Have you – or someone you know – ever struggled with a challenging dog? Where you've tried everything from trainers to vets to behaviorists, but life with the dog is still a daily struggle – whether fear, reactivity or feeling like the dog runs the house instead of the humans. If any of this sounds familiar, then you won't want to miss this episode. After struggling for 5 years with her own dog, Maya, Souha met a series of life-changing teachers and mentors. These experiences led her to develop a philosophy to heal the relationship and strengthen the bond we have with our troubled dogs. Souha explains to us her 3-stage method that she calls the Way of Life Method. This system is like hitting the “reset” button on your relationship with your dog – at any age and no matter how long your dog has been part of the family. Souha's Way of Life is a methodical approach to adjusting the expectations we have for our dogs and involves re-establishing our life and our home in a structured way that sets our dogs up for success. This is a completely force-free and non-aversive methodology. In Souha's book, The Way of Life Method, she provides daily schedules, exercises and bonding activities intended to create the connection with your dog that you've always wanted but didn't think was possible. “I kind of just innately knew that through Pilates, I was going to be able to feel better in my body,” says Caitlin Sullivan, a Certified Pilates Instructor and Holistic Hormone Health Coach. Beginning her career as a professional ballet dancer, Caitlin did not always love Pilates. After taking lessons from her ballet teacher, she finally started to appreciate the benefits of the practice leading her to create the menstrual and adrenal health program, The Spring to Life Method.Caitlin recognizes that many women put pressure on themselves to work out every day in the hopes of becoming skinny or seeing massive fitness results. However, excessive strenuous workouts can lead to hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, and burnout. Deeply understanding the complicated relationship we have with our bodies, Caitlin uses Pilates techniques and hormone health coaching to teach women that they're allowed to go easy on themselves and to prioritize feeling better about their bodies.Tune into this week's episode of Self-love for Breakfast for a sensitive conversation on feeling good in your body. And it just completely changed my life because the studio is a classical studio, which is more of the Pilates method. And within a couple of sessions with the teacher here who became my mentor, I felt completely different in my upper back, and I could move without pain. I started building strength and releasing some tension, and I knew that this was the route that I needed to go down.” (14:02 - 14:37 | Caitlin) • “Physical fitness is really about going inward and creating this communication within your body, and learning how to find balance and feel good.” (16:43 - 16:54 | Caitlin) • “The key is to find fulfillment, happiness, and contentment in your body now. University of Notre Dame philosophy professors Meghan Sullivan & Paul Blaschko chat with Trey Elling about THE GOOD LIFE METHOD: REASONING THROUGH THE BIG QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS, FAITH, AND MEANING. Questions include: What is the Good Life Method? (1:25) What is our function as humans? (4:05) How does 'bullshit' keep one from the good life? (7:08) Why are philosophers so enamored with 'caves' as a metaphor? (15:12) How important is financial wealth for the good life? (18:01) Why is taking responsibility an important quality? (24:46) What is the attentive mind as it relates to love? (38:46) What question do they like to ask people to get to know them better? (42:43) What is God? (48:34) Why does stoicism come up when they write about contemplating one's purpose? (53:28) How have Paul and Meghan prepared for death? (1:02:23)

The Good Life Method: Reasoning Through the Big Questions of Happiness, Faith, and Meaning by Meghan Sullivan, Paul Blaschko Two Philosophers Ask and Answer the Big Questions About the Search for Faith and Happiness For seekers of all stripes, philosophy is timeless self-care. Notre Dame philosophy professors Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko have reinvigorated this tradition in their wildly popular and influential undergraduate course “God and the Good Life,” in which they wrestle with the big questions about how to live and what makes life meaningful. Now they invite us into the classroom to work through issues like what justifies our beliefs, whether we should practice a religion and what sacrifices we should make for others—as well as to investigate what figures such as Aristotle, Plato, Marcus Aurelius, Iris Murdoch, and W. E. B. Du Bois have to say about how to live well. Sullivan and Blaschko do the timeless work of philosophy using real-world case studies that explore love, finance, truth, and more. In so doing, they push us to escape our own caves, ask stronger questions, explain our deepest goals, and wrestle with suffering, the nature of death, and the existence of God. Philosophers know that our “good life plan” is one that we as individuals need to be constantly and actively writing to achieve some meaningful control and sense of purpose even if the world keeps throwing surprises our way. For at least the past 2,500 years, philosophers have taught that goal-seeking is an essential part of what it is to be human—and crucially that we could find our own good life by asking better questions of ourselves and of one another. This virtue ethics approach resonates profoundly in our own moment. The Good Life Method is a winning guide to tackling the big questions of being human with the wisdom of the ages.
About our guests: Meghan Sullivan is the Wilsey Family College Chair in Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, director of the God and the Good Life Program, and director of the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study. She has published works in many leading philosophy journals. Her first book, Time Biases, was published by Oxford University Press. Her work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the John Templeton Foundation. Sullivan has degrees from the University of Virginia, Oxford University, and Rutgers University, where she earned a PhD in philosophy. She studied at Balliol College, Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar. Paul Blaschko is an assistant teaching professor in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. He heads up curriculum design and digital pedagogy for the God and the Good Life Program, and has recently been working to develop similar curricula at universities across the nation as part of an initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Blaschko completed an MA in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, a PhD at the University of Notre Dame in 2018, and held the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship prior to being appointed to his current position. About The Good Life Method: For seekers of all stripes, philosophy is timeless self-care. Jeanette Bronée is on a mission to make self-care the foundation for how we perform–at work, in the studio, at home, and on-the-go. Defying the myth of burning the candle at both sends held by many creatives, she works with clients using her Path for Life Method, which integrates three ingredients to create sustainable change in the way we eat, perform and thrive every day: Food-Knowledge, Mindfulness, and Habit-Shifting. . Bronée's shift to this mindset stems from her own experience. Like many of our Creative Careers podcast guests, Bronée felt lost in her life and career in her late twenties, unsure how she could move forward in a way that mattered to her. When cancer took the lives of her parents and threatened hers, she realized she wanted to be part of the change that needed to happen in how we take care of ourselves–at work, at home, and on the go. It was this experience that made her realize it's good to keep asking the "big" questions in life; to keep looking for how to continue to grow. . In this podcast, Jeanette talks about her path to being a creative entrepreneur and how she works with others to instill a foundation of self-care.
