Heath Ling planted out the barren strip at an intersection in Woolston, with marigolds, lupins and poppies. He owns a nearby bookstore and has been working on the garden for four years. Now, Christchurch council has banned him from the median strip for his own safety and because he's a distraction to drivers, Heath Ling spoke to Lisa Owen.

There are two types of politicians in this world. It's not left-wing or right-wing. And it applies to all politicians - central government and local government. The first type, are the ones who think we're all stupid and will believe everything they say. The second type, are the ones who are so deluded that they actually believe everything they say themselves. And I'm trying to work out which category Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger and his 16 cronies around the council table fit into. Do they think we're stupid? Or do they actually believe everything they say? I'll get back to them shortly. But first, here's what you need to know. If you live in places such as Woolston and Bromley, you're facing a rates increase of 14 percent. ‘Ooh yes we know, you're in Bromley putting up with that stench from the burnt-out wastewater plant and the stench from that dirty old compost plant - but we're still going to increase your rates by 14 percent'. If that doesn't prove to you that the Council doesn't give a monkeys about the people of Bromley, then nothing will. Elsewhere in the city, increases of between one percent and 13 percent are on the cards. One percent for people living in the central city and a 13 percent increase for people living in areas such as Aranui, Burwood, Avondale and New Brighton. The one percent increase, by the way, is for central city ratepayers. If you're in Avonhead and Russley, it looks like your rates will be going up by just two percent. If you take all of those numbers, crunch them together and work out an average rates increase across the city, it's just under eight percent. But I think we can reasonably say that it's the people on the eastside who are, yet again, being shafted by the city council. Especially Bromley. A 14 percent increase! Talk about a kick in the teeth. This is the same council who knows how desperate people there are. And I know for a fact that the mayor and the councillors have all been told of one resident, in particular, who is so desperate, that they are completely at the end of their tether. I don't think I need to elaborate on that one - you know what I mean when I say someone is completely at the end of their tether. So back to our mayor and councillors - and whether they think we are stupid and will swallow anything and everything they say, or whether they actually believe some of the nonsense they come up with. Let's take Mayor Phil Mauger, for example. Ahead of last year's local body election, I asked him what he thought were the biggest issues or challenges facing Christchurch. And he came up with three. He said Bromley, and sorting out the terrible stench the people there are really struggling with. The second challenge he said Christchurch was facing, was climate change. And the third, was inflation. And he said he would be prioritising those things if he was elected mayor. So I asked him how he was going to do that. Especially in relation to the inflation thing. And he said he was going to keep rates increases at an absolute minimum. And during the campaign, as we know, he talked about rates increases of no more than three or four percent. Anyone with their head screwed on knew he was talking out of his you-know-what. But enough people fell for it - because he's the mayor. As for his other priorities - Bromley and climate change. Well, if you heard the passionate call we had yesterday from Vickie in Bromley, you'll know he's failing to deliver on sorting that shambles out. And as for climate change? He wants to build an airport in Tarras - at a time when you've got Schipol Airport in Amsterdam abandoning plans to build a new runway and banning private jets all because of climate change. But it's not just Phil. There are other councillors around that council table who also trotted out the same old nonsense about keeping rates down. Rain poured down this week, but there was still plenty of cricket on. It started with the retirement of Katherine Sciver-Brunt, a real servant of the women's game. Mid-week, Richard wrote a piece about the Hundred & how it could have a future so we discuss that in this episode. Speaking of the Hundred, there have been some more contracts come out this week as it is now an open market. Some more contract news is that Scotland women have announced their first pro contracts including podcast guest, Katherine Fraser. This week we spoke to Jess Woolston of Northern Diamonds who took their first 5-fer this week. We will be back next week but in the meantime, our Instagram, TikTok & YouTube is “Noughtie Child Podcast” and our Twitter is “00ChildPodcast” so feel free to give those a follow to stay up to date!

People who live near a scrap metal yard that went up in flames in Christchurch last night say they had repeatedly raised concerns about crushed cars at the site. The blaze broke out at National Steel in Woolston, sending up a huge plume of potentially toxic smoke and forcing some from their homes. Jean Edwards reports.
A large fire is still burning in a scrap metal yard in the Garlands Road area of Woolston in Christchurch. Reports of cars on fire came in about eight o'clock last night with smoke billowing across the city. Fifteen firetrucks and more than 50 firefighters were called to battle the blaze. A public health warning was issued last night with people affected by the smoke told to close their windows and doors and not go outside. Officer in charge at the fire Dave Key spoke to Corin Dann.

A TRUE STORY OF RACE & RELIGION IN THE 1960s DEEP SOUTH MUSIC Intro: “Yice Hole!" by CHIGGERTICKY; “Jesus Loves the Little Children” music by George F. Root, words by C. Herbert Woolston [public domain] “Praise Him, Praise Him! All Ye Little Children” words and music: Anonymous [public domain] Outro: “Jesus Loves the Little Children” performed (poorly) by CHIGGERTICKY FUN FACT: The melody to “Jesus Loves the Little Children” was composed by George F. Root as a Civil War song titled “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, the Boys Are Marching.” Root is also credited with “The Battle Cry of Freedom,” and “Just Before the Battle, Mother” (I'd love to hear that one!). Rev. C. Herbert Woolston apparently found “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp” a catchy little ditty; and, inspired by Matthew 19:14 “But Jesus said, ‘Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven,'” Woolston appropriated Root's melody to the words I learned to sing in Sunday School. So now you know!

Asbestos fibres are leaching into Christchurch's drinking water supply from ageing underground pipes, according to a University of Otago study. While the researchers say there is no immediate cause for public health concern, the discovery has prompted calls for better monitoring of asbestos in drinking water to help councils prioritise which pipes to replace. The researchers sent drinking water samples from asbestos cement pipes in 35 places across the city, targeting those laid between the 1930s and 1960s, for analysis at a specialist laboratory in the United States. Asbestos fibres were identified in all 20 samples taken from fire hydrants, which draw from the mains supply, and in samples from three out of 15 household taps. Higher levels of asbestos were found in suburbs that suffered liquefaction in the Christchurch earthquakes. One of the study's authors, Dr Sarah Mager, said the long fibre concentrations were below United States guidelines, which was the only country with a regulatory threshold for asbestos in drinking water. "Asbestos in drinking water sounds really scary. "The World Health Organisation has ruled that it is not of concern. My concern is we simply haven't been monitoring it for any length of time to really be sure. "Asbestosis has a really long latency as well, so we may not know for a long time if it's of health concern." Mager said epidemiological links between asbestos fibres in drinking water and cancers could only be established if data existed, but it was not regularly collected. "We cannot continue to rely on asbestos cement piping that was laid in the 1930s and 1940s, or even as late as the 1960s, and still expect that to have sufficient integrity to ensure clean, safe drinking water." Christchurch has an 1814km underground water mains network, 789km of which is laid in asbestos cement piping. Water pipes were commonly made from asbestos cement because metal was vulnerable to corrosion. Another of the study's authors, Michael Knopick, said asbestos cement piping had a lifespan of between 40 and 60 years. "Asbestos piping that's been in the ground longer than 50 years can degrade and release fibres from its walls. It's been described at this point as having the characteristics of wet cardboard." Knopick said Christchurch's high purity water was corroding the pipes, which were also brittle and damaged in the earthquakes. "We found that particularly in areas where there had been moderate to severe road liquefaction that our results were significantly higher. It was quite clear that liquefaction and earthquake damage had resulted in a bit of accelerated decay." The oldest pipes pre-date 1950 and lie under small pockets of New Brighton, Hei Hei, Mt Pleasant and Halswell. More pipes were laid in Hei Hei, Riccarton, Aranui, Halswell, Ilam, Burnside, Bishopdale, Redwood, Hornby, Parklands, Lyttelton, Phillipstown, Somerfield and Woolston between the 1950s and 1970s. Christchurch City Council's acting head of three waters Tim Drennan said people should not be alarmed by the study's findings. "The levels of asbestos found weincredibly low. Although the study focused on Christchurch, nearly every water supply network in New Zealand has some asbestos pipe work. "Internationally there is no consistent evidence to suggest that ingested asbestos is hazardous - a fact the authors of the study acknowledge." Drennan said 190km of piping had already been replaced and the council was progressively working through the rest, based on their condition. "Around 66 per cent of breakages in the past 12 months have been asbestos pipes, which means that the asbestos pipes have been prioritised for replacement over the coming years anyway, just due to their condition. "Between now and 2045 the vast majority will be fully replaced." New Zealand has 9000km of asbestos piping...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After more than three decades working for the same chemical company, Joan Cordiner accepted a senior role at a university. For many, she says, the move from industry to academia can feel like being a square peg in a round hole. Academic colleagues sometimes need to be persuaded that skills acquired elsewhere have value. But collaborations and career moves between the two sectors are crucial, she adds, in countries with ambitions to become (or remain) research powerhouses.David Bogle, pro-vice provost of the Doctoral School at University College London, defines this “porosity” as the movement of people within academia and beyond it — including careers in government and the non-profit sector — and the skills and experience acquired en route. This first episode of a six-part series about porosity also includes perspectives from Søren Bregenholt, chief executive of the Sweden-based biotech company Alligator Bioscience; UK entrepreneur and technology-transfer professional Nessa Carey; and US science journalist Chris Woolston. Woolston reports on Nature's annual career surveys, including its most recent one on salary and job satisfaction in academia and beyond. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to the third Special Series on the Worthfull Project podcast! If you listened to any of the Worthfull Home or Worthfull Work Special Series, you'll enjoy this one focused on how we own our worth in the experience of motherhood. I have found certain topics relating to self-worth that are especially interesting to me, so I wanted to record mini episodes on each of these topics where I interview several people on the same topic to get a rich perspective on how to own my worth in these areas. This series is all about owning our worth in being mothers -- whatever that may look like for you. As a current mother of children at home, children who are grown and gone, or actively serving children from many families as a bonus mom, I think there is something really deep and profound about self-worth and motherhood. I interviewed four friends who I think exemplify worthfull motherhood beautifully and I think the holidays are a beautiful time to reflect on the worth of mothers. I made this series with the intention to binge listen, but enjoy however you want. This episode is with my designer and crafter friend Rebecca Woolston. You heard her on the Worthfull Home series talking about how she has consciously created a home for her family, but I equally love what she had to say about being a mother and what it's taught her about her worth. In this latest episode Dave virtually visits Woolston Rovers through committee member Liam Horrigan, listen in as they chat about the best and worst of times at the club, playing in the Summer Conference, rejoining the North West Men's League, mutual co-operation and rivalries with other clubs in the area and their hopes for the future.
Phil’s guest on this episode of the IT Career Energizer podcast is Stephen Woolston. Stephen is a program and service delivery consultant with an extensive background in IT infrastructure. He holds a first-class computer science degree from Nottingham University and started his career working on mainframe systems at Norwich Union. He is also a professional coach, helping people to become happier and more successful in what they do. In this episode, Phil and Stephen Woolston discuss how to quickly adapt your approach to problem-solving, in an ever-changing landscape, by using radical adaptability and positive direction-finding. How to quickly adapt to new environments, find and fix more problems effectively. As well as the importance of having confidence in your abilities. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (3.04) TOP CAREER TIP Develop radical adaptability and a positive direction finder. You need to have the ability to drop into any commercial environment and quickly figure out what is happening and how to move things in the right direction. During the podcast, Stephen explains, what he means by radical adaptability and positive direction-finding. As well as how you can develop those skills. (5.23) WORST CAREER MOMENT Stephen was once an operational planner, responsible for the governance of approving renewal costs. When he started, he was handed a cost schedule that he assumed covered everything. Unfortunately, a big expense had been left off that schedule. From this experience, Stephen learned it is not enough to simply check your work. You also need to be on the lookout for mistakes that have slipped through the net. The experience taught him that no colleague can produce flawless work every time. (9.46) CAREER HIGHLIGHT For Stephen, the highlight of his career was taking a leading role in Norwich Union´s Unix systems management. At the time, Unix was in its infancy. So, Stephen had to develop backup, recovery, monitoring and alert systems because they were not really available elsewhere. (12.56) THE FUTURE OF CAREERS IN I.T The fact that there are always new problems to solve is exciting. But it is also a huge challenge. You have to constantly be learning new things to keep up. Something that will also be the case in the future. (15.12) THE REVEAL What first attracted you to a career in I.T.?– As a child, Stephen liked sci-fi, so a career in IT was a natural choice. What’s the best career advice you received?– Every day you are creating your career. Things are constantly changing so you need to regularly review the direction you are going in. What’s the worst career advice you received?– Get into one big, rich and powerful company and stay there. What would you do if you started your career now?– Stephen would network more and do so from the very start. What’s your number one non-technical skill?– Communication skills, if yours are good you can work anywhere on any project you want. How do you keep your own career energized?– By seeking opportunities to work in new environments. What do you do away from technology? – To relax, Stephen listens to movie soundtrack music and spends a lot of his downtime coaching others. (19.40) FINAL CAREER TIP Have confidence in your abilities, don´t worry that you don´t know everything. Nobody understands a technology or subject completely. Tech moves too fast for that to be possible. No firm is running perfect systems. There is no shortage of things to fix or update, so you will always be able to contribute something important. BEST MOMENTS (3.26) – Stephen- “You cannot fit the client's problem to your solution, you have to fit your solution to the client's problem.” (7.03) – Stephen- “If there is an error somewhere, find it before it finds you.” (12.44) – Stephen- “With every evolution, we solve old problems, and we create new ones. They're the ones we need to focus on.” (14.14) – Stephen- “Develop adaptability and positive direction-finding skills to meet the new challenges in IT.” (17.36) – Stephen- “Good communication skills enable you to solve many more problems and work with far more people.” (20.17) – Stephen- “Have confidence in your abilities. Don´t worry that you might not know everything about everything.” ABOUT THE HOST – PHIL BURGESS Phil Burgess is an independent IT consultant who has spent the last 20 years helping organisations to design, develop and implement software solutions. In this Episode I interview Andy Woolston on his career and what made his turn to comedy. We then decide on the best movie trilogy of all time *Spoilers* it is definitely not Lord of the Rings...

An isolation procedure has been agreed for the remaining below ground well heads which will allow chlorination to cease, early in August, at these pump stations:Burnside, Grampian, Thompsons and Farrington in the North West supply zone.Hills and Lake Terrace in the Central zone.Woolston in the Ferrymead zone.Richard Green spoke to Helen Beaumont, Christchurch City Council Programme Manager of Water Supply Improvement, about this.
Often we think of nature reserves are a product of preserving pristine or unique habitat for wildlife. Yet many nature reserves are products of reclaiming man made activity and letting nature take its course, with a little help. For this Living World wildlife presenter Lindsey Chapman relives the magic of a once industrial landscape which Lionel Kelleway explored in 2000. Lionel visits Woolston Eyes nature reserve near to Warrington where he meets up with Brian Martin who at the time of recording had been at the reserve for over 20 years recording the wildlife. This reserve is owned by the Manchester Ship Canal company and for years was used as a site to deposit dredging’s from the canal. Over the decades as Lionel discovered the site became a hotch potch of heaps and shallow areas which since 1980 when the site began the long process of conversion from the devastation of canal spoil into a wildlife haven, yet only a stone’s throw from the Warrington urban area. Along the way Lionel discovers some of the species which had moved in to make this their home, such sedge warbler and black necked grebe which the site has become an important breeding area for. In summer many butterflies, moths, other insects can be found, including dragonflies making use of the lagoon ponds which have been created on site. To bring this story up to date since this programme was first broadcast; Lindsey Chapman offers some recent updates into the denizens of Woolston Eyes
About this episode... Our second nugget for this month on sex workers is with LJ Woolston - an advocate, artist social worker. He works with LGBT youth - and often that means that youth who are involved in sex work, either through choice or for survival. He is also the widower of Diana Hemingway - an amazing transgender sex worker, activist, and advocate for rights. He speaks to us a little bit about his work, Diana, and how he works to honor her legacy. About LJ Woolston... Landon "LJ" Woolston, MSW, is a youth worker, an advocate, artist, a queer and trans-Miami native, and a Point Foundation alumni. Through his own personal journey navigating social justice issues, LJ dedicated himself to using his privilege to interrupt oppression, standing alongside and uplifting the narratives of those who are most marginalized in our communities. LJ has been working directly with LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness in Miami for over four years. He also develops and delivers training for service providers all throughout Miami, training on topics such as LGBTQ competency, trans competency, supporting queer and trans youth in varied spaces (hospitals, shelters, schools, camps, etc.), and harm reduction approach for serving young people engaged in commercial or survival sex work. Additionally, LJ uses one of his hobbies, photography, as a form of activism -- a means of sparking critical dialogue around body and sex positivity, gender, and race. His images of trans people and trans bodies have been published in several queer publications and The New Times, and he has had several local photography shows. LJ sees photography as a particularly powerful, radical medium for trans and queer folks to explore themselves, and to document their varied paths toward self-discovery, body-love, and self-love. In December of 2016, LJ lost the love of his life, Diana Hemingway, a prominent queer and trans activist, sex worker, and sex worker rights advocate, when she died by suicide. Diana suffered from mental illness, experienced homelessness several times in her life, and was also discarded by multiple families on her journey toward being her most authentic self. Although an artist in several traditional mediums (photography, sculpture, jewelry making, writing), Diana considered sensuality to be her greatest art. Her hope was to channel a lifetime of triumph and suffering into her work, emotionally connecting the intersections of gender identity, sexuality, disability, feminism, and sex work, to advance understanding and empathy of the multiple forms of oppression that she and others faced. LJ seeks to honor Diana through his work in youth homelessness, as well as in his volunteerism and activism. He is most committed to affirming and empowering queer youth. By equipping young people with community support, resources, and self-advocacy tools, LJ hopes to see the eventual elimination of the many barriers that prevent queer young people from living long, whole, authentic lives. On the evening of Friday, February 3, 2017, 95-year-old Denver Beddows, and his 88-year-old wife Olive, received a visit from their son and daughter-in-law at their semi-detached home in Woolston. Denver, or Charles to those that knew him, had been struggling to care for his wife of 65 years, as she had been involved in a car accident which had left her increasingly anxious. Both her physical and mental health had been deteriorating and, in turn, this put an increasing strain on her husband.Denver’s son and his daughter-in-law left the property once they helped their father with the household chores. Less twenty-four hours later, Denver would be in police custody, and his wife would be lying in a critical condition after being attacked with a hammer.*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED AS THIS EPISODE CONTAINS ADULT THEMES AND DESCRIPTIONS THAT SOME LISTENERS MAY FIND DISTRESSING *** More information can be found on our website at http://theywalkamonguspodcast.com For early advert free access and other extras visit https://www.patreon.com/TheyWalkAmongUs MUSICOecumene Sleeps by Kai EngelLaserdisc by Chris ZabriskieLostfrevr by Ars SonorAll music sourced from http://freemusicarchive.org and used under an Attribution License - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ YOU CAN FOLLOW US VIA OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES: Twitter - https://twitter.com/TWAU_Podcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/theywalkamonguspodcast/ Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1346814312074979/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theywalkamonguspodcast/ Acast - https://www.acast.com/theywalkamongus See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This lecture continues the discussion of Collins, but also adds the thoughts of Thomas Woolston and his Discourses on the Miracles of Our Saviour. Included also are responses from Chandler and Zachary Pierce.
The Tryal of the Witnesses of the Resurrection by Thomas Sherlock is the focus of this lecture. Sherlock’s work is a thorough refutation of Woolston’s Sixth Discourse. The Tryal is in the form of a mock trial and was very popular.
