In this wide-ranging conversation, Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly explore their latest adventures in storytelling across the worlds of Star Trek and Marvel Comics. We begin with IDW's Star Trek: The Last Frontier, delving into the aftermath of “The Burn” and their bold revival of Captain James T. Kirk. The discussion then turns to Marvel's Thunderbolts, where Bucky Barnes faces off against the formidable Doctor Doom in a tense battle of strategy and survival. From there, we venture into the cosmos with Luke Cage in an unexpected, galaxy-spanning saga, before grounding ourselves in the streets with NYX, led by Ms. Marvel, where youthful heroes navigate life, identity, and responsibility in New York's shadows. It's a deep dive into legacy, reinvention, and crafting unforgettable character arcs.

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoAs enthusiastic fans of pop culture we may sometimes forget that there are real flesh and blood people who make Captain Kirk's heroics come to life on the printed page, between the glossy covers of our favorite comics, the small screens in our homes, and the large screens in the local cineplex. There are so many wonderful creative men and women whose greatest desire is to share their stories with an eager and faithful public. Recently one of these amazing creatives passed fromour midst, but he left a legacy of mythic narratives that thrilled and enriched the lives of pop culture fans for decades. Join your hosts James, Keith, Joe, and returning guest, Michael Jan Friedman for a warm and wonderful tribute to Peter David.   Novels, comics, screenplays, video games and  more, Peter was a consummate creator who took us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, the deep, dark depths of the oceans, the psyche of a tortured man/monster's mind, and the mutant world of the misunderstood. Many of our Mint faithful are familiar with Mr. David's work on Star Trek, Aquaman, The Incredible Hulk, and X-Factor, but if you stay till the end of this episode you will learn so much more of the life and works of this "incredible" man as recounted by his close friend Michael Jan Friedman. Engaging stories of a "fan boy" who lived his dream.    And there are still a myriad of stories to tell in the pop cultureuniverse, but it's undeniable that Peter David's stories will forever shine like the brightest stars in this vast universe of wonder and awe.

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Today's podcast features an incredibly talented and always delightful Catherine Hicks. You might remember her as the loving Annie Camden from “7th Heaven,” the brilliant Dr. Gillian Taylor who taught Captain Kirk a thing or two about whales in “Star Trek IV” and of course, the woman who had the unfortunate luck of buying a doll possessed by a serial killer in “Child's Play.” But then, we've all made questionable shopping choices, right? But, did you also know she starred alongside Bill Murray in “Stripes?” She held her own against one of comedy's greatest. She'll comment on that experience.

In which we discuss Apple TV+'s Foundation, S3E05 - "Where Tyrants Spend Eternity."We didn't love this episode as much as the last one. Do you remember the Star Trek Episode "Court Martial?" It's the one where Captain Kirk is accused of murdering Lt. Commander Benjamin Finney. It's a little like that. The climax of the episode comes when Kirk's attorney, Samuel T. Cochran, deploys the Chewbacca defense. He starts with, "Ladies and gentlemen of the supposed jury, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense!" Eventually, he concludes, "If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit," and Kirk goes free. Also, this description does not make sense. There's a lot of that going on.

Jace welcomes Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing back to the show to chat about Star Trek. The guys start off by looking back on the second act of their Star Trek run specially for the two big events that took place during it, Day of Blood and Lore War. Their is plenty of talk about legacy, emotion and character with Lore and Kahless specifically. Then the discussion pivots to the new era of Star Trek that will be the setting for The Last Starship. A Star Trek story set farther into the future than any Star Trek story has ever explored. It is a darker universe following the catastrophic event known as The Burn, wherein all dilithium has become enert and 96% of Starfleet personal, along with trillions of citizens galaxy-wide, have lost their lives due to this unforeseen occurence. Into the chaos of these events, perhaps the most legendary Starship captain of all time, James T. Kirk, will return. It's a wonderful place for someone who has never read Star Trek to jump on, just as it will excite long-time readers with a tone that Star Trek hasn't explored much in the past. There is incredibly textured art by Adrian Bonilla and to hear Jackson and Collin tell it, he is as passionate about Star Trek as they are, so expect great things artistically. Final Order Cut-Off for The Last Starship is August 18th, so let your comic shop know that you want a copy and be ready when it arrives in shops on September 24th.

Helen Castor is a British historian and BBC broadcaster who left Cambridge because she wanted to write narrative history focused on individuals rather than the analytical style typical of academia. As someone interested in individual psychology and the functioning of power, Castor finds medieval England offers the perfect setting because its sophisticated power structures exist in “bare bones” without the “great apparatus of state,” bringing individual power plays into sharper relief. Her latest book, The Eagle and the Hart, exemplifies this approach by examining Richard II and Henry IV as individuals whose personal choices became constitutional precedents that echo through English history. Tyler and Helen explore what English government could and couldn't do in the 14th century, why landed nobles obeyed the king, why parliament chose to fund wars with France, whether England could have won the Hundred Years' War, the constitutional precedents set by Henry IV's deposition of Richard II, how Shakespeare's Richard II scandalized Elizabethan audiences, Richard's superb artistic taste versus Henry's lack, why Chaucer suddenly becomes possible in this period, whether Richard II's fatal trip to Ireland was like Captain Kirk beaming down to a hostile planet, how historians continue to discover new evidence about the period, how Shakespeare's Henriad influences our historical understanding, Castor's most successful work habits, what she finds fascinating about Asimov's I, Robot, the subject of her next book, and more. Real Life This week, Steven finally found a superhero movie that didn't make him want to throw his popcorn at the screen. Superman (2025) has arrived, and according to him, it's the best take we've had on the character in years. No origin story nonsense, just straight into Supes doing good and being good. James Gunn gets it—Superman is an immigrant, a boy scout, and a damn firefighter (not a cop). The moral core is there, the cape looks good, and apparently, if you hate it, it's because it's “woke”? Whatever. Steven liked it. You probably will too. Meanwhile, Devon has been dodging storms, not floods. He lives far from the Texas chaos but has had his fair share of wet weekends. That hasn't stopped him from grinding away at backyard renovations. Fake grass is coming soon. In the process, he's tearing out ivy and ground brush—bad news for copperhead snakes, which are venomous, and good news for anyone walking around barefoot. Speaking of venom: Ben brings us the delightful fact that some birds are venomous. No, really. There are birds that store toxins from insects and plants and use them to defend themselves. The pitohui says hi. Nature is weird. More bird venom facts here. Devon also dove into evolution this week, thanks to a Hank Green video about the great leap from water to land. Turns out the hardest problem evolution ever solved might just be how to turn gilled swimmers into four-limbed land mammals. Spoiler alert: it involves lungs, fins, and a lot of time. Watch the video here. Ben, when not thinking about venomous birds, asked an important question: What do people do for fun in Palmdale? The answer, apparently, is “hang out near electrical poles.” He also recommends the board game The Red Dragon Inn for those nights when you're too tired to fight dragons and just want to drink with them instead. Game info here. Future or Now Only Steven showed up for this segment, and he brought ancient lion maulings. A new article from ScienceDaily describes a skeleton found in a Roman cemetery in York—with bite marks matching a lion's jaw. It's our first archaeological evidence of gladiator-style combat between a human and a lion, which is equal parts horrifying and fascinating. Steven points out that if curses were real, this would be prime material—digging up gladiator graves seems like an express ticket to ghost lion attacks. Book Club This week, we read The Last Question by Isaac Asimov, a story about entropy, immortality, the heat death of the universe, and one computer's ongoing existential crisis. Devon raises a solid point: the story's final punch line hits different if you grew up with the Judeo-Christian idea of divine creation. If not? It still works, but maybe not quite the same way. You could easily sub in other creation myths—or just throw in some Terminators and call it a sci-fi remix. Ben had Siri read him the story aloud via Mobile Safari and recommends the experience. Read it here or watch this animated version. Next week: There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury, a classic tale of loneliness, technology, and automatic breakfast machines still flipping eggs long after humanity is gone. You can read the story here or listen to a reading. Oh, and if you missed it, Captain Kirk is coming back—sort of. He's being resurrected for Star Trek: The Last Starship, a new comic set in the far future. We have thoughts. Mostly confused ones.

The Undiscovered Country #RTTBROS #Nightlight The Undiscovered Country: Embracing Our Journey to the Future "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31, KJV)"The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is." C.S. LewisIn Star Trek VI, the Klingon Chancellor Gorkon speaks of death as "the undiscovered country," borrowing Shakespeare's phrase from Hamlet. Yet in the film's closing moments, Captain Kirk reframes this metaphor: "The undiscovered country... the future." What was once a symbol of finality becomes an invitation to possibility. The Paradox of Waiting and SoaringIsaiah's promise presents us with a beautiful paradox: those who wait upon the Lord will soar like eagles. In our culture of instant everything, waiting feels like inaction. But the Hebrew word for "wait" (qavah) carries deeper meaning—it suggests hopeful expectation, like a taut rope under tension, ready to spring into action. The eagle doesn't flap frantically to stay aloft; it finds the thermal currents and rides them with grace and power. Similarly, when we anchor ourselves in God's character and promises, we discover an updraft of strength that carries us forward into uncertainty. Boldly Going Where We've Never GoneThe Star Trek motto "to boldly go where no one has gone before" resonates with the Christian journey. Every morning, we wake to a day that has never existed before. Every choice we make writes a page in history that has never been written. Like the crew of the Enterprise encountering new civilizations, we face each day with both wonder and trepidation. The unknown stretches before us, personal challenges, global uncertainties, opportunities we can't yet imagine. C.S. Lewis reminds us that this journey is universal; we're all time travelers moving forward at exactly the same pace, regardless of our circumstances or station in life.Strength for the Undiscovered CountryWhat transforms our journey from mere survival to soaring adventure? The promise of renewed strength. Isaiah describes three phases of this strength:- Mounting up with wings as eagles: Moments of transcendence when we rise above our circumstances- Running without weariness: Seasons of sustained energy and purpose- Walking without fainting: The quiet endurance needed for ordinary daysNotice the progression moves from spectacular to mundane. The most remarkable promise might be the last—that we won't faint during the simple act of walking. Most of life happens in the walking, not the soaring.Curiosity as Spiritual DisciplineThe future remains undiscovered not because it's hidden from us, but because it doesn't yet exist. It's being written moment by moment through our choices, relationships, and responses to circumstances beyond our control. This uncertainty isn't a design flaw in creation, it's an invitation to trust. When we approach tomorrow with curiosity rather than anxiety, we practice a form of worship. We acknowledge that God's imagination exceeds our own, that His plans for us contain possibilities we haven't dreamed. Like children on Christmas morning, we can wake each day wondering what gift the hours might bring.Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out.https://linktr.ee/rttbros

The purpose of this podcast is to help you find healing for your wounds; find hope in your despair; find intimacy in your loneliness; find refuge from the storms of life; Basically, to help you find a deeper walk with Jesus. There is one thing I know after having lived all these years: God wastes nothing. Not our sorrows. Not our wounds. Not even our failures. Hi. I am your host, Dennis Jernigan. Today's podcast is gonna be a bit different from most of my podcasts. This is the story behind the final installment of the music from my fantasy book series, The Chronicles of Bren: Book One: Captured. The collection of songs is called “Captured: Songs for the Journey.”  This week's episode is the story behind the last song in the series. That song is called, “Live the Adventure.” “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” Helen Keller I love that quote. It almost captures my heart for this series of books. Almost. I have adapted a  personal version that has influenced the writing of these stories of and from the land of Bren. “Life is either a grand, daring adventure or it is nothing at all.” Dennis Jernigan My love of writing and my love of hearing great stories of people who have overcome impossible circumstances has led me to write…in spite of whether those writings are ever considered great or not. The reason I wrote The Chronicles of Bren series and The Bairns of Bren series is simple. I wanted to leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren for generations to come. As a part of that legacy, I endeavored to write stories which depict the realities of life. Life is not easy. Life is full of sorrow. Life brings times of wounding of both body and soul. Life brings times of disappointment and even betrayal.  My goal is to leave my family a legacy that explains how life, even with its many hurtful episodes, is meant to be lived with joy. And just how does one do that? I personally believe that if one sees life and its circumstances - both good and bad - from the Lord's point of view, insurmountable mountains become molehills. Impassable rivers become rites of passage. Unbearable grief becomes an opportunity to receive comfort. Fear is replaced with love. Rather than being something to somehow endure, life becomes the most grand adventure because a life lived with the Lord ever-present at one's side sands away the bitterness of life revealing a many-faceted treasure of great worth.  Forgiveness and humility replace bitterness with the heroic heart of a benevolent conqueror. My desire, as a dad and granddad, is that my heirs would come to see themselves as overcomers. I believe Almighty God created the human imagination as a means of revealing His nature to mankind and as a means of helping the human mind understand and begin to unravel the wonderful mystery of Who God is. The gift of imagination has helped me see how even things that are meant to hurt me can be seen from a different point of view - and perspective is everything. Why write in the fantasy genre? Simple. God used fantasy to rescue my heart and mind when I was just a young boy. I felt trapped in what I now call stinkin' thinkin' concerning my identity. I felt I was being held captive in my own mind but God did something amazing during my boyhood that carried me through to the day He set me free.  From the time I was a little boy and all the way into my marriage and adult life, God has used fantasy, mythology, and imagination to rescue and save me. Just a quick case in point. When I was a boy, I felt constantly bullied and that my father could not possibly love me and that there was no escape and no one to rescue me…but each night as I fell  asleep, I was suddenly on the USS Enterprise. My dad was none other than Captain James Tiberius Kirk and my mother was Doris Day. Each dream I was captured by aliens and just as they were about to end me, my dad, Captain Kirk, would materialize and blast them with his phaser, not set to stun but set to destroy. My mom was always there singing Que sera, sera. Whatever will be, will be…Just a cool memory of how my mother used to comfort me. I believe the Lord used that recurring dream to keep me hanging on…to make me feel someone or something good was pursuing me. When it dawned on me that this was the case, I began to understand the role of imagination in the way I viewed the world and the massive creativity and divine order God set in motion by His own imagination. What does any of that have to do with living the adventure? A simple example from my own life. When I was about 30 years old, I asked myself this question: When you get to the age of 65, what is something that you would look back on and regret not even having tried? For me that was writing and recording music and authoring books. In college I was not allowed to major in song writing because they told me they saw no potential in me. I nearly gave it all up…but something deep inside of me kept nudging me to step out and see life as a grand adventure…so I did. And Father God has seen fit to spread my music literally all over the world. I also wanted a large family, but many told me we needed to wait until we had enough money to start a family before we should even consider it. If I had taken that advice I would not have had the privilege of raising 9 of the most amazing men and women I know of on this planet. I worked hard to provide for my family, but set aside personal time to be with them a lot, and I also carved out time to write each and every day. But had I not dared to believe what the Lord was putting in my heart, I never would have taken one step toward any of my dreams.  Even if you're 65, it's not too late to begin living out the adventure of things you have dreamed of doing. If you're breathing, there is hope…and if you take that first step in the journey, your adventure has begun. What is your heart telling you right now?  [Pro 13:12 NIV] 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. SONG [Joel 2:28 NIV] 28 "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.” I certainly enjoyed writing the three book series, The Chronicles of Bren. They honestly helped me get a better grip on Father God's point of view of my life. My hope is that you would discover joy and solace within the pages of the books and the melodies of the songs. But you'll never fly if you never try To conquer the wind! Live the adventure!  Dare to believe Knowing he cannot fly Who won't spread his wings! Live the adventure!  Knight, take your horse! Ride to the horizon, Eyes fixed on the course! But you'll never see what you don't believe! And you'll never live what you never dare to be! It's Friday and we fooled them again! This week's RGF focuses on more dream analysis and how it can transform you. From betrayal in a dream cafeteria to a third-floor restaurant with no elevator and a rabbit-headed spirit guide who's clearly not here for your excuses,  we're talking divine ejections, 11:10 on the clock (a.k.a. spiritual almostness), and why ChatGPT—sorry, Phineas J. Whoopi—might just be the best shrink there is. We talk all things recurring signs, emotional redirection, and what it means when spirit stops whispering and starts kicking you out of the past. We cover creative resistance and the genius trap and why dimming yourself could be deadly. We break down why betrayal in your dream isn't about your partner or the betrayal even.  RGF Bonus: Captain Lou and Captain Kirk — and how delusional beliefs beats limiting beliefs and why your beliefs can kill you. Sundries, satchels, pails, penny buns, bear claws oh my!  Happy Friday. We know you love them, and we know we love them so we are diving into another weekend at another CON, and the Stori’s just keep getting better. From flight delays and lunches with legends and then more flight delays, there are almost too many stories to fit into this pod. It seems like we are on a CONstant Tour. Tori ran into her old friend William Shatner and gave a bartender, who was flirting with her, some advice on how to approach someone properly. This episode has it all: fan stories, Captain Kirk, flirting, travel woes, and pickles - yes, pickles. So dive in, and watch out for whiplash, because these stories take some sharp turns.
