I don't need any of that. And, and I would go to business networking events, I would, I would talk to people. And this is all just part part of I won't say that. Yeah. Yeah, I just didn't get it. But as soon as I understood it, life became so much easier. I became happier, my relationships became better. We need, it doesn't matter if it's not your ultimate objective that you're working towards. But there needs to be a line in the sand that you're working towards. We need to kind of imagine that we want to climb doesn't matter if it's just a little ant hill." We had the chance to talk with Tristan Wright, owner of Evolve to Grow in Victoria Australia. He shared with us his pain points of having a business and how he got to where he is today with great advice for all business owners. BIO: I wasn't a natural born Business Coach. In fact, I started adult life as a moderately successful (and unengaged) Engineer. Work was never my focus, I'd live for time spent cycling with my mates. It was during this paddle-posse that I was tasked with finding and buying some race gear as we looked to turn our mateship into a serious race team. I explored the caverns of the Cycling Wear world—it left a lot to be desired. And just like that, I created and built Seight Custom Cycling Wear. Before too long I was running a $300,000 business from my kitchen table while still tinkering away at engineering. I wasn't even 30, and all the success made me arrogant. Currently 80 percent of SMEs fail. If you're in the top 20 per cent and survive your first year the chances of your business celebrating its 5th birthday are around 50-50. Australian entrepreneur and business coach Tristan Wright has grown a kitchen-table startup to a seven-figure turnover, but it wasn't plain sailing. After he left his job in engineering to concentrate fully on his small business the Australian dollar plummeted leaving him $200,000 in debt. His marriage also broke down at the same time. Introducing Tristan Wright Today's guest shows that it is possible to combine a passion in sports and and create something amazing. He is the founder of evolve to grow where he now shows business owners across the world how to create a business that doesn't end up running them. And he did this himself by turning a sporting passion into a global operation turning over seven figures while providing the kind of personal and professional flexibility many people dream of? Is this possible for most of us to do? Well as he says "I'm here to tell you that yes, it's possible for your business, too (with the right approach and plenty of passion and determination, of course!). When I started my first business – cycling clothing company Seight – I was entering an incredibly tough retail environment. Many of my competitors were major players and were already well established in the marketplace, so achieving cut-through and a profitable market share were just some of the many challenges I faced. How The Dots Joined Up For Tristan And yet just a few short years later my business was turning over more than $300,000, and all while I was yet to give up my previous day job. Fast forward another couple of years and my business had hit the magical seven-figure turnover mark and was running almost on autopilot, allowing me to work on what I wanted To combine a business and a passion and grow them into a profitable enterprise with a major following both locally and internationally is something I'm immensely proud of. Now I'm proud to say I'm helping other small business owners to do all this and more. Some have taken their business ideas from seed to fruition and are now running highly profitable operations, while others have grown their business and processes to a point that has enabled them to take extended holidays while their business runs itself. It seems to me that this man has the same logic and viewpoint as myself and Join Up Dots. Whats the point of creating a business that doesn't then give you the freedom to escape and live the life you want? So does he look back and think that it was obvious the way that he went about it, or simply a series of lucky breaks? And where do most people go wrong when they start their own business? Tristan Wright is the rock star Business Sherpa from down under. He is based in Melbourne, Australia and has a background in leadership coaching and applied business. He studied engineering and industrial design. He worked in that space for a couple of years but decided to start his own cycling clothing company, Seight, at the age of 24. Presently, his company, evolve to GROW gives business owners and entrepreneurs the tools and support they need to simplify their workload, grow their profits, and reclaim their time.   “At the end of the day, I'm not responsible for how they feel and disconnected myself from that outcome. So, I have my own goal plan and I know what I want to achieve. People can see that I'm driven with where I want to get and they can see that I'm congruent with what I want to achieve, and how my actions align with that.” Tristan Wright   Worst investment ever It is not always great to be at the top of the world At a very young age, Tristan Wright had already made a lot of money from his successful sportswear business. He started across Australia and ventured into different countries across the world. He was indeed feeling on top of the world for owning a seven-figure business at the age of 26. However, because of his initial success, he thought that he needed no one’s advice. He felt invincible and believed that if he has achieved something others could not, what was stopping him from doing more? Woke up with debt One day, Tristan was this successful businessman from Australia dominating the sportswear industry, the next day, he woke up with a quarter-million dollars of debt and a wife who told him that they were over. For six months, everything just went from bad to worse. The Australian dollar dropped against US dollar just at the time he was investing in growing his business. Mindset investment is equally important as monetary investment What Tristan means by mindset investment is investing in yourself before investing in others. Earlier, he thought that making other people happy, would make him happy as well. He was living a life according to what society wanted him to be and how they perceived him to be. He was so focused on making other people happy, putting up a show for them by looking nice and successful that he forgot his own goal plans. He disconnected himself from what truly made him happy. Yes, he was successful on the outside, but he felt empty and inauthentic inside which made him really unhappy. Personal development includes minding your own business When Tristan hit rock bottom, he realized that he had no one to turn to. Those people who he invested so much in were never there to support him. With that, he realized that he needed to put an end to the show and live his true self. He started investing in himself by following what his goal plans were. Little by little, he saw improvement in his personal life. He was able to recover from his losses, grew the business again and eventually sold it. Lessons learned Live your own goal plan Your goal plan should reflect who you are and not what others perceive you to be. What you want to do and not what others expect you to do. And how you want to achieve that without losing yourself in the process. Take ownership and responsibility for all your actions Anything that happens to you is the product of your own doing. If the results are great, then you only have yourself to be grateful to. If it’s not, then reflect and move forward. Work on yourself first To be able to be successful not just in business but in life as general, people need to continue to invest in themselves. If they want to go to the next level, they need to explore who they are as a person to be able to continue to move forward and grow. Surround yourself with people who are ahead of you It is important to surround yourself with people who you want to be surrounded with. To be able to learn, choose the people who are 2, 3, or 4 steps ahead of you. Andrew’s takeaways If you have a problem with that, that is your problem At the end of the day, you are not responsible for how other people feel and what outcome they want. You can be empathic and kind but there needs to be a clear line delineating you from other people’s problems. Authenticity is what attracts people People value authenticity more than expensive and false advertising. It is authenticity that builds your business. This is the tie that strengthens your relationship with your customers. Do what makes you happy It is not always too late to invest in personal development. No matter how successful you want to be, if you are not doing it for yourself, you will never be happy and satisfied. Actionable advice Start asking yourself if you are living your goal plan. If not, then it is time to do it now. You need to be able to have a clear direction on what you want to be, what you want to do and how you want to do it. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Tristan wants to get on the speaking circuit across Asia. He already started in Australia but wants to have an impact in the Asian market by sharing his story. Business Development with Tristan Wright Business development is something most businesses, in fact all businesses, will have to talk about. Today, Tristan is talking to us specifically about small business development. Tristan's experience of business development  If you dreamed to climb Mount Everest, you wouldn't go alone would you? You would want someone who has already been there to take you. These people are called sherpas. Interestingly, Tristan calls himself a business sherpa. He is someone who has been up to the top of his Mount Everest (this being his previous business) - he actually fell down the side of it - and he learnt a lot from that journey. Now, he uses those experiences and knowledge to help others in their own small business goals; he helps them reach their own Mount Everests. Tristan the business sherpa Sherpa's are really important because they steer you in the right direction; they tell you where to put your feet and where not. At the end of the day, Tristan doesn't know everything - nobody can know everything. However, he is can be a helpful outside perspective, drawing on his own experiences to help other businesses. Yes, there are still going to be mistakes made along that journey, but they're going to be realised a lot quicker and worked through a lot quicker. Once we get to a certain stage of growth, we need to evolve to start our new period of growth. Hence, "Evolve to Grow". A three-step process - or not? Within Tristan's business, he has developed a three-step process. In fact, it's not three anymore but a FIVE step process called the Ultimate Objective Ladder. First of all, you need to begin with the end objective in mind. What do actually want to achieve? What is the end goal? From there, the next step is to research. Work out if the end goal is viable and the right end goal to be directing your business too. Strategy; how are you going to achieve this end goal? Execution plan - how are you going to get there? So many people get stuck at this point but execution is vital for achieving your goal. Step back, review and analyse to make sure that your execution is helping move forward toward the goals that you have achieved. Funnily enough, you need to be stepping back every 90 to 100 days, which links nicely with the name of our podcast! The human brain works in 90-100 day spreads so, if you go much beyond that, you will get lost. Make sure that reflection is a regular priority. Purpose and process This is a five-step process that is very similar to other processes. What Tristan has done is draw on lots of different business development processes - corporate systems, for example - and translated it into layman's terms, considering small businesses. The interesting thing with this process is that 1 and 2 are not the other way around. Tristan is very specific about knowing what you want out of life and your small business - then you can do your market research and figure out how you can get there. This fits in a lot with the idea of purpose, which has been discussed a lot on the show recently; do what is right for you. It is so easy to get sidetracked by a shiny object but, if it's not tied into your own purpose and goals, it can lose it's shine and become a burden very, very quickly. Tristan Wright joined me from Melbourne, Australia to discuss how his path from uni (college) for engineering to "real life" work lead him to starting a company making custom cycling apparel. That took off and he built it into a solid 7 figure business that sold around the globe. He says that it didn't go as smoothly as a story book since balancing that and home life ended up costing him a marriage. He says that one thing that he learned is that to build a business you need to be able to accept help from someone who has the experience to see what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong and help you adjust your sails to do more of the right stuff. This is a challenging area for growers, with high heat, high ET, salty soils in the valley floor, and very porous soil in the Mesa. Tristan has decided to make some radical changes on his operation to overcome some substantial challenges. He is switching to no-till and integrating cover crops to increase the water holding capacity. He’s even considering integrating livestock to add more carbon and further restore the soil.
