In our last conversation with Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett [Where emotions come from (and why it matters) Part 1] a couple of weeks ago we looked at her theory of where emotions originate. This has important implications for things like: How our 'body budgets' affect our feelings How we make meaning from our feelings so our internal experience makes sense That we don't always understand other people's feelings very well! The introduction to the theory plus the conversation plus the take-home messages would have made for an unwieldy episode, so I split it in half. Mótið er handan við hornið og Vængjum Þöndum tók á loft í Toggastofu með þá Andra Adolphson og Arnór Smárason enda er fyrsti leikurinn gegn ÍA á föstudag. Báðir þekkja vel til á Skaganum. Andri flutti ungur að árum upp á Skipaskaga og Arnór er uppalinn þar á bæ. Andri er að koma til baka eftir erfið meiðsli og Arnór er að verða klappaður og klár eftir að hafa verið lengi frá. Þeir fóru aðeins yfir sviðið, komandi tímabil, meiðslin og markmiðin. Í lokin kom svo Tómas Þór, ritstjóri enska boltans á Íslandi og einhver fróðasti maður landsins þegar kemur að íslenskum fótbolta. Hann er hafsjór af fróðleik enda eiginlegur tengdasonur Vals. Þetta var rúmur klukkutími og við skemmtum okkur vel við gerð þáttarins og vonandi skilar það sér í ykkar eyru. Sjáumst svo vonandi sem flest á föstudag!

Abstract: Mapping the causal effects of one brain region on another (effective connectivity) is a challenging problem in neuroscience, since it requires invasive direct manipulation of brain function, together with whole-brain measurement of the effects produced. Here we establish a unique resource and present data from 26 human patients who underwent electrical stimulation during functional magnetic resonance imaging (es-fMRI). The patients had medically refractory epilepsy requiring surgically implanted intracranial electrodes in cortical and subcortical locations. One or multiple contacts on these electrodes were stimulated while simultaneously recording BOLD-fMRI activity in a block design. Multiple runs exist for patients with different stimulation sites. We describe the resource, data collection process, preprocessing using the fMRIPrep analysis pipeline and management of artifacts, and provide end-user analyses to visualize distal brain activation produced by site-specific electrical stimulation. The data are organized according to the brain imaging data structure (BIDS) specification, and are available for analysis or future dataset contributions on openneuro.org including both raw and preprocessed data. Dr. Ralph Adolphs is the Bren Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and Professor of Biology at the California Institute of Technology. He received his PhD in Neurobiology from Caltech and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Iowa. Ralph is here with us today to tell us about his journey through life and science.

Harold Paul Adolph was born in China to an American medical missionary physician and wife servingwith China Inland Mission. Dr. Adolph received his M.D. in 1958 from the University Of PennsylvaniaCollege Of Medicine, completed a general surgery residency in the Canal Zone of Panama and thenserved one term in the Navy. In 1966 h and his wife Bonnie with their two children moved to Ethiopia asmissionaries with SIM, Int.He and his family have experienced just about everything you could imagine in their lives of servicein medical missions. Dr. Adolph has authored 5 books with the latest entitled “Today’s Decision –Tomorrow’s Destiny”. After retiring the Adolphs envisioned building a new hospital in SouthernEthiopia! Today this hospital is part of the Pan-African College of Christian Surgeons, an outstandingprogram for the training of Christian African doctors as surgeons for service in mission hospitals.Though his career, Dr. Adolph has become an amazing teller of the stories of medical missions. Thissession will be informal and will be moderated by Dr. Daniel Tolan, Associate Director of CMDA’s Centerfor Medical Missions.This will be an informal session in which questions may be asked and stories will give the answer.
