a Grey Cup with them as well as with the Calgary Stampeders, whom he would play with after.  He went to Calgary in part due to their coach, Tom Higgins, who coached him in Edmonton.  In 2008, they made another coaching change and brought in John Hufnagel.  The new regime didn’t value his defensive skills as much so he became primarily a long snapper.  It was a tough pill to take, but he maintained a positive attitude and excelled at what he was asked to do.  His 2014 season was memorable for a few reasons.  That year he was awarded the Tom Pate Award, for his contributions to the community.  He also, along with the team, won the Grey Cup that year.  Even though he didn’t play in the game, he still felt apart of the team and felt he contributed to the victory.  The following season he regained his starting position as the long snapper.  After a final season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders he went into the Fire Department.  Everyone he asked about being a Fire Fighter always had something good to say about it.  That prompted him to pursue a career as a fireman.  He loves his job and the team aspect of it that is similar to his football team comradery.  He continues to teach as well part-time along with speaking engagements for anti-bullying initiatives.  For more information on Randy and to follow what he’s doing please go to the links below.   Twitter: www.twitter.com/randychevrier (https://twitter.com/randychevrier?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) Instagam:  www.instagram.com/randychevrier/ (https://www.instagram.com/randychevrier/) Resources www.atgridiron.com (https://www.atgridiron.com) www.symfonies.ca (http://www.symfonies.ca) www.audible.com (https://amzn.to/2Sef9Rx)

We're talking about the Gander Outdoors 400 at Pocono Raceway. Kyle Busch took the victory, earning his 49th career victory, tying Tony Stewart on the all-time list. He held off teammate Daniel Suarez and Alex Bowman for victory.  Kevin Harvick had a fast racecar but started from the rear of the field and had contact with teammate Aric Almirola that prevented him from going to victory lane. We'll talk about that and break down the entire event from the 400 miler at Pocono Raceway.  Also, 13 cars failed qualifying Saturday night at Pocono, resulting in teams in a mixed starting lineup. This weekend at Watkins Glen inspection will be moved to Sunday morning before the race. We'll discuss that!  Plus, Christopher Bell beat Justin Allgaier at Iowa and it was the Kyle Busch show in the truck series. We'll touch on that as well.  And we lost a NASCAR legend as writer Tom Higgins passed away Tuesday morning. We'll do the show in honor of him tonight!  Then, the silly season is starting up. A bunch of comments came out today from Joe Gibbs Racing and Christopher Bell. What will be the solution? Also, Kasey Kahne discussed his future with Frontstretch.com. What will happen with Kahne? Do we see him hanging around in the Cup Series for 2019? We'll give our early predictions for the silly season.  Your phone calls 917-889-8280!
