Marni welcomes the Founder of the Fioneers into the Den. Jessica is a writer, speaker, coach, and author of the award-winning personal finance lifestyle blog, The Fioneers. Her lifestyle design program helps clients discover their values, design the life they want, and attain financial freedom. Today, she shares the practices and strategies her clients use to shift their lives. Key takeaways from this episode: How to discover your values The formula for financial freedom Rediscover joy Get off auto-pilot to design the life you want You Can Have the Life You Want [2:34] Jessica describes lifestyle design as an iterative process, not a linear goal. It is the process of figuring out who you are, what you want, what your values are, and your strengths and limitations. This process allows you to dream big and then make a plan to make your dreams a reality. She shares her journey of pivoting from a job she didn't enjoy to becoming financially independent. When she started suffering emotional turmoil and panic attacks, she knew she had to leave her toxic job. Ask yourself ‘What can I get my money to do to have the life I want right now?' After ingesting as much financial information as could, Jessica realized she could use her money to live the life she wanted. You can have a lot of money or a little money and still know nothing about it. Lifestyle Design [24:11] Jessica started the process of making it a reality in her life. She took six months off from work. She removed everything from her life and then decided what she put back in. She made a financial plan and built up her emergency fund. She advises starting by asking yourself what percentage of your day or week is doing something that you love and getting off auto-pilot. We don't honor ourselves by doing the things we think we should be doing instead of what we want to be doing. Powerful tools to evoke action: Meditation practice — Journaling and Yoga are useful. Rediscover joy — Do something every day that makes you happy. Make a list of the things you eliminate from your life to make your life better. [REBROADCAST FROM AUGUST 13, 2020] One of the inequalities that this pandemic has laid bare is the fact that, for women in particular, working from home means working more and with little relief. Food writer Deb Perelman wrote a piece in The New York Times, titled "In the Covid-19 Economy, You Can Have a Kid or a Job. You Can’t Have Both," about the stresses and sticky situations this pandemic is forcing women to navigate. She joins us to talk about her experience as a working mother on lockdown, and we take listener calls sharing their own stories.
One of the inequalities that this pandemic has laid bare is the fact that, for women in particular, working from home means working more and with little relief.
In early July, Deb Perelman, the food blogger behind Smitten Kitchen and a mom of two kids, penned an op-ed for The New York Times with a provocative title about life during COVID-19: “You Can Have a Kid or a Job. You Can’t Have Both.” Perelman described the struggle of caring for children while still trying to keep up with her work, a problem ultimately “solved” when her husband was furloughed and then laid off from his job. But research shows that in the majority of American households, women have shouldered more child care during the pandemic. And for working mothers, that has meant some hard choices.According to research from Syracuse University, more than 80% of adults in the country who were not working because they were caring for children — who would be in school or daycare if not for COVID-19 — were women. A paper published in the academic journal Gender, Work & Organization found that mothers of young children reduced their working hours four to five times more than fathers, widening the gender gap in hours from 20% to 50%. Just a few months ago, women in the workforce had reached a historic milestone: excluding farm labor and self-employment, the number of women on payrolls in the United States exceeded the number of men. But now, that progress has been put on hold and is in jeopardy, according to Betsey Stevenson, professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan. “There is a rot that’s at the core of women’s employment right now, and that’s child care and elder care, and how women are going to maintain their place in the labor force when we’re really having a crisis of care in the country,” Stevenson said.Related: Israel's hurried school reopenings serve as a cautionary taleCOVID-19 has upended the “patchwork” system of care in the US — from formal programs such as schools, day cares, and summer camps, to informal solutions such as relying on relatives and friends to help out. The virus’ prevalence and way of spreading largely renders those resources unsafe.Parents and caregivers are now taking care of and entertaining their kids 24/7 — on top of working or searching for a job. These conflicting demands require all parents to make difficult choices, but it is mothers who are most frequently making career sacrifices for their children.‘Untenable’ arrangementsAlthough younger men today are much more likely to profess their belief in gender equality, they are not significantly more likely to divide most household tasks equitably, from child care to grocery shopping. Some might argue that social distancing and isolation would act as an equalizer for couples; if both parents are now home all the time, perhaps the partner who generally does less housework would start to absorb the burdens of running a household and finally do their share. However, according to Stevenson, who served as the chief economist at the US Department of Labor under former President Barack Obama, that is not always how it works out. Women often find it untenable to put off child care or housework. If the guy is driving toward the cliff of not feeding the children, and the woman is driving toward the cliff of not feeding the children, she pulls off first and she feeds the children ... and the problem is that if he knows that she’s going to pull off first, then he wins the game of chicken.Betsey Stevenson, University of Michigan professor“If the guy is driving toward the cliff of not feeding the children, and the woman is driving toward the cliff of not feeding the children, she pulls off first and she feeds the children,” she explains. “And the problem is that if he knows that she’s going to pull off first, then he wins the game of chicken.” Instead, the oversized demands on women lead to an impossible juggling act, which often forces them to cut back on their careers. The fact that women already tended to choose more flexible jobs before the pandemic facilitates this adjustment. And cutting back during the pandemic or leaving the workforce altogether can have negative consequences for gender equality in the future.‘Child care is just essential’This spring, employment rates for women fell to around where they were in the 1980s. Although they have been rising as the economy reopens, Stevenson doesn’t expect an immediate rebound and warns that the impact of this setback will be far-reaching.Taking time off from work now puts future promotions and jobs in jeopardy. “[Fewer hours] will then reduce [women’s] earnings as a share of the household income, which will make them a less important labor market player in their household,” Stevenson explains. According to Stevenson, one of the main drivers for greater household equality in the past has been increasingly comparable incomes between men and women. If men make much more money, it makes more sense to prioritize their jobs over their spouses’ when it comes to figuring out child care and housework.Related: Why do so few women work (for pay) in Jordan? However, Stevenson suggests that the spotlight placed on childcare by the pandemic has the potential to lead to lasting change. “We’ve revealed that child care is just essential for just a giant share of the workforce, and to just ignore it and keep pretending it’s just a personal problem is a mistake in thinking about the macro economy.” This summer marks 100 years since the 19th Amendment was ratified, guaranteeing women the right to vote in the US. There’s still a long way to go to achieve equality though, and Stevenson urges Americans to use this opportunity to reimagine the post-COVID-19 balance between work and care.“What does a world look like where we make space for people to do the caregiving they need to do and move seamlessly back into their career?” Stevenson asked. “If you don’t lean in the whole time, you don’t make it to the top. But leaning in is really, really hard if you want to take time to really engage with your children. And that’s true for men and for women, and so we just need a very different conversation about, what does life look like when you make space for both?”Teresa Lawlor is an intern at Innovation Hub. Even the cheeriest and sunniest of parents are hitting the wall. We're over it. This stinks. Even the most ‘We’ll make a fun obstacle course in the yard!’ moms are suddenly thinking ‘No. NO. I don't want to do this anymore.’” Somehow we've traveled past denial, to bargaining, then circled back to anger, without seeing so much of the acceptance part. That’s life on the coronacoaster. We think this is particularly hard for parents, because we have to hold together some semblance of certainty for our kids that everything's going to be fine amidst our own complete uncertainty. Saying "you don't have to be scared" even when we feel scared. Taking on the anxiety and frustration and boredom and irritation of our littles when we haven’t worked out our own. We don’t have a ton of solutions this week, but we review some rules for zen living and figure out how we might do those a bit more. In the meantime, knowing we’re not alone in feeling this way definitely helps. As schools across the nation announce plans for distance learning or part-time attendance in the fall, working parents seem to not be factored into the equation. Smitten Kitchen's food writer Deb Perleman voices the scream we've all been holding inside in her New York Times story, "In the Covid-19 Economy, You Can Have a Kid or a Job. You Can’t Have Both."Thanks to Deb Perelman for permission to quote this excellent story, which I highly recommend you read here--whether or not you have kids. This week Shelter in Place will conclude season 1 at episode 100 this Thursday. You Can Have it All, Just Not at the Same Time (LA 1150) Transcript: Steven Butala: Steven and Jill here. Jill DeWit: Hello. Steven Butala: Welcome to the Land Academy Show, entertaining land investment talk. I'm Steven Jack Butala. Jill DeWit: And I'm Jill Dewit, broadcasting from sunny Southern California. Steven Butala: Today, Jill and I talk about you can have it all but just not at the same time. What the heck does this mean to you? Jill DeWit: I know, it kind of sounds kind of vague, like cake and eat it too kind of thing. Steven Butala: Yeah. Well, I just think there's, timing's everything. And some people can handle a ton of, some people can ... I don't know how they can do it. They can have six kids and launch a real estate career and do great. Jill DeWit: Can they? Steven Butala: I don't know. Jill DeWit: Let's talk about it. Let's talk about it in depth. Steven Butala: Before we get into it, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the LandInvestors.com online community. It's free. Jill DeWit: Okay. Jeremy wrote, "In a recent, Would You Do This Deal, Steve and Jill mentioned they would like the deal better if the offer price to buy the land was lower than the mailer offer price. Wondering what type of strategy or language anyone can share about how to go back to the land owner and try to negotiate/offer a lower price for the land. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated." I've done this many times. Steven Butala: This is created for Jill, so we're going to listen to her. Jill DeWit: Yes. Steven Butala: But Would You Do This Deal is a program that we have on every Thursday for Land Academy members. I guess it's around three o'clock Pacific time, where we all get together on one webinar. We do this every week, and people submit their deals, and we all talk about it. Yeah. It's good. No, don't do it. Here's why. Jill DeWit: Right. We answer all kinds of questions and that's just one of the things that we do is Would You Do This Deal. And it's fun because then we get in, it's usually because it's someone submits that they're on the fence about it, and they want our input. Here's the property, and we look it up state, county, APN. We all look at it together because it's all visual too. And they say I've got it locked in at $3,000 let's just say. Jill DeWit: And so Steven and I will go in and look at it and go, Oh ... it's usually right away we all pull it up and we go, "Oh, we see it." If we have that reaction right away, usually it's a where's the access? What can you do with it?Because it's a slope like this. It's a 45 degree slope or something, something crazy. So what happens is, right, so we've said, "Hey, it's not a kick it to the curb, not a total pass/ however, I wouldn't pay 3000 for it. I'd pay 1500 for it, and here's why." Jill DeWit: So now Jeremy's saying, "Well this is great. Now how do I go back and do that with them?" So what we usually do is, I'll go to them with that information. I'll present an email with a picture or a map and my reasoning why like, "Hi, Mr. Smith. I know I offered 3000. Have you seen the property? Because let tell you what I'm staring at right now. I did some research, and I can tell that access is an issue, and we may or may not be build on it. Only this one area, I think I could do something with," or whatever the issues are, things like that. And then I say, "And because of all that, the best I can do is $1,500. If that doesn't work for you, I get it. But this is my best offer, based on all the information that I've now found since I sent out your offer." Jill DeWit: And that's legit. It's honest. It's real. And I obviously don't love it. That's the thing too. When you're going back with these new offers, revised offers, if you will, there's a reason for it. Because come on, let's be honest, we've all priced it pretty darn well. Jeremy, you're in our group, so I know you did your homework, and I know you came in good. If it was a beautiful,
This week I have an extraordinary woman joining me on the show, author Romi Neustadt. We're talking about the pressures women face to have it all, be it all, and do it all, and what it takes to create your own standards and boundaries you need to take your life to the next level. Talking to Romi is like being treated to a chat with your favorite, wiser sister, who can give you the kick in the butt you need but do it with so much love. Happy holidays, listeners! For this year's double feature we looked at two overtly Christmas-themed movies about that rarest of beings: the manic pixie dream BOY. The Spirit of Christmas is a Lifetime movie--you can tell because characters have heard of sex. But we're not here to take easy potshots at made-for-TV Christmas movies. We're here because Shawn has somehow never seen one. It's for SCIENCE. We actually went out to a theater to see Last Christmas, a podcast rarity! Mark talks to singer/songwriter/guitarist Kate Schutt. Originally from Pennsylvania, Kate spent time in Boston and then many years in Guelph, Ontario before settling in her current locale of NYC. A slew of great recordings make up her body of work, including "No Love Lost" (the one Shilansky is on, also Shilansky-pal Dave Jamrog, w/string arrangements by Jeff Louie and a special appearance by Toni Lynn Washington), and "The Telephone Game," (featuring Orrin Evans, Terri Lynn Carrington, John Ellis) a project made in conjunction with the innovative Artistshare label. Kate and Mark talk about all this, as well as studying Chinese, why someone would bail on Harvard to go to Berklee (!!?), the life of a self-managing/producing artist, and much more. If you've heard other interviews with Kate (she has been making some major waves in the industry, including being featured on NPR's "Song of the Day"), this one is different, because in this one Kate addresses how she "left it all behind" and dropped out of the biz for a significant period of time, to do volunteer work, and she discusses this in moving detail. Songs include: "The Moon Got Broken", "Our Legs are Burning," "Glamorous Life" (a Sheila E cover!), "You Can Have the Sky," and "Raining."
In this episode, Rev Ike ( http://www.scienceoflivingonline.com ) narrates to us a story of affirmation and success. And through this story, he elaborates on how to manifest and bring out our inner aspirations and the good we desire. According to Rev Ike, what a man thinks, he becomes. For this reason, he highlights the power of feelings, beliefs, and the significance of self-affirmation. So go around feeling, thinking, and acting like you are who you want to be. Affirm and claim, “Yes! I am that I am.” In sum, he shows us that even the wrong person can get the proper blessing if they make themselves feel right. As the Book of Proverbs states, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” In the same way, with our thoughts and beliefs, we make our world. Source: Rev. Ike: "If You Can FEEL it, You Can HAVE it!"
