Byliśmy w Narbonne, Albi, Sete, Minerve, Beziers, Montpellier, Aigues-Mortes, Perpignan, Collioure i najstarszym we Francji średniowiecznym mieście warownym Carcassonne. W krainie Katarów zwiedziliśmy też inne zamki królujące na wyniosłych szczytach, choćby Peyrepertuse, nazywany podniebnym Carcassonne. Odwiedziliśmy kościół w Rennes-le-Chateau, który przyciąga uwagę miłośników zagadek i teorii spiskowych. Zaproponowaliśmy rejs barką po Kanale Południowym, jednym z najbardziej znanych śródlądowych kanałów na świecie i przejażdżkę małym żółtym pociągiem – Le Petit Train Jaune, trasą kolejową należącą do najwyżej położonych i najpiękniejszych w Europie. Gościem Jerzego Jopa była Grażyna Woźniczka, współtwórczyni i współzałożycielka Polka Travel, kulturoznawca, latynoamerykanistka i filolog.

Our guest this week is our top point scorer since project reset, Osian McAvoy.  Osian is a Llandeilo RFC graduate having played with their team all the way to seniors and even invites himself on their 150th anniversary tour to Beziers.  He represented Scarlets at U16 and U18 and had a training week with Wales age grade, before deciding to get out of Wales to experience life and prioritise his education at Reading University.  Whilst there, he played a few matches for Rams in Nat 2, before graduating and finding himself at London Welsh post Covid.  Osian has been an ever present since then and has found a real home from home at the club, making many lifelong friends along the way.  On top of this, he takes us through how the London Welsh careers hub helped him find his next role and set him up with a mentor from the club. A great player who has been a big part of our success. Enjoy

Hear about travel to the Languedoc Region as the Amateur Traveler talks to Craig from Dallas about his road trip through the historic cities of Southern France, including Montpellier, Albi, Sete, Beziers, Carcassonne, and Toulouse. Why should you visit the Languedoc? Craig, says, "We've been trying to spend more time in smaller regions [of France]. I think this is a really, specific and unique region to try to go to because it does have some regional differences that make it interesting, say from other parts of France. You're going to find a lot of the same things here that you would think of going to France in general. Very good food and wine, churches, castles, palaces, art museums." Craig recommends a 7-day itinerary for visiting the Languedoc (Occitanie) region in southern France. Here's the itinerary he outlines Day 1: Montpellier Arrival: Start in Montpellier, a vibrant university city with a historic core. Activities: Take a free walking tour to explore the highlights and hidden gems. Visit the Arc de Triomphe, St. Pierre Cathedral, and Musée Fabre (second-largest art collection in France). Explore street art, vibrant cafes, and local shops. Vibe: Energetic, with a mix of historic charm and modern life. ... https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-the-languedoc/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bob Skinstad represented South Africa Rugby at all levels. Having captained the under 21 Springbok side in 1996 and 1997, he ascended to the adult team as a replacement on 29 November 1997 against England. He would go on to play 42 tests for the Springboks, scoring 11 tries – and captained the national side to its second Rugby Union World Cup in 2007, before retiring. Bob is now a Partner at the challenger consultancy firm Elixirr. Very recently Bob and Andrew Mehrtens (former All Black) completed the takeover of French second division club Beziers, heading up a consortium which also features ex-Formula 1 boss Eddie Jordan.Bob and I have a very candid chat about what is was like growing up in Zimbabwe as a white privileged child in an affluent family. During his teenage years Bob started to become fully aware of the challenges within South Africa during Apartheid. In fact Bob went on to meet Nelson Mandela in his role as national captain of The Sprinboks. Bob shares some great memories of chatting to Nelson Mandela and his incredible leadership and approach to inclusivity even after decades of incarceration. Bob reflects on his early life in South Africa and even with his obvious sporting talent he accepts that he took things for granted and didn't have a mentality for all out winning. Today, as a leader in business, Bob describes himself and learner as opposed to leader. The older he gets the more he realises what he doesn't know. When Bob started to play rugby it wasn't a profession for a full time role, it was all amateur. That changed for South Africa during the 1995 World Cup as Rugby started to mean more to the nation. Bob lived the transformational change within South Africa and became the first professionally contracted rugby player in the country. He made his men's debut in 1997 against England. Bob recalls having two district careers in rugby, one was the young devil may care maverick player that catapulted him into the national team and one was the captain and leader of a nation where he had to learn the history and scarred memories of many of his players who did not have the upbringing that he experienced.Belonging is a principle need for humanity and Bob explains how this is a powerful contributor to a high performing team, especially within a sporting context. Leading and managing chaos is inevitable on the international rugby field and Bob explains the importance of strategy, planning, speed of decision making and practice to help mitigate the chaos. One of Bob's standout lessons is that there are different types of people 'givers need to learn when to stop because takers never do' and so Bob realised how important it was to find his tribe with belonging purpose and passion.www.elixirr.com/en-gb/person/bobskinstad Hosted on Acast. I am in southern France, where three splendid new openings have taken place this summer, and I suggest you add them to your list. Specifically, I am on the verandah of the Hotel la Prison, perched on a high bluff next to the cathedral in Beziers. It has just opened as a boutique hotel, and beautifully done it is too. Stay here before it catches on and the prices rise. To the east, in the town of Agde, Chateau Laurens is a one-man folly: an extravagant mansion created by Emmanuel Laurens, with Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Hollywood flourishes. And to the west, in Narbonne, the spectacular new Narbo Via houses a collection of funerary monuments rescued from the old Roman walls. All are easy to connect by rail in a matter of minutes, and I urge you to add them to your travel list. This podcast is free, as is my weekly newsletter. There are some even more extreme deals, such as just €1 for a rail journey of almost two hours from Beziers to Millau. Many €1 buses run implausible long distances too.

In this podcast Kevin O'Callaghan, wine buyer at SuperValu, guides us through their current sale of wines from France - The SuperValu French Wine Event. In addition, Kevin touches on many other aspects of selling wine in 2020 - the challenges and rewards. Superquinn stores across Ireland used to bring us a very fine annual French Wine Sale. It was innovative. At times (before computerised tills made mix and match possible) wine boxes and their bottles were coded with coloured stickers so that customers could work out which offers were compatible with one another! Cute. Fast forward to today. SuperValu has long since succesfully bedded Superquinn into its impressive network of over 200 owner-managed franchised stores. It has also brought forward the fabulous French Wine Event. This year it takes place from Sept 3rd to Sept 16th.  While the current sale includes individual spotlights on the wine of each of Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhone the whole of France is well presented with very good value wines. Most of the great wines made in far flung countries, such as Australia, Chile and others, make wines with grapes of French origin. Sales, such as this at SuperValu, brings us back to their origins.  Particular favourites of mine are the Guy Saget Sancerre and Pouilly Fume from the Loire at €14.76, the Alma Cersius Coteaux de Beziers at €9.84 and the Gustave Lorentz Pinot Blanc Reserve from Alsace at the very good price of only €11.80. Many more wines are mentioned in this podcast, ( ... even the most expensive in the sale  - the sublime Louis Latour Meursault at €39.35 - is absolutely fabulous value - would make an exceptional Christmas present!!) and we will mention them at WineIreland.blog over the coming weeks of the sale.  For now enjoy the podcast. Its a rare and intriguing  insight into a fascinating world.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------- While all restaurants in Ireland were closed until recently many have now reopened. This is great news - Open Again! We should remember that many of these, including the wonderful Monty's of Kathmandu, are family businesses. They are often small and brilliant and need our support more than ever. Keep Safe and Keep well.  Kevin Ecock's WinePod is brought to us with the assistance of the Santa Rita Wine Room at Monty's of Kathmandu - an excellent place to host your next event or celebration. Contact Shiva at 01 -6704911 or HERE at the Santa Rita Wine Room web page.

The Pink Village inspired by wine, Village Castigno in France GORGEOUS TRAVEL with Sarah Tucker

It’s difficult not to think pink when you arrive at Village Castigno, Wine Hotel & Resort situated in the village of Assignan, in the Languedoc, just over half an hour’s drive from Beziers airport. Everything, from the walls of the buildings, the tables and chairs in the courtyard, the large umbrellas, the bed linen in the 24 rooms, to the plates and cups at breakfast, even the flowers and trees have been chosen it appears to bare only various shades of pink.  The hotel is a village within a village with a collection of buildings, a winery and three restaurants - one of which (La Table) is Michelin starred. There’s also a lounge room with its own pool. It reminded me of a pink version of Babington House in Somerset, one of the Soho House group of hotels, and it’s a growing trend to create French resort villages out of original villages. I remember visiting Crillon le Brave in Provence several years ago, when ironically a former partner of Soho House decided to create a collection of villas, restaurants and spa for guests in the same way as Castigno. It’s a concept that works well.    My room was a former grape pickers cabin (vendangeurs), from the outside, resembling a purple shed. This sounds unglamorous, but each room has been stylishly designed thanks to the owner, Tine, with clever touches. The lights for example, by the beds, are lit by touch rather than switch. All the mirrors are round, the walls various shades of purple or red. There’s intriguing Asian antiques and all the images on the paintings are sensual, although mine was of a fat woman shopping, which may do it for some people but alas not for me.  There are junior and prestige suites in the Maison D’Amis in the former wine storage house at the edge of the village where one room, Chateau Blanc, even has a decadent stand alone bath at the end of the bed. There are other prestige suites in other buildings closer to La Petite Table, with the trade mark hot pink and deep purple walls inside and out.   There is also the two bedroom Villa Rouge which can be booked per week. , It curiously doesn’t follow the fifty shades of pink colour scheme. It does have its own pool and veranda and some intriguing furniture and artwork. The perfect place to relax in complete privacy. Guests take breakfast in La Petite Table on the main square. Breakfasts are served on pink and purple plates, traditional (croissants, bread, cheese, cured meats, yoghurt, honey, bread of course) but all served with flair by red and white gingham shirted staff (nice touch).   The Thai (aptly called Le Thai) restaurant is next door which offers excellent fayre even if, like one of our group, you are vegetarian.   The Michelin star restaurant, a five minute walk from the main square, (a good idea, because it means guests need to walk along the narrow village streets and admire more of the buildings which are stunning if not wine coloured). The Michelin star is well deserved. Staff are attentive (I dropped a fork – they realised I dropped it before I did). The décor is interesting, eccentric and edgy. You walk into an oversized room with the skins and furs of teddy bears and children’s toys on one traditional stone wall and a giant bone half hidden behind an inner balcony. There are red and purple velvet curtains strategically placed as though you are either part of the performance or about to see one. There’s stag heads with antlers which light up and a kitchen where you are able to watch the two chefs prepare your meal. The carefully but not overly manicured gardens outside are fully exposed as the remaining two walls are floor to ceiling window, allowing a view of the hens and roosters which roam freely outside. You need to walk outside to get to the outdoor ‘privy’. The food is exquisite, and I was fortunate to have a wine pairing with each course (I tried a five course tasting menu). The hors d’oeuvres are superb. On the day I was there, I tried caramalised carrot with endive and sweet potato and pumpkin tartlets. There was fresh peas with langoustines, a green gazpacho, but nothing does it justice. Not even the photos. It is a sensual eating experience which is difficult to describe – it is just sublime and one of the elements of the Castigno experience which isn’t pink or purple. Maybe worth mentioning there is not menu as the element of surprise is part of the experience.  There’s a yoga room which is ironically the only place you are able to connect to the internet (it is a digital detox village rather than an alcoholic one), and also a charming little house, which was home to a former villager, where you receive massages. These are special thanks to the therapist Shahirah from Brazil, who is also a reiki healer.  There’s bikes, a 2CV (bright red) and vespas you are able to use to drive to the local market in St Chinian ( only ten minutes away), 4x4 wine safaris across the estate and vineyards taking you to beautiful view points and through a truffle forest, and you can walk to the Castigno cave (winery) itself (or fifteen minute walk), which on approach looks like an alien spaceship looming over the surrounding vineyards. It is actually an acclaimed architecturally designed building coated in cork shipped in from Portugal made to look like the bark, created in the shape of a huge wine bottle. Inside even the wooden casks containing the wine and fermentation pods (which resemble alien eggs in Alien), are pink and purple. The bottles are all various shades of pink and purple, and you are able to not only do wine tastings but see if you are able to identify which blends have created the wines themselves (a lot of fun, but learn to spit rather than swallow – you will end up very drunk otherwise). The grape harvest is mostly picked by hand and they still use horses to pull the cart. The vineyard has also diversified into gin and beer – the grapes are caramelised and sent off to Belgium to complete the distilling process.   While we were there it rained a lot (yes I did hum Purple Rain) but it says much for this place that the weather failed to dampen the fabulousness, the charm and colour of Castigno. It is sexy, dramatic, intoxicating even if you are tee total, and ever so slightly fifty shades – in that it is tastefully sexy, if that is possible. It’s for lovers rather than honeymooners. And even on cloudy days - anything but grey.  A night at Village Castigno Wine Hotel & Resort starts at 130 euros for the Vendageurs Rooms, Prestige Suites costing from £225 per night. The Villa Rouge may only be booked for the week.  #GorgeousEscapes #Wine #France  https://villagecastigno.com/en/

#14 Be The Trigger-Point Behind Your Goals with Mari A. Hole Athlete Case Study: Norwegian Pro & National Team Volleyball Player Dec 16, 2014 Getting to know Mari a bit over the last couple weeks has been nothing short of inspiring & educational. When we chatted about the need to get our stories out to athletes trying to do what we do or just to add value in some way she was on board immediately. There's something that always sticks out about selfless people (AKA unselfish).. With Mari before we'd agreed on a time to do the podcast she'd done her research & found out I help kids get to school in the USA & Canada... She asked about it and we started working on it even before the podcast... now her brother is getting some more interest from schools which is exciting. Mari did a lot of hours of work to track down school's info for her brother who is busy with school and volley. SELFLESS I tell you... amazing of her. Imagine you write 20 people and tell them you've got a project to help others & you'd like their help (Read: TIME & EFFORT)... Welp, usually about half the people write back and only half of those might actually do something about it. This time it was even less...Well, Mari was one of those I wrote during the launch of Beyond Athletic a few weeks back and she was one of the 1st two responses and the 2nd person to schedule a time to record! I remind you she's in the middle of a time of year where they are playing sometimes 2 matches per week and traveling intercontinentally! Some people make reasons to help others... not why they can't. So grateful for Mari doing this... BIO Born, Mari Aase Hole, in Miritz, Switzerland on August 3rd, 1990. Moved to Olso, Norway to start school. She has a young sister and brother. She was raised to participate in many actives like hiking, skiing, soccer, volleyball, biking, etc. She played soccer mainly until high school when volleyball took over.. She won/accomplished just about everything possible in volleyball at the highest level, by the end of high school, in Norway and chose to attend UCLA in the USA where she played for 2 years and then moved to Ohio State University for her final two years of college eligibility becoming an AVCA All American! Her first pro team was in 2013-14 in Istres, France, where she was the Best Scorer & Attacker of the LNV PRO-A league! (French Top Division) .Now she plays volleyball for Team Norway and pro for the Bezier Angels in France. MOST GRATEFUL FOR: Family! PERSONAL QUOTE: "Selv i motbakker vokser det blomster" Translation: "Even in the hills the flowers are growing" MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN HER LIFE: Her first coach.. who happens to be her mother also! :) Key Discussion Points: What’s her story and how she got into sports? What is her biggest fear? What has she learned from her life until now? What was her biggest obstacle? Why was it important that she go to a school in the USA? What is she most excited about? Key Lessons: YOU CANNOT SPECIALIZE IN ONE SPORT TOO YOUNG CHALLENGES HELP YOU IMPROVE "I was just looking for a challenge. I wanted to see how much better i could get." BEING AWAY FROM FAMILY CAN BE TOUGH EVEN IN TOUGH TIMES THERE ARE POSITIVE THINGS & LESSONS "It's been a big transition...schools were really great...but it was really tough... But I had a really good time, I had a lot of really good people around me." THINGS WILL NOT ALWAYS GO AS PLANNED HARD WORK PAYS OFF "If you want to get somewhere you have to put in a lot of the hours yourself...Don't expect anyone to do it for you." YOU MUST SET GOALS "YOU have to be the TRIGGER POINT behind it..." CAN'T COMPETE AT A HIGH LEVEL AND LEARN AT A HIGH LEVEL IN NORWAY SIMULTANEOUSLY "Volleyball is so much bigger in the States...There's a huge economic aspect behind it...So there's just expectations in volleyball are different. The coaches...I've never had had that big of a staff around me before... " FEARS OF FAILING BUT ALSO OF SUCCESS CAN HOLD YOU BACK IF YOU LET THEM "You do not get to go inwards." BE APPRECIATIVE! "Engage yourself in your surroundings!" ATHLETE'S TIP JAR What was holding her back from becoming better? Fear of failure & success Didn't want to "stick out" AKA been seen as a star/leader How She gets rid of negative thoughts: Just let it go... Block it out...Zone in on next action! Take a deep breath & Keep her action simple not overcomplicated. Smile & let people in so she doesn't close herself off to her teammates. Tool To Improve As A Human Being: Engage other people to get to know them a bit. Sleep & Morning ritual: 7-8 hours of sleep. Wake 1 hr before training. Get dressed. Eat breakfast. Read Norwegian News. Head to training 30 minutes before it starts. How does she adjust to a new city and/or team? Explore's the new city with her teammates so she get's to know the city and her teammates make memories. A Healthy Habit: I am a huge fan of smoothies, so often when I want something to "snack" on I make myself a thick smoothie. But generally my thought for staying healthy is everything in moderation. I have too much of a sweet tooth to stay away from ice-cream etc. Travel Tip: Make your own trail mix and bring fruit or other snack you enjoy to eat. It is good to always have something to eat in your backpack. That way you avoid buying unnecessary food on the go. And bring a water bottle. Recommended Book: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes Most Grateful For: Family. Key Mentor In Her Life: Her Mother (She was also her first coach) INFO Charity/Organizations They Add Value to: I enjoy to help people. In Norway coaching is done on a volunteer basis so when I am home I help out when I can and try to share my experiences when asked. Previously I have had talks/presentations to young volleyball players and teams about my experiences and what it takes to get better. Business/Work: Pro Volleyball Past/Current Teams: Beziers Angels (FRANCE) Recommended Guest: Follow Athlete Here: Blog | Instagram Definition of Beyond Athletic? "Be aware that people look up to you. Be aware of your actions as well as behavior... Because people will copy it whether you notice it or not. You have to be bigger than yourself and your sport...See past just your sport. There is more to you than just your sport." LEAVE A 5 STAR REVIEW FOR THIS EPISODE ON: ITUNES -OR- OUR SITE WE WILL GET YOUR REVIEW TO THE ATHLETE! @BEYONDATHLETIC
