This week I sat down with Dr. Jeff Morris, immediate past Director of EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT), the EPA office that regulates industrial chemicals.  Jeff is now a principal of Jeff Morris Solutions LLC, a consulting firm helping entities navigate the complexities of industrial chemical regulation.  While at EPA, Jeff directed the Agency’s implementation of the 2016 amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the U.S. law regulating industrial chemicals, and headed the office most immediately impacted by the significant changes brought about by the Lautenberg amendments. In our discussion, we look back on Jeff’s leadership of the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics and its accomplishments in implementing Lautenberg, which policies the current Administration has implemented that should continue, and how the new Administration should and can do more using TSCA to address social inequities and achieve the goals of environmental justice.  Jeff discusses his recent articles on this important topic, as well as the important role international collaboration plays in understanding both the commercial promise and chemical profile of nanomaterials. Episode 43 – Much Ado About Malbec Pete and VinoMike are ready to talk Malbec! This is one of the most popular grape varietals out there, but that’s a relatively new phenomenon. How did we get from an obscure grape that was used mostly for blending in France to a powerhouse red from Argentina? The guys will walk you through the history and how they came to love the grape. After the history and regional lessons, VinoMike shares that he is drinking a 2013 Colomé “Altura Máxima” Malbec. This is from the highest elevations in Argentina, and they claim the world, for wine production. This bottle shows off the rugged and ageable side of Argentine Malbec. A gift to VinoMike from some dear friends, this is a special bottle in several ways. Pete breaks open something for everyday drinking – the 2018 Catena Malbec. This wine is usually $15 to $20. It comes from a trio of high mountain vineyards (3,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level) and is an outstanding value. Although this wine can age for a decade, it is really made to be consumed young. Spielberg’s second film was intended to be his motion picture debut, a passion project of his since making an adolescent film in the mid-60’s. In many ways, it’s his personal love letter to sci-fi, and there are moment of sublime beauty and awe in this film. You could probably just watch the last 35 minutes of the movie showing the moment where humans make contact with alien life, and leave a movie theater buzzing with joy. Except there’s an hour-and-a-half of movie before it, and that movie is pretty hit or miss. Steven has no lack of vision, it’s fair to say, but if there’s anything to learn from this film, it’s that Spielberg should stay away from writing movies, and that every director needs to take a couple months away from a film before trying to edit. Add to that technical complications completely unforeseen because, well, they were literally remaking the rules of cinema, and you’ve got one heck of a technical achievement that winds up being a bit of a bore. But wow, those effects - they’re well worth the ride. This was a fun podcast for me, as all are actually. I love Steve McQueen and its truly in his words. Hundreds of quotes with never before seen photos of the cool dude Steve. Marshall has written a couple books on Steve but this gets you right into Steve's head. His rough childhood, becoming an actor, loving riding his motorcycles and racing. He was a self admitted chauvinist and we get a peak into his three marriages. WE also see Steve in his final battle against cancer, after he was told nothing could be done, he went to Mexico to try the controversial treatment of laetrile. Steve died in a little filthy looking room in Mexico seventeen hours after a massive surgery. It is an emotional look at Steve. He was no saint. Typically, authors write books with the hope that their words will live in perpetuity. Texts that will be read and analyzed for decades to come. But in July of 2020, best-selling author Jennifer Serravallo began writing a book that she hoped would have a short shelf life. Her new book would be packed full of strategies for learning virtually. In one intense month, Serravallo and a small team at Heinemann wrote and published "Connecting Students Online." The objective was to create a tool for teachers working through the COVID-19 pandemic. If all goes according to plan, Serravallo's book will act as a bridge to get educators through this school year. Scientists will then deliver a vaccine, and we all return to the classroom sooner rather than later. Serravallo is no stranger to teachers. She's guided thousands of educators with "The Reading Strategies Book," "The Writing Strategies Book," and "Understanding Texts and Readers." "Connecting Students Online" was sparked by Serravallo churning out ideas on her Facebook Group in the Spring of 2020. "Here's an idea for scheduling, here's an idea for keeping your lessons brief, here's an idea for conferring with kids," Serravallo would post in the group. "I was also getting a lot of feedback from teachers in that group." At the time, it didn't occur to her to put all these ideas in a book, but in late July, she polled her Facebook group about how she could help. In just a few hours, thousands of educators responded. They needed more strategies for teaching remotely -- "Connecting Students Online, Strategies for Remote Teaching and Learning" was born. As each episode progressed, we have found ourselves more and more delving into the businesses that are making the impact in creating sustainability. Because of this, instead of looking at the consumer perspective, we are shifting our goal to the perspective of businesses and how they are scaling sustainability. Episode 42 – It’s a Piedmont Party! (With an Offer You Can’t Refuse) Pete and VinoMike are back after a week off due to, well, 2020. This year is all about adapting and the guys are giving it their best shot. Once again, they are forced to record from separate studios. There were only a few tears shed before the recording began. To ease the burden, your hosts each pop a bottle from their favorite wine region – Piedmont! VinoMike starts it off with a beautiful bottle of Barbaresco from Beivuma. The 2016 Beivuma “Valeirano” Barbaresco. This private label comes from the Ada Nada winery, one of the absolute gems of Barbaresco. It is a single-vineyard offering that offers insane value. There are only a few others making wine from this vineyard and those bottles go for upwards of $100 a bottle, and as much as $200. This one? About $43. If you can get it, buy it! (Reach out to your hosts and they will see if they can help.) The guys wax poetic about truffles during this segment. There is nothing – NOTHING – like Nebbiolo and truffles. If you have never tried this pairing, now is the time. (And there is a special offer below to help you if you live in IL.) Next up, Pete also chooses a Barbera d’Alba from Ghiomo. The 2018 Ghiomo “Lavai” Barbera d’Alba is absolutely delicious and a perfect choice for your Thanksgiving table. Much softer and approachable than the young Nebbiolo VinoMike had in his glass. Both wines definitely offer pure joy and are worth seeking out. Pete and VinoMike finish up the show talking about the first offer of wines from Wines On The Bluff. This is a new project from Thad Morrow and features wines from their friend, Paolo at Beivuma. They are currently shipping to IL.
