The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Racist Suspect Joel Whitney. Classified as a White Man, Whitney is a Brooklyn, NY writer whose work has been featured in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, The Baffler, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and Boston Review to name a few. He's "a former features editor at Al Jazeera America and a founder and former editor-in-chief at Guernica." Gus originally hoped to speak with Whitney about his 2016 publication, Finks: How the CIA Tricked the World's Best Writers. I'm not quite sure what my original motivation was for exploring this text - could have been Rev. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple or Soundtrack to a Coup d'État. Anyway, by the time we got our calendars synchronized, Mr. Whitney had written another book, Flights: Radicals on the Run. Most of the featured subjects who had to flee oppression are Victims of White Supremacy like: Minister Malcolm X, Paul Robeson, Dr. Angela Davis, and Leonard Peltier - who recently benefited from a commuted sentence from departing President Biden. During the broadcast, Mr. Whitney repeated the tacky refrain that White people are also "held back" by Racism. He could only list two trifling ways that the System of White Supremacy holds him down. Whitney also engaged in another suspicious and common practice amongst Racist Suspects: Citing the work of Ibram X. Kendi, a Victim of White Supremacy, to confuse non-white people about what it means to be classified as White. #LorraineHansberry #FarceOnWashington #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why the Best Writers Endure Isolation, published by Declan Molony on July 17, 2024 on LessWrong. Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, was once locked in a room for three weeks until he completed one of his books. Victor Hugo, when faced with a deadline for his book The Hunchback of Notre Dame, locked all his clothes away except for a large shawl. "Lacking any suitable clothing to go outdoors, [he] was no longer tempted to leave the house and get distracted. Staying inside and writing was his only option." Six months later, the book was published. Dozens of famous authors have done the same. Names like Virginia Woolf, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain - all of them constructed small writing sheds from which to work. Names like Ian Fleming, Maya Angelou, and George Orwell - the first two penned their novels while locked in hotel rooms, while Orwell isolated himself on a remote Scottish island to write. One explanation for this reclusive behavior comes from author Neil Gaiman in an interview he did with Tim Ferriss a few years ago. Ferriss mentioned Gaiman's most important rule for writing: You can sit here and write, or you can sit here and do nothing. But you can't sit here and do anything else. Gaiman, after a moment of reflection, responded by saying: I would go down to my lovely little gazebo [at the] bottom of the garden [and] sit down. I'm absolutely allowed not to do anything. I'm allowed to sit at my desk. I'm allowed to stare out at the world. I'm allowed to do anything I like, as long as it isn't anything. Not allowed to do a crossword; not allowed to read a book; not allowed to phone a friend. All I'm allowed to do is absolutely nothing or write. What I love about that is I'm giving myself permission to write or not write. But writing is actually more interesting than doing nothing after a while. You sit there and you've been staring out the window now for five minutes, and it kind of loses its charm. You [eventually think], "well actually…[I] might as well write something." Writing is hard. Between writing or doing anything else, most writers - even some of the most accomplished ones - acquiesce to distraction. That's why so many of them construct and work in environments devoid of external stimuli - the better to circumvent akrasia. I do all my writing in coffee shops. Similar to Gaiman, I allow myself to do one of two things: write, or people-watch. I don't bring anything with me except for a pencil, paper, and my research material housed in my journals. That means no phone, no laptop, and no watch (even knowing the time is a kind of distraction and pressure to perform). Within this environment, I end up writing because I've made it the path of least resistance. Thanks for listening. John Niven is a Scottish author and screenwriter whose books include Kill Your Friends, The Amateurs, The Second Coming. The F*ck-it List, and O Brother.John discusses his favourite of Amis's novel, The Information, published in 1995. The Information follows two star-crossed writers, Gwyn Barry and Richard Tull. The pair have been friends since university, but now as their approach their mid years, Tull's once promising career is withering on the vine while Barry receives plaudits and more opportunities than he can manage. John explains how the novel has aged like fine wine for him, both as a reader and writer whose career has mirrored both Tull and Barry's circumstances, though he is pleased to say it has settled somewhere comfortably in the middle of the two.As John says, Amis occupied a rarefied place: a serious literary novelist who was at the same time incredibly funny. His hunch is that Amis will be read for decades to come. Time is, after all, the only true test of a writer's work. FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamis Hosted on Acast. Oh boy. Today Professor Kozlowski is talking about Ortega y Gasset's 1925 essay "The Dehumanization of Art", which observes that contemporary art movements (like early modernism in literature, or abstraction and dada in visual art) are "dehumanizing", or de-prioritizing human experience in favor of artifice itself. But he's actually going to talk about the political dimension of art and literature - how politicians in WWI, WWII, and the Cold War co-opted art and artists to serve propagandist purposes, and whether or not art can be successfully separated from its political dimension. Today espionage, skullduggery, and military agendas meets philosophy, aesthetics, and art criticism. Suggested supplementary readings include: Familiarize yourself with early 20th-century art movements and artists, such as: Cubism (esp. Picasso) Abstraction (esp. Klee, Kandinsky, and Jackson Pollock) Dada (esp. Hoch and Duchamp) Surrealism (esp. Dali and Magritte) Finks: How the CIA Tricked the World's Best Writers by Joel Whitney To see what else Professor Kozlowski is up to, visit his webpage: https://professorkozlowski.wordpress.com/ And please consider contributing to Professor Kozlowski's Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/ProfessorKozlowski - where you'll also be able to vote for and suggest new topics for future lectures.

During their conversation, Mark and Sarah talk about: The fact that this is Sarah's first appearance as a podcast guest Working with Erin Wright on releasing her romance novels in audiobook How and when Sarah got started in audiobook narration The reality of trying to be an actor in LA - including the difficulty of even getting an audition Sarah's determination to get at least 200 rejections before giving up on this pursuit The importance of understanding your goal of having your books in audio Other suggestions to authors on strategies for determining whether or not its worth investing on audiobooks What Sarah wants every author to know about licensing their audio rights to a publisher The original of where Sarah got the "bug" for acting Determining that she really had to do acting for her soul Coming to terms with the doors that are open for you and the doors that are closed for you, and walking through the doors that are open instead of banging your head on the doors that are closed How audiobooks are an actor's medium - where an actor can't be limited or typecast by how they look, for example The comparison of a one-hander, a play performed by a single actor with being a single narrator of an audiobook Why Sarah highly recommends the audiobook for Charlotte's Web The converted and sound-proofed/sound-dampened closet that Sarah records in within her home How Mark met Sarah while looking for narrators for the audiobook for his Obsessions anthology The way Sarah gets new clients - Different genres that Sarah likes to work on as an audiobook narrator and what she looks for in a collaborative writing partner The deeply satisfying experience of creating the feature film THREE ROADS The resonance of a specific scene in the film that was created in an ad hoc fashion of collaboration between the actors ad libbing with suggestions from the director Sarah's penchant for ad lib film creation, but why they didn't use that for THREE ROADS (other than a few short scenes) Behind the scenes of the "little details" put into a feature film, such as the "scene within a scene" of a fictional movie two of the characters are watching The mind-boggling realization that every single thing seen on a television show or movie was painstakingly created, designed, or placed by someone responsible for that The challenging reality of the fact that the cost to just distribute this film and would most likely far outweigh the funds that would be earned off of it The cross-training of working on multiple collaborative and creative projects And more After the interview Mark shares a reflection about Sarah's conviction to stick it out until she tried 200 times, as well as the need for disruption in the film industry. Chocolate Mousse Ice Cream From Simple Flavours by Geoff Slattery Another treat for chocolate lovers. It’s easy to make and it’s one ice cream that doesn’t need a professional machine to make it creamy and smooth. The chocolate does that easily. Stuck in the middle of my copy of Gaston Lenôtre’s inspiring and beautifully detailed Lenôtre’s Ice Creams and Pastries, is a sheet of yellow copy paper, a legacy of the way newspapers used to be before gizmos and whizzos became all the new generation knows and understands. Scribbled across the top are the words ‘Perfect (though rich) chocolate parfait’. I call on this recipe but occasionally, because every time I make it, I eat so much of the irresistible combination of chocolate and ice cream, chocolate mousse and chocolate souffle, I can hardly walk for a couple of days. It’s the sort of dessert you take by the spoonful, swirl around your mouth, and return to for more and more and more. It’s the dessert equivalent of strawberry daiquiris. ‘Hey,’ you say, ‘one more can’t hurt me, can it?’ Then you stand up. Then you fall down. I’m like this with most things to do with chocolate. I love it, but leave it, knowing well that it and I are not the best of lovers. I go at it with a gusto, and the next morning I have this bad taste in my guts and swear I’ll never do it again. But then, you know how it is. You start dreaming of chocolate again, and all your values are thrown out the window, and you gorge yourself, you’re overcome with guilt, and time passes … and there you go again. If you intend to take this dessert sensibly, it is important to balance its richness with something acidic, something sharp, to assist in the eating process. That sounds like a formula for gluttony, but it is really about enhancing the star, rather than finding more room for it in your tummy. The true believers in chocolate need nothing to diffuse its richness, and can take chocolate in large volumes, and never suffer for it, never feel guilty about it, and are still in love with it the next morning. This is really for them—a chocolate mousse ice cream, based on a recipe from Lenôtre’s Ice Creams and Pastries. 300 g dark chocolate. 2 cups (600 mL) cream 200 g sugar 6 egg yolks 1 cap (that’s cap not cup!) peppermint essence or 1 bunch of peppermint (optional) raspberries, to serve a splash of brandy, rum, whisky or whatever strong drink takes your fancy (double optional) pear or apple puree, to serve   Melt the chocolate with a little of the cream over a low heat. Set aside in a warm place. Divide the sugar in two and add half to one cup of the cream and half to the egg yolks. Whip the yolks with the sugar for a few minutes, until the yolks change to a light, creamy colour, and leave ribbons trailing from the whisk. Heat the cream and sugar mix with the peppermint essence or peppermint leaves, thus flavouring the cream with the peppermint. (This is clearly optional but gives a lovely sweet/sharp flavour amidst the mass of chocolate and cream. Peppermint and chocolate, as thousands of restaurateurs who leave such with your coffee will tell you, are marvellous partners. You can also use orange zest, and plenty of it, as a flavourer if you wish. Or nothing at all.) Bring the cream and peppermint mix to the boil, and then allow to cool a little. If you have used real peppermint, drain through a sieve and discard the leaves. Pour half of this peppermint cream into the yolk and sugar mix, whisking furiously, and then pour it back into the remaining peppermint cream, stirring over a low heat. If you have a sugar thermometer, use it now to bring the temperature of the custard slowly, slowly, slowly to 80°C. This can be a little tricky, and you must keep stirring in a figure-eight motion to make sure the heat is gentle and regularly applied. Take care the egg yolks do not cook and remember the mixture will continue to cook from the heat of the pot. While the custard is cooking, pour the melted chocolate into a large bowl. Strain the custard through a sieve over the chocolate, and whisk for a few minutes to draw down the heat. Allow to cool until the mixture is somewhere around blood temperature. While the chocolate mix is cooling, whisk the rest of the cream until it stiffens and has expanded in volume. It should be of roughly the same consistency as the chocolate mixture. Fold the cream, a third at a time, into the chocolate mixture. Pour the lot into a cold bowl, and place in the freezer to freeze. Serve a little of the parfait with a lot of raspberries and, if you’re a true Bohemian eater, take a good shot of very good brandy, or dark, dark rum, in between mouthfuls of chocolate. On side, try a purée of pears or apples, cooked with a little syrup until softened, and then pureed. This and the berries will lighten the load of chocolate.

My guest is Cai Emmons. Her newest book, Weather Woman (https://www.amazon.com/Weather-Woman-Cai-Emmons/dp/1597096008/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1537539428&sr=1-1&keywords=weather+women), is the story of meteorologist Bronwyn Artair who discovers she has the power to change the weather. Feeling out of place in her doctoral program in Atmospheric Sciences at MIT, 30-year-old Bronwyn drops out and takes a job as a TV meteorologist in Southern New Hampshire, much to the dismay of her female mentor, Diane Fenwick. When, after a year of living alone by the Swampscott River, enduring the indignities of her job, first neglected by her Boston boyfriend, then dumped, she discovers that her deep connection to the natural world has led her to an ability to affect natural forces. When she finally accepts that she really possesses this startling capability, she must then negotiate a new relationship to the world. Who will she tell? Who will believe her? How can she keep herself from being seen as a kook? And, most importantly, how will she put this new skill of hers to use? As she seeks answers to these questions, she travels to Kansas to see the tornado maverick she thought was her mentor; falls in love with Matt, the tabloid journalist who has come to investigate her; feels called to visit the fires raging out of control in Los Angeles; and eventually voyages with Matt and Dr. Fenwick to the methane fields of Siberia near the Arctic Sea. This is the story of a woman experiencing power for the first time in her life. She must come to grips with that power and test its limits. What can she do for the world without hurting it further? Cai Emmons is the author of His Mother's Son, published by Harcourt in 2003 and The Stylist, published by HarperCollins in 2007. Her short work has appeared in Arts and Letters, Narrative Magazine, The New York Post, and Portland Monthly, among others, and she has a selection in Now Write: Writing Exercises from Today’s Best Writers and Teachers _(Tarcher Publications, 2006). Before turning to fiction Cai wrote for theater, film, and television. Two of her plays—Mergatroid and _When Petulia Comes—were produced in New York theaters. She wrote for the TV show The Trials of Rosie O’Neill, and she has optioned numerous feature-length screenplays. Special Guest: Cai Emmons.

On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Medea Benjamin, the co-founder of Code Pink and author of the book “Kingdom of the Unjust: Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection,” and journalist and independent political analyst Marwa Osman.Israeli Prime Minister made a speech today arguing that Iran is in violation of the nuclear arms deal as Trump prepares for a possible end of compliance with the agreement. Israel carried out major military strikes against Iranians in Syria. The bombing was so big that it created an earthquake. Brian and John also talk about Pompeo’s trips to Saudi Arabia and Israel this weekend. The danger of war with Iran is growing. The hosts discuss, “Finks: How the CIA Tricked the World’s Best Writers” with author Joel Whitney. It describes a situation that almost no Americans know about. In the early days of the Cold War, the CIA clandestinely recruited some of the greatest writers in the world--household names—to spy for them. They talk to the author about why this happened and why it’s been a secret for so long. Joel Whitney, the author of “Finks” and a co-founder of Guernica: A Magazine of Art & Politics, joins the show. Mumia Abu Jamal has been in prison in Pennsylvania since 1981, after being accused and convicted of killing a policeman. He was on death row until 2011, when his sentence was converted to life without parole. Mumia and his supporters have always maintained his innocence, and he was in court today in Philadelphia. He is asking a court to vacate his previous appeals attempts on the basis of judicial bias so that he can appeal his case again. Brian and John speak with Dave Lindorff, an investigative reporter, a columnist for CounterPunch, and the author of “Killing Time: An Investigation into the Death Row Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal.” The attorney for a right-wing organization that sues for conservative causes has filed a lawsuit against Arizona teachers, contending that their strike is illegal and seeking to force them back to work. But teachers remained on the picket line today, the third day of the strike, demanding increased funding and a commitment to stop making tax cuts on the backs of education. Dan Cohen, a journalist and filmmaker who was in Arizona to cover the strikes, joins the show. Monday’s regular segment “Education for Liberation with Bill Ayers” looks at the state of education across the country. What’s happening in our schools, colleges, and universities, and what impact does it have on the world around us? Today focuses on a trip to the opening of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, a museum and memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, that honors the memory of lynching victims and asks localities to publicly acknowledge that they occurred. The hosts speak with Bill Ayers, an activist, educator and the author of the book “Demand the Impossible: A Radical Manifesto.” Admiral Harry Harris has been nominated to be Donald Trump’s next ambassador to South Korea—an outrageous idea for a man who presided over the torture at the Guantanamo military base. Brian and John look into his record with Dr. Emanuel Pastreich, director of The Asia Institute in Seoul, Korea. Our friend and frequent guest Randy Credico was invited to the White House Correspondents Dinner over the weekend as a guest of Yahoo News. But the Washington swells didn’t like Randy’s message of freedom for Julian Assange, and they unceremoniously threw him out of the event. Brian and John speak with Randy Credico, an activist, a comedian, and the former director of the William Moses Kunstler Fund for Racial Justice.

Finks: How the C.I.A. Tricked the World's Best Writers (Or Books)   When news broke that the CIA had colluded with literary magazines to produce cultural propaganda throughout the Cold War, a debate began that has never been resolved. The story continues to unfold, with the reputations of some of America’s best-loved literary figures—including Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton, and Richard Wright—tarnished as their work for the intelligence agency has come to light.  Finks is a tale of two CIAs, and how they blurred the line between propaganda and literature. One CIA created literary magazines that promoted American and European writers and cultural freedom, while the other toppled governments, using assassination and censorship as political tools. Defenders of the cultural CIA argue that it should have been lauded for boosting interest in the arts and freedom of thought, but the two CIAs had the same undercover goals, and shared many of the same methods: deception, subterfuge and intimidation.  Finks demonstrates how the good-versus-bad CIA is a false divide, and that the cultural Cold Warriors again and again used anti-Communism as a lever to spy relentlessly on leftists, and indeed writers of all political inclinations, and thereby pushed U.S. democracy a little closer to the Soviet model of the surveillance state. Praise for Finks  "Listen to this book, because it talks in a very clear way about what has been silenced."--John Berger, author of Ways of Seeing and winner of the Man Booker Prize  "It may be difficult today to believe that the American intellectual elite was once deeply embedded with the CIA. But withFinks, Joel Whitney vividly brings to life the early days of the Cold War, when the CIA's Ivy League ties were strong, and key American literary figures were willing to secretly do the bidding of the nation's spymasters."--James Risen, author of Pay Any Price: Greed, Power and Endless War  "A deep look at that scoundrel time when America's most sophisticated and enlightened literati eagerly collaborated with our growing national security state. Finks is a timely moral reckoningone that compels all those who work in the academic, media and literary boiler rooms to ask some troubling questions of themselvesnamely, what, if anything, have they done to resist the subversion of free thought?"--David Talbot, founder of Salon and author of The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA and the Rise of America's Secret Government  "The marriage of politics and literature is always messy and seldom boring. Intrusive governments are invariably unimaginative and plotting writers are hilariously ineffective. The whole thing makes for tortured drama, and Joel Whitney is a savvy dramatist who knows perfectly how to juice intrigue!"--Ilan Stavans, author of Gabriel Garcia Marquez: The Early Years  "The CIA's covert financial support of highbrow art and fiction may seem like a quaint, even endearing, chapter in its otherwise grim history of coups, assassinations, and torture. In Finks, Joel Whitney argues otherwise and shines a discomfiting spotlight on this obscure corner of the cultural Cold War. The result is both an illuminating read and a cautionary tale about the potential costspolitical and artisticof accommodating power."--Ben Wizner, ACLU Director of Speech, Privacy and Technology Project  Joel Whitney is a cofounder and editor at large of Guernica: A Magazine of Art & Politics. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, Boston Review, The San Francisco Chronicle, Dissent, Salon, NPR, New York Magazine and The Sun. Award-winning investigative journalist Nick Schou is managing editor of OC Weekly. He is the author of Kill the Messenger: How the CIA’s Crack Cocaine Controversy Destroyed Journalist Gary Webb (Nation Books 2006), which provided the basis for the 2014 Focus Features release starring Jeremy Renner and the L.A. Times-bestseller Orange Sunshine: The Brotherhood of Eternal Love’s Quest to bring Peace, Love and Acid to the World, (Thomas Dunne 2009).
