In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Martin Moore-Ede. Martin is a world-leading expert on circadian clocks and how light impacts human health and has been doing this research for over 4 decades. Have you ever thought that the light you see is as important to your health as the food you eat, the water you drink, and the air you breathe. After listening to this episode, I guarantee you're going to see why it's so important and why it could be a major component to your health that you're missing out on. You're also going to have a bunch of tips and tricks on how to optimise your light exposure for the better. In this episode you can expect to learn… Why your exposure or lack of exposure to light could make you more susceptible to diseases such as cancer. Why your exposure to blue light in the evening could be the reason you're always craving food as you settle down at night. Along with how you can get the maximum benefits of light with minimal changes that you can make today. Carl visits the Museum of the City of New York where he's joined by Collections Manager for Costumes and Textiles, Elizabeth Randolph, to discuss the famous dress Alice Vanderbilt wore to her sister-in-law Alva'a ball, while inspecting the original dress itself. On the evening of March 26, 1883, Alva Vanderbilt threw her famous costume ball to officially open her new "Petit Chateau" on Fifth Avenue and to secure her place in Gilded Age society. Her sister-in-law, Alice, not to be outdone, arrived at the ball and created one of the most talked about fashion statements from the Gilded Age to today. Alice had the famed British-born Parisian couturier Charles Frederick Worth design a gown that represented "electric light" - a new idea in 1883. Encrusted with gold and silver threads, Alice's gown caught the attention of not only the guests at the ball, but the press whose reports of her dress ranged from the credible to the outrageous. Jose Mora, the noted society photographer of the era, captured Alice in a famous photograph in which Alice, wearing the dress, holds a torch high above her head. Myths about the dress have circulated for years - that there was a concealed battery back in the bodice, that the dress itself somehow "lit up", and on and on. Miraculously, the original dress survives today and is in the collection of the Museum of the City of New York. With deep gratitude and thanks to the Museum, I was allowed to see the actual dress and record this interview with Elizabeth Randolph. With the dress laid out before us, we explored the story of what's true, what's not, and just what effect (both visual and social) Alice would have made wearing the dress on the night of Alva's ball.

Nissan is no stranger to battery-electric vehicles. The Nissan Leaf has been a staple of mass-market BEVs since it hit the streets in the 2010s. While the Leaf built a foundation for electric vehicles in Nissan's lineup, the company hasn't really expanded its offerings. Well, Nissan is joining the rush to EV crossovers with the 2023 Nissan Ariya. This battery-electric crossover hits the high notes you'd expect from a mass-market BEV. It's available with single and dual-motor powertrains, standard and extended-range batteries and a host of interesting interior features. The Ariya shares its CMF-EV bones with its French cousin, the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of Nissan's latest EV and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the Nissan Ariya and relays its features and how it feels. Later in the episode, Wren takes you on a live drive review of the Ariya. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the competitive set, where Nissan stands in the world of car making and the hard facts about Nissan's new EV. Closing the show, the two break down what makes the Nissan Ariya special.
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Rema (673) rules that it is preferable to light the Menorah with olive oil, since that's what was used in the Bet HaMikdash. The Rema continues and says that if one does not have olive oil, the custom among Ashkenazim is to use wax candles, because they have a nice flame. However, the Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933) rules that any type of oil is preferable to candles, since in the Bet HaMikdash the Misva was done with oil. Hacham Ovadia rules that, preferably, one should light the oil with a wick, although, the Sedeh Hemed maintained that a wick is not necessary and one may light the fuel directly. The question arises whether one may light with a Menorah using an electric light bulb, in which the electricity is the fuel (oil) and the filament is the wick. The Poskim are against it for different reasons. The Kaf HaHaim (Rav Ya'akob Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) held that it is invalid because the "flame" is contained within the bulb and fills the entire volume, it is tantamount to a "Medurah" (torch), which is invalid. Some say a Menorah must be lit with direct human action, like in the Bet HaMikdash, whereas here it is lit via a switch that allows current to flow. Hacham Bension invalidated it because there is never the requisite measure of half an hour of fuel (electricity) in one place at one time, since the current is constantly flowing into the bulb from the outside.. According to this reason, Hacham Bension (Ohr Lesion Vol. 4) would permit using a battery powered flashlight as a Chanukah light with a Beracha, since the proper measure of electric fuel is already collected inside. Theoretically, a person could line up eight flashlights on the eighth night and turn them on to fulfil the Misva. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rav Elyashiv agree with Hacham Bension's Hidush. Hacham Ovadia questions this leniency and rules that one should never make a Beracha on a flashlight. Moreover, if one did light with a flashlight and then had the opportunity to light with candles, he must do so and recite a Beracha. The Halacha is in accordance with Hacham Ovadia, because "Safek Berachot L'Hakel"-refrain from reciting Berachot when in doubt. Therefore, if a person has no way to light candles, for example when on a plane, he should turn on a battery powered flashlight without a Beracha.----Since the Misva is to light olive oil with a wick, Hacham Bension discusses whether one may light a wax covered wick, which is stuck though the floating cork disc. Is it a problem that the first moment of lighting is on the wax and not on the olive oil? Does this forfeit the advantage of using olive oil, since the moment of lighting is the execution of the Misva? Hacham Bension entertains the possibility of taking the wax off or dipping it in oil. However, he concluded that this is not necessary, since it burns off immediately and the primary source of the flame is oil.----On all nights of Chanukah one may use inferior wicks and oil for the actual Chanukah lights. Even if the flame flickers and does not catch well, there is no problem. On a weeknight there is no problem, since "Kavtah En Zakuk Lah"-if the candle is extinguished, he is not obligated to go back and relight it. Therefore, he does not have to be so careful to have a candle that lasts. Even on Shabbat, there is no concern that one may adjust a flickering wick. Since it is prohibited to derive benefit from the candle, he has no use for the flame and will not care if it flickers. However, on Shabbat, one must insure that for the Shamush candle he uses only superior wicks and oil that have a steady flame. The whole point of the Shamush is to have a candle from which to benefit, and therefore it must be a steady flame, so that he does not come to tamper with the flame on Shabbat. This is an interesting case in which the Shamush candle has more stringencies than the actual Misva candles.SUMMARYWhen it is not possible to light a candle, on may use a battery operated flashlight for Chanukah lighting, without a Beracha. There is no problem using a wax-covered wick, even if one uses olive oil for his candles. When lighting the Chanukah candles for Shabbat, the Shamush candle must have superior wicks and oil, even though the actual candles for the Misva do not.

“I have got so much to do and life is so short, I am going to hustle.” This is the story of trial and error, of determination, and science merging with business. Electric lights have been around since the early 1800s. Unfortunately, they've also been impractical. The energy it takes to operate an arc light makes it little more than a novelty. Likewise, newer lights called “incandescents” burn out far too quickly to be of value. But what if someone could make incandescents last hundreds of hours? What if someone could figure out how to power them safely and economically … on such a scale that an entire neighborhood could be electrified–like a major section of Lower Manhattan? It sounds like a pipedream, but one inventor with incredible business savvy thinks he can do it. All he'll need is a large team willing to make every error in the book until they can figure out how to do it right. This is the story of Thomas Alva Edison and his electric light. It's time to set the record straight: Thomas Edison's greatest achievement was not the lightbulb. In fact, he wasn't even the first to invent it. The unrecognized master stroke of Edison was he brought together some of the brightest minds to collaborate, exchange ideas, and work in creative ways to change the world as we knew it. In the first episode of Teamistry, host Gabriela Cowperthwaite journeys to late-19th century Menlo Park, where a team of unsung heroes is hard at work setting up an electricity grid that could light up a New York city block. There's a lot at stake: financial ruin, countless hours of labor, and Edison's very reputation. We hear from David Burkus, author of The Myths of Creativity and Jill Jonnes, author of Empires of Light. We also get the insights of Robert Friedel, University of Maryland history professor and coauthor of Edison's Electric Light, Kathleen Carlucci, Director of the Thomas Edison Center, and Paul Israel, Director of the Thomas Edison Papers at Rutgers University.Teamistry is an original podcast from Atlassian. This Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum artist and songwriter is the definition of a modern-day rock star. With the recent release of his EP ‘Oh My Messy Mind’ which featured the infectious duet “Peer Pressure” featuring Julia Michaels, and the heart-wrenching ballad “Bad,” he continues to highlight his songwriting and musical prowess. This past year he finished his sold-out US heading tour and this summer he opened for Ed Sheeran on his overseas European arena tour. In 2018, after the release of his sophomore album ‘Electric Light,’ he won the world over again with its singles “Wild Love,” “Pink Lemonade” and “Us.” Following the release of his debut album ‘Chaos And The Calm,’ featuring the singles, “Hold Back The River” and “Let It Go” he was nominated for Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best New Artist at the 2016 Grammy Awards. In the UK, the record became the “Biggest New Artist Album Release” that year and has sold nearly 5 million albums and generated 3.5 billion streams worldwide. Receiving the BRIT’s Critics Choice award in 2015, this songwriter has also gone on to win Best Male Solo Artist at the BRITS, International Newcomer at the ECHO Awards, Best New Act & Best Solo Artist at the Q Awards, and Most Performed Work for “Hold Back The River” at the Ivor Novello Awards. On the other side of the globe, he has also received a nod for “Best International Artist” at the ARIA Awards in Australia. And The Writer Is…James Bay!This episode is sponsored by Bandzoogle. Toe-Biter, Electric-Light Bug, Alligator-Tick; people have come up with many names for the fascinating critter. It's actual name is perhaps the most boring—the Giant Water Bug. They are the largest of the ‘true bugs' and belong to the Belostomatidae family of insects. Revisit our our fancy dress history as we celebrate NZFW 2019! Marguerite Hill, heritage researcher with Auckland Council, takes us on a journey of fancy; a history of fancy dress in New Zealand. Her talk is illustrated with examples found in New Zealand museum and library collections. This talk is also available on Auckland Libraries' YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/2XlgHMc The talk begins with examples of aristocratic dress including both royalty and high class New York society - look out for an electric light dress! Hill then shifts her focus to the New Zealand ball scene including an guide for "What to wear at fancy balls" (1887)This is available in digital form through the Internet Archive. Both formal and informal occasions for donning fancy dress are explored. An Onehunga Congregational Church camp photograph and a Lacrosse team, both from the early 19th century, illustrate popular dress up choices, some revealing trends and tastes of the time, such as black-face, and other more timeless characters such as pirates and clowns. The combination of costume and consumer advertising is explored through the "poster ball" and also in an impressive example of a dress overprinted with newspaper for a Canterbury Cricket Association fundraiser(pictured). Finally Hill looks at the phenomenon of cosplay, a term derived from the words costume play, where costumes are modeled on characters from popular culture. She uses the example of "Flat Man" a home-grown superhero who appeared in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes and asks whether he might fit this definition. Ultimately the talk concludes that the essential motivation for dressing up hasn't changed, although the means available to people and social fashions have of course moved along. Recorded at the Auckland Central Library on Wednesday 10 April 2019 Main image: Dress worn by Miss Banks who won first prize in the Human Poster Competition at the Canterbury Cricket Association Floral Fete, 19 December 1908. That string of multi-colored Christmas lights wrapped around your tree (or your house) is far more influential to American history than you might think. The first electric Christmas lights debuted in 1882, shortly after the invention of the incandescent light bulb itself, in the New York home of a Thomas Edison employee. They quickly became a vehicle for electric companies to tout the magic of electrical power. In the process, they helped secularize very basic symbols of the Christmas season. In this episode, find out how the invention of whimsical colored lights helped redefine the holiday and create comfort and unity for millions of Americans. PLUS: The origin story of those 'classy' lights you see wrapped around trees and lampposts on respectable urban avenues.
Professor Richard G. Stevens pioneered the link between electric light at night, circadian disruption and breast cancer. Since this discovery his work has focused on the electric light pollution in modern environments and its influence on our sleep/wake cycle and physiology. Professor Stevens is questioning to what extent circadian disruption compromises human health and accounts for modern pandemics of chronic diseases such as breast and prostate cancers, obesity, diabetes and depression. Further reading: Stevens RG, Zhu Y. Electric light, particularly at night, disrupts human circadian rhythmicity: is that a problem? Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci. 2015 May 5;370(1667).
