“Ukraine is like porcelain, easy to break yet impossible to destroy.” —Slava Leontyev Join us for a Q&A with the co-director and the producer. Under roaring fighting jets as war ravages their homeland, three artists—Slava, Anya and Andrey—stay behind in their native Ukraine, defiantly finding beauty amid destruction. Armed with art, cameras and—for the first time in their lives—guns, they show that while it's easy to frighten people, it's harder to destroy their passion for living. Nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary feature, Porcelain War has already won the 2024 Sundance Grand Jury Prize. The film is a stunning tribute to the resilience of the human spirit, embodying the enduring hope and passion of ordinary people living through extraordinary circumstances. From the Academy Award-winning producer of The Cove and the Emmy Award-winning producer of Chasing Ice, and the team behind the Grammy Award-winning Quincy, Porcelain War is one of the most decorated documentary features of 2024. Join our journey through the captivating world of art and its profound influence on societal transformation with Ken Grossinger, a strategist and documentary producer with a wealth of experience. This episode promises to reveal the often underestimated power of art to incite and sustain meaningful change. We reminisce about the civil rights movement and the United Farm Workers, where anthems and theatrical performances weren't just acts of expression but were essential to the courage and unity of those fighting for justice. Ken provides insights into how these artistic endeavors have left an indelible mark on our society. Our conversation takes an exciting turn into the realm of cinema, where we unpack the extraordinary impact of films like "The China Syndrome" and "Nine to Five" and "Chasing Ice" on public awareness and activism. These cultural landmarks demonstrate the unique ability of movies to inform and mobilize, creating ripples of change that extend far beyond the silver screen. We also discuss the evolution of environmental activism's artistic expression. From silent landscapes to resonant songs in the campaign against Alaska's Pebble Mine, we see how art has become an integral voice in the chorus for environmental preservation. The episode rounds off with a look at the transformative role of museums and foundations in community activism and social justice. Museums are stepping out of the shadows to become beacons of progress, taking an active stance on pressing issues by engaging with the stories and struggles of the communities they represent. Through the lens of initiatives like the Art for Justice Fund and the JPB Foundation's integrated funding approach, we uncover how strategic collaborations between artists, philanthropists, and activists are crafting a new narrative for social change, proving that the brush, the lens, and the pen are mightier than ever before. If you enjoyed this show, please leave a positive review and share with your friends. While Sarinah and Hannah are on vacation, we decided to rebroadcast one of our "best of" episodes with Dr. Sylvia Earle, you'll understand why in a minute... Close your eyes, and picture yourself underwater. See the light sway above you, as it gets darker and darker the further down you go. Welcome to the deep waters of the ocean, a place where today's guest has spent a considerable part of her life, swimming alongside the ocean's many flora and fauna. Dr Sylvia Earle is an icon in marine biology and ocean conservation and has been featured in popular documentaries like Seaspiracy, Mission Blue and Chasing Ice. She has won many awards and accolades including the Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science, the National Audubon Society's Rachel Carson Award, and has authored more than 150 publications including a new book alongside National Geographic called Ocean: A Global Odyssey. She's also the first woman to walk on the ocean floor. The team here at Earth to Humans is a HUGE fan of Dr. Earle and her work and we've had a hard time containing our excitement in anticipation of this episode's release. We talk octopus intelligence, empathy in science and reasons why there is still so much reason to hope (even though everything seems really f@$%ed). She thinks we humans can overcome the mountain of our environmental negligence, and after this interview, we might be inclined to believe her. There is scientific consensus on climate change and its human cause, but how to understand and address global warming remains a divided topic in American life. Art and religion are two lenses through which new perspectives on climate change might be discovered. In this episode, we talk to photographer James Balog and climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe about how their work creates connections across different ways of knowing, such as art, science, or religion. How can these connections—along with a better understanding of influences such as personal geographies and socioeconomic backgrounds—inform meaningful ways to confront climate change? Technology has changed the way we think and interact with one another, and social media platforms are intentionally engineered to be addictive and manipulative. Those messages are in the documentary "The Social Dilemma," which was created by Jeff Orlowski's filmmaking company Exposure Labs. "Big social," says Orlowski, is transforming our information ecosystem. He tells Vivian Schiller, executive director of Aspen Digital, that an unregulated social media landscape cannot co-exist with a healthy, functioning democracy. Orlowski's team is also behind the climate change films "Chasing Ice" and "Chasing Coral."

Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/title/81254224Información: https://www.thesocialdilemma.com/Center for Humane Technology: https://www.humanetech.com/the-social-dilemmaPROGRAMA GENERAL DE LA SEMANA EN FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/events/s/the-social-dilemma-suicidio-di/2746039835719479/?ti=iclCon los psicoterapistas y consejeros de salud mental EN NEW YORK-USA:Dr. Jorge Piña, LMC, LPKarina Rieke, LMHC, CHTRamón Blandino, LMHC, LFMTCOCREA: CoronaCreativosOnline / Lunes a viernes @ 8:30 pm. Jeff Orlowski is a director, producer and cinematographer ~ For the finale of season one, I am so excited to introduce you to the man who recently brought a documentary to Netflix that speaks to issues around the attention economy on social media. If you’re a fan of this podcast, it’s likely you’ve heard of it and if you haven’t - get on it, like, now! The film is called ‘The Social Dilemma’, and today we are speaking with the Director - Jeff Orlowski. Jeff Orlowski is the director, producer, and cinematographer of award-winning films, Chasing Coral and Chasing Ice, which tackle issues that pertain to our climate crisis. He is also the founder of Exposure Labs, a production company dedicated to impact through film. Jeff’s latest release is called ‘The Social Dilemma’, and it had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Through interviews with tech experts and critics, The Social Dilemma takes a wide lens on the human impact of social networks. It is now on Netflix, where it is described as a documentary-drama hybrid where tech experts sound the alarm on their own creations. In this episode, Jeff talks about his own personal relationship to social media and tech. He unpacks what tech is helping us to accomplish, what it is looking for and how it exists in competition with the rest of our lives. Jeff speaks to the critique that ‘The Social Dilemma’ is oversimplified. He also talks us through something that sounds as terrifying as it is - a resurrection algorithm.  Shownotes: Check out Jeff's production company, Exposure Labs, and DEFINITELY watch 'The Social Dilemma' on Netflix.  Email any reflections on this show (or 'The Social Dilemma') to selfiereflective@gmail.com. A note from Lucy:  Hello listener. This episode - episode 35 - will be the last release in what we’re calling Season 1 of Selfie Reflective. We’re hitting pause on the show for now - but hopefully not forever! I love this podcast and I am so passionate about the subject matter. In my notebook I am still collecting the names of people I want to interview and topics I want to cover, and this list easily exceeds ten pages! I hope that one day I will be able to reignite this show for Season Two, and that I’ll also be able to bring even more depth to the way I host this show. I believe with my whole heart that the subjects that are being presented on this show are desperately important - and that feeling seems to be one that is shared by not just Jeff Orlowski (our final season one guest (who is kind of a big deal)) - but every guest who has generously given their time and knowledge to this show. Thank you so much for listening.

Jeff Orlowski is the director of the newly released Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, which explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations. He also served as director, producer, and cinematographer of the Sundance Award-Winning and Oscar short listed films, Chasing Ice and Chasing Coral. In this conversation, Jeff and I discuss where he got the idea to make The Social Dilemma, why his team decided to use the unique stylistic choices of dramatizations and animations, and the process of taking a ton of disjointed interviews on broad/complex topics and weaving them together to create one of the most talked about documentaries of the year. In this "Encore Episode," we are replaying Bryan's interview with director Jeff Orlowski to commemorate the September 9, 2020 Netflix premiere of his documentary The Social Dilemma. The interview was recorded in February at the Sundance Film Festival before the film had a distribution deal with Netflix. We are pleased to re-release Jeff's interview so listeners can hear what went into the filmmaking process before they watch the film. The original show notes from the interview are below.   Jeff Orlowski is a documentary filmmaker whose latest film, The Social Dilemma, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The film weaves interviews with tech founders into dramatically portrayed scenes with Hollywood actors to reveal disturbing information about how technology shapes and manipulates society. Jeff won an Emmy for his debut documentary, Chasing Ice, which follows one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. His second documentary, Chasing Coral, documents the vanishing coral reefs around the world. What you will learn: How his experience at camp as a child shaped his world view. How the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which occurred four blocks from his high school, influenced his education and career trajectory as a journalist. How his friendship with anthropologist and primatologist Jane Goodall influenced his educational choices, as well as his approach to storytelling. How listening to Jane Goodall’s lectures numerous times taught him the importance of giving audiences hope when telling a story of crisis. How his math and science background helped him on location as a documentarian in remote parts of the world. How the connections he made as a student at Stanford University allowed him unique access into the tech world for purposes of interviewing the subjects of his latest film, The Social Dilemma. Why he doesn’t label himself a documentary filmmaker, even though he has directed four documentaries. The funding challenges facing documentary filmmakers. After a savage summer of devastating fires, universities, society and even some Australian states have recognised that the country needs a social and economic framework dedicated to the conditions of habitability - so how might the imperatives of climate change remake the social contract for universities in the 21st century?COVID-19 has not only shown that public goods are the key to well being and health, but it has revealed that the consent of populations and their willingness to participate in collective action is just as crucial to effecting transformation as is expertise. What does that mean for universities and their purpose in the 21st century? What new set of obligations and expectations will students face? And what should we be asking of our institutions as we confront the implications of climate? These are the questions the sector should be asking as we face lengthening months and possibly years in which the world of higher education in Australia, and the lives of all those who rely on it, is likely to grow more precarious rather than less.Special thanks to The New Social Contract guests:Professor Mark Howden, Director of the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University&Associate Professor Lauren Rickards, co-leader of the Climate Change and Resilience research program of the Centre for Urban ResearchFor show notes and transcript visit: https://www.uts.edu.au/partners-and-community/initiatives/impact-studios/projects/new-social-contract-podcastNews and audio grabs used in the podcast feature the voices of:Abc journalists Hamish Mc Donald on ABC News in the news item: Flames rip through towns, fears death toll will rise as bushfires rage on' ABC NewsAbc journalist Karina Carvalho on ABC News in news item: Flames rip through towns, fears death toll will rise as bushfires rage on' ABC NewsJournalist Eddy Michah Jnr from DW News in the news item: ‘East Africa braces for severe tropical storms' URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkXx7MzJaxsFormer US President Barack Obama, giving a speech at the. 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. We’ve all heard that hopping on a plane is one of the worst things we can do for the climate. So how do we justify the environmental costs of world travel? Seeing the effects of global warming for yourself could be one argument for getting on that flight. For James Sano of the World Wildlife Fund, things got real on a trip to Antarctica. “I was expecting lots of crevasses and big chunks of ice,” Sano recalls. “But then I suddenly found myself with my skis on a beach. And in the ensuing hundred or so years, the glacier had receded significantly so that there was no ice fall.” Jennifer Palmer of Women for Wildlife has traveled the world spreading awareness about global warming. She believes that helping to connect those who are being hit hardest by it makes the carbon cost worthwhile. “There is a piece of me that sits on a plane and says I’m contributing to this,” Palmer admits. “[But] when you think about it in the grand context of the people that I'm helping have the experiences, and they’re becoming ambassadors for these places. They're coming back and they’re telling stories and they’re creating videos and they’re having dialogues. And they’re creating change.” One memorable experience for Palmer was sharing the film “Chasing Ice” with a community of Bajau people in Indonesia. “We actually screened the film in the middle of the ocean on their settlement on stilts,” she remembers. “We tied up bed sheets…and they were literally hanging out on boats.” “To see the looks on their faces as they learned about what is a glacier and how that’s connected to the issues that they’re going on and seeing…to make that connection and to be able to have a dialogue with that community was very special and heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.” Jim Sano had some travel advice for those who want to lighten their carbon travel footprint. Take fewer, long trips if you can, he suggests. Avoid flying first class. And consider your routing: “Many people don't know that a great majority of your carbon footprint is associated with takeoffs and landings,” he reminded the audience. “So while your airfare may be less if you do a one stop, if you take a direct flight, your footprint would be far less.” Norbu Tenzing, whose father was one of the first people to reach the top of Mt. Everest in the company of Sir Edmund Hillary, welcomes travelers, trekkers and tourists to his beloved Himalayas,“.unequivocally, the highest and most beautiful mountains in the world.” But, he adds, it’s vital to travel responsibly. “You go to places like Nepal, Tibet or the Himalayas where we have massive problem with global warming,” he says, “it's important to go over there and see firsthand what the issues are, and to come back and try and do something about it.” Whether we’re scaling Mount Everest or diving with sea turtles in the Galapagos Islands, it’s important to tread lightly – and respectfully – on every corner of our planet. And ideally, use the experience to make the world a better place Guests: Jennifer Palmer, Founder, Women for Wildlife James Sano, Vice President for Travel, Tourism and Conservation, World Wildlife Fund Norbu Tenzing, Vice President, American Himalayan Foundation Related Links: World Wildlife Fund Women for Wildlife American Himalayan Foundation Sustainable Travel International This program was recorded live at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on March 19, 2018.

On this week’s episode, Ayana interviews world-renowned photographer James Balog on his newest film, The Human Element, which explores how elements like earth, water, fire, and air are changing due to human impact and interaction. As we recognize dominant culture’s relationship with the planet, we must remind ourselves that over fifty percent of the planet’s land surface has been transformed, approximately nine out of ten people on Earth breathe “high polluted” air, and over forty percent of Americans live in potentially uninhabitable coastal areas. The Human Element seeks to explore this relationship, the power of human activity, and how communities are regionally adjusting and reacting once they discover they are already at the frontlines of climate change. With decades of experience as a “nature photographer,” James candidly speaks of the simultaneous beauty and horror of documenting the Anthropocene, on the complicity of industries like the arts and entertainment in contributing to fossil fuel emissions, and the importance of language and imagery in mobilizing climate momentum. Ayana and James’ conversation reminds us that amongst the staggering statics of planetary change we cannot fall victim to despair, we must acknowledge this as the honesty of our time and learn to move through it. For 40 years, photographer James Balog has broken new conceptual and artistic ground on one of the most important issues of our era: human modification of nature. An avid mountaineer with a graduate degree in geography and geomorphology, James is equally at home on a Himalayan peak or a whitewater river, the African savannah or polar icecaps. To reveal the impact of climate change, James founded the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) in 2007. It is the most wide-ranging, ground-based, photographic study of glaciers ever conducted. The project was featured in the internationally acclaimed documentary Chasing Ice and in the 2009 PBS/NOVA special Extreme Ice. James is the author of eight books. His images have been collected in dozens of public and private art collections—and extensively published in the world’s magazines, particularly National Geographic. His new film, The Human Element, is an innovative and visually stunning look at how humanity interacts with earth, air, fire, and water. Orlowski explains that we could be at the beginning of the sixth mass extinction. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I Think You're Interesting
Is the secret to battling climate change a better promotional strategy?

The ways climate change is altering our planet can be hard to see, since they happen so incrementally, and often far away. That’s what’s made the documentaries Chasing Ice and Chasing Coral (a finalist for Best Documentary Feature at the 2018 Oscars) so valuable. The former tracks shrinking glaciers, while the latter shows the devastating die-offs of coral reefs, all thanks to the planet’s rapidly warming atmosphere. But Richard Vevers, a former advertising expert who's one of the main subjects of Chasing Coral, thinks he might have the answer: a better promotional strategy, one that shows human beings how the world is changing, while still preserving hope that something might be done about it.  Chasing Coral itself is an example of that strategy. Pull it up on Netflix, and you’ll see formerly colorful coral reefs, home to all manner of sea life, bleached pure white. Yet the movie does offer hope that there’s some way out of this, if we change our ways in time. Richard joins Todd to talk about coral reef die-offs, yes, but also a life spent under the waves, and just what keeps drawing him to the depths of the ocean. Learn more about your ad choices. Composer J. Ralph talks about his recent score to Chasing Ice. Chasing Ice is a fascinating look behind James Balog's quest to gain physical proof of climate change. Ralph talks about his approach for documentaries including his work on The Cove and Man On Wire. He describes what he wanted to achieve musically especially here with Chasing Ice and all its amazing cinematography. We touch on Hurricane Sandy, which devastated his hometown in New York and how Sandy was a sobering wakeup call that echoes the message of the film. Ralph is a self taught composer with no training or classical music knowledge and to hear his approach as a musician who works based off feeling was supremely interesting. I have to be honest.  One of the reasons I've done so many(#5 now) of these Sunday morning music mixes is that they are so popular, especially on Mixcloud.  So I'm a sellout, a ratings whore.  I admit it.  But I like to think that each Sunday mix is a good listen in it's own way. I usually stumble upon a song or two that prompts me to start a new mix.  In this case it was the song "Before My Time" which leads off the mix.  It's the song that plays during the credits of the film Chasing Ice.  When I heard it as the credits rolled it knocked my socks off.  That's Scarlett Johansson singing.  She's got a unique voice,  not one to be used for candy coated pop music.  But absolutely perfect for the beautiful restraint of "Before My Time." I hope this mix is another worthy addition to the Sunday morning music series.  Enjoy. T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    J.
