Heading into the 1994 season, the San Diego Chargers were coming off of an 8-8 season under second year head coach Bobby Ross. There was little to be expected from the team from southern California. After all, the Chargers did lose their top running back and receiver from the season before on offense and their best defensive back to retirement. Yet with a stunning rally against the rival Denver Broncos in the opening game of the regular season, the San Diego Chargers began the season 6-0 and eventually winning and AFC West title after sweeping the season series against the Kansas City Chiefs led by the great Joe Montana who experts predicted were going the win the division in 1994 In this episode of the podcast, we will go back 30 Years to not only celebrate one of the best seasons in Chargers' history, but one of the most unexpected postseason runs in NFL history. Later in the show, host Dana Auguster would explain his fandom of then San Diego Chargers despite the fact of growing up in south Louisiana. I'm talking with San Diego native and the man behind The Bogey Blog, James Paige, about his favorite team ever, the 1994 San Diego Chargers! That team came seemingly out of nowhere to make the Super Bowl before facing off with the STACKED San Francisco 49ers in what ended up being one of the most lopsided Super Bowls ever, but it wasn't all bad. In fact, they were super interesting!  We talk about what James remembers from the years leading up to the 1994 team, including the hiring of former Citadel football coach Bobby Ross! How long until James was infected with the standard San Diegan sports fan sense of impending doom? We also go through and remember some guys! How much knowledge did I retain from years of playing Madden and watching the Carolina Panthers lose as a child (some things never change)? Who is Mark Seay and why does he have the most incredible story you've never heard of? James also tells some stories of seeing the Chargers out and about in San Diego! James talks about the 1994 NFL playoffs, including how low his expectations were and why he watched the games by himself. He talks about the joy of watching that team make the Super Bowl and how quickly it all went away when he realized who they were playing.  What was it like watching his favorite team go up against a team loaded with future Hall of Famers? And how long before all hope was lost? We go through the agony of being on the losing end of one of the biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history.  Finally, I aim to depress you by talking about the many different ways players from that 1994 team have died, why you will never love sports the way you did as a child, and the harsh realities of sports fandom. James talks about how the franchises move to LA affected him and how ownership missteps drove his own grandfather away from the Chargers years earlier! Who is YOUR favorite team ever? Hit me up if you want to come on and talk about them!  Check out James and The Bogey Blog on Instagram @the_bogey_blog The Rundown:  00:00 Intro  02:39 James' early Chargers fandom and the years leading up to ‘94 08:37 Low hopes heading into the 1994 NFL season 10:07 Let's remember some guys!  25:14 Entering the ‘94 playoffs with low expectations 28:12 The AFC Championship Game vs. the Steelers 37:39 A Super Bowl against a stacked 49ers team 47:45 Decades of a Super Bowl hangover 52:53 The curse of the ‘94 Chargers 01:00:04 The harsh reality of sports fandom Don't forget to support Catch Da Beat Apparel Co.!  Website: https://catchdabeatapparel.com/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/catchdabeatapparel/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/catchdabeatapparel/  Listen to the Beyond The Arc with Brandon Silvers podcast at:  Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/beyond-the-arc-with-brandon-silvers/id1611971780  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2LeRaBW3J2yJSA0kU4WS3j  Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy84M2Q2NjBlMC9w b2RjYXN0L3Jzcw  Anchor: https://anchor.fm/byabrandonsilvers  Send us an email at: beyondthearc843@gmail.com  Follow us on Twitter at: BeyondTheArc843  Beyond The Arc with Brandon Silvers breaks down today's hottest sports topics in a way that makes sense whether you're a rookie or a vet! The History of Sports Talk Radio Lee shared his Long Island roots and the start of his radio news/DJ career in his college days on a radio station in Appalachia.  After a great run broadcasting pro hockey in Cleveland, he took his talents to the desert to announce Arizona State football and basketball. Hacksaw also hosted a sports talk show on KTAR in Phoenix shocking the locals with critical comments of ASU's football suspension, the Suns getting blown out in the first round of the 1981 NBA playoffs, and the ineptitude of Bowie Kuhn during the 1981 MLB strike. This was the start of the “Best 15 Minutes in Radio.” This was the start of “Putting Topics on the Table.”  “React!”  Lee was determined to grab his listeners by the throat and hold them for 4 hours of compelling sports talk radio. Hacksaw's reputation in Arizona led to a 1986 phone call from the Noble Broadcast Group in San Diego to be the San Diego Chargers play by play guy and start a sports talk show on the Mighty 690.  At the time the station was broadcasting rock ‘n roll and Wolfman Jack. Little did they know that things were going to radically change in the next few years. Lee was the only sports guy in the entire station, and he started with a blank slate.  How in the hell was he going to pull this off? He started by creating a 9-hour NFL Sunday broadcast with a 2-hour Countdown to Kickoff pre-game show, the live game, and then a post-game show with caller participation.   The Mighty 690 Sports Talk Radio Meanwhile, every afternoon drivetime Hacksaw hosted his talk radio show using many of his provocative techniques to drive listenership. Lee was a sensation bringing sports facts, stats, and opinions in the late 1980s. He was the internet before the internet was a thing. After a brief transition to sports and news talk, the station went 100% sports starting in 1989. The Mighty 690 was the 3rd radio station in America to go all sports, and the first on the west coast. 690 had a “blowtorch signal” that carried Lee's show from “Baja to the Canadian Rockies.” As 690 went all sports, many new voices took the microphone to create a wide variety of opinions and styles on sports talk: Jim Rome came on board to start his Scrub Saturday show. He later got the night shift right after Hacksaw's show, working on developing his style, his smack, and his clones. Rome later went on to national fame, but did you know Hacksaw was first offered the national gig prior to Rome but he turned it down. Steve Hartman joins the station and with Lee's recommendation he was paired up with former Monday Night Football producer Chet Forte.  Two loudmouth guys: one young, one old, one west coast, one east coast.  It was perfect. Steve Mason and John Ireland took on the morning show and later saw their careers take them to new places. Minister in the Making started out as a way for a son to give his dad something to do during the isolation of the first pandemic summer of 2020. It turned out to be the last thing they ever did together. Travis Irwin, the "minister" in 'Minister in the Making', shared his entire life story in 37 episodes that ran from August 2020 until May 2022. On June 1, 2022, Travis died at the age of 72 after his final struggle with cancer. He was only 15 months into his retirement from 45 years in Christian ministry. The lessons he learned and the stories he told in his own voice and his own words are now available to anyone in the world who has access to this podcast. Since the "minister" in 'Minister in the Making' is no longer with us, the podcast no longer has its subject. This is the last episode. For this final installment, the son, BT Irwin, who interviewed Travis for 37 episodes, does the answering instead of the asking. Bobby Ross, Jr., editor-in-chief of The Christian Chronicle sits in as the guest host to ask BT what it was like to record Travis's entire life story and what that story means. 'Minister in the Making' is not the only way to benefit from everything that Travis Irwin learned from his 45 years in church ministry. A year before he died, he wrote a book, 'We Are God's Masterpiece', to help Christians and Christian congregations discover and use their spiritual gifts for the good of the local church and its neighborhood. Please go subscribe and like their podcast, and leave your hot takes about this game in the reviews. 1. Tennessee starts at 1:00 Really exploring the space is a reference to the more cowbell sketch. Michigan couldn't keep up with the speed of the Vols' guards but it didn't matter because Tennessee hadn't played Eli "Hooks" or anything like Dickinson, who turned questionable possessions into good ones. Huge game for Williams, but for four turnovers it's the Brooks game. We can rely on Collins because he's so quick. We know what this looks like: Xavier Simpson. 2. Colorado State starts at 29:20 The Frankie Collins game. What he did to Isaiah Stevens changed the game. Michigan also managed to hold Roddy outside, which when you're taking away usage from him it's going to less effective players. Those less effective guys unfortunately were canning all of their threes, and all the bounces went the Rams way, which led to the frustrating parts of the first half. Medved did a great job to get Hunter Dickinson switched onto tiny guys. Solution was as soon as they got some space Frankie took it away. Also one turnover! Also 65% from two! 3. Hot Takes and Villanova Preview starts at 44:07 Defending Rick Barnes, a new shot clock rule based on icing. Too hype on Frankie and Terrance? Nova: They're small, they shoot, they bring more smallness and shooting off the bench. #1 team at free throws. 46% of their shots are threes. Can Michigan keep up with Dickinson scoring? The fickle mistress of the arc will decide this game. Gillespie played against Michigan in the national championship game, has come very far since. Big East was a shooting league--hopeful they're not ready for Big Ten bigs. 4. Hockey Big Ten Tourney Champs & Tourney Preview starts at 1:12:24 Minnesota fans in Rod Marinelli Arena livid at obvious calls >>>>> Allentown regional. Seth is at fault for the ending of the Minnesota game, but it was a clinic from 1 minute in to the rest there at the Bobby Ross center. This felt different than previous games at Wayne Fontes Rink: fans were really into it and that made it an epic game you really wanted to win. It also secured the first overall seed and basically the dream scenario for the tournament, since Minnesota State got both NoDak and NoDam, and Michigan got a couple of teams who will actually play hockey. Frozen Four favorites? Certainly. But single-elimination hockey in front of zero fans is stupid.

Robert Ross, also known as Bobby Tables, has been into building stuff since he was 12 years old. Around that time, he Googled "how to make a website", learned from an online tutorial, and has been hooked on development ever since. He started making websites for people he knew in San Diego, which allowed him to facilitate his Xbox and Xbox Live needs. For gaming, he stuck to playing only Halo - and in fact, he already pre-ordered Halo Infinite over a year ago. But outside of gaming, he really loves to get analog - camping, being outside, and skiing. In high school he did a lot of marching band, and continued the art in drum core international after he graduated. Post competition, he started working full time with a web consultancy. Then went on to the next thing and the next, and he feels very lucky to have made the stops he made in his career, and the people he met along the way. He's grateful for his early work at an agency because it required him to move quickly, try out new things, and move on to the next project. This gave him a lot of rapid experience up front, which helped shape his skills later on.Eventually, he was an on call engineer - either by accident or intentionally - because he always wanted to help solve the problem. At one point, he set out to bridge bootcamp grads into the real world of software through a video series. As it turns out, the product he was building during the series was much more interesting - and desired - than the videos themselves. This is the creation story of FireHydrant.SponsorsCourierImg.lyRoutableCTO.aiCloudways offers peace of mind and flexibility so you can focus on growing your business instead of dealing with server management. We begin with a story by Ryan Burge on the Decline of the Mainline.  It was a response to a story by PRRI, the Public Religion Research Institute.  That survey said that the mainline churches were experiencing a resurgence, and their members may now actually outnumber evangelicals.  But that can't possibly be right.  We explain why. Next, we turn our attention to “The Chosen,” which is the streaming series by Dallas Jenkins that portrays the life of Jesus.  You have a review of the second season, by Joseph Holmes.  He says the second season is not as good as the first season, but it is still the gold standard for Christian television. Finally, we talk “Pastors and Plagiarism.”  We've covered a number of stories involving celebrity preachers and plagiarism over the years.  Everyone from Mark Driscoll to David Barton.  Lately, the issue came up when the new president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Ed Litton, was accused of plagiarizing sermons from the outgoing president J.D. Greear. First, I want to let you know that the classic book “Mission Drift” is our book of the month.  Mission Drift sprang out of research done by the co-author Peter Greer and his colleagues into the reasons some ministries strayed away from their founding missions, and how others stayed “mission true.”  This is an important book, and for a gift of any size, we’ll send you that book as our thank you for your support of MinistryWatch.  We think every Christian donor and ministry leader should have this book in his or her library.  But you do need to act fast.  This offer expires on May 31. Secondly, if you’re in a spot where you can’t contribute – hey, I get it.  Been there a time or two myself.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t help.  First of all, we covet your prayers.  We write a lot here at MinistryWatch about people who started out strong, but finished poorly.  Pray for us that what God has begun here will continue faithfully.  And, secondly, if you’re listening to this podcast on a podcast app, give us a rating.  The more ratings we get, the better the program performs with search engines.  It’s an important way you can help us, and it doesn’t cost you a dime. The producers for today’s program are Rich Roszel and Steve Gandy.   Here at MinistryWatch we get database, technical, and editorial support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, Christina Darnell, and Casey Sudduth.  Thanks to Bobby Ross, Julia Duin, Christopher Hutton, and entire Religion Unplugged team for providing content for our conversation today. And, of course, I’d like to thank my guest-host and Religion Unplugged’s leader, Paul Glader, for joining me on the program today. I’m Warren Smith, and you’ve been listening to the MinistryWatch podcast.  Until next time, may God bless you.

Each week, Warren and Natasha bring you news about Christian ministries, as well as the latest in charity and philanthropy, news that we examine from a Christian worldview perspective.  Our goal is to help us become better stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us.  On today's program, updates on previous stories involving Ravi Zacharias and John MacArthur.  We'll also have a story about a non-profit organization that provides alternative funding sources for African-American churches.  And the latest in our ongoing “Shining Light” series.  This week, a Denver, Colorado, ministry with ties to Southeast Asia. A couple of updates about MinistryWatch:  MinistryWatch is slowly learning a new trick during this age of COVID, and that is the art of the online webinar.  We did a webinar a couple of weeks ago about Warren's new book “Faith-Based Fraud” that was really well received.  If you attended that webinar, thanks for being a part of it.  During that webinar, Warren promised those in attendance a webinar in the near future on the topic of “How To Read a Form 990.”  A Form 990 is a form that non-profit ministries have to fill out every year.  It has a lot of helpful information on it, and we here at MinistryWatch look at them just about every day.  In fact, we think ALL donors should examine a ministry's Form 990 before they donate to that ministry. But a lot of donors have told me they don't even know where to find them, or what to look for once they do find them.  So we're going to do a webinar on that topic.  Again, the webinar is called “How To Find and Read A Form 990.”  That webinar will take place on Wednesday, Oct.28, at 3 pm ET.  Mark your calendar and we'll have information about how to sign up for that webinar on the MinistryWatch website. And, speaking of “Faith-Based Fraud”… Regular listeners to the podcast know that through the month of September we were offering a copy of “Faith-Based Fraud” to anyone who made a donation to MinistryWatch.  The demand for the book was so great that we have printed more books and we've extended that offer through October.  So if you missed the offer in September, it's not too late.  If you'd like to know more or make a donation, you can go to www.MinistryWatch.com and hit the DONATE button at the top of the page. On today's program, an Alabama pastor is under fire for liking a couple of posts on Twitter.  Now the city of Birmingham is canceling contracts with his church. Also on today's program, Moody Bible Institute apologized for yearbook photos from the 1970s and 80s that portrayed students in blackface.  And at least 30 private schools, including Christian schools, will close permanently because of the COVID Crisis. We begin today with a landmark ruling from the Supreme Court.  The high court ruled on Monday that the word “sex” in the 1964 Civil Rights Act applies to sexuality and, specifically, LGBTQ persons.  The ruling could have important implications for religious organizations. Special Note:  Today's story of David Ahl is the first in a series of stories about Generous Living that we've started at the MinistryWatch website.  Christina Darnell is going to be contributing these stories, and we hope to post one every week, or most weeks, anyway.  I think you'll be inspired and encouraged by these stories. Do you ever feel guilty for doing well? If so, you're not alone. Several people have expressed to us that they feel guilty, or are made to feel guilty, for posting that they are doing well. In times of crisis especially, people can be short-fused with people who express encouraging news. While we don't fully understand this phenomenon, we are sympathetic to those who are doing well and are fearful of telling others. We hope this episode can be an encouragement to those who are silently struggling.
