In this episode of our Mindful Moments series, we explore the profound practice of "Listen Deeply." Today's tip encourages you to embrace the art of deep listening, a key aspect of mindfulness that enhances your connection to the present moment. Find a peaceful spot, perhaps away from the usual hustle, and allow yourself a few minutes to just listen. Closing your eyes might help sharpen your focus. As you sit quietly, try to distinguish each sound in your environment, from the subtle hum of a refrigerator to the melodious chirping of birds or even the distant rush of traffic. Approach each sound without judgment, experiencing them as mere waves of auditory information. This practice not only heightens your auditory awareness but also enriches your appreciation for the soundscape around you, fostering a deeper sense of presence and mindfulness in your daily life. Join us to discover how simply listening can open up a world of sensory experiences and bring a calm awareness to your routine. Embracing these small mindful practices each day can lead to decreased stress and a deeper sense of happiness. Listen deeply to the screaming mothers and the whirring of the drones. Listen deeply to the news man's lies and the crashing of the bulldozers. Listen deeply to the tanks and missiles as they are rolled into position. Listen deeply to the dying fish and the fruit bats dropping out of trees from the heat. Listen deeply to the gasping biosphere and the reverberating cries of the long-dead indigenous. Listen deeply to the vibrations all around you and to the vibrations deep within yourself. This is a holy place. This is a holy moment. It demands your reverence, even amid the smell of exhaust fumes and landfill and of rotting whales washing up on the shore and of rotting human corpses in Gaza. Even amid the blaring screens and the smirking lies of podium pontiffs and Pentagon propagandists. Even amid the dead-eyed dystopioids marching through life sedated by smartphones and sitcoms and sports and snacks and synthetics. So listen. Listen deeply. There are messages here. Buried in the code. Hidden in the metadata. Whisperings of something big. Something lurking just behind the chatter. Something ancient, yet entirely unanticipated. Listen deeply, kind friend, because mark my words: even within our oceans choked with plastic, even within our minds choked with media, even within our hearts choked with capitalism, even within our souls choked with fraudulence, there are still leviathans. Reading by Tim Foley.

Have you ever felt the transformative power of music not just as a soundtrack to your life, but as a key to unlock deep, personal healing and growth? Can a song, a melody, or a rhythm truly spark a revolution within us, challenging us to confront and transcend the boundaries of racism, mindfulness, and our own potential for change?Today, Dr. Scott welcomes Grammy-nominated artist, best-selling author, and visionary speaker, Justin Michael Williams for a fascinating conversation about how we, as a community, can harness the emotional impact of music and mindfulness to not just envision, but actively create a world brimming with possibility and devoid of division.Together, they explore the intricate dance between individual change and collective evolution, shedding light on the role of community and the unifying power of music in the journey towards transformation. Since I was a young maiden, I attempted to find an alternative solution to [w]a(r). I innocently thought what about a chess match or just a one on one wrestling match. However, my father would point out the limitations to this approach. Here decades later, understanding even more the sobering truth of the wizard of O(z)! As I looked beyond the beyond the VEil, I was left with a deep knowing to encourage everyone to practice LOVE. See it was the wizard's idea to script out the great divide. Which was an invitation to oppress, divide, argue and forget. The divine exists in all of us. No matter what you want to call the divinity…it is a power that cannot be destroyed and exists in all of you. That POWER is LOVE. As inspired, take many moments to reacquaint yourself with the mystery that runs through all things. If you choose to embrace that POWER…you will harness LOVe. May you hold it with great care and share it with reckless abandon. May you see it within yourself, in others and everywhere. As I see it…you are divine LOVE. I have the pleasure of introducing Season 4 with a rockstar. Please meet Brian Thompson, JD, CFP® of Brian Thompson Financial (BTF). He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and tax attorney. Brian runs a truly unique firm, but I will get to that in a bit.Brian and I have both struggled as African American brothers in the financial industry. We have both persevered and achieved happiness in our own lives, which has translated to success for the clients we serve.Brian and I dig deep into our personal struggles and how it has affected us equally, as well as differently, while growing our financial practices. We also demonstrate a brotherhood that holds each other accountable. On a side note, our struggles have brought on a financial acuity that cannot be learned in any one book. Now more about Brian and his awesome firm...BTF focuses on helping a new generation of LGBTQ+, mission-driven entrepreneurs living fulfilling lives both professionally and personally. He and his firm do this by abiding by four core business values.During this episode we go through Brian's core values, which truly embody the business he runs, life decisions, happiness and the lessons he has learned along the way:Lead by example: We take care of ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually to be the best we can in serving our clients and show them by example what living a fulfilling life looks like.Choose Courage: We embrace our uniqueness and dare to be who we are in the face of uncertainty, discomfort, risk, and emotional exposure. Belonging in this firm doesn't require you to change who you are but to be who you are.Listen Deeply & Speak with Care: We come to each conversation with an open mind rather than the “right answer.” We tell the whole truth to ourselves, our clients, and each other.Appreciate all that we have: Rather than focus on extraordinary moments, we appreciate the everyday joy of showing up for our clients and helping make their lives better. We can all learn by Brian's core values. Thanks for listening!#surroundingyourselfwithgoodpeople #mentoring #mentorship #positivity #missiondrivenSupport the showDid you know you can now Help Us Continue Making Awesome Content for Listeners Affected by Grief! Thanks for listening! Christine Valters Paintner is joined by author Claudia Love Mair for a series of video conversations. Each month they take up a new book by or about a voice of color. The community is invited to purchase and read the books in advance and participate actively in this journey of deepening, discovery, and transformation. This month we are reading Soul Talk: How to Have the Most Important Conversation of All by Kirk Byron Jones. “Though your soul may be more mystery to you than familiar reality, you are not a stranger to soul moments. When you smile for no reason, know something for sure without having learned it, or feel peace amid broken pieces, your soul is manifesting itself. Your soul is your pool of deep wisdom, peace, and joy within. Your soul is the part of you God held last as God released your free flight into the world.” ~ from Soul Talk: How to Have the Most Important Conversation of All Too often, the most difficult person to speak with honestly and deeply is yourself. And yet, if you are to live your finest, freshest, and fullest life, it is essential to maintain an empowering inner dialogue. Soul Talk presents 7 enlivening steps for creating and continuing soulfully satisfying self-communication:1. Be Still.2. Lay Burdens Down.3. Listen Deeply.4. Don't Run Away.5. Be Honest.6. Be Gentle.7. Welcome New Truth. To Connect With Your Soul is to take Advantage of the Supreme Empowerment Opportunity of a Lifetime. AbbeyoftheArt.com/Lift-Every-Voice
We're talking about our fourth lesson of loving well in this episode: Learning to Listen Deeply. Listening well is a skill and a superpower that makes us better colleagues, friends, and parents. It's also a skill that goes both ways; as you practice listening well, you'll also gain the skill of listening to yourself. As you listen, you'll start to tap into what you really want, need, and connecting with more meaning and purpose in your life. Tune in to learn more about this skill and how you can quickly apply into your own life. Key Takeaways: Listening well is a superpower and a skill that you can get better at. As you listen more to others, you'll listen more to yourself. When we listen well, there is no responsibility to "fix" the situation. We often hide the truth from ourselves. Those who listen well to us can help us uncover these truths. As we listen well to ourselves, we can also uncover these truths. Sarah Dessen quote: “This is the problem with dealing with someone who is actually a good listener. They don't jump in on your sentences, saving you from actually finishing them, or talk over you, allowing what you do manage to get out to be lost or altered in transit. Instead, they wait, so you have to keep going.” Kevin Kelly's "Rule of 3" in conversation: “To get to the real reason, ask a person to go deeper than what they just said. Then again, and once more. What is your deepest desire—the one that keeps you up at night because you want it so badly? Maybe you know immediately, or maybe you haven't allowed yourself to think about it for a while. In this episode on the classic short and spiritual novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo, allow yourself to listen to your heart and hear the dreams it is speaking to you just as Santiago does at the beginning of his journey to his own dream. Santiago faces great discouragements on his journey—his entire fortune is stolen from him not once, not twice, but thrice—but as he forges on, he learns that everything going on around him, even the things that seem bad at the time, is the universe's way of leading him to exactly where he needs to be. As his faith in the universe and his own heart grows stronger, Santiago becomes a master of taking leaps of faith. He transforms himself and in so doing transforms the world around him, just like a true alchemist. As you listen to this meditation, you'll be invited to get quiet and listen to your own deep desires in the same way that Santiago does in the book. It's this deep listening that leads him to adventure into new territories, both physical and spiritual. This episode is a reminder to listen to the deepest murmurings of desire that you feel. If you desire it, there's a reason for that and you'll make the universe a better, truer, happier place by fulfilling it.What did you think of this episode? Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You'll recognize yourself in these true-life stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. I'm your host, Diane Wyzga.Today my guest is Sue Heatherington, writer, catalyst and thinking partner for pioneers, innovators and change-makers who want to cultivate a better change perspective in the world. In 2018 Sue coined the term “Quiet Disruptor” as a short-hand introduction to her unusually broad back story, which includes 10 years as a pioneering public service chief executive. Now, Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting is the title of her newly published book.Sue is joining us all the way from Swansea, Wales where she writes daily thought-provoking blog posts while inviting us to explore her valley through the lens of her camera. I've invited Sue to talk with us about the practice of writing, changing the narrative around conversations and belonging, her manifesto, her book, and most significantly doing it all without shouting. Welcome to the podcast, Sue!Minutes 38:2400 to 4:02 Intro and AlpacasSue (along with her podcaster husband, Steve Heatherington) are raising about 45 AlpacasDid you know that alpacas hum? They also anxiously look around: “Where's the baby! Where's the baby!”Some cluck to their babies weeks before the babies are bornSue learns so much from them4:02 to 6:28 Start From Where You AreHost: One of these fine days we will return to travel and Wales - among other places - is on my hiking itinerary. If I met up with you on one of your favorite walks, where is it and what might I notice about you?Sue smiles!Sue's valley makes she feel so good, to be in her own skinSue strolls to be where she is instead of fast walking to get somewhereSue is a wanderer, taking everything in, open to seeing what she needs to noticeSue is a stopper and a looker and a listenerSue's intention is to be very presentHost: Sue's blog posts with her photography comes from a place of slowing down, pausing and being aware.6:28 to 20:05 A Bit of Back Story. Before we get to your manifesto and your book, entitled Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting, I'd like to know a bit about how you coined the term “Quiet Disruptor” in 2018. Would you share with us how that came about and what you discovered about yourself in that process.A beautiful defining moment that Sue didn't see comingSue had gone through challenging times professionally and personally and not expecting beauty to emergeSue's approach (how can we do this differently) is not traditional and may make folks uncomfortable, like The Emperor's Clothes storyHealth, family, and Sue's own purpose, direction and income challenges together created a constellation of taxing and trying times and then Sue's diagnosis of breast cancerOut of all of this acute chaos, in her recovery time Sue was exploring “Now what?”Sue joined an online community with Bernadette Jiwa and coined “Quiet Disruptor” as a means of introducing herself with honesty but without dramaAlso reading David Hieatt and The DO Lectures As well as Susan Cane and her Quiet Power book Being a Quiet Disruptor is Sue's life - in a quiet voiceAfter Sue began using this phrase she was stunned by how much people were drawn to it and wanted to use it as well: I can be a change-maker my own way; I feel seen and heard. Quiet Disruptor changes how people perceive themselves because change is theirs to say and do - call out the status quo, etc. but differentlyNow the “do” happens: as a way of changing the conversation for folks Sue wrote a Manifesto to enable those who want to be seen and heard to have a way to quietly disruptSue was seeing that the voices of the Quiet Disruptors were experiencing their time having come as a collective connective, to say, do, explore and createOne person can no longer be The HeroOrganizations will have to be on the forefront of the global changeHost: an unrealistic burden to expect The One to have the answers, especially when imposed by society. If The One has no answers or, not the right answers they might push, shove, shout or masqueradeSue is extending a welcome to The OthersCome on board and work together, all voices are to be heard 20:05 to 36:30 Manifesto for Quiet DisruptorsThe word Manifesto is strong, a public declaration of intention, of design. Would you give us the opportunity to hear your Manifesto.Sue reads her Manifesto as an advocate for Quiet DisruptorsWe need Quiet Disruptors and here's why.Host: There is so much in the invitation to come along. People drawn like filings to a magnet. Sue named qualities or attributes shared by the Quiet Disruptors: stubborn courage, do work quietly and insistently. Question: How might we notice change makers among us or even notice if we could be a change maker? Those who have read Sue's book and claim the Quiet Disruptor label for themselves, are self-identifyingBeing seen and heard is keySue uses tree and fruit as metaphor to explain how to notice the others. The Others have certain characteristics which we recognize: thoughtfully curious, how they are in the world, with others, those who ask the questions, delve deeper, join the dots, see the bigger picture, expression of creativity, the effect on othersHost: I imagine you have people and situations in mind. Question: would you share a few who are already carrying on as a Quiet Disruptors. The book highlights who is already out there - some well known, some not so well known - making courageous connectionsOne example: Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, MD: as a practicing physician could see her patients in a way colleagues could not. Also saw that her colleagues were unseen and unheard and became protectively hardened. Remen shifted this experience and radically changed clinical practice in the United StatesHost: One woman begins the shift and then change happens over the course of time. Similarly in the legal profession. Litigators who learned to tell their own stories - doing an archeological dig on themselves - were better able to tell their clients' stories. Being seen and being heard goes toward our understanding and being understood. So often people struggle to listen deeplyThe traditional model is waiting to get the next word inCultivating your curiosity has more value in the questionsWe are at a space of asking deeper questionsQuestion: Let's assume you might have to work with or encounter someone who is not so agreeable to this notion of disrupting quietly, how would you suggest working with folks like that to get them to see the necessity of hopeful, quiet change? Here we are, at the end of the road but not the journey. Thank you for listening to Part 1 of this episode of Stories From Women Who Walk with your host Diane Wyzga and my guest Sue Heatherington, Quiet Disruptor, blogger, author of the book Quiet Disruptors:Creating Change Without Shouting, and a catalyst for pioneers, innovators and change-makers who joined us from her small valley in Swansea, Wales. Her book Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting was published in January 2021 and has been read across the globe. Her short daily pause points combine words of inspiration, provocation and encouragement, with a beautiful photograph from her home in the valley, which she shares with her husband, learning disabled brother and a herd of alpacas.Quiet Disruptors: Creating Change Without Shouting is available on Amazon in printed and Kindle versions. The last two eighteen months have seen an explosion of interest in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in employers across North America. This has often been characterized by bold statements by corporations committing to creating greater equity both for employees and for the communities they operate in.But you can't do diversity by declaration - it requires concrete action by leaders and colleagues on a daily basis. Given the workload most of us struggle with, it can seem daunting to many to have to now account for diversity in our everyday actions.Small wonder then that so many employees are choosing to become part of "The Great Resignation" driven in large part by a feeling that they no longer belong with their existing employer. It is this challenge that Maureen Berkner Boyt addresses through her company The Moxie Exchange, that empowers everyone to become more inclusive and create a culture of belonging. In this conversation Maureen and I discuss the six fundamental skills leaders need to make inclusion a reality and drill a bit deeper into three of them - Listen Deeply, Stay Curious and Consciously Include. You'll hear how you can have the information you need to be inclusive at your fingertips when you need it rather than rely on your memory of a training course you may have taken a few months ago.You can find out more about Maureen and her company at https://themoxieexchange.com

On the Secret Witch Show today, we have the wonderful Charlie Merton. Charlie began teaching yoga in 2011 after a decade of self-practice. Since then, her style has evolved into a slow, creative hatha and breath-based flow practice. She offers a unique combination of integral practices in which people chant, breath, move and relax deeply into their bodies. She has a Masters in Music Psychotherapy and is certified in various yogic disciplines such as Sivananda, Yin, Restorative yoga, Yoga nidra, pranayama, Kundalini and Tantra, as well as being a certified crystal and sound therapist. She runs her own yoga practice in London and also enjoys playing her many gongs. We dived into a *lot* in this show - from how we can be so disconnected from our bodies via trauma that we can't create healing magic, to how our bodies are a beautiful guidance system to be nurtured, that are simply inviting us to listen in. Enjoy! What You'll Learn from this Episode: We can become very disconnected from our bodies in our trauma, and this leads us to dissociate and go away to some other planet. It's a defense mechanism - a way of checking out - and it's common, often, especially when we feel *everything* so very deeply. We can tell what's *for us* and what's *not* from the sensations in our body - often we ignore these, but even still, we *know* on a deep Soul level - we just often ignore it. This might show up as us “asking for permission” for what's really aligned for us - e.g. Charlie shared her own unique experience of wanting permission from her parents to not get married - because we are so used to people pleasing - and often don't have enough faith in our own power. If we don't listen to our bodies, we will pay the price through the manifestation of dis-ease in the body - for example, being unable to breathe, suffering panic attacks and unpleasant sensations and illness - and even accidents that may “wake us up” - and crack us open At any point, though, we can begin again to learn to tune in and listen with our Body Guidance System - our heart compass - and trust our Soul's instincts to be able to feel into different things in life. The way to listening in is really unique and individual, but we can begin to openly, lovingly and curiously listen to sensation as a messenger about the mystery of ourselves! A good question to ask is: “how is my body responding to this?” - and we can ask this question of everything - including whether we are following our Soul's path. We need to create safety for ourselves to feel everything - digesting our emotions is a practice - and emotional intelligence is a skill for life! Bringing our awareness to basic level sensation is a powerful practice to create autonomy with our nervous system, and we get better at feeling - and welcoming all feelings - and working to our edge. Resources and things that we spoke about: Charlie's Website: https://nadapriya.com/ Thank you for listening, we'd love to know what comes alive for you in this week's episode, so please let us know! In our on-going COVID-19 mini-Season at ‘Learning Is The New Working,’ ‘From What-If To What Now?’ we’re exploring what the massive change rippling through the worlds of Work and Learning looks like on the ground. This episode, we get a unique perspective from author, mentor and free-thinker Oscar Trimboli, who is 100% all about using what he calls “the gift of Listening.” This conversation also starts a mini-season about Listening on the podcast, incidentally, as I think it’s such an important topic; and as Oscar tells us, we listen at 125 words a minute… but can think at 900. Essentially, Oscar believes that if we learned to Listen better, we’d be able to see positive change in homes, workplaces and the world itself—and that leadership teams need to focus their attention and their listening on building organisations that have impact and create powerful legacies for the the people they serve, today and, more importantly, for future generations. An Aussie marketing and technology industry veteran, with over 30 years' experience across general management, sales, marketing and operations for major brands including Microsoft, PeopleSoft, Polycom, Professional Advantage and Vodafone, Oscar now consults with organisations such as AstraZeneca, Google, and Qantas, from his Sydney home base. Let’s ‘Listen Deeply’ together, then, to Oscar, and it’s a Listen that involves a fascinating mental experiment and some great war stories, and what he has to say about: his quest, which has already touched 1.7 million; the many costs of not Listening, from the start of COVID to project failure; his definition of Listening, which centers on the willingness to have your mind changed; the invisible internal and external distractions that keep us from really Listening (but also, some tools to help!); silence, and its different cultural weights; the deep business value of listening beyond the first few words to what hasn’t been said yet; some excellent tips on how to make Zoom effective for you and your team; and much more.

Vernice Jones is a Director and faculty for adult development at Georgetown University’s Institute for Transformational Leadership. She is an Associate at Cultivating Leadership, a global, deliberately developmental, complexity-based organization. She is a master certified coach and a close friend. In this episode, we tackle a courageous conversation about racism in America. As Vernice shares upfront, this episode is about the experience of one person. It's also about a collective experience of trauma and what it takes to heal it. We discuss what it's like to be the mother of two African American boys, fearing for their lives. We discuss the role of leaders in times of crisis: to know that they are not seeing the full picture, to reach out to listen, to be curious about the experience of others, to dig deep for what matters, to engage in and be moved by pivotal conversations so new solutions can emerge.

When we go on the Way of Love, we cross boundaries, listen deeply, and live like Jesus. Whether God calls us to go across the street or across the world, we are sent beyond our circles and comfort to witness to the love, justice, and truth of God with our lips and with our lives. In this episode, Bishop Michael Curry and hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss “going” on the Way of Love. We learn about both sides of the practice: having the faith to step out into the world and being able to receive the gift of hospitality graciously. Bishop Curry tells a story of trust - about coming to understand that God is already present, wherever we are sent. We also hear from the Rev. Katie Nakamura Rengers, founder of The Abbey, a church and coffee shop ministry in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. We learn about the ways this community both serves and is served by loving neighbors -- neighbors who might be looking for more than an excellent cup of coffee. Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, is a physician at Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the USA, and a faculty member of New York University School of Medicine. She writes about medicine and the doctor-patient connection for the New York Times, Slate Magazine, and other publications. Danielle is co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Bellevue Literary Review, the first literary journal to arise from a medical setting. She is the author of a collection of books about the world of medicine. Her most recent book is, "What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear." Danielle highlights just how vital good communication is in the world of medicine. The great majority of malpractice lawsuits stem from miscommunication, far more so than actual errors in clinical practice. This is communication between doctors but importantly, between doctors and their patients. There is an enormous cost of not listening in medicine. Danielle shares one particular study in which an extra twenty minutes spent between doctor and patient prior to a surgical procedure went on to save those patients from an additional three days in hospital, and reduced the amount of opioid painkillers they required. Leaving aside the health outcomes, the financial impact illustrated by this study is substantial. Before a patient consultation, Danielle makes sure she has read up on all the relevant notes and charts. In this way she can listen undistracted while they talk, focused and looking at the patient, not looking at charts or a computer screen. Danielle's research finds that doctors tend to interrupt their patients within eight to ten seconds of their speaking. She also notes that if left uninterrupted, patients will only speak for a minute to ninety seconds - a length of time Danielle thinks we can all aim to listen for! Dedicate a minute to undistracted, 'full frontal listening', and the speaker will give you the information they want to share and that you need. Danielle thinks of it as an investment in the future relationship. Danielle shares a story of her father's experience in hospital, and how accompanying him gave Danielle a patient's perspective on things. It's very easy for a doctor who sees many patients every day to not listen deeply in each and every interaction, because there are so many. For the patient, however, this time is precious. Tune in to Learn How to get around technology, to listen undistracted Why Danielle asks her patients "how much do you want to know?" How listening to a patient reduces anxiety How Danielle is teaching new doctors to listen About listening to the unsaid for life-threatening issues
