Wendy Gonzalez is the CEO of Sama, an ethical AI company that provides training and jobs with equitable pay and benefits to those who face the greatest barriers to stable employment. Among the companies it provides AI development data to are Microsoft, Ford, Walmart, Google, and many others. But before its current incarnation, Sama was a very different organization. It began as a non-profit, the brainchild and lifelong passion of its founder, Leila Janah, who sadly passed away in 2020. Her vision was to provide under-served communities in sub-Saharan Africa with opportunities for what she called “dignified work.” She believed this was the fastest and most sustainable way for people to not only gain their financial independence but to spread prosperity in their communities. For almost 20 years, Wendy Pease has worked with hundreds of companies to help them communicate across more than 200 languages and cultures. As a young child, she lived in Mexico, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Through these experiences, she fell in love with the languages and cultures of the world. She came to understand that people around the world are similar. Although how they communicate can be quite different and miscommunication can lead to trouble. She bought a small translation company in 2004. The previous founder focused on high quality written translation and spoken interpretation services. Through that acquisition, Wendy became an expert in multilingual communications. Since then, Rapport International has grown substantially.If you're looking for a way to get better international deals and don't know where to start, Wendy Pease is the right person to help. Acquiring VS Starting A New Company If you're new to an industry, finding a buyable company can be a huge win. Acquiring an existing company means you already have an active base of existing customers. It costs up to seven times more to acquire a new customer than to retain an existing one.A good way to think of acquisitions vs starting a new company is to look at it as just buying your ideal customer. Wendy already had a love for translations and a deep understanding of why cross-cultural communication requires delicacy in business. What Wendy was really buying was their book of business and an avenue to pursue her passion. Often, people assume buying a business means using all of what comes with it but that's rarely the case. You might not need their accounting team, because you already have one. Or, you might not need their offices because you want to work remotely. So it's not so much that you're buying the whole business framework, as much as you are buying their customers.Wendy made a great point about what went into her decision to buy a business that the success rate of new businesses is low. In contrast, the rate of success of a business continuing after two years is high. She's right! The business failure rate in the U.S. within the first year is nearly 20% — 18.4%, to be exact — according to a LendingTree analysis of BLS data. Wendy also explained that she was tired of not being able to control her work schedule. Becoming a CEO means creating or adapting the structure of a business to suit your needs including your own schedule. Major changes like shifts in timezones, location dependence, or expected timelines are something you want to be sure you're on the same page as your team about before acquiring a small business with intentions to change their expectations.Wendy gave us multiple great reasons to go the acquisition route. Some of these may be worth considering if you've been thinking of founding a new start-up or growing your existing ventures. Business Internationalization There's a lot of potential for companies to do international business. But it's still a small portion that does - less than 1% of US companies export. To internationalize your business, it only takes small modifications on your website. The most important thing is to translate to other languages to bring in additional visitors. Wendy pointed out that 90% of buyers are more likely to spend time on a website if it's in their language. The state and federal governments offer free support to companies that want to do international business. Such as grants to help you do an international trade show, help to translate your website, and also free stretch strategic advice. There are resources to help when you're getting into a deal situation, such as the Department of Commerce. In this department, it is possible to find people at your state trade offices who have been to other countries to share their business tips. Lessons From Report International It is very important when cutting a deal with somebody in another country to dedicate yourself to translating the content into their mother tongue. Even though English is the global language, people feel more comfortable with a better deal if you're doing things in their language. The globe is getting more used to people's function differently. By spending that time learning from others and making these minor efforts, companies have achieved more success and deals. Wendy explains that working with translations specifically means anything written. Interpretation means anything spoken. In Report International, they start with the company's strategy, define what they want to accomplish, and go all the way through providing an in-person interpreter, telephone interpreting, or video interpreting. Lessons From Wendy When many companies internationalize, they don't have a trusted local relationship. Companies think that they either have to open up an international office or they've got to go right out and get a distributor. But there are lots of ways that you can enter the country without having that trusted relationship. No need to hire the distributor directly. The Department of Commerce has offices all over the world. Every company can reach out to people in the country and they'll help make introductions. Do a trial basis and build that relationship. And once you do deals, you get to know more about what's there. Closing an International Deal The Right Way When closing an international deal, it's not enough just to speak the language in which you're closing a deal. You need to understand the culture. Just because someone is bilingual does not mean they can help, as they may not understand the misunderstandings that can happen. Wendy recommended hiring professional translators and professional interpreters. They have been trained on how to navigate the two cultures. As an example in Report International, they work in over 200 different languages. The translators or interpreters have to be fully bilingual, as well as understanding the culture and business practices to close a deal. In whichever contract, even if the person you close the deal with speaks some English, the best thing is to have an interpreter because they work as the real cultural conduit with explaining what's going on. We chat more with paper florist Wendy Anderson about how she's grown her paper flower hobby into a business. How do you take the leap from hobby to business? It can feel terrifying, and even if you've taken the leap and started down the business path, you are still going to encounter bumps along the way. Fortunately, there are many paper florists who have successfully built their hobby into a paper flower business. One of them is Wendy Anderson of Just Imagine, who shared with us in our latest episode of Paper Talk about how she took her paper flower love from hobby to business. Here's some of the advice she shared with us. Calculate Your Costs When Wendy first started selling paper flowers, she only charged a dollar for each rose. She was using the only crepe paper available in New Zealand, which was not high quality, so she figured she couldn't charge more than what the paper cost. But then her friend pointed out that she had other supply costs, as well as time costs. They sat down and calculated out just how much she was spending on supplies. Each rose was actually costing closer to three dollars—and that was before accounting for Wendy's time! She was losing money. Her friend encouraged her to raise her prices to a rate that would pay her an hourly wage. At first, Wendy was hesitant, but eventually, she said, “I found an in the middle, intermediary range, where I could cover my costs.” She decided to keep her prices somewhat low in the beginning, but over time, as paper flowers became more well known in her area and she built up her reputation, she raised her rates. Store Paper Flowers Safely After creating big installations, you might be left with hundreds of flowers and foliage pieces that now need to be stored or disposed of. You don't want to throw away your work, but how do you store your paper flowers without damaging them? Especially if you hope to use them again or eventually sell them? Wendy had this problem after creating an archway for her father's 80th birthday party. It was a large installation, spanning a set of double doors, and it involved a ton of blooms. But what to do with them? Her solution was to create vase-like structures from tubes that can hold flowers upright inside of opaque plastic containers. She even adds in anti-moisture packets to keep her blooms extra safe. Wendy describes more about where she got the supplies to make her storage solution in the episode. Getting creative to solve problems like storage is a great way to use your crafting skills to solve a business problem. You can probably commiserate with Wendy's description of her craft room being covered in supplies and flowers, but a little inventiveness can help keep your products safe from the creative chaos. Share Your Mistakes One of the ways Wendy grows as a paper florist is through our Facebook group. She encourage listeners to pop into our monthly meetings: “Be at the Makers Meetings. No need to be nervous. We have so much fun. We laugh. We talk. We share our techniques, our tips. We share the ugly as well, because if I can tell you what went wrong when I made it, then that might help you learn, too.” It can be very uncomfortable to share your mistakes, especially when you're new to the paper flower world and community. But every paper florist, no matter how experienced, makes mistakes. A wonderful way to make lemonade out of lemons is to learn from that mistake, and even better, share that lemonade with others! When you help someone else avoid a mistake, they'll help you in turn later. It's a fantastic way to help our community grow as artists. Wendy ran the HR team at Sick Kids Hospital after managing a hospice in Toronto and a volunteer program at a children's mental health centre in Whitby. Wendy was then recruited by Walmart when they first started implementing HR in 2006. If you've ever found yourself in the position of wanting to fire a client, this week's episode of the This Week In Weddings podcast is for you. This week, we're chatting with wedding planner and designer Wendy Kay, who has successfully ended more than one client relationship and is sharing her experience and tips for having done so.  About our guest: Wendy Kay is the owner of Birds of a Feather Events, a boutique wedding planning and design firm that focuses on outdoor and destination weddings and offering their clients a concierge-level experience. Wendy has a background in television production where she produced and directed live television and called the shots - literally! After 8 years of 60 hour work weeks and feeling a disconnect between the subject matter and her clients, the burnout was real.com and she decided she needed a change or she was going to drown. Around that same time she was planning her own wedding, her best friend's wedding, and another friend's sister's wedding, and she was thriving! She had found something that combined the love she still had for her current job, but a whole new creative outlet. She was in her element. When she came home from her honeymoon, she got to work. She paid someone on Etsy a whopping $300 to design her logo, website, and her business cards. She was a real wedding planner, the card said so! She soon realized that planning someone else's wedding is much scarier than planning your own. She knew what she knew, and it was not a lot! She is so thankful for those girls who took a chance on her in the beginning and hired her, but really, what were they thinking?
