Jeffrey Holland is probably best known for playing Spike in Hi-De-Hi!, also the stuffy footman James Twelvetrees in You Rang M'Lord? and as Mr. Parkin the Stationmaster in Oh, Dr. Beeching! His first TV role was in an episode of Dixon of Dock Green and his television work includes such shows as It Ain't Half Hot, Mum, Are You Being Served?, Dad's Army, The Mayor of Casterbridge and Russ Abbot's Madhouse. He was in “Talent” written and directed by Victoria Wood at The Menier Chocolate Factory in London and more recently he toured the UK in “Waiting for God” and was in “Brassed Off” at the Wolverhampton Grand. His one-man show, “…and this is my friend Mr Laurel”, a play about legendary film comedian Stan Laurel, has sold out all over the UK. Now Jeffrey has written a memoir, The First Rule of Comedy which is out now and available here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/First-Rule-Comedy-Memories-Moments/dp/1803996390Jeffrey Holland is our guest in episode 464 of My Time Capsule and chats to Michael Fenton Stevens about the five things he'd like to put in a time capsule; four he'd like to preserve and one he'd like to bury and never have to think about again .Buy Jeffrey's memoir, The First Rule of Comedy, here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/First-Rule-Comedy-Memories-Moments/dp/1803996390Follow Jeffrey Holland on X: @JeffHolland07Follow My Time Capsule on Instagram: @mytimecapsulepodcast & Twitter & Facebook: @MyTCpod .Follow Michael Fenton Stevens on Twitter: @fentonstevens & Instagram @mikefentonstevens .Produced and edited by John Fenton-Stevens for Cast Off Productions .Music by Pass The Peas Music .Artwork by matthewboxall.com .This podcast is proud to be associated with the charity Viva!

Under all kritik

Bli prenumerant på Rak höger: www.enrakhoger.se/subscribe Hosted on Acast. New Zealand police officers have overwhelmingly rejected the government's latest pay offer and have given the government one last chance to lift its game. The latest offer was put to the vote on April the 8th by the New Zealand Police Association. More than 75% voted against the offer. That is overwhelming. President Chris Cahill said the outcome sends a clear message to the government that the offer falls well short of addressing officers' concerns and very real needs. Police Minister Mark Mitchell was on with Mike Hosking this morning and says the rejection is an incredibly disappointing outcome.  “In terms of where we are at the moment as a country, which is, we're basically broke in terms of the massive borrowing that was implemented by the previous government. The fact that we're paying $8.5 billion in interest. I mean I could increase our police service three times over with that money. And so, we've put together a package that is a quarter of a billion dollars better than the offer that went forward in August.”  That was Mike Mitchell talking to Mike Hosking this morning.   Look, I have every sympathy for the government inheriting the books they did, the debt they did. I have every sympathy for the government for inheriting pay negotiations that should have been settled under the previous administration, but the police should not have to bear the brunt of an economy that's been mishandled. With all due respect to Mark Mitchell, that is neither here nor there.   The police shouldn't have to care about the economy. They're suffering the impact of a mishandled economy the same way we all are, but it's not their concern. They don't have to carry the can because the economy's down the toilet. The last pay rise police had was two years ago at 3.5%. Inflation that year was 7.2%. So, they've been sold a pup basically. They were let down by the previous administration, but there were many promises during the election campaign that they would be supported. Law and order was a huge issue in 2023 and was given even more prominence than it normally is during any old election campaign, and with good reason.   Mark Mitchell and National, Christopher Luxon promised to crack down on crime, neuter the gangs and support the police. Along with the economy, that was one of their biggest platforms, law and order. The fact that the police had been let down and that they would restore faith for the police and restore the kind of mana the police once eroded under years of, I would say not ‘neglected' so much, certainly more police were added to the ranks, but you had police ministers that didn't particularly want to be there other than Stuart Nash, and it seemed to be on a high rotate. It didn't seem to be. a portfolio that was given much prominence by the previous administration and national capitalised on that in the election campaign. When Christopher Luxon was in studio with me a couple of weeks ago, I put it to him that he owed the police a decent pay off offer after all the tub thumping.  “We tried to put an enhanced offer in just after, you know, month or so ago, and then we put another new offer on the table just at the end of last week, which you know has been taken out there. I can't really go into the details of that because in fairness, the police are actually all going to digest that objectively themselves and make their own individual decisions as to whether that's something they do want to support or not. But I'm hopeful because the government has put in hundreds of millions of dollars more on the table in order to make sure that we can put our best foot forward in that negotiation. We back our police; we want them to do well.”  Well, pay them more then. Give them the respect that they're due. When you are using the men and women in blue as a marketing tool, as a call to action for all New Zealanders, then I think police can quite rightly expect to see that support come about in a tangible way. With a decent employment offer. The latest one, the one that Christopher Luxon was talking about, hundreds of millions of dollars, well, $250 million, so yes, technically it was hundreds of millions, was rejected by 75% of the police who are members of the Police Association. So no, not even close to good enough.   If it was Poto Williams in charge, sure you wouldn't have much in the way of expectations. But when you have a former cop in the form of Mike Mitchell, and you have a former cop and Police Association advocate, Casey Costello in charge of the portfolio, you would expect more than platitudes. I do not blame the police for being brassed off, and all. They were led to believe, they were told to believe, that under this government, things would be different. That hasn't happened.  Mark Mitchell saying that the economy is in a parlous state, so what? Yes, it is. So, make the savings somewhere else. I'm assuming that MPs won't be accepting their pay rise, that they will introduce legislation, which they can do, to turn it down. To say look, I'm sorry under these conditions we simply cannot accept a pay rise. Take that money, give it to the police.   Obviously, it's not as simple as that, but seriously, if I was a police officer, I would be brassed off. You've been led to expect much and this government hasn't delivered. Kind words and passionate rhetoric do not pay the mortgage or the grocery bill. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I have mentioned Yorkshire many times, but rarely focused on it. Time to rectify that. Yorkshire is a historic county of England, between the Pennies and the North Sea. It is England's largest historical county with a history shaped by the Vikings (Danelaw), the War of the Roses (1455 – 1487), and the Industrial Revolution.Famous Yorkshire folk include:Sean Bean, best known as ‘006' in Goldeneye, and as Sharpe a kind of Napoleonic 007. The original Bernard Cornwell novels have Sharpe as a Londener, but this was reset for the show after casting Bean.Judi Dench, hard to know which is her best-known role, but I shall default to ‘M' from the 007 films! Her Yorkshire accent only comes out with strong language.Diana Rigg (Mrs. James Bond) who is from Doncaster, just like Jeremy Clarkson, although they sound quite different. Clarkson's original ‘BBC voice' was closer to Rigg's, he later dropped it for his more natural accent. Patrick Stuart (a non-Bond); in the 24th Century no one cares if you have hair (for men anyway)Pete Prostlewaite, Steven Spielberg called him "The best actor in the world"! He's most famous for Jurassic Park 2 and Inception (he's the old dude dying who prompts the story)… and of course, Brassed Off (1996) with a young Obi Wan Kenobi.I also talk about a famous Yorkshire ‘anthem':Ilkla Mooar baht 'at Song Lyrics:Wheear 'ast tha bin sin' ah saw thee, ah saw thee?On Ilkla Mooar baht 'atTha's been a cooartin' Mary JaneTha's bahn' to catch thy deeath o` cowdThen us'll ha' to bury theeThen t'worms'll come an` eyt thee upThen t'ducks'll come an` eyt up t'wormsThen us'll go an` eyt up t'ducksThen us'll all ha' etten theeThat's wheear we get us ooan back Don't worry, I provide a translation from the West Yorkshire dialect. I do attempt to read it in the dialect, please have patience with that! This month, Emma and Steve look at Brassed Off. It's a film about a colliery band, about music and community. It's also an explicitly anti-Tory film set 10 years after the Miners Strike and one year before the Tories were swept out of office by the 1997 Labour election landslide.

Sympathy for the Sheeran: Why Ed deserves to beat Marvin Gaye in the current copyright court case. And why Status Quo's Francis Rossi has a point. Does the downgrading of old skool indie DJs Mark Riley and Gideon Coe mean the beginning of the end for BBC 6 Music? Brassed Off and The Full Monty have a lot to answer for: what the latest sentimental Brit comedy starring Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton says about British tastes.

It was multi-Oscar nominated and its creator walked away with best screenplay. The Crying Game also won Best British Film at the Baftas. And it was ground breaking, tackling as it did race, gender, sexuality and nationality all with a background of the troubles in Northern Ireland. Full of surprises, it was an enthralling and exciting film which broke many taboos. And it had a fabulous soundtrack too. Ashley Byrne has been talking to prolific Irish film maker Neil Jordan about how it all happened nearly 30 years ago. Distinct Nostalgia is a big champion of British film and you can hear other interviews on Distinct Nostalgia about Brief Encounter, Brassed Off, My Beautiful Laundrette, Oliver, The History Boys and Maurice. Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. In the latest episode, Scott is joined by Steven to chat about a movie featuring fading communities, Thatcher and flugelhorns. Join us we take a look at Brassed Off (1996) “In existence for a hundred years, Grimley Colliery Brass band is as old as the mine. But the miners are now deciding whether to fight to keep the pit open, and the future for town and band looks bleak. Although the arrival of flugelhorn player Gloria injects some life into the players, and bandleader Danny continues to exhort them to continue in the national competition, frictions and pressures are all too evident. And whose side is Gloria actually on?” “The truth is, I thought it mattered - I thought that music mattered. But does it bollocks? Not compared to how people matter.” You can find this and all our previous episodes at: Apple Podcasts Libsyn Player FM Podtail Owltail ListenNotes Follow us on Twitter @rbritanniapod Join us over at our Facebook Group ….we’d love to chat with you email: reelbritannia@gmail.com Thanks for listening Scott and Steven

Amy Roberts is a four times BAFTA winner and Emmy Award winning British Costume Designer.  Throughout her career Amy has garnered a fantastic reputation for her eye for detail, design ideas and approach to all her work.  She has worked in TV, Theatre and Film, beginning her career working at the BBC and worked on productions including Dr Who, Play for Today, The Tale of Beatrix Potter, The Legend of King Arthur and An Englishman Abroad.Richard and Amy have a long established relationship which comes across well in the conversation, Amy discusses what it was like working at the BBC in the 1970s and 80s and the reputation that her peers at the BBC had.  Amy had already established herself as a designer of note when as a freelance she started working in feature films, in Theatre as well as continuing her TV work on productions such as Brassed Off, The Virgin Queen, Swallows and Amazons and Oliver Twist.Today Amy is probably best known as the designer for Seasons 3 and 4 of the Crown, (with Season 5 due to begin next year) a challenge that she has comfortably risen to, being able to design the costumes for large set piece scenes such as the Investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales and Diana and Charles wedding as well as the more intimate scenes of Royal family life.Amy has built up an incredible team around her, one that she feels supports her as much as she supports them and to her the team are an essential part of what makes a great production.   A thoroughly nice person she is a pleasure to work both for and with.

We've both had Sinead O'Connor's album "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" stuck in our heads for 30 years, but ranking it proved challenging. How do we choose among so many evocations of pain, love, and three babies? Our path includes political rage, feelings you can't understand until you're older, and, of course, and the William Tell overture. Our intro is by Andrew Byrne, and our outro is by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, as heard on the Brassed Off soundtrack. Want to leave us a voicemail? Just call 646-389-0767! In the latest episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, Simon heads back to the 1990s! Demolition Man (1993) was the second building block in a Sylvester Stallone career revival, following the same year's Cliffhanger. But it wasn't an easy production - and its director would never direct again. Brassed Off! (1996) meanwhile was expected to be a small British film with little reach beyond the area in which it was set. Plus, it faced the challenge of telling a real life story of a town still facing serious ramifications. What would happen when the filmmakers turned up? Stories of both are discussed in this episode... Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriespod. You can find the Film Stories website Film Stories.
