Should we even live in a world where we have to say Predator 1? Speaking of out of this world, the villain in our punishment film, 1990s I Come In Peace (Dark Angel), repeats the title throughout the movie, a movie we talk about for so long in the intro to this episode, it made the marquee. Lee and Daniel decided to go deep (well, as deep as a Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer production can get), both literally and figuratively, as they tackle the epic shouty men on a submarine film, "Crimson Tide" (1995), directed by Tony Scott, and starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman as said shouty men. Has the threat of nuclear war ever been more dumb and full of cum? Was Tarantino punching this stuff up needed? The hosts also cover what they've watched as of late. The TV show Severance debuted on Apple TV+ in February 2022. It was created by writer Dan Erickson, and developed into a series by director and executive producer Ben Stiller. He directed the pilot and most of the episodes. After the first season came out, Severance was nominated for 14 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, and it won two Emmys: for Main Title Design and for Musical Composition. I love this show, and the main title sequence is incredible. I was so excited to get to talk to the composer, Theodore Shapiro, about how he made the main title theme music. In this episode, you'll hear how that theme first came into existence in a totally different form, and then, how Teddy re-imagined it to become the final version. For more, visit songexploder.net/severance.

The Last of Us (Playstation, 2013). CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of deafness, blindness, ableism. If you've ever done theater, and we definitely have, you dread the thought of having to deal with anything related to this movie and this story. And you'd be right to, because all too often we tell a sanitized, ableist, overacted retelling of a very real story: the breakthrough Annie Sullivan had teaching her student Helen Keller to communicate. So you'll have to pardon our shock while watching the original film adaptation of the Broadway success, and finding it's in fact a brilliant film. Director Arthur Penn is brilliant in adapting his own stage production by showing and not telling, a move that seems impossible for most stage to screen adaptations. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, reprising their roles from Broadway, are absolutely phenomenal. And sure, the supporting cast might as well be cardboard cutouts, but it doesn't matter when you've got a film as compellingly made as this one. CONTENT WARNING: imprisonment, solitary confinement, murder, homosexuality. The duds just keep on coming this week as a movie about one of America's most dangerous (and quirky) prisoners just collapses under its own weight. Many times we celebrate directors and casts who deeply care about their subject. In this case, it somehow makes the whole experience worse, mostly because it commits the cardinal sin of being boring. It's not the worst movie we've ever seen, but it's a real drag to sit through. Oscars ‘62 continues as we talk about Birdman of Alcatraz onMacintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?!

We keep our Oscars series rolling and well, things have been rough to start. You'd think with a musical as culturally significant and iconic as this one that the movies would have done it up for fun. Sadly, this is an incredibly BORING movie. Sure, Robert Preston is incredible, and sure, the songs are fun, but after the 3rd of 17 dance breaks, you start to realize that our director just barely made a movie. They might as well have filmed the stage production and screened that instead for as much money as they sunk into this. This month Lee takes a look at music from films about possibly the world's most famous cryptid, the Sasquatch - or as it/they are better known in pop and general culture: Bigfoot. There are just so many films, especially in the last thirty years or so, that the list is focused on the real peak period of interest, the 1970s and 1980s. Even then this list threatened to be much larger than it ended up being, but a lot of the music was impossible to source. Still, Lee feels this list is large enough to pay proper tribute to that mythical(?) hairy giant in the woods. --Main Theme from "Bigfoot" (1970) --Richard Podolor --The Legend of Boggy Creek from "The Legend of Boggy Creek" (1972) --Chuck Bryant & Earl E. This week on Rodes Live we talk about qualities are not talents in the traditional sense, but they are essential for personal growth, building meaningful relationships, and contributing to a more harmonious and compassionate world. The thing is you need absolutely "ZERO" talent to achieve progress. Main Title instrumental will be played on this episode of Rodes Live. I also go into detail about dropping a podcast mixtape series that will be a total of 6 episodes. Tap In!!! The "Skip Intro" button first got introduced to us through Netflix in 2017, and, I know, a lot of people use it – including me. But, if I can get into old-man, back-in-my-day mode for a second, I have so much fondness for the opening theme music for so many shows. It's a chance to set the mood for everything that you're about to see. One of the intros that I never skip is the animated opening title sequence for Only Murders in the Building, which is a Hulu show that debuted in August 2021, and now is in its third season. It was created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, and it stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The three of them play neighbors who live in the same building in New York, and they're all obsessed with the same true crime podcast. And then when someone in their building gets murdered, they decide to start their own true crime podcast, and try and solve the mystery of who the killer is. For this episode, I talked to the show's composer, Siddhartha Khosla, about the show's theme music. Coming up, you'll hear a voice memo that Siddhartha recorded before he'd even heard about the show, which then led to a demo that you'll hear, and eventually, the final theme.
