The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Mark Webber has been with Pulp for so long that his story and the group’s are almost the same thing. He started out as a teenager in Chesterfield with a fanzine called Cosmic Pig, booked Pulp at the local Conservative Club in 1986, became their tour manager with his dad’s old briefcase, and eventually found himself on stage with a Stylophone. Jason Barnard takes him through it all: the years of playing to twenty people outside Sheffield, the last minute Glastonbury headline, the Brit Awards controversy, recording Different Class,This Is Hardcore, Scott Walker producing We Love Life, and the chilly end in Rotherham in December 2002. Then there’s the return. The 2023 shows that were supposed to be just fourteen nights, More recorded in three weeks on a tight budget, and Mark’s daughter finally getting to see him play. Recorded live at The CAT Club on 23 October 2025. The audio is recovered and a bit muddy, but worth the effort. Twice Grammy-nominated, Mercury Prize and BRIT Award-winning artist, Arlo Parks returns to SHEROES this week to discuss her recently released third album, Ambiguous Desire, which was born of time spent diving into the club scene and learning to DJ, creating space to get out of her head and connect with her body, and the rich histories of club spaces that became sanctuaries for so many.
People of the world, dip up your life! Hop on the double decker bus with Sarah and Lauren for some girl power...the Spice Girls that is! Mel C, Geri, Emma, Mel B and Victoria otherwise known as Sporty, Ginger, Baby, Scary and Posh were a true cultural sensation of the 1990's. Formed in 1994, this 5-piece smashed all norms for girl groups and received five Brit Awards, three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards, one MTV Video Music Award and three World Music Awards before Geri (Ginger) left the group in late 1998. They outsold Prodigy and Oasis to become the highest earning UK music group of the 90's, and they are the highest selling girl group of all time with over 100 million international album sales. This week, the Dipperz stick to some classics, chatting about the "Wannabe" music video and "Spice World" (1997) which took in more than 100 million dollars in worldwide box office earnings. Love 'em or hate 'em, that's some real GIRL POWER! (P.S. the Dipperz love 'em!)

Kate Nash is one of the most interesting artists working in British and Irish music right now. You might know her from 'Foundations', the debut single that went to number one in the UK in 2007, or maybe winning a BRIT Award for Best Female Artist in 2008 or the excellent Netflix TV show GLOW on Netflix about female wrestlers. But the Kate Nash of the last few years is an advocate for artists who kicks against the pricks of the music industry and the world at large. In the last couple of years alone she has given testimony before a UK parliamentary select committee about the economics of touring, losing £26,000 on a European tour leg and covering those losses by selling photos of her arse on OnlyFans. She's travelled around London on a fire engine visiting the offices of Live Nation and Spotify as part of her Butts for Tour Buses campaign. She is a patron of the Music Venue Trust speaking up for grassroots venues. She's been one of the founding members of the Featured Artists Coalition since 2009. She played the Trans Mission show at Wembley. She's been to Leinster House. She also released trans ally anthem 'GERM'. Nash grew up in North Harrow going to Irish dancing at weekends, listening to Christy Moore and the Dubliners at home, spending summers in Ireland. Last month, Nialler9 debuted her cover of Sinead O'Connor's Famine - a song that serves as an introduction to her dual Irish English heritage. So there is a lot to talk to Kate Nash about. Dermot O'Leary has been such a constant in British life for years now, from hosting The X Factor, to his Friday slot on This Morning, to his weekend shows on BBC Radio 2.He's had this really varied career - presenting everything from major live events like the Brit Awards and BAFTAs, to documentaries, and his more recent travel and food series Taste of Ireland with Dermot O'Leary on ITV, which is back for a second season. What I loved about this conversation is how much of his life has been shaped by travel. He grew up in an Irish family, going back and forth between England and Ireland, with those long childhood journeys to Wexford becoming some of his earliest memories. And that sense of place, of identity, of belonging really runs through everything he talks about in this episode. So today, we're diving into the seven chapters of Dermot's travel diaries, from those childhood summers in Ireland, to travelling solo across America, winter escapes to Norway to the Italian region that's completely stolen his heart.Holly's Destination Recap:- Priesteregg Resort, Leogang, Austria Dermot's Destination Recap: Soneva Fushi, MaldivesWexford, IrelandCurracloe Beach, IrelandCahore, IrelandSt Davids, United KingdomFishguard, United KingdomDordogne, FranceAtlantic Coast France, FranceNorfolk, United KingdomBodrum, TurkeyDonegal, IrelandSligo, IrelandCauseway Coastal Route, United KingdomBallycastle, United KingdomPortrush, United KingdomPortstewart, United KingdomDerry, United KingdomColeraine, United KingdomNew York City, United StatesWashington DC, United StatesNew Orleans, United StatesLos Angeles, United StatesHermosa Beach, United StatesSeattle, United StatesPuglia, ItalySalento, ItalyOslo, NorwayBygdøy, NorwayLofoten Islands, NorwayBergen, NorwayKirkenes, NorwayPrague, Czech RepublicJapan, JapanSouth Korea, South KoreaNew England, United StatesMaine, United StatesDERMOT O'LEARY'S TASTE OF IRELAND kicks off on Saturday 2nd May on ITV 1 and ITVX, in partnership with Tourism Ireland With thanks to…Citalia - Discover the real Italy with Citalia, the UK's leading Italian holiday specialists. pWotD Episode 3281: Michael Jackson Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 339,354 views on Sunday, 26 April 2026 our article of the day is Michael Jackson.Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and philanthropist. Dubbed the "King of Pop", he is widely regarded as one of the most culturally significant figures of the 20th century. Over a four-decade career, his musical achievements broke American racial barriers and made him a dominant figure worldwide. Through his songs, concerts, and fashion, he proliferated visual performance for artists in popular music, popularizing street dance moves such as the moonwalk, the robot, and the anti-gravity lean. Jackson is often deemed the greatest entertainer of all time. The eighth child of the Jackson family, Jackson made his public debut at age six as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, one of Motown's most successful acts. He rose to solo stardom with the album Off the Wall (1979) and achieved unprecedented global success with Thriller (1982), the best-selling album in history. Its short film-style music videos for "Thriller", "Beat It", and "Billie Jean" redefined the medium as an art form. Jackson followed it with Bad (1987), the first album to produce five US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror", and "Dirty Diana". His albums Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995) spawned the respective US number-one singles "Black or White" and "You Are Not Alone"; the latter was the first song to debut atop the Hot 100. Jackson's final album, Invincible (2001), is the most expensive ever made. From the mid-1980s, Jackson came under public scrutiny due to changes in his appearance, relationships, behavior, and lifestyle. He was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy in 1993. The case was settled out of court during 1994, and Jackson was not indicted due to lack of evidence. In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted of child sexual abuse and other charges. During 2009, while preparing for This Is It, a series of comeback concerts, he died from an overdose of propofol administered by his personal physician Conrad Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011. Jackson's death triggered global reactions, creating unprecedented surges of Internet traffic and a spike in his music sales. His televised memorial service, held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, is estimated to have been viewed by more than 2.5 billion people.Jackson is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated sales of over 500 million records as a solo artist. He is also—along with Paul McCartney and Phil Collins—one of three recording artists to have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band. He holds a joint-record for a male solo artist with 13 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles and is the only artist to have a top-ten single in six decades. One of the most-awarded music artists in history, Jackson received 13 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Legend Award, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; 26 American Music Awards; 12 World Music Awards; 8 MTV Video Music Awards; 6 Brit Awards; and 3 presidential honors. He was inducted into numerous halls of fame, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Dance Hall of Fame. Having donated an estimated $500 million, Jackson is credited with setting a standard for celebrity charity. In 2024, half of his music catalogue was sold to Sony for $600 million, the largest music acquisition for a single artist. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:36 UTC on Monday, 27 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Michael Jackson on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Jasmine.

What a non-award-winning episode! Yes, you read the title right. Zacky Vengeance is up first to discuss his solo record, Dark Horse, which drops on April 3rd. The first song he released from it is called Lighthouse. He talks about that song and the rest of the album. He speaks to how different it is from the material from A7X. We discuss the writing process and how he played, according to him, about 95% of the instruments on the album. He told me what's going on with the band, some surprising announcements coming up, and more. Detroit drummer Tommy Clufetos is up next. He's bringing his band, Tommy's Rocktrip, to The Token Lounge on April 23rd. We discuss that, playing the Brit Awards show in tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, the Detroit grind he's got in him, and lots more. Mike Krompass from the band The Fell wraps up this episode. We discuss their tour, which comes to the Token Lounge on Saturday, March 28th, playing with Billy Sheehan, material in the can, and more. Swing it, shake it, move it, make it!…is exactly what the nation was doing in 1997. Yes, that's right, Channel 5 was here and fiddling with that aerial to try and get a reception to see The Jack Docherty Show was what we were all up to. Robbie Williams even changed the lyrics to his breakout hit ‘Old Before I Die' in honour of this revolutionary fifth channel twiddlesome pastime. But of course this was but a fuzzy, interference-driven distraction compared to what was going on in, what the kids were still calling, ‘The Charts'. And OF COURSE the aforementioned lyrics were from the FOURTH NO1 in a row from those Spice Girls (AND it was a double A-Side, Mama!). That's right we were gripped by Geri's Brit Awards conquering Union Jack dress (for the correct reasons, flag waving nonces), but the girls were proving to be more popular than Swampy's tenancy under the A30 (another one for there kids) with En Vogue, Eternal, Ultra Naté, Gwen Stefani and a host of others reigning supreme in the hit parade. And there was so much more. As we see as we take out our CDs (possibly trapped in a broken 90s case) from summer 97's NOW 37!!Pop was back, Back, BACKSTREET! (Really?!? - Ed)Everyone's favourite sunshine trio Hanson were MMMBop-ping (!), Backstreet Boys were taking their shirts off (!!) No Mercy were taking a break from their restaurant shifts (possibly) and George Michael was, as always, just being incredible. However, HOWEVER…Over on CD2, there was - an identity. Britpop was either clinging on by its bitten and possibly chipped fingernails, recycling some flat champagne from their first album, staring at the sun (checks notes, avoids further U2 puns) or - more interestingly - evolving. And, boy, there were quite the classic run of tracks as The Verve, Supergrass, blur, The Seahorses and Radiohead provided some iconic memories. No Gallagher brothers on NOW37? No fear!(Actually, I think you'll find they were gearing up for the autumn release of Be Here Now, but the less said etc…)And joining me on this golden revisit of the pop landscape of NOW37 and providing more memories than a hungover Labour MP on the 2nd of May is writer, comic and all round 90s pop kid Marc Burrows. As his (quite wonderful) Britpop stand up show tours the nation, discover which compilation started Marc's musical journey, marvel at how a power chord changed his life, ruminate at what ‘indie through the sausage machine' sounds like, consider why we're picturing The Outhere Brothers and The Vengaboys on the A52 somewhere near Mablethorpe, revel in the NME review of Paranoid Android (it's worth waiting for) and nod your head knowingly as we explore why the Britpop party ending maybe wasn't such a bad thing. No, turn the aerial the other way - I think I can start to see something that may be Family Affairs. Or is it Milkshake Monkey..? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Robbie Williams has set the record for the most number one albums for a solo artist in the UK, the most BRIT Awards, and the biggest solo show in British history. How did he do it? That's what music industry commentator Marty Jones joins Jesse to explain.

The performance transformed into a full rave explosion: heavy synths, strobe lights, electronic beats, head-banging choreography, and an intense dance breakdown—blending symphonic drama, theatrical avant-garde, and underground club energy. This genre-bending spectacle followed Rosalía's win for Best International Artist, defeating Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, Tyler, The Creator, Chappell Roan, and others—marking her as the first Spanish artist to claim a BRIT Award and a milestone for non-English-language music. Her acceptance speech emphasized celebrating otherness, cultural exchange, artistic freedom, and representation, quoting: “Let's keep celebrating different music, different cultures and different languages.”Lux, an ambitious 15-track opus spanning 13 languages with flamenco roots, experimental pop, orchestral elements (including London Symphony Orchestra), and electronic layers, set the stage for her upcoming Lux World Tour starting March 16, 2026, in Lyon, France—42 arena shows across 17 countries in Europe, North America, and South America.“Berghain,” despite the Berlin nightclub reference, explores inner psychological forests, darkness vs. light duality, moral ambiguity, and the artist's journey beside shadows for deeper understanding. The performance ignited viral buzz, critical acclaim as one of the most innovative BRIT moments, and tour hype—positioning Rosalía as a global cultural architect reshaping pop spectacle through fearless, high-art-to-rave fusions.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Grammy®-nominated, BRIT Award-winning, Scottish singer songwriter KT Tunstall graces this week's podcast to introduce us to her growing pack of dogs. Her current dog family started with Mini, a 7 year old miniature Pinscher who famously introduced KT to her future husband Chris who was at a dog park with Nova, a 5 year old half Husky, half Eskimo dog. From there they got KT's dream dog Flow, a 2.5 year old Irish Wolfhound, Bran an 8 month old Wolfhound, and charming his way into the family from a neighbors is a Red Heeler appropriately named Otis Reddish. With five dogs comes plenty of stories and insights we were more than happy to be an audience for.You can find KT on the road this week playing a four night stand at the Egyptian Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah from March 4th through the 7th. Dave Stewart is a true music icon. Born in Sunderland in 1952 his first love affair was with football – dreaming of a career playing for the Black Cats, but a knee injury and his parents' divorce changed his entire outlook. Music filled a hole - despite a music teacher who described his dreams as ‘idiotic' it became his passion, inspired by his Dad's high-tech (for the 70s!) stereo system, a Robert Johnson blues album and some eye-opening teenage experimentation with acid.He signed to Elton John's record label shortly after leaving school and after several false starts he met Annie Lennox in 1976 and formed a band together called The Tourists – a pre-curser to the significantly more successful 80s project The Eurythmics .In the 45 years since then Dave has done it all – as an artist he's a Grammy winner, as a producer he's won multiple Brit Awards, as a song-writer he's won the prestigious Silver Clef award, he's won a Golden Glove for composing a song with Mick Jagger for Alfie and in 2024 he teamed up with Joss Stone to write a musical version of The Time Traveller's Wife. It's hard to put his contribution to music into context because his impact on popular music is so vast.Let me list just SOME of the artists he's produced, written for or recorded with:Paul McCartney, Bono, Aretha Franklin, Alison Moyet, Bryan Ferry, Sinead O'Connor, No Doubt, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Geldoff, Bryan Ferry, & Stevie Nicks. In fact in 2011 he briefly formed a supergroup comprised of himself, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R. Rahman. He's one of the great innovators – in 1998 his album SlyFi became the first album to be released on the internet – it predates Google, and MySpace and Facebook wouldn't be launched for another SEVEN years. Now in his early 70s he continues to inspire – until Covid he owned and ran a creative members club in London, and through his production company Dave Stewart Entertainment he continues to push musical boundaries and work with some of the world's biggest names in music.Enjoy our chat with an icon. Cheers! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KIn this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz explores the artist background of Tame Impala, the psychedelic rock/psych-pop project led by Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker. Since 2008, Parker has written, produced, and performed most material solo under the Tame Impala moniker. The sound evolution traces from garage-psych roots on Innerspeaker (2010), to polished pop-infused textures on Currents (2015), groove/pop hybridization on The Slow Rush (2020), and the latest genre blend of psychedelic, disco, house, and pop on Deadbeat, released October 17, 2025. Deadbeat debuted at #4 on Billboard 200, #4 on Official U.K. Albums Chart, and #2 on ARIA Chart.Tame Impala boasts numerous Grammys, ARIA, APRA Awards, and one BRIT Award, with massive streaming success—e.g., “The Less I Know the Better” exceeding 2.2B Spotify streams—yet waited nearly two decades for a first Hot 100 entry.Focus shifts to standout single “Dracula,” released September 26, 2025, as the third from Deadbeat. This third single delivers a bouncy, disco-leaning groove with a “party-until-dawn” narrative using vampire metaphors for nightlife embrace. Praised for its infectious groove, earworm chorus, and Halloween-adjacent energy, it drew mixed reviews (e.g., Medium 6.5/10) but strong community response in outlets like Atwood Magazine.“Dracula” marked Tame Impala's breakthrough: first Billboard Hot 100 entry debuting at #55 (October 2025), peaking at #30; #1 on Alternative Airplay (January 2026, returned #1 February 7 chart); #2 Adult Alternative Airplay; #23 Rock & Alternative Airplay. It ranked #3 in Triple J Hottest 100 (2025), amassed ~221M Spotify streams by February 2026, with debut week U.S. metrics of 6.5M streams, 1.7M radio impressions, and 1K digital sales. It peaked Top 40 on UK Singles Chart over 16 weeks. An early February 2026 remix featuring BLACKPINK's JENNIE added new vocal layers, verse content, and lyric nods to Parker, blending K-pop with psych-pop. Released post-Parker's JENNIE merch sighting at the February 1, 2026 Grammys—where Tame Impala won Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “End Of Summer” (second consecutive in category)—the remix boosted visibility, demographic reach, and chart momentum, sparking follow-up Hot 100 entries like “Loser” (#91) and “My Old Ways” (#56).Analytic Dreamz analyzes “Dracula” as a streaming-driven radio crossover, U.S. chart gateway, and cross-genre platform linking psych-pop and K-pop ecosystems, reinforcing Parker's hybrid legacy amid a 2026 European tour (April 4–May 13, covering major markets like Madrid, Paris, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Dublin).Tune in for in-depth insights on Tame Impala's evolution, breakthrough success, and strategic significance in modern music.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
