We talk a fair bit about chronic pain on this podcast, friends, and some things have become abundantly clear. First, that chronic pain is not taken seriously if you live in a bigger body. Second, while movement is important, the fitness industry and diet culture rob movement of joy. In the place where chronic pain and diet culture meet, where do people who live with pain in bigger bodies go if they want actual advice that isn't simply “lose weight”? I've invited Dana Karen, or DK, Ciccone to join me for a conversation about this topic. DK is a certified Pilates instructor and is trained in pain reprocessing therapy through the Pain Psychology Center. She also wrote the book “You're Meant to Move: A Guide to Conquering Chronic Pain, Increasing Stress Resilience, and Reclaiming an Active Life” so this discussion is right in her wheelhouse.DK shares her personal journey from childhood struggles with food through yo-yo dieting along with chronic pain in adulthood. She knows from experience that clients need to shed the disappointment and grief in their bodies before they can make progress with chronic pain. We talk about the problem with going to the doctor over pain and being told to lose weight as an answer. It's devastating and diet culture contributes to the issue of chronic pain in bigger bodies. DK encourages movement with her clients, through Pilates, and operates a strictly weight-neutral environment and size-inclusive space. She's part of the Body Positive Fitness Alliance to promote that and I agree so much with her beliefs that diet culture, along with medical culture, dismisses chronic pain. It's a very open and revealing conversation, an important one, and I know you'll all appreciate it as much as I do.__About DK Ciccone:Dana Karen (“DK”) Ciccone is a certified Pilates instructor who helps people in pain improve strength, mobility, and well-being in a weight-neutral environment. She's also trained in pain reprocessing therapy through the Pain Psychology Center. Having begun her own journey with chronic back pain as a young teen, she has been exploring ways to help herself and others regain joy of movement for decades. After twenty years in the health sector, DK left a corporate career to follow her passion, later launching Movement Remedies, a chronic pain–focused Pilates studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Her first book, You're Meant to Move: A Guide to Conquering Chronic Pain, Increasing Stress Resilience, and Reclaiming an Active Life, was released December 2023.__Resources discussed in this episode:“You're Meant to Move: A Guide to Conquering Chronic Pain, Increasing Stress Resilience, and Reclaiming an Active Life” by Dana Karen Ciccone Pass to try a free class__Learn more about Dana Karen (DK) Ciccone:Website: MovementRemedies.orgFacebookInstagramLinkedInYouTubeLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

Core and pelvic health is a hugely important, and deeply under-respected aspect of health - but especially women's health, and especially for post-partum women who have undergone drastic changes during pregnancy and childbirth. While pelvic physical therapy SHOULD be a standard of care for women who have given birth, more often we're just told that women who have had babies will “pee a little” when they sneeze or exercise, and to deal with it; while this is common, it's not normal and doesn't have to be a life sentence. In today's episode with pelvic health physiotherapist Anita Lambert, Ashleigh asks her about: What it means to have diastasis recti, pelvic organ prolapse, or other pelvic dysfunction issues Why pelvic health isn't JUST a pregnant woman's issue How to minimize pelvic issues before, during, and after pregnancy and child birth Why the common advice for women to “just do kegels” isn't a good idea How to improve pressure management and core strength for everyone And much more! Anita is a Registered Physiotherapist (Pelvic Health and Orthopaedic) with a focus on women's health, specifically prenatal and postpartum care as well as a Certified Pilates Instructor and Certified in Acupuncture. In today’s episode Pete is joined by author, podcaster, fitness influencer and founder of Couch To Active, Lyn Lindbergh to discuss her business venture and why it means so much to her. Together they explore the benefits of beings active and the importance of being a kind, compassionate person and why love and relationships are the most important thing in our lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Getting active is the one thing you can do that will help your health that is free and has no ill side effects. Although there are all of the benefits associated with getting active, it remains the most underused tool that people use. If you are caught with a chronic illness which sees you in bed every day, it is even more important for you to be active but the barriers you have to get there are sometimes tough to overcome. ‘Should’ is a word of frustration. If you are saying ‘should’ you are saying you are not happy with how things are in your life right now. There are some non negotiable ‘shoulds’ in life. We all should be kind, compassionate and caring to one another. As far as your own life goes, you should have the freedom to explore and do what makes a good life for you. Love the people around you. When you see someone you love decline within themselves, you realise that life really comes down to relationships and love. These are the two things that only really matter at the end of it all. We have issues as a globe that need solving and we have huge problems in the world that need to be addressed but overall, we are way more aligned in agreement on life in general than social media will lead you to believe. It is unfortunate that we have this sense of these huge divides. With listening, there is a way to find commonalities, build bridges and solve those issues. When you really understand that you are nearing the end of your life and you come to think about your bucket list, the concept of skydiving, underwater sea diving and other wild tasks you may have previously put on it become meaningless. BEST MOMENTS “With all of that, it grew me up and I am able to do what I am doing today.” “Do what makes a good life for you.” “I am right where I am supposed to be.” “There is such a need there, I would love to fulfil that need.” “In the end it is really love and the people in my life that really matters.” ABOUT THE GUEST “I am Lyn Lindbergh, the author of the 6x award winning book COUCH to ACTIVE: The Missing Link that Takes You from Sedentary to Active, host of the Health and Fitness Motivation podcast, Blogger, Speaker, Coach, Fitness Influencer, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Pilates Instructor, Certified Group Fitness Instructor, and President of COUCH to ACTIVE. In episode #80, Jill McCauslin and Chris Brown interview Lyn Lindbergh, an expert at creating real change in people's lives. She has three chronic health issues, but still she gets out and exercises every day. Those health issues fuel her compassion for people and her understanding of what it really takes to get moving when life gets in the way. Even with her physical challenges, she has completed the Seattle to Portland 200-mile ride six times, and has completed multiple half-marathons, 10 triathlons, and countless 5K runs. Lyn Lindbergh is the author of the book COUCH to ACTIVE: The Missing Link that Takes You from Sedentary to Active. She is the host of the Health and Fitness Motivation podcast. She is also a Blogger, Speaker, Coach, Fitness Influencer, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Pilates Instructor, Certified Group Fitness Instructor, and President of COUCH to ACTIVE. She provides healthy coaching and motivation with one mission in mind -- to get us exercising in a way that helps us smile. During today's podcast we discussed: Her advice for women over 50 about starting out or for someone who is already active but wants to do more or try something entirely different What to do if you have a chronic injury What's the right amount of cardio? How to get motivated (Do what makes you smile. Even a small amount of movement helps.) She teaches for people who are blind and has found that her camera off zoom classes are popular with sighted people as well. What is Active? 1) Cardio when you get the blood pumping 2) Weight bearing working your muscles and skeletal system 3) Movement - the lymphatic system only pumps so moving is important 4) Flexibility - in your spine and your joints She encourages women starting out to do by doing a little bit to start. "When you try something new, do less than you think you can and give it 48 hours. Listen to your body. Your fastest path to fitness is to stay injury free." Lyn recognizes the fact that most of us have been in and out of fitness throughout our entire lives. She created her program to help others find a space where doing your best doesn't feel like a failure. Lyn feels that we need a place to help us get jazzed about our progress. In this motivational episode, Lyn says "Have compassion for yourself. Compassion is where it starts. Find your joy. Find the type of exercise that works for you. Think about what you enjoy and do that." If you are just starting out or starting back, Lyn suggests trying to work up to 150 minutes a week cardio and two times a week strength training. It's okay to break it down to what you are comfortable with, like 30 minutes five times a week. For links, visit our website: Becoming Elli Fit Strong Women Over 50

This week in the #wednesdaywellbeing show I'll be chatting with internationally certified Personal Trainer Sam Blakey. Sam is the owner of Oobermama. She built up a successful boutique fitness company, Ooberfit, shortly after qualifying as a PT in 2012, whilst living with her family in Singapore,. Prior to returning to the UK, she had built up a reputation as the foremost pre and post natal coach there and her company was voted Best Fitness Provider in Singapore two years in succession, by a national magazine. On returning to the UK in 2017, she settled in Harrogate and spotting a gap in the market, decided to focus on her pre and post natal specialisms. As well as a woman's health coach, she is a Certified Pilates Instructor and one of only nine senior trainers with UKHypopressives. Hypopressives is a unique core-restoring, low pressure breathing technique that helps clients safely reconnect the all important core muscles. With five children of her own, Sam fully understands the toll giving birth has on mums and credits working alongside women's health physios in Singapore as invaluable in ensuring she could give these mums the most appropriate pre and post-natal workouts. Sam also works with women with more severe rehab issues, such as abdominal separation, prolapse, bladder incontinence and poor posture, using Hypopressives to great effect. “When I moved back to the UK, I decided to primarily focus on training women and particularly pre and post-natal fitness, drawing on the experience I had gained working alongside women's health physios and from leading Mums & Tums, Pilates, HIIT and Boxing FIT classes over the past six years. I love helping to give women a leg-up on their journey to fitness through carefully designed fitness programmes, videos and - as a former journalist - informative blogs.” This week I'll also be talking with Laura Hellfeld, a nurse consultant, sleep practitioner, children's yoga teacher and the founder of koko pie families. Her organisation supports the mental wellbeing of parents and caregivers. She specifically specialises in working with neuro divergent children and children who have experienced trauma. Her work reaches a multitude of families and children who are looking for new ways to better connect and communicate within the family. She teachers strategies that encourage and lift up children. We will be chatting about how you can better communicate with your children to support them through challenging times and we will be talking about the training she provides not just for parents but for care givers and therapists so they can create successful and inclusive practices. #wednesdaywellbeing #growth #development #amandajoytherapist #wednesdaywellbeing listen live at 8pm. www.radioshields.co.uk Support the show (https://www.paypal.me/AJHarrison27)

On your journey to a healthy lifestyle it can be very beneficial to hire a personal trainer. But, it is not easy to let down your defenses, push past your fears and put your trust in someone else. You don’t want a trainer who doesn’t listen to you, pushes you too hard or lectures you. Most people's new year's resolutions include a health goal. More often than not though, health goals that come out of new year's resolutions don't last. There is a start and stop roller coaster that can be defeating. In this episode, Sarah is joined by Lara Dalch, a health and lifestyle coach who helps women go from "formerly active" to confident, healthy, and powerful again. Lara is a regular contributor to popular health and wellness website MindBodyGreen. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia, is a Certified Pilates Instructor and received her training to practice health coaching via the State University of New York and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Sarah and Lara discuss mindsets that can support lasting health goals and share stories about their own ups and downs around health.
Women can be awfully good at getting in their own way. We have the skills, the knowledge, the drive, we’re ready to realize our dreams … and yet. We flail, we stall, or worst of all, we sabotage the success we so desperately want. How can we identify what we’re doing wrong and get on the path towards achieving our goals? Sometimes we just need a partner. We found that partner in Lara Dalch. Lara is a health and lifestyle coach to "women on the rise" – women who crave practical tools for feeling healthy, confident, and powerful again so they can have the career and life they really want. As a former entertainment marketing executive and busy entrepreneur, Lara understands the challenges of balancing good health with a busy schedule and is passionate about helping women harness the power of good health to fuel their lives through a practical, “whole life” approach to health Lara is a regular contributor to popular health and wellness website MindBodyGreen and has been a featured speaker at Microsoft, Flywheel Sports, Orangetheory Fitness, the University of Virginia, and the University of California, Berkeley. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia, is a Certified Pilates Instructor, and received her training to practice health coaching via the State University of New York and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. 1:26 Lara has had a very colorful and non-traditional career path. We asked her, how do you go from working at Comedy Central to health and lifestyle coaching? Perhaps not surprisingly, her own hectic lifestyle was the inspiration behind helping others get control of theirs. 3:01 Lara gives us a few more details on how her own improved life was her light bulb moment. “I stopped falling asleep at my desk!” Now she helps others be fully present – and awake – in their lives and work. 5:18 We wanted to know, how do clients know it’s time to seek help? If you’re saying things like, “I’m exhausted all the time,” or “My food is a disaster,” or if you feel like you’re just not “showing up” in work and life the way you want, you might need a Lara. 7:17 Lots of women (and men) undoubtedly fit the criteria of needing a Lara. What keeps us from getting the support we need? Lara says, “They’re afraid they’re not going to show up for themselves.” Hmmmm… having a great idea, getting all excited and prepped, then just not moving forward. Sound familiar? 20:00 Asking for help is often seen as a sign of weakness in modern times. But Lara says it’s one of the most courageous things a high-achiever can do. Lara takes us through the many ways we show we need support and the benefits of getting it. 21:30 On the surface, we should be getting healthier: we have more knowledge, more health care and treatment options…so why are we feeling so bloody awful? First, there is such a thing as “too much information” – Lara tells us how to stop looking outside your body when the answers lie within. 23:40 Lara sees herself as a “partner” in achieving optimal health and wellness – a partner to her client but also to the network of other supports in a woman’s life. Often we have tons of advice from lots of expert sources, but we’re missing the "practical know how" piece. It’s great to have a nutrition plan; even better if you know how to follow it. 25:00 Women over 40 have different challenges than their younger sisters, and they often seem much less doable in our 40s than they did in our 20s. According to Lara, there’s no reason to think you can no longer achieve your goals just because you’re older. The magic pixie dust that’ll get you there? Time. 27:02 Lara actually really enjoys working with women in the 40s and 50s. She gives us the low down on the special gifts women in midlife bring to the table. 27:58 We all know it’s true, even if we can’t seem to make it happen: women who are successful are those who are focused on integrating self-care into their lives. In her talk on the Five Powerful Habits of Women on the Rise, Lara details what successful women have in common. Here’s the good news: it’s all stuff you can have too. Lara shares the details. 30:52s Finally, we asked Lara what a woman should do if she’s considering finding herself a coach. “Be open to going a little out of your comfort zone,” Lara tells us. Openness to experimenting, tuning into your body in a new way, making the decision to move forward toward your goals, those are the beginning to your healthier, more fulfilled future. Want more Lara?
